Deep Ocean Amber

Great fragrance. Found a tester for $100 and blind bought. Not as challenging as some may think. The name is slightly misleading but the bottle color makes up for it in that regard. Resinous scent that gave me the feelings of nature when first applying. Not aquatic at all, but I guess you could convince yourself of the depths of the ocean? There is an alluring amount of sweetness to this fragrance that keeps your nose coming back for more. I feel this is due to the animalic facets blending well with that dusting of sweetness so it’s never ever gourmand or cloying. The sweet nature of this fragrance isn’t anything like modern designers, it’s not a vanilla type sweetness, more so imagine what a sweet resinous amber would smell like if it were such a thing. It’s like a golden, low frequency glowing sweetness rather than a blast of highly radiating sugar. Overall, a phenomenal fragrance that would add some uniqueness to many collections. Worth a sample for sure.

Deep Ocean Amber is not a marine, but a splendid journey into the darkest abysses, with the depth and light salinity of ambergris blending with warm, sensual notes, among which ambrette seeds stand out. Slightly camphorated notes immerse the fragrance in a unique, dark and magnetic atmosphere, making it a fragrance that went beyond any idea I might have had when reading its name or the olfactory pyramid. Well-balanced, intense, wonderful. Like the legendary city of Atlantis underwater, shining despite the depths of the abyss. If you love intense, original and enveloping fragrances, you will be enchanted.

This is a great amber fragrance and one of the best from Sospiro in my opinion. It is a departure from the rest of the line which maybe the reason behind the less favourable reviews. It is not as mass appealing and is slightly animalic. It is not as close to O'Hira as others may suggest but it is every bit as good. Currently available at Maxaroma for $166 which is great value in my view.

I tried this and I give this gem a 10. It is full bottle worthy. If you like the austere and sensual fragrance of sweet ambergris, then you will probably like DOA too. This is very similar to Ambre Tigre by Givenchy. It lasts the whole day, is unisex, and very classy.

Interesting stuff. To be honest, I got this just because of how utterly incoherent it is with the rest of the sospiro lineup. This is the one that is not like the others, in scent profile, in name, and certainly in audience. This release is super nonsensical, as the typical sospiro buyer is definitely not someone who would enjoy something like this. Sospiros are loud, brash, sometimes sweet, always fresh and bright. This is everything but that. This is quiet in sillage, low, deep, and abstract. Makes you wonder why Sospiro, and to some extent, Christian Provenzano, would release this perfume under this brand. The contextual stuff is confusing but the naming is quite good, Deep Ocean Amber makes perfect sense with the actual scent. Very hard to review because of its abstract nature. In that sense, it is very similar to something like Zoologist Squid, as mentioned below, or in my opinion, like MM White Whale. The comparison with the latter is not with its scent profile, but its effect. White whale is an extremely abstract aquatic salty melon ambergris thing as well, but these two scents smell nothing alike. The effect is similar, though. White whale evokes a hazy ship going through rough seas, surrounded by fog. Deep ocean amber takes us under the ocean. Somewhere deep enough that no light thinks of penetrating. You can't see anything, not even your own fingers. Both scents evoke a sense of confusion. Where are we right now? In both scents, violet leaf and ambrette juxtaposes the aquatic and amber elements, giving them a strange, modern aloofness. Sterility. You are not part of the ocean, you are separate, distinct. An outsider looking in. You are in the water, but not wet, not cold, not uncomfortable. You are impossible. This perspective, of a stranger, is the basis of what characterizes these scents, separates them from conventional aquatics, your Sel de Marin or Acqua di Sale. There is no setting, no place, no time. Who am I, even? Not particularly complex. Actually quite modern, minimalist. Dries down linearly. Amber is "dense" not heavy. Quite a big distinction. Dark toned and a bit unintelligible, but does not actually wear heavily. Surprisingly, an all year fragrance, if you like it. A bit smoky, a bit sweet, a bit salty. Interesting textures in this one. The synthetic ambergris accord is quite well made, doesn't feel synthetic. Could be good for layering, but I can't imagine with what. I guess you'll have to test. Worth the sample. Edit: Russian Tea? Really? wtf

Signature worthy. To me, a signature scent is not necessarily your most versatile fragrance, but one you ca get recognized by - example, Vibrato from the same house is super easy to wear anywhere for anything, while this Deep Ocean Amber (DOA) is less versatile with still some versatility but rather stands out as Vibrato has a familiar profile. Got this bottle for $135 and, while it won't be one I wear a lot, it will see more wear during fall/winter due to its performance and not-so-fresh sillage, Nothing "deeply oceanic" aside from a salty darkness in the resinous type of profile - this could be a Blessed Baraka Fraiche or even fresh flanker because to me there is a resemblance in the core of the fragrances, especially the sillage x close quarters experience. Very balsamic, hence the earlier comparison with BB. Quite musky and beautiful in the air - I INSIST, this is a frag to smell in the air, as it is potent and actually strange up-close. Performance is very good with projection for good 2h and about 10h on skin easily detectable. After this, by the deep drydown, the grey musk stands out. Worth the price point I brought up, and this will actually be one to pick up at mid 140s probably. I discourage people from blind buying it, as it can be surprisingly not your thing.

#1665 in my “Tour de Fragrance” I’m a bit surprised that this isn’t really all that strong on the amber notes. It has ambrette, but not enough to smell like marshmallows. The ambergris and benzoin are very light, barely vanillic. It has violet, but just a hint, not really making a floral impression. Mostly it smell’s like a women’s after shower talc. Pleasant, unobtrusive, intimate range. Reminds me of Byredo “Mojave Ghost” and Guess “1981 for Women." I had a girlfriend in college that always smelled fresh from the shower like this, and I thought it was sexy. As with this scent, she was on the androgynous side. I just realized I remember exactly how she smelled. [I also remember she tried to run over me with her car when I broke up with her, so this isn’t all that nostalgic a scent experience for me.] I think it’s an okay scent for women, not men, for intimate wear. Not much silage. Lasts on the skin till lunch. I wouldn’t spend $150 on this. I think women on a budget might be as happy with a $20 bottle of the Guess 1981. Not long lasting, but you don’t worry about over-spraying a $20 EDT. Good Luck and Good Hunting!

This is one of the few fragrances where the marketing copy is accurate. Opens with cool, piney elemi and a touch of floral note (presumably the ambrette). On my resin-loving skin, this lasts quite a while. The handoff from a light floral to light, powdery violet is seamless. The elemi sticks around just long enough for the ambergris note to take over - chilly resin to chilly marine salt balanced by violet. About three hours in, warm resins push into a halo glow. Ambergris notes are often too synthetic. This is a fantastic example of a high quality version. The mix lasts about ten hours on my skin. Overall, a lovely, interesting fragrance that is situationally very interesting. Highly recommend for exploration.

Deep sea, Amber is really not like anything I’ve ever smelled before. The bottle is for collectors that have a deep appreciation and understanding for a complex fragrance. Definetly not for normies. My wife hates it. I really like it. I would not blind buy if your scared of complicated olfactory journeys.

This parfume is not good. Sorry, we can now talk and talk, try to find "something", "arty" yuck. But there is nothing like that here, just some fresh bad ocean coast smell but somewhere that no one goes because weather is so bad all the time. Some brown water and ugly brown and green slimy rocks. Parfume either smell good or not. There is not other philosophy. This one definitely smell like those rocks next to the river or ocean where no one walks, so dirty and muddy, green and slimy. That's what smells like... Not sure how parfumeries are losing creativity trying to make parfume of everything. Come on... make 3 parfumes but make them perfect and unique, good smelling.

Its an interesting fragrance and I am not sure where I am with it.... Its unique, it is dark and mysterious. It is sweet but ancient old smelling with the muskiness. I feel like this is what inside a dark, dank and undisturbed tomb would smell like. It has a sweetness to it from making it go really pungent and animalic, but it is not a safe buy for sure. I like it, but i don't love it. I dislike it, but i don't hate it. Its definitely worth trying and it is not a versatile fragrance to me. It is a mood setter piece of artistry.

A balsamic, musky fragrance, that feels slightly warming because of the ambergris. I feel truly neutral about this scent, it isn't bad but it doesn't inspire me either. For me, this fragrance would smell better if it leaned into spices such as cinnamon, ginger, coriander, coumarin, etc. I may be taking issue with the ambrette note, I don't remember particularly liking it when I sampled Bois d'Ambrette by Atelier Materi. I will say that this fragrance has above-average longevity and sillage, like most other Sospiro scents.

I dislike aquatic, marine fragrances so I figured this was going to be in there. But I was surprised that it was not watery... I honestly am not sure what I'm even smelling here. As useless as this review is, it is not pleasant smelling to me or something I would want to wear. I almost get a booziness with a touch of the violet floral note which is off-putting to me. It is not a clean and uplifting, fresh scent but stagnant and even animalic. This is a definite no and glad I got a free sample.

It's all about amber with this one. It's ambery balsamic with a touch of animalic. Elemi and Ambrette are very short lived and it jumps into heavy amber base. Hard to detect violet in it but it is there very so slightly. Labdanum is of type of dark and it is what that gets it a dark animalic I think. It is beast and use it in moderation. Overall, it's OK but there are much better Amber heavy fragrances out there IMO.

Tons of resinous amber with a very very slight aquatic accord coming from somewhere. Smells nice, but for the price I don’t see myself ever picking this up. It simply isn’t complex or inspiring enough to justify the $250CAD price tag in my opinion.

It is very musky, dark and deep. for me it is a mix of Benzoin, Ambergris and perhaps something slightly smokey. It is clearly a resin and balsamic fragrance. I would suggest it for winter at night time, and I would say you have to be into fragrances before you appreciate this one or like it. It is very much masculine. To be honest I enjoy smelling the sillage/projection more than actually directly smelling the scent. it is good but would say it is requires experience.

Tested on cloth and skin. cloth: the watery and ambery notes last longer before the wood drydown. skin: not as watery and ambery, the wood element is prominent, and more of a "I was just at a bonfire" smell than the pure wood smell it had on cloth. Like it, keeper. Will wear it on both cloth and skin. May layer it to get more of the watery and ambery elements.

It's not an aquatic scent or an ocean scent...actually I don't know why that's even in the name maybe because it has ambergris. Smells like musky animalic baby powder, pretty bad fragrance really.

I used to really love this but then I became sensitive to Orientalgris. Now I can't stand it.

I'm using this discovery for the last 10 days , at different moments and different moods ; dawn,noon, night,sun up , cloudy, depressed, euphoric,static,dynamic ...so if you feel that my review is a hotchpotch ,that because it depends on the moment and the mood . Story 1- the road most travelled "abyss Odyssey" In this chapter, the mainstream path , the perfume act like a vessel that carries you all the way deep to the abyss . - The journey starts with freshness of the elemi and the muskiness of ambrette with a touch of salty sweetness, reminding us of the dive ( the contact of the body with the sea). -Then comes the heart notes: interaction between styrax ( also known as sweet gum) and violet . Awaken our curiosity and preparing us to what is coming next ; a world unknown for most of us . -The story ends when we find ourselves in front of the beauty and the grandiosity of the abyss ,exceeding our conceptualization of space and time .pervaded by the elegance of the ambergris and amplified by the labdanum and benzoin. Story 2 : the road less traveled or the road of ambergris . In contrast to the first chapter ,the story here is told rather than lived. We can imagine it as the way the ambergris is forged far away from us ,deep the kingdom of oceans,in the bellies of whales and made his way to the surface aquiring its marine,sweet ,animal ,earthy, musky radiant scent . Since natural ambergris is illegal in perfumery due to conservation concerns , the parfumer -christian provenzano- use different ambery resinous natural and synthetic ingrédients and materials to tell us the story . It tells us that we can enjoy the beauty of ambergris as well, without killing those beautiful creature . Story 3 : the road of fools / fools just don't know This one is never told , no one knows if its cold or warm ,sweet or salty, dark or bright or all at the same time. Some experienced it like they were on a rock beach . Some feel like they are smelling like dirty musky styraxy sunburn peel . Some experience like being aboard a sailboat at sunset moment shivering the warm air cold . Others smell the odor of bright creamy waxy resinous sunscreen cream . ... Whatever the story you choose ,this fragrance is a piece of art and the real protagonist is ambergris .

It opens with a luxurious labdanum supported by sweet resins, giving it a fruity character that pushes through the ambery heart. The heart develops a deep, mysterious sweet atmospheric earthiness like reddish light gradating through the ocean. As it develops this unique sweetness my wife says “it smells like apples”. Then to the trained nose slowly this glimmering santal accord appears. Like ..a lacing of gold. It definitely ties it all together. I know sandalwood isn't listed here so maybe what I detect is the golden ambergris in the fragrance beginning to come alive, because the ambergris is certainly laid bare later on at the finish. This fragrance profile created here as a whole is a 10/10. Below is why I knock off a few points. At the 4-5 hour mark this frag gets a little too opaque for my taste as overall it transitions back to staying shaded and introverted and not the regal sweet character it has for the first ~3 hours. It may need further maceration to allow the labdanum to deteriorate and the sweet appealing characteristics to overtake. Another thing is that these compounds open up marvelously outdoors, so it might need to be put to more use outside, quite similar to Orca by HoM, which thrives with natural air and body heat. Rating: 7/10 - The textured golden laced opulent accord that develops is a treasure, for sure!! But, I wish the opulence lasted longer into the dry down instead of the unsweetened, opaque reversion..

I have been on the fence about blind buying this fragrance for a few months now. Every single review I have seen had a drastically different description than the other, and I knew the only way was to find out for myself. FragranceLord ran a special where I could snag this for 108 so I figured now is the time... The opening is a dark and resinous amber. Lol. Technically unisex but I believe this will be preferred by men. This is not a blind by safe aquatic fragrance meant for the masses, as you may have expected with the term ocean in the name. I usually hate describing fragrances using the term “amber” because it’s a fantasy accord that means a number of different things, but it truly is the correct terminology here. The dry down is where I’ve gotten better acquainted. A subtle source of sweetness and freshness emerges. The fragrance settles into itself and takes on it’s true form. Maybe it’s because of the name, but I really do get this depiction of being at the bottom of the ocean. As someone who doesn’t typically love Amber fragrances, this is the most intriguing one of its style I have come across. Truly, a unique experience. I think this would be a fantastic base to layer with classic blue freshy fragrances like BDC or Percival. If you like Amber, this is one worth sampling!

With ambrette in the top notes and ambergris in the base notes, amber is the star of the show. The elemi excellently pairs with the amber and styrax. I don't smell much of the violet underneath all the other heavier notes, but I think that's for the better. Also, I don't have scent memory of this particular amber smell and the ocean so that particularly branding is lost on me. However, if I was looking for an amber-forward perfume, I'd reach for this.

Sprayed this on and couldn't stop thinking - "tea". This reminded me of Masque Milano's Russian Tea, the way the amber is manipulated here seems to me very similar to how it's done in MMRT - minus the obvious leather note. Anyway, that's my first impression, ambery tea (touch of smokiness coming from labdanum - but nowhere near O Hira's levels; touch of sweetness in this amber - but the kind that registers more like honey, than like a sweet amber found in, say, Ambre 114).

It surprises me to see all these bad reviews, this is currently one of the best fragrances I’ve ever tried. A balsamic ambergris fragrance with no brightness, nice and dark and definitely my fav from Sospiro from what I’ve smelled. I can see that it might be challenging for beginners, this is not your basic dark fragrance

This is beautiful to me. Resins and incense on a sweet musky base. My daughter smelled it and said it smells like the incense at church (catholic.) It smells nothing like Musk Aoud.
