Baque

After trying the latest iteration, I can finally put BAQUE from Sulmberhouse in my top favorite tobacco-based compositions. I have long abandoned the Slumberhouse train for many reasons. Mostly because I felt the house had lost its magic and the charisma that got me hooked many years ago. I only kept one perfume, KISTE, my favorite from the house. BAQUE, to me, always felt like a diamond in the rough. A tobacco perfume of great potential which was never fulfilled. The opening part and the heart were brilliant, only to fall apart in the base with a generic vanilla and ambergris combination, a major departure from the theme and the initial boozy-moist tobacco affair. It felt like Josh decided to create an amazing and unique tobacco-based perfume but got lazy in the process and left it unfinished. But now, justice has been done. A fellow enthusiast contacted me, asking if I was interested in acquiring a bottle of this new version of BAQUE. I have to admit, I was intrigued when I heard that a new version came up. Could it be? Final redemption? I decided to try for myself. After receiving it, I first applied it to the blotter. It reminded me of the older version immediately. So far so good, as I always loved the first half of this perfume. The same brilliant opening blast where dried fruits, whiskey, and moist tobacco leaves dance together to your sense's delight. Unique and captivating. I think the use of davana in this perfume is really smart as it coaxes all of that dried fruit, booziness, and edges of the tobacco accord, cementing them together. Such an amazing ingredient when properly used. In the mid, it still went as I remembered it, with the drunken fruits slowly backing down to allow more of the moist tobacco to come forth. Finally, it had reached the point where the previous version turned for the worst. But now, surprisingly, it continued in the direction it should have from the beginning. Yes, the vanilla and the ambergris are still there, yet I feel the ambergris is toned down, and what dominates now in the dry down for me is an amped-up woody quality as well as a prolonged leafiness and the tobacco accord that has been stretched to last forever until the perfume consumes completely on the skin. No more cracks in the flow of the composition, and finally, it feels like a finished product. The leafiness and the woodiness now overtake the vanilla-ambergris combo that follows just as a supporting player. I decided to wear it on the skin, hoping for the same experience as on the paper strip, yet still bracing for that uneventful dry-down I knew well and had me scrub it off mid-way. Only that this time, it never came. Pure delight from start to finish. I wore it over and over again with the same result. I am happy that BAQUE got redeemed at last, and I will be keeping this bottle even though I was skeptical at first. I can finally say that BAQUE is one of my favorite tobacco-based perfumes and most certainly one of the most unique. Moist tobacco leaves from start to finish, adorned with dried fruits drunken on whisky, and supported by vanilla, woods, and patchouli in the base. There is nothing quite like it out there. The real deal when it comes to boozy tobacco perfumes, heavy duty, brooding, damp stuff. To me the opening blast is an extremely harsh (but amazing) photorealistic whiskey note that calms down relatively quick but definitely remains prominent. Beneath the opening blast is an infinitely dense and sultry damp tobacco note, possibly the most realistic I've ever smelled which is placed directly in the centre of an old school cedar base. The vanilla in here definitely comes in the form of (again very realistic) waxy vanilla pods, slightly sweet but verging closer to a bitter vanilla. While I can detect a sweetness which I assume is the apricot, it is closer to a chocolate smell for me, however when I focus on the chocolate smell it quickly turns to green herbaceous smell that makes it inedible! I am a bit disappointed that I can't detect the apricot in here as it excited me amongst the other notes but admittedly I have little to zero experience with apricot notes :( The amber in here reminds me of the ACDD backbone, the only difference here is its less of a detectable note and more of an effect running through the fragrance resulting in an extreme sweet/salty balance that is very addictive and fascinating. While ACDD is very dry due to its use of amber use Baque definitely maintains a damp/rainy quality. I cannot stop smelling my self this is incredibly addictive and soothing for the soul, amazing. I can see however how this may be too intoxicating and cloying for some or even if worn in the wrong mood. This stuff is green, brown, yellow, sweet, salty, edible, inedible, herbaceous, woody, warm, cold, damp, dry all at the same time. Every time I focus on certain aspects of the fragrance I can switch my nose to contradict itself and reinvent what I'm sensing, its quite difficult for me to make a concluding comment on how this fragrance smells as a whole singular smell! Definitely one of the most unique fragrances I've ever tried and the quality of the ingredients is absolutely undeniable. This and to be honest all of the Slumberhouse fragrances are how the Maison Margiela Replica line should have been carried out. While I do love the Replica line and I understand the price-points are entirely different, Baque is the kind of thing that truly roots out memories and vividly encapsulates moments in time :D I would love to see a blue/marine or even fresh type interpretation next from Slumberhouse! EDIT: I was expecting this to be linear all the way through but a few hours later I’m detecting a huge coconut type smell and the chocolatey smell I was getting earlier is now a much dustier cocoa. This stuff keeps getting more interesting, but I prefer the initial few hours a little more. Also after a bit of research on how apricot is often interpreted in perfume and meant to smell I think I have been picking it up all along with the bitter sweet thing I had mentioned earlier mixed with the waxy vanilla pod smell!

Hubba, hubba, hubba. Booming, blooming, beautiful stuff. Thanks to the astonishing generosity of a fellow Fragrantician, I've spent most of 2020 so far cushioned in pillowy billows of the sheer joy of Slumberhouse. (I'm sorry but this is going to get gushy ... disclaimer: absolutely no sponsored or biased comment here.) And with Baque I've journeyed to the sweetest of sweet spots yet, stumbling into a whole world of rich, spicy, damp, botanical, woody, REAL tobacco brought to an absolute peak of deliciousness with apricot that's just sweet enough, yet real enough, to round it all out. It's got that same thick, bouncy, bass-heavy quality and performance which always make the house products so worthwhile. Almost goes without saying - it's a Slumberhouse, so sillage is solid, projection bossy, longevity scarily good. It's perfectly unisex and despite being recognisably niche, it's not so quirky that anything get hostile; the artemisia and ambergris add brilliantly almost-bitter, almost-dirty notes to cut the sweetness, without getting so edgy they scare you. Baque is pretty perfectly triangulated between the barnstorming tobacco of Jeke, the fruitiness of Kiste and the sun-scorched hay field of Sova, so those are some truly heavenly acres to stroll through. (The lovely authentic apricot at times vaguely reminded me of Serge Lutens Lutens Daim Blond, which is a longtime favourite of mine, but Daim Blond seems somehow SMALLER to me, in every way, after smelling this: a cute little ginger house cat, now that I've met a rugged mountain lion. ) Baque's moody colour - in the vial, and in my mind - and immense forcefulness per drop are just breathtaking. Almost overwhelmingly pleasurable, to my nose; there's literally nothing about it which I do not love. (except maybe the risk of staining a garment with it). THANK YOU, my fragrance friend - it's hovering around zero in London right now and still the aura of Baque has warmed and brightened up my whole weekend. No star rating in the world could do this justice. ADORE. ETA: Finally got a bottle and even more in love with it as autumn dark draws in - but be aware: this lives almost FOR EVER on textiles. I don't find that much of a problem (its afterlife is just as lovely as when it's on skin in full force), but be warned - if you get this on a coat or jacket it's going to stay there for a very, very long time. (It's still hanging around after upwards of a fortnight on a wool/cotton mix jumper). For me this is just added value, but if you DON'T like smelling old perfume on worn garments and want to smell completely different every day it might be a hurdle.

تنباکوی شکلاتی شروع بسیار تند اسپایسی گیاهی و به مشام من فوران زیره و گلپر و دارچین در کنار تنباکوی خشک بسیار کلاسی و شیک ، شروع عطر و جنس تنباکو یادآوره له ژو سون فه جووی هست به خصوص حضور میوه های خشک و لواشک زرد آلو به این شباهت دامن می زنه اگرچه باکو بسیار پخته تر و خوش برخورد تره ، هر چه از عمر کار می گذره از اون فضای ادویه ای و گرم و خشک فاصله می گیره و با اضافه شدن وانیل و شکلات شما رو با وجهی دیگر از تنباکو در این کار روبرو می کنه که بسیار دلنشین بوزی و گیاهی و خوشمزه اس ، فوق العاده است تغییرات این عطر و کاملا حساب شده ، شخصا از بوییدنش روی پوست سیر نمی شم ، محفلی شبانه و گرم ‌از ویسکی ، تنباکو ، میوه خشک و شکلات ، اتاقی نیمه روشن نیمه تاریک ، حضوری ناآشنا و چهره ای غریب که گویی لبخنداش را بارها دیده ای و به حافظه سپرده ای ، وانیل تلخ و کمی سنتتیکه ولی از هارمونی بسیار خوبی در کنار سایر نت ها برخورداره ، فضای گیاهی عطر هم تغییر چهره می ده ولی همچنان محسوس و ملموسه به شکلی که به مشام من از ابتدا تا انتها باکو بر روی بستری کاملا گیاهی که تنباکو تنها بخشی از اون هست اجرا می شه برای من قسمت ناراحت کننده حضور مصنوعی امبروکسان در بیس هست که شخصا علت حضور ناهماهنگ و مصنوعی اش رو نفهمیدم البته چنان کمرنگه که می شه نادیده اش گرفت ، در ادامه رایحه شیرین و شیرین تر می شه و کمی حالت انیمالیک و عسلگونه ای پیدا می کنه همچنین از قدرت تنباکو کاسته می شه و برای مدتی طولانی رایحه شیرین وانیلی میوه ای و شکلاتی ادامه پیدا می کنه باکو پخش بسیار هوشمندانه ای داره ، انگار یک سری نت های خوشایند انتخاب شدن تا پخش بی نظیری داشته باشن و اطرافیان رو در رایحه ای محشر غرق کنن و بعضی نت ها تا انتها بر روی پوست باقی می مونن تا خود شخص به صورت کاملا شخصی از حضورشون لذت ببره ، ماندگاری هم عالی و نزدیک به یک روز 7.5 از 10

Boozy, Smoky, Ashy. The edge of rotting fruit at the beginning. The middle of smoked dried fruit at the end. Like looking down into deep dark lake of tobacco cured fig water. This is Billie Holiday singing Strange Fruit, This is Sarah Blasko singing Flame Tree from Little Fish Broader and smoother than Jeke. Doesnt have the harsh ash dry wood of Jeke (the balsamic notes in Jeke keeps the love affair alive). Baque just beautiful. [Update 1] The more the revisits, the more the love. After a few hours, everything settles down and I get a soft buttery nutty hue. Smoke is very soft now. Just lovely. Agree that projection drops down somewhat. Longevity is around 4 hours compared to Jeke with approximately 18 hours 4.5/5 [Update 2] I'm relagating Baque to the House of Unobtanium Tried buying a bottle of Baque - waste of time - unfindable even via Slumberhouse. And no response from Slumberhouse when emailed multiple times. Has Slumberhouse lost interest in Baque ? Has Baque (like Mozart) fallen into the grave of Creative Commons ? The hand written label indicates Baque was an early exercise. But still the want goes on. Open message to Josh Bring back the love Bring back Baque I'd be willing to pay to get this happening again......

Pure tobacco heaven-- much better than TF T.Vanille without that one's powdery fluff dry-down. It's deep, dark, somewhat resinous with a sweetness that does not shout apricot to me, just the entirety of tobacco, sans ash and smoke. I love it. For some reason it reminds me of Teo Cabanel's Alahine. I can also see the resemblance, a similarity in the DNA to Serge Lutens' work. It does have that stewed fruity quality. Great scent, and a must try- sexy and comforting.

I wanted a deeper syrupy type of tobacco cent. This one is quite nice! I get the dusty books with the syrup tobacco. Almost as if you’re reading in an old library with an old-fashioned with stone fruits. I did buy my bottle secondhand. It has macerated a bit I will say this does stain my skin which I think lends to the deep depth of this tobacco. It projects while in the heat if sprayed correctly.

this is beautiful. it starts off smelling like dense damp tobacco soaked in high quality cognac. stewed peaches and apricots appear in the background mixing with cedar wood. as with a lot of Slumberhouse releases, the hay/straw note is present for the entire duration of the fragrance. haven't kept track of performance but it does last a long time and has good projection to my nose.

My goodness. This is one of the best fragrances I ve ever smelled. Many fragrances with apricot smells artificial in this one it smells like literally dried apricot, the tobacco gives a smoky vibe without being too much with some quality nice ambergris. Smells great, you will get noticed just it is soo hard to find and soo expensive, get your hands on it if you can :)

That’s veeeery unique: smell like one of these sweet and bitter aperitif liquors with lots of herbs and balsamic notes. Also beautiful dry tobacco is present here. It blends well with other herbs and sweeter ambery base. Love it! Follow me on IG: scent.guide

I adore this line. Kiste, Jeke, Baque, all of it. They are similar in many ways. Rich, boozy, dried fruits, gourmand. I absolutely love it. Using up my sample! (Don't get a lot of tobacco, just a rich chewy dried fruit with tonka and rum)

The most gorgeous resinous syrupy tobacco I've ever smelt. Imagine Jeke but with a lighter more fruitier playful vibe, same maple syrupy base just amplified 10x, truly a gem of a fragrance.

Update after a few years: this is actually a wonderful sweet but not too sweet boozy scent. Pasty dried fruits like plums or raisins. also very dark juice that can stain your clothes

Basque Goopy alspice-y infused sweet fruity tobacco artemisia amberine malto played on repeat. Goopy fans unite! Smells of high quality isolate blends and absolutes, bready root calamas-y lovage-y notes and sweet boozy davana -apricot jam-not my always my jam ( due to them wearing a bit thick and sticky a bit like jam) &-like Jeke or others they smell like you could go to your and pantry and be two sheets to the wind make delicious nose satisfying Basque Slumberhouse perfumes-spices, stone fruit accords throw a rustic farm house in, whisky, tobacco notes...always with the amberine & let it simmer and reduce down to a sweet, sweet reduction. Perhaps Josh is just bored of it all too. It’s just too easy to satisfy our olfactory sweet tooth now with these simple pleasures. Slightly tweaking formulas that been made of his. But the simple pleasures, satisfying a sweet tooth, olfactory visiting rustic farm houses, we picture ourselves in the perfume-pipe smoke, apple orchards and haystacks that IS what makes life sweet. So, jam on Josh -jam with those sweet though often goopy jams. Basque is making us happy.

I was glad to obtain Baque via blind buy after it was reintroduced in 2017 and while it's not up to the very high level of most the house's perfumes, it's still strong and leaves an impression. I echo the reviewer who likened it to stewed fruits, as I repeatedly turn to this analogy. Genre-wise, it's boozy and woody more so than fruity, though, and while I get hints of tobacco leaf, it feels wholly dominated by the apricot and vanilla that render the final product so sweet. It's slightly creamy and spicy as well but these are lesser descriptors. Baque's longevity is still excellent like most Slumberhouse fragrances but its projection is certainly slightly lower than most of the house's other offerings. Certainly this is one I'd recommend fans of Slumberhouse trying as there's a thread in it that connects it Josh's other creations, but for those new to the house, it does not represent its best, in my opinion. Still, a bottle I'm happy to hang onto and occasionally use. 7 out of 10

Coffee with vanilla syrup and booze-cherry tobacco in a cedar wood humidor. Italian plums, the kind they dry for prunes, and wormwood dust underneath. Another scent I'd find cloying on a man but delicious on a butch woman. Lighter than Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille, but no less intriguing.

This is the scent of stirring your Manhattan with a peppermint stick when you could still smoke in bars. It is a *strong*, whiskey, tobacco, apricot scent that people will probably either love or hate.

Baque is a gourmand fougere from Slumberhouse which promises fine and truly improper perfumes. Most of the offerings from this line are strange resinous beauties that are sensual, dark and often mysterious. Baque is no different. It is sort of Jeke combined with Kiste. The main note is apricot which is surrounded by cedar, vanilla, tobacco leaf, artemisia and ambergris. This is sort of a Sleepy Hollow Tim Burton kind of a fragrance to give you an idea of what you are in for. It is a sweet and mysterious smell with shades of dark hovering in the background. Very beautifully composed, this is yet another winner from this very unusual and eclectic line, which has become my favorite perfume house along with CDG. Note: Baque has been discontinued and was recently made available as a limited edition of 44 bottles by the perfumer, now sold out. I was lucky enough to score one of these. Update. 12/22/2017. Baque is now available as a regular non limited release again.

Once on a trip to Russia, I was introduced to a national fruit dessert concoction that translated to “compote”- Basically boiling various fruits in water and then adding spices, sugars, surely something else. My Western palate never did quite adjust to its peculiarities. It was a cloying flavor, concentrated and dense. There is also a beverage version of compote, often served warm, sometimes with alcohol added (it’s RUSSIA after all). Baque is the parallel olfactory sensation of eating/drinking compote. Apricot compote, to be exact. Dense, spiced, somewhat boozy. Keeps you warm on those -25 degree days.

I tried Baque in search of my dream tobacco, and woof, yes, it does smell like Maker's Mark. In my opinion, not in a good way. Baque reminds me of partying inside frat houses, days I don't miss at all. Looking at the votes and reviews makes me feel crazy. If anyone else got all booze and no tobacco, or a headache at first sniff, know you're not alone. Fortunately for Baque lovers, the sillage is berserk. Granted, I am not a light dabber. (If I love the way a perfume smells when it's overpowering, then I really, truly love it.) But Baque lingered in my room for two days.

Doesn't smell boozy on me. Didn't detect any fruit. It just smells like strong tonka sweetness in a cupboard that used to store tobacco. Masculine and sweet in a stale way.

Baque is, in the most literal sense, “a perfume,” except saying that feels like calling a thunderstorm “a bit of weather” (i.e. technically accurate but missing the point entirely), because what it actually does on skin, in air, in memory is less like smelling a thing than being drafted into a temporary ecosystem where the borders between tobacco, honey, and wood are not stable categories so much as overlapping vectors of density, sweetness, and faint rot, which is another way of saying you spend the entire wearing toggling between comfort (sticky warmth, dried fruit pressed into old planks, a nostalgic hum you can’t place) and disquiet (humidity edging toward spoilage, an almost fungal undertone that makes you wonder whether beauty and decay are in fact the same process viewed at different speeds). And the structure, or rather the refusal of structure, is crucial here, because unlike 99% of perfumes, which adhere to the polite fiction of top/mid/base (a linearity invented less for truth than for marketing diagrams), Baque simply arrives as a monolith, or maybe a weather front, the whole thing at once, and then instead of progressing it just shifts emphasis, like watching a storm cloud from underneath as it morphs but never dissipates, and the result is you’re not “wearing” it so much as occupying it, like a room with invisible walls. This, by the way, is why Josh Lobb (Slumberhouse’s one-man operation, notorious for vanishing scents, discontinuations, and a release schedule that resembles the erratic orbit of a dying satellite) inspires the kind of discourse usually reserved for cult filmmakers or outsider artists. Baque isn’t user friendly, it isn’t versatile, it has no interest in being anyone’s “signature scent." It’s too heavy, too dense, too insistent...but it etches itself into memory with a persistence that’s disproportionate to the minutes or hours you actually spend inside it. The odd part is that Baque should, by all laws of chemistry and logic, collapse into sludge. Too much sweetness + too much resin + too much weight = cloying disaster...but instead it somehow balances right on that impossible line where attraction and repulsion are indistinguishable. One person will tell you it smells like artisanal pipe tobacco lacquered in molasses, another will insist it’s a damp wooden cabinet that hasn’t been opened since Nixon, and both will be correct, because Baque is not about what it “is” so much as what it does to perception, which is to force you into the uncomfortable realization that the line between “pleasant” and “unpleasant” is not fixed but situational, context-dependent, and maybe even imaginary. It’s not perfume as accessory. It’s perfume as event. Which makes it unbearable for some and unforgettable for others. And possibly, if you’re willing to stand inside the storm long enough, both at once. And maybe that’s the point.

Newest batch of Baque has unfortunately taken out the most interesting aspects of the opening and turned them into the current sickly sweet, honeyed dna found in Kiste and Jeke post 2023. New Baque is essentially 98% similar to my nose with old Baque however I loved the previous versions darker, overripe apricot, and drunken raisin vibes better than this newer, syrupy, honeyed take. I wish Baque would’ve seen an upgrade however after the first 20 minutes or so it’s about 100% identical to the previous version except it’s a tad bit sweeter. The tobacco note here is difficult to find from a distance unless you’re nose is pressed up to skin. The honeyed synth tobacco note is the same accord you find from Perfumer’s Supply House and I’d suspect Josh Lobb either uses this identical accord or he purchases the tobacco base straight up. I suspect with how spot on this accord in Baque is to the PSH accord I have a feeling they’re the same product. The tobacco note Upclose on skin is incredible. It’s what initially had me fall in love with indie/artisan perfumery and up until Baque I had never smelled such a realistic pipe tobacco/vanilla tabac sort of note anywhere. That was back in 2018 and things have surely changed. Anyways I initially sold Baque because I got bored with how monotone this composition is. Sultan Pasha does a similar tobacco note in Tabac Grande however it’s elevated and uses real ambergris verse the synthetic ambergris in Baque. It’s also quite prominent to the point that you smell a strong, breathy ambergris note for the majority of the wearing. At this point Baque is no longer the unicorn I once thought it was. This new iteration cements that idea for me. Tabac Grande from Sultan Pasha is a much more superior blend if anyone wants to see what this kind of fragrance would smell like made by a sincere, disciplined perfumer.

SOTD: Baque Slumberhouse Josh Lobb I find Baque as a consistently more wearable Tobacco than its more popular brother Jeke. Its grainy syrupiness and its Ambergris-led mineralic traces give it a touch of lightness that the more abrasive Jeke misses. Is it peculiar though that the first thing I smell in Baque is Tea (unlisted); the green as well as the black variety. It is the Tea that passes the baton to the Tobacco: again much more rounded and centered than the more astute, bare naked Tobacco I found in Jeke. I get little of Apricot here, no fuzz no peachy sweetness. There is a hint of honeyed syrupiness, likely due to Davana, which I also suspect is the culprit responsible for conjuring up in my mind a zephyr carrying the scents from undulating green fields of Tea. I perceive Ambergris faintly; salty, breezy, fresh.. there's trace amounts of it but enough to give Baque a lightness that would otherwise be missing with the more denser and heavier materials. It's not far-fetched to suggest that Baque is equally as much Davana as it is Tobacco, hence the Vetiver-like rootiness as well as the mineralic maple-like Tea allusion along with the thick syrupiness.. all of which equally tickle my fancy. There could just as well be Immortelle in here, though I don't know if Lobb has ever put Immortelle in any of his creations. It just seems like the thing that would go over so well in a composition like Baque. My only complaint with Baque is a gripe I hold with many a Slumbers.. On skin, the experience lasts for 3 or so hours before vanishing. Good things not lasting long enough is a truism as old as perfume itself, so I try not to gripe about it and move my focus instead on enjoying the spicy beaut Baque actually is. The previous batch of this wasn’t a red juice like the 2024 version now is..I first fell in love with it early last year & honestly I won’t obsess & try to study batches of any fragrance & try to attempt at picking it apart! Sadly some of it becomes about money & they weaken the fragrance & we can’t help but to notice!! That’s not the case here!!! It’s still the same rich & opulent hay & tobacco mixed with the rum, raisins apricots & feeling as if stewed & simmering in a pot on a stove! The fragrance it reminds me of personally Is “Tauer Sundowner” & of course “Sayat Nova” With this Baque completely surpassing them in both as far as the scent itself & the silage is concerned. People look mad crazy consistently on Luckyscent year around, Obviously more than I do for this one to show in stock & get it before it’s gone and in ONE DAY to get 30ml for $200 just to sell it for prob close to triple the price!! That will tell you how good it is...I have a few samples of the 2024 batch & It’s every bit as awesome as the previous batch from last year or year before, Not super sure. Either way there should be no worries of the year or color! But Yes! As said, This is one of my most desirable fragrances to try & own for sure...Trying my best to catch it next time!!

My friend gave me few mililiters of Baque, additionally I ordered a sample from Luckyscents. Baque does similar tricks as others from the brand - creates memories in my head, in my brain. In that case however, these memories are not that closely related to my very own memories, which are a part of my childhood, a part of my life. It opens up with a strong hay note that almost instantly reminded me of Sova. But it’s quite different from Sova, yet similar. It’s almost like Sova and Jeke decided to have a baby. So yes, pretty darn strong organic note is prominent on my skin. It changes into slightly boozy alcoholic note mixed with delicate herbaceous note and a little bit of tobacco - raw and tobacco smoke is also there. However, I must say, that compared with Baque Jeke (tell your pick with the formula, it doesn’t matter in that case) is a super smoky tobacco-cade bomb. The only one that might be considered as boozy as Baque - is a new Jeke 2022. After that there’s not that much going on as the scent keeps drying down to its ambery base. Longevity is over 9 hours, sillage depends on the sprays used - and I’d say less is more with Baque. Interesting. I’ll stick to my samples and see how much more it can surprise me (I believe it can, a lot).

I don't wear this one nearly as much as I should. It is probably the most wearable SH in the line. And if I'm being honest, probably the nicest one. Juicy, boozy stonefruit with warm tobacco. Yum. It's my job interview perfume. Pleasant, noticeable and it gives you the right amount of confidence required for the position! All 3 elements (booze, peach, tobacco) marry PERFECTLY. They all work well against and with each other, and this lends itself to a really well-polished, well-put-together perfume that, if I'm being honest, I can't imagine HOW or WHY anyone could dislike. It makes no sense to me. None. Is it too sweet? Possibly. Is it too strong? Maybe. Does it last too long? Perhaps. But does it smell good? YOU KNOW IT. There's a slight trace of something woody in the background, possibly a little bit of smoke, but overall, it's just such a pleasant, buoyant and uplifting scent. Not jammy sweet, not cloying in ANY way, just a wonderfully layered scent. Love it. For me, it's the mango of perfumes. You LOVE mangoes, of course you do, but you don't wanna be boring and predictable so you say jackfruit is your favourite fruit, or sapodilla, or something exotic. But this, this right here. This is me.

Intense and penetrating, Slumberhouse Baque reminds me a lot of some of the dark oriental perfumes of the house of Serge Lutens. There's the same dried fruit mixed with very concentrated woods and spices. Yes, this could easily be a Serge Lutens perfume! Do I like it? Well, there is a sort of rankness to the opening minutes of this composition which makes it less appealing as a perfume which I would choose to don to go just about anywhere. Would people think that I need to bathe? is a question which comes to mind upon sniffing the big sillage of this potent elixir. Probably Baque, like its likely inspirations from the house of Serge Lutens, is better suited for an occasional wear at home. To me, this is an event scent more than a creation which I would reach for in order to perfume myself. I appreciate the quality of the materials here, but in the end, Baque is not something that I really have any interest in smelling like. I admit that this creation raises the interesting question: what is perfume? I am confident that Serge Lutens devotees would love this composition.

Prior to looking at the reviews, I notioned this to be akin to a fruity version of Serge Lutens Arabie. Slumberhouse doesn't lie. If the juice is brown, the vibe is brown; If the juice is green, the vibe is green and so on and so fourth. No exception here. The vibe is golden brown with both tobacco and apricot coxswaining the oriental ship past glaciers of vanillas. This opens with an energized note of apricot perky in its splendor sitting atop a very dark brown tobacco/amber base. I didn't getting a ton of artemisia but the amount i did receive was very necessary for balancing as this creation is top heavy with sweetness. The smell is quite dark, as advertised. The cedar presence is very subtle and comes in towards the end. The union is realized as a faux dark, roasted malt thus the union is realized. A well balanced and tasty fragrance this is. Slumberhouse is sorta like the New England Patriots, you can always count on them to win and win big. Baque is another trophy for the Josh Lobb trophy case. Combat winter with this one!

Baque is a masterpiece for those who love small batch bourbon whiskey and pipe tobacco. The fragrance opens with a blast of finely aged whiskey with a touch of muddled fruits. The opening is every whiskey connoisseur’s olfactory dream. The simplicity of this fragrance allows for the dense, apricot laced tobacco to slide into the heart without becoming muddy or overpowering. As the scent continues to develop, a dry cedar humidor appears which brings out a beautiful incense core on a bed of vanilla and ambergris. The tobacco never steals the show however it’s front and center from start to finish. If you love tobacco this is a holy grail. I would describe Baque as being as dense as sweet molasses without becoming motor oil thick. The fragrance lays heavy on the skin yet soft and powdery in the sillage which makes it much more versatile than you’d expect. Performance is uncanny. Overall this is a 10/10 and a solid blind buy if you love whiskey and pipe tobacco.

This goes on very strong, but settles quickly into a dense combination of ashy smoke that's similar to Jeke, but with a more rich, amber based center to it. One reviewer noted that it smells like Maker's Mark and, while it's got that boozy thing that many Slumberhouse fragrances have, to me it's got more of a blend of spicy raisins to it. I guess the closest comparison would be Ambre Sultan, but this is far more dirty / ashy. Longevity and sillage are jaw-dropping, of course. I put a tiny amount of it on around 7am and 12 hours later, it's still radiating. In this sense, it's like all of the Slumberhouse line in that around the 6 hour mark, it really settles into something else entirely -- either that, or you have. Amazing. Wearing this again today and just wanted to add a new observation. At times, the projection of this scent seems to drop way down, but once you start to move, the smoke aspect becomes very strong and even leaves a trail. Totally weird!

Very affronting at first spray. Boozy in a sharp, almost bitter, tincture-esque way. Almost as though an expensive whisky cocktail has made its reappearance after one too many of them, sweetness of whisky slightly tainted by the acidity of bile. First 5 minutes or so are quite difficult. After that, I get a hyper-realistic, untempered, dry, tannic tobacco just barely sweetened by vanilla. But there’s an internal struggle going on, a battle between bitter and sweet. I struggle (and fail) to find the apricot here, or any fruit. So the bitter wins out and I don’t know if I like that. The entire composition is dry, acrid, smoky, papery and crunches like autumn leaves. I like challenging and I like dark. Ava Luxe Kama is one of my top 5. But I don’t know if I can wear this. It’s pungent in a way that I can’t tolerate. I’ve only tried Jeke and Ore from this house, (2022 Jeke), and found both much more wearable than Baque. I will likely sell my bottle.

Accidentally clicked two and was charged for 2 luckyscent samples of Baque which turned out to be a great mistake last time this dropped almost 2 years ago. 'Baque' is my favorite Slumberhouse offering, and I'm not precisely sure why. It isn't necessarily unique, as resiny fruits aren't an uncommon theme in the fragrance world. I don't even care for apricots that much, and it IS very heavy on the apricot: the first two things that came to mind when I smelled 'Baque' were apricots sitting in dense syrup, and a recently used ashtray. But all that being said, perhaps its 'Baque's high quality and realistic delivery, or the fact that I receive a compliment from someone literally each time I wear it, I'm not sure. All I know for certain is that I find 'Baque' to be a highly alluring, dark, VERY boozy nighttime favorite, and I'm genuinely disappointed that it has been discontinued.

This is tobacco, ambergris, little bit of dried fruit and booze. It's such a simple composition at heart but the strength of it comes from the quality of the raw material, especially the ambergris. I have a bit of experience with ambergris materials and this smells like the white, highly oxidized/aged kind with not much fecal facets but only some saltiness and skin-like muskiness. I would even go far as to say that this composition is a very ambergris forward scent as I can both smell it right up front and feel it's effect giving the whole composition dimensionality. With many Slumberhouse offerings, I wished this was less sweeter but it's a great fragrance regardless.

everything i have to say has already been said... a wonderfully warm, dense and rich vanilla-tobacco number with peach/apricot/stonefruit (i'm seriously CRAP at discerning the difference!) that reminds, but not EXACTLY, one of kiste, to some extent. there's a hidden, lurking dark element, ashy smoke, if you will, the same that is apparent in jeke and norne (kinda) and it all works together with various components shining through at times whilst others fade away temporarily. it's amazingly well put together, and it really is a jaw-droppingly smooth scent. i love how it works all together at the same time and keeps evolving and then de-volving again. must try.

I didn't get the tobacco whisky love others did. It is boozy tobacco absolute with that odd rank edge tobacco absolute has, sugary sweet tobacco notes that cloy, some unfortunate powdery notes, sticky resin and a sharp, harsh wood. Also there's something pasty in there.It fluctuates in and out of an acceptable tobacco fragrance into argh argh argh. I hated it. looking for a better tobacco fragrance without the rank, rotting wet leaves of tannic tobacco, without powder or cloy or sharp screaming wood. Try this one before committing to a full bottle.

More bitter "Kiste" This is "Kiste" (their fragrance) with more tobacco on, beside adding ambergris to it. Also it has recognizable amount of artemisia. The drydown shows the true color of ambergris, and atremisia with darkened tobacco apricot mix. It's quite dark yet apricoti. Very interesting since "Kiste" is one of my favorites. It's good that they brought it back cause i read once that it was discontinued. Edit (1 hour later) this goes "Kiste" identical after 6 minutes in although it begun kind of different.

Review of the new version. Off the bat I am reminded slightly of Baraonda, Vanille Havane, as well as OF by Kilian. I smell some stanky davana in here that reminds me of Old Fashioned, as well as To my Father by Vilhelm. Not my favorite thing in a scent, but it does add to the whisky/rum accord. Overall, I’m not crazy abt this one. It’s veeeerrrryy dense and potent, but I wish it had a bit more tobacco or fruit, and was just a bit less dank/boozy. I believe vanille havane is the best iteration here 😁

If youve ever smelled asian medicinal ginseng, this is how baque smells. When i dabbed this onto my skin for the first time, it immediately transported me back to my youth going shopping w my folks and being in the herbal medicines section of the asian market. Im not saying it smells terrible, but i cant wear it because it just smells like medicinal ginseng to me and nothing else. Perhaps if youve never smelled that before youd enjoy baque.

Wanted to love, but it didn't work I get a rich apricot fragrance with resin and tobacco,I think I get a little smokiness too This is more fruity,mature and just did not fit my personality. This is unisex in my opinion, but do not know this fragrance would be best for. Maybe a older women looking for something unique for tea time on a fall evening. I recommend a sniff, it is unique and not for me

I wouldn't buy this. It's strange and I don't really enjoy it. Dark amber vanilla with some kind of stone fruit in there. It's powerful and strong. Not too sweet, strange. UPDATE: 04/11/2019 I got four comments on this while wearing it. I don't know if it was because people liked it or because it is so strong. If you want to get attention or be noticed, this will help.

This is extremely similar to Chopard's Oud Malaki. OM has a synthetic undertone which I don't get from Baque but if you want an available and affordable dupe, I would recommend checking it out. Not sure if I like this yet but I can see how others do. It's very sweet

Which Baque is being reviewed? I have an earlier bottle (only used a few times-99.9999% full) and it smells nothing like the current Maple syrup versions-thank goodness.
