Melograno

My first fragrance from Santa Maria Novella and I am in love. The spices and pomegranate make this fragrance fruity and earthy. For a cologne it lasts a long time on me. I am very happy with my purchase.

For starters the notes here are wrong, they are as follows: Bergamot Bitter Orange Spices Pomegranate Rose Ylang Ylang Oakmoss Labdanum Patchouli Musk Melograno is a very earthy scent with a hint of florals and spice. The fruits, Oakmoss, Labdanum and Patchouli really jump out at first spray which creates a vintage feel. The floral notes don’t really stand out much, aside from a brief appearance of Ylang Ylang on my skin, it settles to a fiery-warm, sweet, spicy and woody fragrance. Definitely only for Autumn and Winter because it would be way too heavy and cloying.

Melograno is a funny old thing. A spicy bitter orange opening which clears the sinuses before floating down through powdery layers to a woodsy aromatic base which I find hard to reconcile with any of the listed notes. (Ever smelled a pomegranate?) It comes at you all at once and hangs around for ages. Don’t get me wrong. I like it a lot. A true curiosity. If you have the opportunity to visit the magical Florence shop whose noses made it, it kinda makes more sense as an archaic quasi-medicinal fantasy.

The evolution on this is stunning. The opening is super fresh and mossy, natural and earthy. As it dries down, it becomes a little too sweet (the pomegranate coming in i suppose) for my liking. But the final stages, and the scent it leaves behind on clothes, it's all the notes combined but with this super soapy and clean twist, I'm actually addicted. Too bad I have to go through everything else before getting to the best part. Still a wonderful perfume (:

At first sniff it smelled like walking into the cold of a dusty old church on a summer day, a little bit of leftover incense mixing in with a damp cellar scent. After I wore it on my skin it just smells like if pani walewska met incense, or as if I bathed in imperial leather.

This is exactly how that one Head and Shoulders shampoo smells.

The Powder Trap 🧽❌ Another target analyzed by noteninja. I look for specific notes, but the big picture here is simple: a massive, overpowering soap bomb. Melograno smells heavily of fabric softener and baby powder, with the powdery notes amplifying heavily in the drydown. It’s nice for a fleeting moment on freshly washed clothes, but its massive projection and endless longevity make it a risky choice for a full-day mission. Do not deploy this in the heat unless you want a soapy executioner on your hands. Strictly for the hardcore soap and powder elite. Which tactical review are we locking in? I recently sampled Grenade by Solinote, and was quite impressed by its bright, and refreshingly realistic pomegranate accord. The name alone had me also thinking about Melograno, ...but no, of course not. The two are not at all similar. However, could something suggestive of this SMN scent be made by layering with Grenade? The most obvious pairing would be with Chanel No. 5. Experiment: On my left arm, I spray SMN's Melograno. On my right, I layer Grenade with Chanel No. 5 (at 1:1, adjacent sprays). (A good choice as it s a woody aldehydic that has been previously compared with Melograno. But they are still not that close, Now it is Grenade + Chanel that smells much more overtly fruity than Melograno, ...and ironically enough, Melograno now does suggest Chanel No. 5, or perhaps something between that and No. 5 L'Eau, or even No. 22. And fair enough, Grenade does not persist/project as strongly as Chanel No. 5 (EDP), so reapplication would be necessary.

Melograno's distinctive opening blend of citrus, spice, and pomegranate accords possesses a captivation that most fragrances can only envy. Furthermore, the scent is also remarkably persistent, enough so to bely its classification as an eau de cologne. Overall, both the profile and performance of this formula make it an exceptional achievement in perfumery, ...and an exceptional choice to wear in any season. No, this doesn't literally smell like Chanel No. 5, but the bright sense of effervescence at the top is suggestive enough to inspire a comparison. If anything, it is Melograno that seems more memorable, perhaps due to it being more unusual. Also, its sparkling tingle certainly lasts longer than the aldehydic opening of 'five'.

Fresh soap. Classic clean scent, can be very elegant. If you are looking for a mediterrain clean scent, this is it.

This smells 100% like Becutan. Those from the Balcans will know.
