Bread in Chestnut

#1703 in my “Tour de Fragrance” Got this as a decant from Scentsplit. I would say this is similar to Scents of Wood “Praline in Maple” but without the sweetness, so much more likable for me. Kinda surprised no one is bringing up Armani “Stronger with You” in comparison to this scent. The SWY line and all its flankers and imitators say a lot about the popularity of chestnut as a fragrance note. I have every SWY, most of the imitators and a few fellow travelers like Givenchy “Gentleman Reserve Privee” and Maison Margiela “Replica By the Fireplace.” This scent is pretty much equivalent in potency to the SWY EDPs in performance. Where this wins out over the other scents is that olibanum note (the rosemary also helps). A hint of frankincense (not as strong as I would like) sets this apart from the very large crowd of scents that do everything else this scent is doing. If you tossed in some leather and whiskey this would be a grand slam for me and worth the price tag. But, while I think this is a great, versatile scent worth wearing, $240 will buy a lot of fragrance these days, so I’ll set buying a bottle of this aside for now. Good Luck and Good Hunting!

Scents of Wood Bread in Chestnut is aptly named, a moderately-spiced bready, nutty blend, rounded out by tonka, olibanum, rosemary, sandalwood, and patchouli, a heterogenous woody, resinous, spicy mix that doesn’t lean too sweet, even slightly savory, with the rosemary oil and patchouli, albeit not fully a gourmand, particularly given the resinous aspects. It does not have a single aspect that’s as recognizable as say, the maple sugary in Praline in Maple, but it keeps in proportion an artful balance of distinct accords. Overall, I find it quite lovely and enjoy it as something gourmand-suggestive while not being too heavy, sweet, or spicy, but rather quite elegant. Like most of the line, Bread in Chestnut is priced at $240/38 for 75/10ml, sold via the house website and great boutiques like Perfumology, where I bought my 10ml bottles, a great option to try (or have travel sizes for) a greater number of scents at once. 8 out of 10

If you like Mineral Cedar by this same brand, you'll like this. It's a soft, woody-spicy scent, quite comforting and mild. This one is a little bit spicier and sweeter than Mineral Cedar– leaning toward gingerbread. I'll be honest, I don't smell any wheat or chestnut, though, and I wish I did. They're what piqued my interest in this in the first place. Edit: Okay, maybe it's the colder weather, maybe it's suggestion, but trying this again a few months later and I am starting to get the chestnut note. It's a very mild, soft one, more mont blanc than the almost burnt caramelized smell you'd get from a roasted chestnut street cart. I think I'm upping this from a like to a love. It really is like Mineral Cedar's gourmand little sibling, without the powderiness. I think it would be amazing layered with something smokey and leathery, too, to really get that fresh from the street cart effect.

Wow, just wow... I had never tried a gourmand that wasn't overtly sweet, and maybe that's why I'm finding Bread in Chestnut so special. I get a super realistic roasted chestnut: gunbam if it was made in a home kitchen an hour after bread had been baked (crackly crust cooling and yeasty bubbles sighing), instead of on the street where it's usually prepared and sold. I usually find irl gunbam flavor underwhelming compared to its aroma, so this is such a treat for me. There are some spices and woodiness in the background but I can't really pick them out, except maybe the tonka bean. My husband smells a smoky element but I don't get that, only rich, smooth, bready, dreamy, chestnutty goodness. It's fairly linear and I can smell it on myself for hours. This fragrance makes me feel contemplative and cozy, very zen, perfect for cloudy days.

Wow, totally unexpected. I didnt know what I was getting into with this one, it smelled so much different than I thought it would, but it smells GREAT! I am a woman who generally goes for sweeter vanillas, or florals, but this.. I dont know what it is, it feels cozy, comforting, warm. My boyfriend said it smells like church (he meant it in a good way!), I can see why he would think that, it definitely has a hint of incense, maybe from the rosemary? Otherwise I get some spice and warm sweetness. Im not sure I'd call this gourmand tho. Anyways, I think its a true unisex scent. I dont think it pulls masculine OR feminine, it sits perfectly in the middle.

to me its an immediately likable soft and warming scent. I get the bread more as a feeling of coziness than as a note. on different days of testing I've gotten an opening of a gasoline like cardamom and at other times just a spiciness. the gassiness doesn't last long when its present. theres a spicy sandalwoody creamy feel. The chestnut and rosemary are definitely present and they take this is an interesting direction. I would wear this but I think it leans masculine. Its not a gourmand. its more of a warm woody scent. very nice.

how gorgeous! you start off with the rosemary/cardamom and a tiny bit of sweetness, giving it a very slight savoury initial waft, and it transforms into a gorgeous nutty, wheat-y, tonka bean-y bread aroma. obviously gourmand, but not deathly sweet, with enough savoury elements to balance everything. like a renowned brioche bakery that makes almond croissants too. truly beautiful. it ends with a sandalwood dry down. it's very good and worth hunting down, just wish it lasted longer/projected more!

Woody, bready goodness...I love "bready" perfumes, but don't want to smell like a pastry...this is a perfect blend of bread and wood and does not skew towards gourmand...Scents of Wood is a great house and they offer a monthly subscription program that is a steal - $35 a month for a 15ML perfume and small candle...great way to try them all and give them some support...

Yeasty, nutty, woody. Chestnut bread pulled out of a wood-fired oven 30 minutes ago. Lingering warmth, browning crust, subtle balsamic sweetness. Has a sort of effervescent fizzy cola veneer, like a sticky syrup gently brushed across this freshly baked loaf. Moderately soft projection for 2-3hr, longevity 6-8hr.

Pretty, soft & comforting scent. I am not really getting "Bread", but maybe b/c I have Jeu de Peau for that & it's def BREAD. This would be awesome for bedtime. So cozy!

Sexy, woody frag. Beyond WOW for me. Plum in Cognac is on a level of its own, but this one is almost up there. Did not expect to like this based on the name. Try it

This is beautiful. It’s remarkably delicate for the listed notes- it’s well-blended and soft. I haven’t been so excited about a fragrance in quite a while!

This smells like the dry ingredients of a cinnamon roll

I think BloomingSomewhere wrote a very good review below which summarises this scent very well. I am surprised people call it masculine leaning, I can't imagine (and never encountered) men around me smelling like this. To my nose it's a very feminine smell of a freshly made bread at a lovely cosy bakery. Sometimes I wish I wasn't curious about checking the actual notes because my first impression is always slightly different than after I learn more about the perfume. I started noticing tonka bean more after I looked at the notes here and now this delicious smell seems a little less mysterious. Still, very spot on and mouthwatering smell of a freshly made bread and roasted chestnuts. I disagree with people comparing this to By The Fireplace, this is not smokey and has a totally different vibe. Yeah, there's vanilla too but that's not the main accord and I wouldn't put Bread in Chestnut on the same shelf as my vanilla fragrances. I am just testing this right now but I am already in-between "like" and "love". The price, I agree, could be way lower. This is great but it's not 300 dollars great.

At first application this is really Tonka overload. I don’t care for the note in general, so not the kind of opening that would attract me, but luckily the rosemary comes along to add some interest. This is probably reminds what other reviewers of men’s aftershave but for me it’s a godsend and I don’t think makes it unwearable for women or even particularly masculine. (It may recall something like Dior Homme, but that fragrance is a joke about gender to begin with.) It actually served as the only real gourmand element in the fragrance, a savory presence that even suggests salt. Vibe stays pretty much the same on the drydown, with sandalwood taking the fore over the Tonka. This is a pleasant, wearable, even somewhat interesting scent that’s not too daring. For me it would be more effective if vanilla were used instead of Tonka and if the chestnut and wheat notes were stronger.

I totally enjoy every Scents of Wood offering I've tried, but of course, some are far more exceptional than others. Bread in Chestnut falls into the "like, but not love" category for me - it's a woody-spicy blend that's not too gourmand or sweet for those of you who enjoy warm scents, but not edible scents. The cardamom, sandalwood, and chestnut are the stars here to my nose, and honestly, I really don't detect much bready-ness here. Throughout the wear of the fragrance, it tends to lean a little masculine or "cologney" on me which I don't love, but the dry down is exceptional. Soft sandalwood and rosemary ending - very comforting and cocooning. My favorite of this brand remains Praline in Maple - I think that is truly one of my favorite scents of all time. For those smoky gourmand lovers out there, give it a try. Bread in Chestnut gets a solid 7.5/10 from me.

This is a nice scent—it's a safe, sandalwood & unisex iteration of warm/smoky/spicy. I wish it were faithful to its name as I don't get any wheat or bready notes, maybe it's just me. It reminds me of the type of smokiness in L'artisan Parfumeur's Tea for Two (which is discontinued), although without tea notes nor quite as cozy. Nonetheless, this could be a good replacement for that one. I agree that Praline in Maple may be better suited for those looking for a gourmand and more feminine approach to the warm/spicy/smoky axis; it's my favorite of their offerings!

I’ve been so curious about the Scents of Wood brand, and yesterday I had the opportunity to wear Bread in Chestnut. Here’s my initial impression. An easy to wear gourmand, smooth but also with soft projection and light performance. What is standing out for me: Bread in Chestnut is a sandalwood tonka you could wear in the warmer months. I like it but a little pricey for what it is. I do like that this is available in smaller sizes.

I don’t think this scent profile is super original. The smokey chestnut with a touch of sweetness from the tonka is in the same category as By the Fireplace, ELDO Frustration, Tobacco Vanille, etc. I like those scents, I like this fragrance, but not a love. Love the concept of this brand, very innovative but this fragrance is not worth the price tag in my opinion.

Resinous, balsamic and yeasty. I get a little playdough and spicy vanilla too? Smells like when I'd pinch a piece of raw dough from the loaf my mother left rising on the counter and I'd savor the almost alcoholic breadiness. Its sexy but not in your face or overpowering. Bread in Chestnut is really nice but doesn't move me to buy a full size.
