Simmer Dim

iadybug below must have some special olfactory receptors, because simmer dim is neither briney nor sour! it’s a soft, subtle scent that grows as you wear it. it’s unlike any other fragrance i’ve worn, yet it evokes a deep sense of nostalgia. my uncle used to keep bees, maybe this is where the familiarity stems from? soft, earthy beeswax is the star of the show here, and i absolutely love it. the ozonic notes stand out for me, offering a breezy feel, like you’re at the end of a hike looking over a loch. the floral notes are muted and very natural, more green than sweet. a true masterpiece in my opinion, at a very reasonable price.

For starters, I want to express how funny it is that all three people who reviewed this fragrance had completely different experiences with it (me included). So, evidently, not a safe blind buy. With that, I wish I could describe how it smells. I definitely know there is some spice involved, but it's hard to say which one exactly. The note of milk is surprisingly very distinctive: warm, and damp, and almost bodily, so evidently lactonic in makes me salivate. It's also pretty salty! Despite the amounts of musk mentioned, there is only a smallest pinch of it in the smell, and it very well adds to the milkiness. The ozone is prickly and sharp, almost having chlorine-like quality. The green-ish flowers take the background, and the dry wood switches between in-your-face and very far away. I can dissect it note by note, but it's hard for me to imagine the picture it tries to evoke. On the Scent Trunk website, the description speaks of "botanical brightness" and "fresh sea air", but to me, the closest image this scent comes to is a warm empty glass with the pool of milk in the bottom, or a wax chopstick. Because of this non-descriptiveness, the perfume is hard to recommend to anyone specifically; hard to imagine who might want this or be searching for it. And yet, - warm, spicy and non-sweet, with a strong creamy undertone, - judging from the reviews, it definitely has found its audience.
