Fjerne

Buckwheat, coconut, spiky patchouli, dry cocoa, an overall balmy sort of buttery tone, the faintest whiff of unidentifiable florality, all draped in clay dust. I find this extremely wearable and complex, while still fitting within the aesthetic framework that the brand has established. Big caveat here:I have not tried Lanz, but I'm quite familiar with Baque (which is perhaps my least favorite of all other slumberhouse scents) and I don't see the similarities Rbalkris referenced, I actually feel that if this is derivative of previous slumberhouse scents, it feels like the notes of Ore played with the timbre of new sibet. But even then, I find the comparison weak, as the other slumberhouse works all share a lot in common, surely Jeke and Baque are as close-relatives as Fjerne and Baque or Kiste or Ore for that matter. The double edged sword of a strong olfactive identity is general homogeneity and interbreeding. I hesitate to call this a gourmand as every note besides the coconut, cocoa and butter accord feels deeply inedible. The base has a coniferous green spikiness to it that takes ages to really dominate, but I found myself catching whiffs of it all throughout the day, jumping out from beneath the smoother, more edible accords that show themselves when more deliberately sniffing. In that sense, this does not feel too far from something like Korrigan, or even Coromandel for that matter, where a sense of place is presented along with the scent of what is to be consumed in said place. Its a coconut custard tart being eaten out of an earthenware platter in an apothecary stocked with dangerous or poisonous herbs and greens. Admittedly that implies a sort of disjunct between the top and the bottom, the mise en place and the food if you will, and I think thats selling Fjerne short. The sweet components are perfectly blended with the deeper darker slumberhouse-ade, so much so that the two components boundaries' appear blurry and the aromatic elements of the greenish bitter undertones feel just as essential to the creamy coconutty dustiness as vice versa. Keeping the juice clear feels like a very intentional creative decision for how Fjerne is to be perceived as well, I imagine even visual expectations can breed a sort of oppressive limitation to the creative expression of the perfumer. Perhaps the goodbyes are directed at the old fans who endlessly demand darker and deeper juices when they already have ample options. I don't think this is the greatest scent in the slumberhouse canon, but those all still exist and (if the webstore opens back up...) they're generally still available. This is certainly different territory but I don't see anything wrong with that. This is the most wearable and crowd pleasing the brand has smelled since Kiste. Certainly not ambrosia, but a very pleasant and intriguing work. But take that with a grain of salt as I may just be another die hard loyalist :).

Maybe the easiest Slumberhouse to wear, due to the general likability of its notes and its medium-bodied, lighter-than-usual density, Fjerne often feels like a mashup of several Slumberhouse fragrances at once; specifically, Sova, LANZ, Sixes & Sevens, Jeke, Sibet, Ore...and even a little Pear + Olive. It’s a dry, woody fragrance that smells largely centered around a sandalwood note but also brings some gourmand flourishes to the mix. When it opens I immediately smell toasted coconut (like those shavings you decorate cakes with) and as I continue to wear it there is a constant vanilla/caramel theme weaving its way through the woods. In addition, there’s a slight but completely tolerable, animalic presence at all times, a tiny bit of funk beneath everything (this animalic aspect is similar to that in Sibet...but lesser here). Fjerne is less obviously complex and expansive than the old Slumberhouse fragrances, and is more compressed and dialed-in, more structurally in tune with releases like Sibet, Sixes/Sevens, and Lanz. It wears easily, rarely too thick and never clumsy, giving pleasant wafts of dry caramellic, tonka-infused woods and subtle coconut for hours. While it catches the air well with an aromatic quality, for the most part it sits close to the skin, projecting with a solid, comfortable presence. Fjerne wears well in the summer, which it is now, and should work just as well all year around. In my top 25% of the house’s releases, Fjerne gets an excellent rating of 9/10. Side note: If you are interested in this sold-out, limited edition, try to find it sooner rather than later, as prices are still probably reasonable. A year from now they will not be.

Surprisingly my most complimented Slumberhouse fragrance by a pretty wide margin. Up close I get a very natural, simple sandalwood with some subtle gourmand notes. My coworker describes the scent from where she sits a few feet away and across a barrier as a "mellow, natural cedar-- comforting and inoffensive." It may not be the most ostentatious scent in the brand's lineup ::cough, Jeke:: but people around you will probably like this and are likely to let you know. For those same reasons I expect this will get plenty of hate from the community since it's not really dark or edgy in any way, but like it or not, this is pretty clearly Slumberhouse's dumb reach scent, and in that sense I think it's pulled off really well. It's calm, versatile, mass appealing, doesn't beg for your attention, and maybe most impressive, still manages to smell distinctly Slumberhouse. I kind of understand why there was a period when this was sold in larger sizes because it's one of few releases from the brand where you don't need to be super gentle on the atomizer, Black Grev being the only other of which I'm currently aware. I can potentially see someone being disappointed with this if it's their first Slumberhouse purchase, and they're expecting fireworks, but otherwise I think Fjerne is a solid addition to the brand's lineup. The most underrated Slumberhouse IMO.

Right out the bottle, there's a gentle, dainty incense quality to this. If you have ever tried Japanese incense, this is what it comes across as. Unburnt incense, something like sandalwood or Japanese cedar incense. Additionally, there's a gourmand element to this. Can't determine if it's pastry/doughy or something a little more primary like wheat/cereal, it's hard to tell. But I must say, a lot of the other reviews mentioning OG Ore or other SH scent connections, I don't see it. This is like nothing I have smelt before. It's utterly new and I can't compare it to anything else. That said, it totally falls into the SH portfolio without any problem. Now that I think about it, there is a trace element of smoke, but not that much. Worth trying if you can track it down, of course. Not my favourite, but I do like it...

My opinion is the complete opposite of rbalkris'. Fjerne is an amazing fragrance that brought instant happiness to my nose the minute I put it on. Comforting is one word that comes to mind immediately. Yes, I smell the coconut and buttery cookie accords along with the sandalwood, but there is also another note dancing on the fringes that makes me think of geranium...almost a hint of Penhaligon's English Fern dancing in and out of my consciousness under the beautiful gourmand mains. The other thrilling note is an almost coniferous breeze also dancing with the other notes! AWESOME!!! LOL... This is beautiful and I am immediately impressed with Fjerne. I'm looking forward to spending more time with this amazing addition to the Slumberhouse line. What a wonderful day!

I have a 5 or so ml sample from Josh himself, with 'Fjerne WSE' written on it -- no idea what the FSE stands for, BTW. It's a wonderful, wheaty, white chocolatey gourmand scent that isn't like anything else Josh has put out -- it's a dry, grainy, slightly resinous scent that works well, in my opinion. I don't have anything else to compare it against, I'm afraid, so I don't have many reference points. The resin, likely frank or myrrh, comes out a few hours in, but mostly this one is a cereal-inspired scent. Love.

subtle and gorgeous - soft, realistic coconut up front, but not at all sweet. hazelnut and wheat come through after, with a bit of musk, giving it a "baking in a farmhouse kitchen" kind of vibe. settles down with more musk and lactonic sandalwood. you can tell these are expensive raw materials mixed masterfully with aromachemicals - well made and sophisticated, if not revolutionary. but i was catching the scent all day and loving it, so i'm quite happy with this pick up.

Slumberhouse Fjerne is a limited-edition release from 2020 that I had to find on the secondary market as I was a little slow to buy it the first time. It’s very interesting and probably more agreeable than most of the relatively daring house offerings, a sweet, resinous, floral, and musky blend that has a bit of a play doh accord that’s specifically reminiscent of the undertones of Tom Ford Lavender Extreme, albeit without the sharp lavender. The notes are not formally described but my guess would be something along the lines of opoponax, labdanum, sandalwood, tonka, musk, and then perhaps a white floral of some kind. It’s quite comforting, sweet but not saccharine, with powdery and musky touches that nevertheless blend in well, along with sort of play doh accord that I quite enjoy but that I realize may be distracting to some. It performs well but certainly not as well as most of the darker juices in the line (Norne, Jeke, Ore, Sova, etc.). I believe Fjerne’s retail pricing was around the same as other entries in the line, mostly recently $180 for 30ml and in extrait concentration. Increasingly it’s the case that ALL Slumberhouse fragrances feel like limited editions in that the demand is high, the batches are relatively small, and the batches take some time to produce, but I do not believe that Fjerne is making a return, so enjoy it if you have it. Otherwise, the brand is sold through its house website as well as great boutiques like Fumerie and Luckyscent. 7 out of 10

I will not make this review long, Fjerne is Coromandel. It is a crisper and lighter due to added coconut note, making it more "white" in its nature. There are no aldehydes to give that classy Chanel feel to it. Then mid is all the buttery sandalwood, white chocolate vanilla perfume. It is not gourmand in my books, but it is sweet enough, and its very pleasing. Gives comforting feeling. Drydown retains mid notes, but patchouli does appear. It is light patchouli as i can tell, so you wont have any earthy mold. It gives ligh herbal, maybe even bitter effect when compared against sandalwood vanilla body. Very easy to wear, blind buy safe, great longevity, good silage, suitable for all weathers. If you considered Coromandel parfum, i suggest getting this. More juice for same money, and you wont loose scent wise.

Coconut up front, then fades into sandalwood/wheat/tonka. The milk + honey combo plus the mild spiciness smells exactly like horchata de arroz, and my partner said "it smells like I took a bath in horchata." edit: went away for 2 days for work, came back and my partner's wrist still smelled of it (he applied it after his shower and hadn't showered since). The longevity is very impressive.

In reference to the below review, coromandel (edp) is one of my absolute favorites; my experience with Fjerne isn’t coromandel...but I see where the comparison is coming from. For me this has the same sweet booziness of Kiste but with creamy sandalwood instead of tabacco and peaches. Expensive, smooth rum with notes of dried fruit, molasses, vanilla and toasted coconut sandalwood.

Notes: coconut, honey, chocolate syrup, maple syrup, sandalwood and patchouli. Lactonic, creamy and deliciously gourmand. VG. Perfect for festive events in cold weather.

i sprayed it literally twice - and it's not for me, happy to offload a basically full bottle

Sadly a disappointment. Instead of exploring new territories the new offering is a mismash of two older ones. In this case mostly Baque with its cedar, walnut, vanilla, tobacco meets Lanz with its sandalwood and slight ambergris. In addition there is a coconut note. The resulting mix smells almost like the same old stuff with a striking resemblance to Radio Bombay (DSD) and not particularly pleasant. The unisex scent has moderate sillage and good longevity. Advertised as a goodbye of sorts in its notes, it is just a rememberance of what the brand used to offer. But there was something in those eccentric dark resinous juices. This fluffy concoction is as lightweight as they come. Of course the brand has a group of die hard loyalists who will still think this is ambrosia. I beg to differ. This did not move me.

At first I smelled very clearly sunflower seeds. It dried down to a light powdery, dusty concoction with a patchouli twist. What intrigued me is that I detected some hint of coconut shrims. There is no milk in it, but I can smell some smooth milky twist in it. Pair it with a white tuxedo or a white suit and there you have it. You are dressed in white and you smell white. I'm pretty sure there's more to it. Edit May 2024 Me and Fjerne are having sort of a love-hate relationship. I had it twice and got rid of it twice. Fjerne is a sandalwood oriented perfume with huge overload of santalol. Apart from that, a lot of coconut vibes, mostly coconut shrims. Creamy, cozy, comforting, soothing, alluring, evocative. This is not a totally new concept though. I do feel like Fjerne is a „poor cousin” of Chanel Coromandel, or Floris Eau de Santal. Totally not per se, not a blatant, bland copy, no way. It’s like Josh took notes, revamped them, amped up the sandalwood and added some coconut and creaminess. Not 1:1. This lasts more than 12 hours, but is quite ephemeral, comes and goes and whispers softly on my skin. I like it. Don’t feel like I could have said more for now.

I get a cocoa powder dry shortbread, with wheat or possibly some type of rice as well. Whatever it is, the cocoa-grain mix makes me think gourmand, but it functions differently. Look a little deeper and you'll see a glorious coconut meat vibe. Not the mature version, moreso the jelly variety you come across in young coconut. The dry down shifts the focus to a sweet balsamic woods-resin feel. My dad was big into his aromatherapy and so I was exposed to many different essential oils and the sandalwood in the drydown is not the standard Album version slumberhouse has used in the past. This one is either the Hawaiian version or Austrocaledonian version. Still loaded with all the santanol butter we all know and love, this one is just a little drier and woodier. Not what i expected from slumberhouse. Talk about a switch up

🤣🤣🤣I often ask myself what would a normal olfactive observer smell, Happily unaware of intricate tones, notes and nuances Understandable only to Fragranticans’ sensitive nostrils?? What would your sister or uncle or drinking buddy feel once you spray the above concoction? At this point, I haven’t tried the scent myself, but from the description and recollections of the members below I am getting already lost for opinion and intention towards this indi scent. No offence but the reviewers sound like they have swallowed a “wrong” mushroom, experienced blissful magic in a dark wood, and camped later with Pret A Manger snack pack after they found their way back home.

Don't judge a book by it's cover Sandalwood & vanilla, smells reminiscent of Sixes & more specially Lanz. Bad choice of words; they seem to share a base, or elements of their base. The artificer Lobb did it again, brilliantly somehow conjured up a new perfume that just might be a convincing tip of the hand, revealing what we are in store for this FallWinter. He has been in the lab cooking, sparing no materials.

Hmmm... this is odd.... where are the notes? And, odd is also it's name in norwegian, "Fjerne" means for example "distance" places / countries (fjerne strøk / land), and; "delete". Nevertheless, it would have been very interesting to smell this perfume =))
