Tabacco Toscano

I received a sample a few weeks ago when travelling to their London shop and from my tiny 1ML bottle, the tobacco and vanilla smell creamy enough to eat! So having loved the scent but wanting to save a few pennies, I bought a used bottle on eBay, where the user told me she bought the perfume back in winter 2022 (the bottle is engraved and frosted compared to their more recent bottles that are clear with a sticky label). The 2022 bottle smells WILDLY different to my sample... It packs a heavier punch of musk and it's a lot less sweet than the recent sample I received. The tobacco note is hella smoky now. It almost smells historically otherworldly and vintage / old. I'm not sure which one I prefer because the longevity of the 2022 is also somehow worse than my more tame sample... Neither fragrance, new or old lasted me for more than 3 hours. I am also reading that SMN had a different formulation for Tabacco Toscano again *before* 2022 so I guess all I can recommend is when buying this perfume, be aware SMN tweak their perfumes ALOT! When reading reviews here, it's even more important to check the date of the review because the scent they're raving about might be different to the one you're buying today, despite being under the same name. I've even read Reddit reviews of someone buying the discovery set and enjoying Tabacco Toscano from that, so they bought a full bottle, only for the full bottle to smell different to their discovery set... both discovery set and 100ml bottle were seemingly purchased in the same year... I work in Florence and often take my students to Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, so I've become quite familiar with the house's offerings. Most of the fragrances are "old school" classics, but Tobacco Tuscano is a stunner and its scent profile can definitely compete with contemporary contenders. The opening is fresh tobacco leaf with a touch of smokiness, sweetness, and smooth suede. On skin, the opening is quite fleeting but sprayed on clothes it lasts a bit longer. As Tobacco Tuscano dries down, powdery vanilla steps forward and is what makes this fragrance perfectly unisex. The overall combination is smooth and just a touch sweet—comforting and cozy. This is my favorite tobacco scent of all time and I've smelled many. The downside is definitely the longevity. I don't mind that it doesn't project, but because it's an eau de cologne concentration, it's not meant to be long-lasting. Bummer. I would love to see a stronger concentration option someday. It's full bottle worthy for me and I plan to pick it along with the accompanying body lotion. On a side note, if you plan to visit Florence you MUST visit Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella. It's the oldest known pharmacy in Europe and is celebrating its 800 anniversary. There's a special dried floral display that is quite breathtaking. Display aside, it is a gorgeous building with an opulent interior and a rich history, and because it's a retail space, there's no entry free. The staff are also incredibly kind and knowledgeable, which is very often not the case in other retail establishments in Italy.

A perfect unisex offering from Santa Maria Novella. Tabacco Toscano offers only a few notes, but they’re well-balanced and beautiful. If you can find it, get it. It’s worth the price. I know its tobacco note is modeled after a type of cigar, but I don’t get much of a “traditional” tobacco scent. The vanilla, amber, and malt come together well for a classy, tasteful, pipe tobacco kind of scent that radiates. It’s warm. It’s cozy. What makes Tabacco Toscano unique in my collection is that it’s sweet without being sugary or terribly boozy - an unusual feat for vanilla fragrances in my experience. On me, Tabacco Toscano is an exceptional performer. It only requires two sprays and it stays on my skin until the following day. Apart from Maison Margiela’s By The Fireplace (which isn’t similar), it’s hard to imagine a fragrance more evocative of escaping cold weather and relaxing fireside with cider, glühwein, or coffee. To me, Tabacco Toscano is a cashmere sweater in an artisanal coffee shop or an après-ski chalet in Chamonix. It is worth mentioning though that Tabacco Toscano is not exclusively made for cold weather, I think the amber and malt combination gives off a musky vibe that makes it compatible for the warmer, sweatier months too - particularly at night. If you’re looking for an unusual vanilla scent that is classy, warm, inviting, and intriguing, Tabacco Toscano is a strong offering from a great house.

I have the SMN discovery set of 8 fragrances, and this was a completely unexpected standout for me. My only previous experience with a tobacco fragrance was with Maison Margiela Replica Jazz Club, which was a massive failure on me (two words: wet ashtray!). So I was quite nervous about Tabacco Toscano and sampled it thinking it would be another case of instant dislike. ...and happily, I was so wrong. This is light, spicy, and woody, with a touch of smoke and sweetness. Like the scent left on your clothes after standing around a bonfire, but lighter and a tad sweeter. If you’re like me and generally hesitant about tobacco fragrances, please try this one! I promise you will not smell like a chain smoker or a barbecue grill. It has an intimate sillage, so the scent sticks close to you, and it’s just soooo cozy and evocative of fall to me. Also, I do see a lot of men reviewing this and loving it, but I am a woman and I feel like I can wear this too. It’s truly unisex. It’s in the same general vein as soft, spicy, woodsy, vanillic scents like Diptyque Eau Duelle and MM Replica Whispers in the Library (sadly discontinued), which is what makes it so wearable in my opinion and why it appears to be such a crowd-pleaser. Contemplating a full bottle of this one, and god knows I don’t need any more full bottles right now!

This one has been a grower for me since I first tried the sample vial I purchased. I am now a proud owner of my first bottle. I'm a fan of some vanilla, sweet woody scents and the creaminess expressed by reviewers is what initially attracted me. I was indifferent but intrigued by the scent at first. It comes off as a bit of an aromatic tobacco leaf scent. If you dislike the smell of cigarettes but don't know what actual tobacco leaf smells like, I wouldn't turn away from this one. The tobacco mixes with the bergamot and brings a very creamy, sweet woody smell at the beginning. This initial bit evolves into this very smoky, woody base that accompanies the sweetness of tobacco leaf and the vanilla and begins to journey into a deeper and smokier base. The scent feels slightly gourmand to my nose — I believe this is due to the smokiness that the gaiac, cedar, birch, and sandalwood come together to evoke. I get a strong scent of smoked foods.... very akin to smoked meats or fish if you've ever had them served on a block of wood in addition to being smoked. Its not the smell of the actual meat but rather the taste and smell of that smoked barbecue/grill flavor. If you want this to last longer I recommend applying the body lotion underneath the scent. Each additional wear has me loving it more and more.

I am kind of person who likes very few fragrances. So, most of time when I visit a fragrance shop, I don’t find any suitable ones for me. But last week when I visited this fragrance shop, my nose came across an olfactory experience wherein I was so mesmerized and lost that unknowingly I was standing in the corner of the shop and was just sniffing through many of scents to find the one that has hit me so hard. Searching and searching, finally I had my hands on this Tobacco Toscano Santa Maria. Actually, I am a fan of tobacco and probably that’s why I was attracted to it. I loved the presentation, packaging and bottle too. I immediately made my mind to buy this one. Mind it, till now I didn’t even read the notes. So, once I got home, I quickly unboxed it. Read through the notes stating jasmine and bergamot as opening notes, birch leaf and tobacco as the middle notes while the dry down was all about malt, amber and vanilla. Immediately I wore it and loved it to eternity. The silage is outstanding, longevity was almost 8-10 hours on me. I recommend it completely. Seriously impressive!

I wasn't expecting to like this because I won't go anywhere near a vanilla/gourmand scent, but I got the sample in a discovery kit so I figured it was worth a try. I was happily surprised- beneath the (warm and mellow) vanilla lurks the most beautiful incensey cedar and tobacco! It still definitely has a sweetness to it, but the smoky cedar adds enough edge and keeps it interesting. I imagine this is what the professor in the Narnia books smells like (I mean that in a good way). This reminds me of a sweetened, softened version of La Curie's Incendo, which is my favorite winter fragrance. I've been looking for something to wear in the warmer months and am interested to see how Tobacco Toscana fares in the heat. Update: I was in Florence this summer and got to visit SMN flagship store and this is the one I ended up buying! I've worn it all summer long and I'm in love. Update 2025: my favorite scent, just wish it was a parfum rather than a cologne.

Warm, comfortable fragrance with tobacco and vanilla. People say it has a lot of different notes but for me the biggest impression is smoky tobacco on top of vanilla base. As soon as you wear it you feel some nice tough kick of tobacco but moments later the gentle vanilla scent gets dominant and continues throughout. I love how this vanilla smells warm and sweet just the way I expect it to be. It's more for winter times I'd say. And it works for both men and women because the smoky tobacco on top makes it work for men while the sweet vanilla goes along with women. For the longevity, it's kind of disappointing so you will need to wear body lotion to help this thing last. Overall I'd give 4/5 because I personally LOVE the smell but it doesn't quite last long enough.

This is an example of the power of scent memory for me. When I was about four years old we used to visit my widowed grandmother’s old house in Newark, NJ. There were two floors and an attic, and I would ramble around for hours, going into all the rooms and opening closets, cupboards, drawers and boxes. For some reason, this fragrance pulls me back there, reminding me of the smell of old, yellowing papers, pressed flowers, clean bedspreads, half-filled bottles and hanging clothes, with a beam of sunlight poking through. Yes, there is tobacco, but it’s gentle and vanillic. (Did my grandfather smoke? I never met him, as he died before I was born.) I know I may be getting more than the perfumers intended, but that’s how fragrance works, and I love it.

Something so sophisticated and chic about this perfume. It's unisex but leans masculine in my opinion- which maybe makes me like it more, since it feels like more of a statement to wear as a woman. I love the vanilla note, it's sweet without being overly so. It smells expensive to me. I have the sample, but am thinking of getting the full bottle. Edit: Something within me must have changed...skin chemistry altered perhaps...I put this on recently & had to wash it off. Smelled like old wool & syrup. Maybe something changed with the sample I have, it got too old? Don’t know, but glad I didn’t get the full bottle! Sad, because I really did like this before!!!!!!

Tabacco Toscano to my nose is a bit sharp and dry, a bit woody—think old dusty furniture. The first few minutes give me a bit of a headache, but after the top note dissipates, it mellows down into a bittersweet vanilla, which to me is comforting and somehow nostalgic. I have tried this both in the winter and summer. I reckon this is better in a cooler weather but also not bad in hot weather. This fragrance is not hard to wear and completely unisex. This should not be blind bought as it is a bit unique and the dryness could be a bit off-putting to some. Among the SMN frags, this is my top pick alongside Cinquanta, Fieno, and Cala Rossa.

Stunningly beautiful, easily one of the best tobacco scents I’ve ever worn, and that’s saying a lot since I often don’t do well with tobacco. In fact, the name of this perfume prevented me from wanting to sample it. I’m a vanilla fan, and this tobacco is tempered by a quality vanilla note. It’s so smooth and easy, that it’s easy to forget that tobacco and leather—usually ingredients that go masculine on my skin—are here. But indeed they are, and this is the definition of unisex. I would love to smell this on a man too. So if you’ve been avoiding sampling, don’t delay. It’s on my short buy list.

After the camphorous medicinal/antiseptic blasts that announced the arrival of previous SMN fragrances, Tabacco Toscana enters comparatively mildly, even apologetically. It’s saying “I am a straightforward (but perfectly presented) amber fragrance with tobacco notes and a subtle musky (slightly soapy) dry down, complemented with vanilla. I am well-behaved, subtle and maybe not as strong on sillage or projection as some of my cousins, but for the same reason you will be happy to have me back when you need a calm and reassuring companion in the future.” What a charmer!

tabacco toscano is just so addictive to me, could say it was love at first sniff. so warm, so comforting, so familiar, so rich. realistic tobacco with sweet vanilla, an ambery feel, a hint of leather and lots of woods in the background. my mom described this scent as “opening an old wooden drawer” and i get why she would think that. it’s truly such a sensual fragrance without being loud or asking for attention. it’s simply a magical blend, and as someone commented before me, “it’s sensual without being sexed-up” and i just couldn’t agree more.

This gorgeous scent is powdery and elegant; it smells like old-world tobacco, not anywhere close to a cigarette. Tabacco Toscano is deep and rich with scent. I believe this scent would be great for a winter or fall day/night. This scent is very well-rounded; I believe anyone would like it; therefore, it would be a great gift, unless of course they dislike the smell of tobacco. There are many foreign but welcomed hints that I detect, such as vanilla, the woody oaky scent, and of course, the powder. This is a beautiful scent.

scrumptious. stunning blend of masculine tobacco, cedar and leather in a delicious soft and powdery feminine base of musky, warm spices and vanilla. There's nothing too harsh on the nose here, I feel like all the notes are celebrated in their prettiest light to make a supremely wearable blend. yum yum yum, every cashmere sweater should leave a trace of this scent. My only complaint is that it disappears quickly and doesn't have much sillage on me. Very expensive too for such a short ride. what a shame.

I truly wanted to like this because I once smelled it and had very fond memory of it. But I never pulled the trigger because I thought it was pricey. This time I had some money to spare so I went for a full bottle. And mind you I made sure it was the pre reformulation version. Very light tobacco, followed by something powdery sweet. The whole ordeal lasts for about an hour then it’s all gone. Overpriced imo. Sweet nothing.

Tabacco Toscano doesn't grab me as a rich tobacco scent, rather it has a fairly prominent birch tar/leather note on opening which my skin projects with a rather phenolic dominance. This soon settles softly into a smoky, vanillic scent with a subtle glowing amber. More dry smoke weaving through rather than the richness of moist tobacco. As a leather scent, this is quite nice, smooth, smoky, beautiful.

Tabacco Toscano was quite impressive. A tobacco perfume that most definitely smells like tobacco but isn't overpowering or harsh in any way. This smells like a mellow amber, woody, tobacco that is gently sweetened and easily unisex. I find this perfume to sit somewhat close to the skin--it's no sillage bomb like Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille. But that's what I like about it. Comfortable and familiar.

This is one of the most elegant and unisex tobacco scents I've ever tried! While many tobacco-leaning scents tend to be loud, this one is just enough and so well balanced with the fresh and musky notes. It is warm and cozy, but the guaiac wood, makes it grounding and sophisticated. I could imagine a very well dressed woman wearing this. She's strong, eclectic and is never afraid of saying no.

A dusty blend of leathery woods smothered in a sticky sweet pipe tobacco. Wears surprisingly light, with an undertone of malted vanilla whipped cream and airy top notes, and doesn't have much leafy greenness. The sweetness slowly subsides as it dries down, leaving just woody tobacco as a skin scent. Versatile and well-balanced profile. Moderately soft projection for 2-3hr, longevity 6-8hr.

Smelled this at Castello di Amorosa in Napa and fell totally in love with it. Did not buy because of price but otherwise a very classic smelling cologne. The tobacco here reminds me of DG The One. At first I thought it was a leather dominat scent until I saw the name "tabaco" at the back of the bottle. Does not come with sprayer but I have a bunch of decant bottles so that's not an issue.

Not bad! I am quite impressed by the smell actually. The tobacco in this one is rather soft and well blended with some sweet notes compared to many other tobacco scents I have got. A little bit too dry but very pleasant, especially the dry down which is quite floral (not very feminine though). The only problem is the projection on my skin. Scent: 8.5/10 Longevity: 7.5/10 Projection: 6/10

A lightly sweet, true tobacco scent. It doesn't project heavily, but it's more than just a skin scent. It is so nice to have a tobacco fragrance that's not overpoweringly sweet--the perfumer trusted that the actual note of tobacco would not need to be countermanded. This is so pleasantly evocative and understated--it's really a pleasure, and grew on me the longer I wore it.

when i was little i thought cigars were the same thing as cigarettes, so when i saw one for the first time i was shocked and thought, what a FAT cigarette. well, tabacco toscano is a nice FAT cigar. fuzzy, yummy, a little sweet. for fans of smelling sexy while wearing a brown smoking suit and cravat. I wanna sit in the lap of someone who wears this.

I went to a mens provisions store to buy a specific fragrance and I tried this while I was there. It took all my willpower not to buy this as well. Creamy barbershop type tobacco fragrance. Simply beautiful. Ingredients are high quality which I'm discovering is the case with this brand. Top notch Italian cologne. Scent 10/10 Performance 3.5/10

A fresh, smoky tobacco. Quite well done. I do not detect any vanilla . The Guiacwood is quite noticable. For myself, it's not a bold tobacco at all. It's a light fresh smoky tobacco. Slightly ashy and pleasant to the nose. I consider this a subtle scent. Much like how Bvlgari Man in Black EDP is.

Elegant, understated. Pure class You need to get close to smell this. It is incredibly classy and intimate. I get a solid 8 hours of wear. I routinely spray this on before bed and smell it when I wake up. Definitely an all year wear for me, it works particularly well in the cooler months.

This makes me wish I smoked cigarettes. Finally, a tobacco perfume that isn't overwhelmingly tobacco-and-dark-liquor. This smells like a man (or woman, even) in an ivory cashmere sweater and brown leather oxfords. Christmas in New York. The Lotte Palace Hotel, to be specific.

This is an absolutely beautiful, tobacco smoky and woody scent. Right when I put it on I knew I needed it, something about it smells so nostalgic and makes me think of home, of my dad's flannel jackets after a day out of wood cutting. I NEEDS IT.

Bought it instantly after I sniffed it at the Florence's boutique. Very sweet opening but not overwhelming, the tobacco is not strong as I thought but it blends very well with the other notes. It's intimate and sexy, narcotic I'd say. 9/10

Not bad - very subtle and as the summary at the top of the page suggests sits close to the skin. I ended up selling my bottle and getting Cremo Spice and Black Vanilla instead. Identical in just about every way - just not the price :)

ambery tobacco vanilla ice cream, but not too sugary or food-like obviously. i love this soooo much. it's so comforting/cozy, refined. my favorite santa maria novella, tied with potpourri. the associated body products are great too!

Lovely 🥰 What Creed Tabarome didn’t give me, this masterpiece offers at last 🌈 subtle and elegant, floral touches and creamy texture. Great longevity and intimacy, which makes it a fantastic option for many occasions 👍

It would actually take all my willpower NOT to follow and sexually harass a man wearing this. I know that doesn't sound very good nor very nice but it is what it is. This does something to me.

I loove this. It's the most pure tobacco note I've found. I had imagined the ideal tobacco note for me, and after trying many, this is it. Subtle and not overpowered by vanilla or fruits.

Smells like a little moth spinning some silk while smoking a pipe while also falling asleep on your shoulder. Also like an old parisian man, but in a good way.

Santa Maria Novella Tabacco Toscano is a sweet, spicy, semi-woody, and semi-fresh tobacco scent that’s very accessible and agreeable and not particularly dark. Its main notes are tobacco leaves and vanilla, with a mix of spices that is not specified, as well as jasmine, bergamot, and cedar. The fragrance is by no means groundbreaking but offers a refined take on a sweet tobacco fragrance with a reasonable use of vanilla that is not too spicy or biting. In that respect, it’s not particularly masculine or feminine based on stereotype, but rather comfortably in between, nor is it so strong for one to hesitate applying it in the summer months. It’s easy to enjoy and feels appropriate for various occasions. It’s a nice option, certainly more robust than many of the freshies that comprise the Santa Maria Novella catalogue. Still, it stands out less than many of those options within its class, as I get something similar (albeit without tobacco) in L’Occitane Eau Des Baux for half the price, and there are scores of bolder, more robust sweet tobacco options that are more expensive (Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille, Parfums de Marly Herod, and By Kilian Back to Black, to name a few). Tabacco Toscano is offered in the standard eau de cologne concentration with the similarly standard pricing of $135 for 100ml, in line with most fragrances in the Italian house. It is sold through the house website as well as the boutique Aedes de Venustas in Manhattan, from whom I obtained my sample. I quite like but doubt I’ll pursue it further. Overall, it’s nice, but not outstanding. 7 out of 10

Okay look, I love Tabacco Toscano. I love vanilla tobaccos in general because I'm basic, and TT is the closest thing to a warm weather sweet tobacco that I've found. It's delicious, I love it. But I'm not here to talk about that--I'm here to warn people who also stumbled on TT and think "Wow, that was great, I think I'll order a sample pack of a dozen other SMN fragrances and explore this house." If that's you, hold your horses, because TT is NOT representative of SMN as a whole. In fact, it's starting to look like some bizarre outlier, now that I've tried a dozen more SMNs. I can see long-standing fans of the house trying TT and thinking it's way too sweet and mainstream--all of the other SMNs I've tried have been very old-fashioned, like you would expect from a house this ancient. I don't mean that in a bad way and I actually think it's cool that they're keeping those fragrance aesthetics alive, but my modern nose found most of them very challenging and harsh. So I'm not saying to stay away from everything else in this house; I'm saying to sample judiciously based on notes and reviews rather than taking the shotgun, random, "I'll try whatever if it's as good as Tabacco Toscano" approach that I did. Edit: I have also come to be a massive fan of Acqua di Cuba and Caprifoglio from this house. I actually prefer both to Tabacco Toscano. I stand by what I said about TT being an outlier for SMN, but there are more great fragrances there, you just have to dig around a bit.

Dry woody talcum powder Interesting, two main elements fighting for dominance, a smoky woody dry parchment slightly vegetal tobacco accord, very much evocative but of actual tobacco leaves matched with a thick veil of sweet and fine baby powder. Reminds me very much of a fortified traditional Italian ‘talcato‘ aftershave in terms of the talc like powder but with a very literal tobacco effect resonating through the back, not so much the smoke itself but rather a unlit cigar/humidor scent. Kind of like how Chambre Noir plays a similar olfactory trick with violet and suede leather, this one blends talcum with dry unlit tobacco Since I am not a smoker myself and freely admit to enjoying tobacco more so as a ‘fantasy‘ smoky sweet tonka rather than an emulation of the real thing, while also having little interest in talcum powder, I have a neutral appreciation towards this scent. Considering its EdC concentration it projects surprisingly well, won’t last more than few hours though.

I used to smoke pipe a few years back, so I'm quite picky when it comes to tobacco perfumes. This one gets it. It smells just like the dry tobacco I used from the bag. A slightly vanillic aroma, and dry tobacco leaves. Sweet, but not too sweet. They even got the woods right. The best tobacco perfume I've tried to date. Way ahead of Volutes and Tobacco Vanille in that it smells genuinely like pipe tobacco. I do like Volutes and TV, but Volutes can get too sweet in the drydown (somewhat losing the essence of the tobacco), and I personally think TV is just way too sweet throughout, and I always struggle to find tobacco in that one (I mostly get honey and vanilla). So if you want to know what true pipe tobacco smells like, look no further. Longevity is great as well. Lasts just as long as Melograno (6 hours on my skin, if not more). Sillage seems good too, I do get wafts after applying on my wrist. Very highly recommended.

The scent is beautiful. I cant pass the bottle without giving it a whiff. The combination of tobacco and vanilla are perfectly paired to soothe the senses. However, at $150 a bottle one would expect the scent to last longer than 15 minutes. The first time I wore the scent to work I was super excited to share the experience with my co-workers. I was dismayed that even with heavy dosing, the scent is completely vanquished within the hour. The tobacco vanishes and all complexity is lost. You are left with a vanilla so subtle one must inhale like a horse, nose pressed to skin, to get anything at all. I would not recommend this scent unless money is no concern and you can spray to your hearts desire. The candle version has a stronger tobacco presence. I wish the perfume was more similar to the candle in that aspect.

As the name suggests - tobacco and vanilla - mellow and slightly sweet. Comforting and warm. Nostalgia for the near east - think a Byzantine cathedral bathed in light on a clear day. Doesn't project, but instead protects: like carrying a holy relic of Christendom in your pocket. I come back to this once in a while to enjoy. If you want to amp up the woodiness (it's a bit soft for my personal taste) and get a reaction apply a few drops of Australian sandalwood oil as well. A young lady asked what I was wearing and said "you smell so good, this is gonna sound weird but ,are you a carpenter?" "No" but I was years before, why?" . "Hmm I just smell a beautiful wood smell." This, with a few drops of real sandalwood is probably what the greatest carpenter of all time, Jesus, might have smelled like.
