Hinoki in Hinoki

I really enjoy Hinoki but I find it’s the first note to vanish from other fragrances. Hinoki in Hinoki then, is relatively impressive, offering a solid five hours of relaxing meditative Hinoki. It opens like some sort of gourmet vapo rub, very green and fresh but tempered by aromatic herbs and a standout pepper note that seems to sparkle. The final dry down is very subtle and clean, being mostly peppery cedar. Like a reviewer below I found performance lacking at first but it seemed to improve with repeated wearing. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the alcohol has been infused with Hinoki wood chips. This is a subtle personal scent, a good choice for dining out at a nice restaurant or just reaaxing in the evening, or quiet meditative moods. 1 year Update: A year on the shelf has strengthened performance nicely so maybe I'll be wearing this more often. It's more peppery and woody.

A true unisex scent. Bright and airy, lively for being so woody. Crisp and astringent (in a good way). I love it, very versatile and appropriate for almost any environment, from work, to dating, to a funeral... Mature, studious and intelligent. Sillage is moderate, which I like. I don't want to assault the room with my fragrance, but I want to smell nice for 6-8 hours... Bought a 10ml immediately after trying the 1ml decant, and came back a month later to invest in the full bottle. This one will be a frequent wear for me going forward. I typically wear oud/leather/tobacco/amber scents, and this is a nice broadening of horizons for me. Feels attractive, more zippy and energetic than what I typically wear (TF Tuscan Leather is a standby for me).

This has honestly been one of my favorite date night fragrances. A lot of people would prefer their fragrances to project more than this does, but I think it actually does this scent favors. It seems to draw people in, and the couple times I've worn it, it draws one or two compliments. The subtle yet crisp woody notes makes me feel like I'm walking through a forest at night, after it rained in the day. It's really pleasant, and very nice to smell off my skin. Whether it is worth the price is to be debated. I paid full retail for a bottle of this, and while I knew I liked it from a tester I had, it is certainly not for everyone. That being said, it is a genuine treasure amongst other woody scents, and one of my personal favorites!

Hartsy3 is spot on. It takes you in a journey, and it's an amazing one. This is one of the most unique and well done fragrances I have tried. The quality is very apperent, and it's one of the very few fragrances I have purchased retail new without a second thought. As some that doesn't like overly sweet fragrances, this is going to be in heavy rotation for many falls and winters to come. Scent wise, it's the most realistic woodsy scent I've experienced. It's slightly fresh (from the clove?) but has a very dark pine with very light incense in the background. I don't usually like incense, but this is perfect. It also lasts a very long time. 10/10

Great soft fragrance. Light or little projection. Perfect for the office. A Hinoki is a Japanese Cedar reminds me here in the Sierra Nevadas of the Incense Cedar. Related family. Looks like Texas Cedar was used in the mix here according to the notes above. All are probably related in geologic time. This fragrance hums in the background such as like White Fire of Terenzi House. Perfect for close office situations. Love this. A subtle cut but not problematic or unobtrusive. Keeps company throughout the day. Protective as well. Well done, I love it. Soft/ perfect office unisex. A soft, refined projection.

This is a gorgeous expression of Hinoki -- very green and fresh, yet deep and woodsy. However, is it just me, or does it disappear into the skin? I feel like I get about on hour tops and then I can't detect it at all, which is very unlike Scents of Wood fragrances. Maybe I'm going anomsic quickly for some reason. Would love to hear from others. Update: OK, now some weeks on and with the weather colder, I'm happy to report the longevity is actually quite good and I can smell it for hours. Odd how that works... Really liking this one!

This smells so amazingly good. It smells like the dry down of Fille en Aiguilles by Serge Lutens - only fresher! LeLabo makes a hand soap called Hinoki that also smells like this. I love that soap. Its a perfectly balanced green pine scent. Unfortunately it has dreadful performance. 1-2hrs of longevity with low projection. And its super overpriced at $240US for 100mls(given the terrible performance). That said, as a pine wood lover - I'll be looking for a bottle.

This takes me on a journey to a cypress sawmill or a cypress bog. Not sure which, maybe both. The cypress is heavy throughout this scent with cedar in the background but it is very calm and relaxing to me. I don’t like wearing fragrances to bed but this one I could wear while sleeping. Note: a lot of people saying it smells like pine. I’m not really getting that. I think maybe people don’t know the differences between softwood trees.

Retouch from prior review. This fragrance get stronger with time and air. Just like wine must be the oxygen. Revisited and this fragrance now projects really nicely. Also seems to got greener in the bottle. So bottom line love it! Was comparing a spa tea bag of true Hinoki and the fragrance and same DNA. Glad I investigated.

It's the best pure wood scent there is, perfect for the fall. I had a scent bird bottle and that was amazing but when I got the full one it wasn't as good, but still great. Maybe different batch or ingredients because it wasn't green. But it's my fav out of the entire Scents of wood line.

Well made Hinoki that dries down and projects after initial spray. Really nice not to sweet Hinoki or cedar. Like it extremely well. Office friend that won’t disrupt others.

Top note is a pure hinoki scent with a hint of kerosene, the base note is more cedar.Not bad, I actually quite like it.

Epitome of class. You'll smell as if you were carved from cedar.

Ah I see why I like it! On my skin it smells like the favorite part of I believe is becoming my favorite scent to date, which is Vilhelm Parfumerie's Body Paint. Just that tailend. That herbal kind of woody finish, but without Body Paint's chili & pear. I already have that one so as much as I enjoyed sampling this, it'd be redundant for me to get a full bottle of it. To expound on that woody-herbal thing just so it ain't a comparative review lol, it's very brisk & invigorating for a woody experience. Its herbal-ness is a very cold kind of peppery spice that borders into pencil shavings territory, and reminds me a biiiiit of sharpening 4B pencils. It smells more uhh 'material' than the classic yellow pencils. Its herbal/aromatic aspect still lingers right at the top throughout the wear, and overtime steps aside for the brisk woods to reveal themselves to you. It didn't take long for it to get there, but you'll smell it when it takes that turn

Fresh cedar of old-growth forests. Shinto shrines. Incense. Ethereal. Such a lovely hinoki fragrance. it truly smells like the forests of Japan and the old wooden houses and shrines you encounter in the countryside. It's so lovely and fresh. It is a bit deceiving though; unisex on that opening but it does lean a bit masculine on the dry-down. I wouldn't wear it, but I would love to smell this on a masculine person.

#1739 in my “Tour de Fragrance” Given the note combination I expected to love this, but basically it’s a toned down version of an Aesop scent “Hwyl” that I already own. All the same notes are there, just way less potency, and the Aesop is $100 less, so get that, not this. But get it from a reputable vendor like Jomashop, not from some eBay seller. Chinese counterfeits of Aesop are all over eBay.

This is one of those smells that will instantly take you on a journey. It smells like freshly cut pine trees with added spiciness of clove and incense. I will say, this one feels very masculine to me. But in a good way. Very attractively masculine and strong. Like going on a crisp hike with a very strong person to keep you safe.

Hinoki is a faint supporting actor here. The star is a gentle thyme and soft resin. Not as masculine as expected, leans unisex and I'd wear it.

Had my eye on this one for a while and was excited to finally find a tester, but it was ultimately a disappointment. The performance on my skin was pretty terrible. Scent strength is extremely weak, very poor projection, and it's fairly linear. One would really have to overspray to get anything out of it, and I don't think it's worth it given the high price. Opens up with an herbal, camphorous, woody vibe courtesy of the thyme and hinoki. I don't really get pencil shavings, more like wood polish to me. It then abruptly disappeared with barely a trace within 30 minutes. This smells quite pleasant, but it's a shame the scent barely lasts.

I can relate to Tessture’s sentiments around Scents of Wood performance- I honestly think they just need to sit on the shelf for a while OR your nose needs time to learn the blend because poor performers like neroli in acacia & cypress in oak have really bolstered in their period of sitting on my shelf. Hoping the same spell is upon this “Hinoki in Hinoki”. It’s not like cypress in oak to my nose- noticeably more musty but I do agree that dirty hinoki is top tier hinoki and would add that snif sweet ash covers the balsam fir corner of the wardrobe for me.

The opening is beautiful. Every time I revisit this scent I think, maybe I've changed my mind about it. But the opening is fleeting and then it settles down to it's true self. Which is a beautiful frankincense with a subtle touch of cashmeran. It's beautiful but too masculine for me.

Perfect for someone who wants wood and nothing but wood. To me this smells like a pine tree, done in a smooth way. I enjoy it, but it’s not my style personally.

The cedar drown out everything else. It is not a bad scent but they nuance is missing.

Wood polish scent is very dominant in here. Not in an off-putting way. Actually start is very promising and very interesting, almost savoury. I get the comparisons with Vilhelm but would never put them in the same league. Longevity is iffy. Does feel a bit unfinished in the dry down, something is missing in it to make it worth remembering.

Great smell, disappears in under 30 minutes. No projection, skin scent for up to 30 min then disappears.

Review 12 "Onsen Shrine" Sampled. Immediate Japanese forest vibe with a dark moss. As if it just down poured with rain but suddenly stopped. Clove smokiness marries with moss and cedar. Last for a long time about 8 hours and it was strong smelling the entire time. Smokiness is very clean smelling, it's like a mild fire burning that you can't see. I wish my hardwood floor cleaning products smelled this great. Loved it so much, I got a bottle of it. Original score was a 9.2. Update: My bottle disappoints gone in an hour. New rating 1.6. Initially, I was laughing and dismissing all the reviews of people complaining how it does not last at all as I had the sample on. The bottle proved them all right. What on earth happened to this?? One hour and it's completely gone. Another case of reformulated bottles? This performs like generic body spray now, very disappointing buy since the sample was out of this world. Will let it sit and will edit if it improves over time. 1.6 Update 3: I've let it sit for a month, it's growing much stronger each time I spray it now. As a disclaimer, I love dry smoky woody scents. So, this is up my alley. The longevity is... weird. Because it starts with a big blast of smoky hinoki. But then it quickly settles into a more subdued cypress/cedar drydown. So I see why some folks don't think it lasts. It does, but it's not beast mode. I think this fragrance is really successful in that it balances cool and warm tones, providing for a well-rounded experience overall. Just a touch resinous, a touch aromatic, a touch spicy, a touch smoky, and probably more than a touch evergreen, but no PineSol to be found here! Edited to add: One of the spices I get is cumin. Though it’s not listed, it’s either there or some of the other spices together give that cleanly animalic spicy thing.

Another one of the very faint ones form this company. I can smell cypress pine very faintly and a hint of scream but it’s mostly a faint pine. Most of these notes are lost. I like it, but it’s so much like other Scents of Wood that it might as well be the same thing all over again. Very like Cypress in Oak. Eh. I like it, but I don’t love it and wonder if I wasted my money. Too bad. Dirty Hinoki is still the best hinoki to date.

A straight up masterpiece! If you’re a wood lover this is where it’s at! By far the best of this house in my opinion if your taste is one that doesn’t require sweetness to your scents. If you like Hwyl or Hinoki by CDG you’ll like this. It’s also different enough from those scents to be an addition to your collection. Update: I had to sell this. It’s so beautiful , but it literally is gone in 15 minutes.

Beautiful Hinoki fragrance, so well balanced. This is less smoky and deep than D’Annam’s Hinoki Meditation, and less citrusy/aromatic than Heretic’s Dirty Hinoki. It finds a middle ground between the two where the wood is really the focus, softened and gently sweetened by herbal green thyme and cypress.

Finally available at an Australian retailer. Can't wait to get my sample of this and a couple more from the house. I'll update later.

It's giving Zen and MUJI and a little bit of Aesop. Lighter than the other ones, non-offensive.
