Gold Spot

I've tried all three of Chris Maurice's ouds created for Sarah Baker. Each is a masterpiece in its own right, but this latest release is probably the most perfect in hardcore perfumery terms; deeply classic but also new and different. It's definitely a gourmand take on oud. There's this rich butterscotch, caramel sweetness and hints of bitter dark chocolate all perfectly balanced with those tart citrus notes that his compositions deploy so perfectly as a balance to the sweetness. It's a bit like visiting a Belgian maître chocolatier's bejewelled shop and being offered a rich dark chocolate, but when you bite into it there's this bittersweet orange vanilla ganache inside and your senses go into overdrive. As it dries down, the deep woody, animalics of the ouds and incense-like myrrh push through and the gourmand aspect gives way to a deeply sensual sense of warmth and indulgence. It really is the perfect olfactory match with its inspiration taken from the glamour of Hollywood's golden era. It shimmers with a stylish glamour of legendary movie stars that merely mortals can only hope to achieve. It's very sexy, but in a sophisticated, classic way with perfect poise. Whether male or female, you'll need to like sweeter fragrances to really enjoy wearing this one, though I don't think you need to be a fully paid up member of the oud fan club to like it: all of the house's ouds do something so different and refreshing that defy obvious expectations about oud. I wouldn't say that it's a perfume that you'd wear on a daily basis... unless you insist upon making an entrance every time you walk into a room. There's something very special and dramatic about it so more one of those fragrances you'd wear for a special occasion or when you wanted to make an impression.

The latest release from Sarah Baker and the third in the oud trilogy - Gold Spot drips with the glamour of the Golden Age of Cinema. The trilogy has been created by Chris Maurice, using three constant materials, natural oud, cypriol and orange blossom. Crucially, the perfumer has used these materials each time with a different set of adjuncts taking each composition in a new, different direction. With Gold Spot, Chris has added notes of sweet myrrh, butterscotch and dark chocolate to two natural oud tinctures, resulting in the most gorgeous chocolatey opening. If Loudo was a Milky Bar, Gold Spot is more of a Terry’s Chocolate Orange. Now imagine a whole stack of them, each one individually wrapped in the fine, glamorous golden wrapping of a Fererro Rocher and piled high on a silver tray at some schmoozy Oscars afterparty, Marlon Brando and Marilyn Monroe sat in the corner trying to surreptitiously conceal the chocolate stains around their mouth that betray their gluttony. I received this as a sample. And I liked it the first time I tried it but on 2nd or 3rd wearing- like most if not all Sarah Baker frags it started to grow on me more and more. Now it's a love. It's a sweet oud and there's chocolate and vanilla but it's totally different from anything I have smelled in this vein. I was planning on wearing histoires de parfums 1969 this evening which dries down similar-ish w the chocolate patchouli and vanilla, similar ish but not at all the same except in the creaminess. Actually i think of 1969 as fluffy and this as creamier. As you would imagine from the notes it has a cozy vibe but also very sexy vibe. Maybe from the musk? I'm not sure but I love the dry down which is soft and sexy and chocolate but not in a super gourmand way. It's creamy but not in a very milk way more like a sandlewood lactonic. It's really lovely and 💯 unisex. I feel like you probably could wear this in warmer weather it's not super heavy. Really nice 10/10 smell but the price is oof. Too high. Maybe I'll snag a bottle from someone whose looking to trade or sell.

Sarah Baker ouds are a story of progression. Symmetry lead to Loudo which lead to Gold Spot. The Laotian oud adds a strong, leathery, earthy sweetness and Gold Spot balances that with dark chocolate, vanilla and butterscotch to make it much more gourmand than it's predecessors. It lasts more than 12 hours on my skin with moderate projection. Gold Spot is a warm dessert oud, very comforting and familiar and a steal at this price point.

Chocolate in the form of a protective, warm, fur coat. The most gourmand I’ve tried and one of the few that I yearn for on days where the world seems like too much. Nursing a hot cocoa out in the fields where the wild horses kick up mud and the storms roll in. For those who have a similar elemental nature and may be obsessed with the iconic 2023 album, Unreal Unearth.

This is gorgeous!! The oud is present but it doesn’t take over. I have an oil from an online Islamic company that smell super similar to this. The oil is called CARAMEL OUD. The oud in the oil fragrance is a lot more medicinal than this. Gold spot is a smooth buttery sweet caramel with a slightly medicinal woody oud running through. ❤️❤️❤️

Gold Spot smells so luxurious. It feels like an intimate evening dinner by the sea. I’d love to use this full time (a male), but I’d also recommend this for any of my girlfriends. The host of the party would wear this, in whatever obviously tasteful attire they would be wearing. It is also quite warm. Like a hug from someone you love.

What an absolutely beautiful fragrance. It’s gourmand without being too sweet. The oud is beautiful, not too overbearing. This is my first real oud fragrance I’ve used and I’ve been thrilled with it. This is something you can wear any season, but the warmer months definitely make the citrus notes more apparent.

i have the oud trilogy and this one is nearly gone! i love symmetry too because it's so unusual but i think gold spot is more wearable and i also like smelling it on my girlfriend, which is why the 30ml is nearly gone. it is sweet and woody and we both noticed that we get a lot of compliments

The best one of the trilogy, and the reason behind my recent oud obsession. I’ve been using it in moderate heat (30°C) and is not as cloying as i thought it would be. I find it easy to use, it’s not a moody type of fragrance, and it draws a fair number of compliments.

It is easily the most realistic/strongest chocolate note I have ever smelled in a fragrance. It is a wonderful mixture of oud and chocolate. I could see this being a great rainy-day fragrance. I love this one. I highly recommend sampling it for yourself.

Very sweet and warm. Could be both summery and wintery at the same time. Maybe even fall, perhaps spring. Definitely getting the butterscotch, super sweet and lovely. Would highly recommend to friends who enjoy soft sweetness like this x

Wear this if you dare to be adored!! It’s the olfactory embodiment of wearing a crown. If pride of the 7 deadly sins could have an official perfume, this would be it. (Also to me it smells exactly like The Emperor by Livia Rus.)

Almost identical to Symphonium. It’s like Loudo and Symphonium blended. I know Sarah is a big fan of that fragrance so it was probably in the back of her mind when creating this fragrance. It’s bloody lovely tho.

Really pleasant oud smell, in my opinion it’s almost identical to symphonium by xerjoff

Wore this on my other wrist whilst testing Loudo (review for that is done) Both open very similarly for a brief few moments (cuddly furry Animalic), but Gold Spot diverges very quickly down a cocoa-powder dusted fudge path. There are also hints of orange blossom adding a bit of floral sparkle, something I felt was a lovely addition. This opening phase feels like it should be sweeter, but fear not! What follows within an hour or so of spritzing is a languid shift into a more vanillic amber heart threaded with balsamic sweetness and warmth. During this time I am noticing, admittedly nose-to-skin, a very subtle almost sour note. Can't quite figure this one out but it's definitely there. Just an observation. Overall Gold Spot has the tiniest lean feminine, but I'm only really saying this because when compared side by side, Loudo seems to lean slightly Masculine. The heart to base reminds me of a Middle Eastern style of perfumery I've come across many times (24 Gold by Scentstory is one example) and even Oud Save The King by Atkinsons, yet the quality here puts it above both of these, especially that sumptuous opening! My personal preference goes to Loudo, but by golly Gold Spot comes a close second and I'd have no qualms (if I had deeper pockets) owning both!

Gold-foil dessert oud. One word: sumptuous. This smells like sinking into a leather sectional, wearing nothing but black velvet and jewels. Something animalic growls in the beginning, but it’s quickly extinguished by a dark amber. The chocolate is perfectly bittersweet and the butterscotch is so malty and lush. I’ve never come across a fragrance this caramelly. The scent of it almost seems to warm the air. My favourite oud to date, which is usually a challenging note for me. Lingers for at least a fully day in fabric, but with demure sillage. Mental Snapshot: What a Bond Girl would wear to the Bellagio. Plush carpet, gilded chandeliers. She nurses a White Russian as she wins hand after hand in the private rooms. She smells good enough to eat, like a poisoned truffle. tl;dr: sumptuous 🎰🍮

This is a white cashmere sweater and kittens in a fragrance. Rough tarry cypriol and agarwood with soft vanilla and butterscotch. Very deluxe. What Atelier des Ors Lune Feline is trying to be but Gold Spot does a much better job with. Very nice balance with all the different elements in the fragrance. Sexy and interesting, and quite addictive.

I'm going to need these idiots on fragrantica to stop comparing fragrances that they have probably not even smelled to ridiculous and child-like name calling. Grow the f*"' up!

It is decent, but I got a tiny bit disappointed. It definetely smells of chocolate, but kinda animalic in the back, more than I expected it to be.

I think this is just ok...I feel like the release of this was a little hyped, but it's not that special? There are yummier chocolate fragrances out there. I'm not sure I love the combination of oud and chocolate, it stops me from being intoxicated with this. It's very woody. Maybe if the oud is want you want so that your chocolate fragrance is not too gourmand? But I still feel there are better chocolate fragrances out there that are also not gourmand. The combination just doesn't wow me. A point in its favor is that it lasts a long time, projecting strongly for at least the first five hours.

Very complex with chocolate, petit grain, and agar wood. While not my preferred scent profile, it is memorable.

My partner and I got the Sarah Barker discovery kit and overall we were disappointed. we tested all on strips at first and then skin our final thoughts are: Gold Spot, Loudo and Symmetry are all half siblings but with the same last name (Dad, specifically.) Not only are they all made by the same Perfumer (Chris Maurice) but they ALSO ALL CONTAIN Bergamot, Petitgrain, Orange blossom, Amber, Cypriol, Musk and Laos Oud. Symmetry and Loudo both contain Neroli. Loudo and Gold Spot both contain Vanilla. Loudo contains White Chocolate while Gold spot contains Dark Chocolate, Butterscotch and Sweet Myrrh. If I had to pick one of the three, It would be Gold Spot, I can only just smell the Dark Chocolate and the myrhh is lovely, but again all 3 are almost identical, Gold Spot is the Golden Child. Loudo is second and Symmetry is last... overall I just don't think this trilogy is for me... If they weren't in the discovery set I wouldn't of picked them... Different strokes for different folks.

Well, this is a first! The oud accord in this perfume turns into chlorine accord a few minutes in. A shame as it smelled promising at first. Not giving it a 1/5 because at least it was funny.

Fecal chocolate like American "chocolate" I guess. Gross. Anyway, lasts an hour maximum. First time I sprayed, I was intrigued and liked its opening. Tried again. Do not like.

One of those kind of funky stinky ouds. Not really doing it for me especially with the butterscotch. This smells ripe.

#1677 in my “Tour de Fragrance” Got this decant from scentsplit.com, my second Sara Baker scent. I enjoyed “Symmetry.” Agarwood, myrrh and cypriol usually get a positive reaction from me, so I ordered this even though I’m not a fan of chocolate scents generally. This scent is way more gourmand than “Symmetry.” Gourmand seems a very haughty way to refer to something that smells like one of the cheap chocolate protein bars I consume after a workout. Reminiscent of a “Skor” bar and has me considering ordering the eighteen bar box and eating myself into a diabetic coma. This scent has unimpressive longevity on the skin and not much silage. It isn’t going to offend anyone, but anyone in the office catching a whiff of this will probably head straight for the vending machines for a “Snickers." I always assume these sorts of sweet scents are more for women than men. In any case, it's not for me. Good Luck and Good Hunting!

I really enjoyed my sample. Its moreish. It is a bit sweet and a touch chocolatey but the overall impression is a modern, elegant, sophisticated gourmand. It doesn't smell old school. I can see a guy who loves sweet scents wearing this and feeling quite comfortable about it. Perfect for any age group. The cypriol is evident but the oud is barely discernable. It's not heavy in anyway but it's no lightweight either. It does conjure up in my minds eye soft satin shimmering tones. Not bad longevity or sillage either.

Just got a sample of this. It starts with the same harsh, animal oud that loudo does but settles a lot quicker (within seconds). It does have the same sweet gourmand vibe that loudo has but sweeter. I think the butterscotch is most prominent, with orangey caramel at the forefront. It's pretty sweet, but the oud grounds it gives it an adult, glamorous edge. It stays reasonably close, lasts a good amount of time, about 6-7 hours. I think this is easier to wear than loudo.

It is a velvety oud perfume without intricacy, I recognize the earthy chocolate flavor of patchouli, it is not a bad composition, but to be honest, Middle Eastern houses make oud compositions with charisma, interesting chocolate accords and delicacy if you will. for much less.

What the hell? This literally smells like a horse stable. One of the worst fragances I've tried...

Is it myrhh that smells like root beer? This is nice but also not for me. Maybe i dont like oud?

Poop lovers (in a good way) in fragrance form, rejoice: this is da bomb! Love it.
