Peau de Soie

Ughhhh this is so good. The musky, anilamic, chalky opening is very fresh and citrusy. As it dries down, the woods begin to peak through and finally all the edges coalesce and the fragrance begins to purr. This is a really versatile scent. It's sexy, professional, and straddles this beautiful fulcrum point between serious and casual. Could easily transition this from the office to a dinner out. Also suitable as a cozy, enveloping yet fresh sweater scent. Scent 9/10 Versatility 9/10 Performance 7/10

I ́ve used up a sample of this and I really liked it. Soft and sophisticated, I found it easy to wear and quite calming. The powderiness is not baby powder -style but adult, and the musk and woods blend well with it. I already miss it and may have to buy a bottle.

A beautiful fragrance It is very soft and sits close to the skin. I wear it to work daily. It doesn't scream or shout, it gently says "I'm here. I'm elegant. Admire me."

I saw three similar bottles, literally on the Escada stand and rushed to check how on earth they became "more serious". Turns out it was a brand called Starck and they were just "sitting there". I will of course test the other two bottles as well, but on that day it was just impossible. From 18:30 that I sprayed it, liberally I must admit and until twelve o'clock at night I would feel surrounded by a powdery-floral scent that has a masculine edge. The notes listing here mentions: powder, woods, musk and animalic notes. Personally I could sense a plethora of others as well, or at least I got an impression of: ▪spice like in lavander ▪the "clean" version of patchouli bottled in modern mainstream feminine releases ▪white pepper or pink pepper ▪a generic blend of neroli and rose ▪violet/ionones ▪saffron and soft leather somewhere in the development. No rubber, don't worry. And it smells more complex than it looks. I's never say it smells powdery in the worst baby powder notes that a lot of women hate. But bear in mind that musk is very evident in here resulting in soapyness; loads of white musk. Don't let the strong fresh spicy opening deter you; it develops into something herbal and projects impressively at that time. With a chypre feel but not quite. There is one note or it could be an overall combination of them that exudes a vintage flair. The spicyness will mellow out fast in a powdery/soapy nondescript floral drydown leaning on the masculine side. Appropriate for summer and spring. Perfumey, polished, well-mannered. Starck Peau de Soie (2016) - powdery marble - I own a lot of #dominiqueropion perfumes and his style has always been a play on florals and comes in big and dramatic chords. In this perfume, it shows a much sensitive side to Mr. Ropion. If someone would smell this perfume, you could easily mistake for a Dior exclusive or Chanel Les Exclusif. Starts with this Powdery white musk top combined with Pear fruit note. Its drydown is woody, musky and retaining the original powder accord. Is it baby powder? No. How he integrates the accord - it reminded me of smooth marble. Cold, Modern, Industrial. An underrated beauty.

I've had this for barely a day and I'm already getting obsessed with it. This is indeed a rather simple fragrance and it does run the same vein as The Ghost in the Shell from ELDO, though I find this one a lot more tame, classy, and easy to wear. This would be great to wear a spritz of to work as I can't see it really offending anyone as long as it's not over sprayed. Starts off a bit vintage powder-y, and then dries down to a beautifully smooth, powder with a touch of sweetness. EDIT: Yep it's official, I'm obsessed. So soft, powdery, and dare I say sexy? It says "come hither"

A friend said it reminds her of the perfume her Tropical Splash Barbie came with in the 90s. The top notes are powdery, with a spiciness almost like cloves, but when it dries down it's a very floral powder note with a distinctly feminine sour muskiness. On it's own it has a very basic scent, but layered with another fragrance it behaves like a show-stealer.

Sent an EDT sample from FragranceX. I know it says it's for a woman, but I think this could work as unisex. However, I found the opening a cacophonous mess of harsh and sweet chemicals. The colors I got were clashing purple and gold. Genteel powder soon predominated, but the animalic and musk notes were noticeable. I don't think this is a work fragrance unless you either work at a gym or like creating a scene. (To be fair, the sillage wasn't nuclear so if you wear only a little, you might be fine.) I agree with the reviewer who said it's not exactly pretty. The powdery notes are harmonious in late dry down, but with the musky, animalic properties, this is sultry and not really a "safe" daytime scent.

It's a slight tinge of powder on a sterile humanoid creature. It smells like skin rubbed down with astringent and talcum powder so that the musky, living being smell comes out as a whisper through alcohol and bursts of clean that feel as if blasted by a timed air-wick mister. I should've settled on my Ghost in the Shell by Etat

This is totally the wrong category for me. I don’t generally like powdery musky soft whisper scents so I don’t care for this either. I tried it because Mr. Ropion created a couple of my favorites such as Costume National Homme. It smells like what you expect from the ingredients though.

This is terrible! Starts out pleasantly powdery, but dries down to a very cheap, very synthetic men's cologne, á la Bath and Body Works. Heavy sharp green and artificial citrus. A scrubber all the way. Alas, even scrubbing multiple times with baking soda was no match for this synthetic cocktail. It sticks to your skin like superglue on steroids! Definitely not a safe blind buy. The notes are completely inaccurate.

A powder-musk bomb with otherworldly jasmine in its heart, Peau de Soie (which is a type of satin fabric but also translates as “a touch of silk”) reminds me of the musky-powdery perfumes from A Lab on Fire (like Messy Sexy Rolled Out of Bed. without its signature orange vanilla accord) and Alien (if Alien’s volume were modulated and it had powder musks in it)—which makes sense, as Dominique Ropion signed all these perfumes. But Peau de Soie in particular has a few more tricks up its sleeve—it is less linear than the perfumes I just mentioned, and has a bit more intrigue. The opening is all fuzzy powder and Alien musk, and then a fruity jasmine accord appears, first delicate and then more intense, along with a modern neroli that reminds me of Orchid Soleil, growing in intensity until it begins dip under waves of a suede accord that brings the perfume back down into your skin. Sometimes, I think I’m smelling a variation L’Instant de Guerlain; others, a new Narciso Rodriguez. Over time, the jasmine-neroli turns into something kind of peachy, and the later stages of the perfume’s development smell like a modern patchouli chypre dry down—somehow, the spice from patchouli appears (where was it hiding until now?), too. There is a lot going on in here, which makes it fun to wear and analyze, because it transforms into such complex shapes as you wear it. This ends slightly animalic, almost furry, with a fetching raspy quality that tempers its lotiony musks. My bottle is new, and still changing—last time I got powder and more powder and not much else, so I won’t be surprised if it keep developing, and I’ll update if I notice anything else. I would love more dusty patchouli, and I hope that emerges as my bottles settles down. The overall impression has an elusive hide-and-seek quality that reminds me of the first Alaïa perfume—it’s not as ozonic, but the it does the same skin/suede thing. I understand why other reviewers have used deconstruction, ghosts, and other metaphors to try and explain what they’re smelling. Ropion’s best perfumes take you on a journey, as he pulls diversion after diversion out of his hat to extend the early and middle stages of a perfume; where they start might not be where they land, or they at least get to the end point by a more circuitous route than you might first expect. I bought this perfume to augment my collection of powdery bedtime scents (Teint de Neige and such) but it is livelier than I expected from the perfume notes, and more structured. The dry down is sultry powder, but it has no heliotrope or iris. I’m still wearing it to bed, but I’ll probably find more use than I thought. A nice, big bottle of EDT was about 30 bucks with tax, and it looks like it might even be cheaper on some sites. This is well worth it if you like any of the perfumes I mentioned above: it feels like a relative, but it has its own distinct personality. But, yeah—the sprayer kind of sucks. It works, but it doesn’t mist well, and it tends to overspray in a stream. You definitely want a fine and even mist, or the perfume won’t evolve as it should. Another reviewer below says there’s a trick to getting it to work correctly—not really a gripe, but good to know. Did Phillipe Starck really need a perfume line? I guess architecture and perfume make as much sense together as any other two creative disciplines. They were aiming high with these, and they ended up with some very interesting but wearable scents. Really nice work: a genuine Haute Parfum for very little $$$. I’ll be picking up Peau d’Ailliers soon.

I've just come to know three of these Peau de [...] fragrances. Pierre, Soie, & Ailleurs . I'm very pleased with Soie & Pierre - in fact the first thing that came to mind was "Nasomatto" - and that is high praise indeed coming from me! Certainly they have that sheer richness & audacity that makes those Nasomattos so compelling. I've been having a bit of trouble, TBPH, with Ailleurs , as my perception of it was instantly dominated by the aroma of geosmin , with which I am acquainted; and I've 'gotten into a rut' with it of it's seeming to me to be one of those monomolecular fragrances, which I am not a fan of atall-atall - which impression I am hoping to have dispelled when I come to actually wear it. (I don't know any of them yet, other than off-the-blotter.) But this one, and Pierre are just full-on straightforward good fragrances: not exactly pretty , but more the lewd & brazen kind - the wood note (which all three have) is that deep wood , as though of the innermost resins & oils; and the musk dark & naughty to complement it. Update I got a bit carried away saying these are like Nasomattos ... no! they aren't anywhere near Nasomatto-grade! This one is a lovely very musk-dominated fragrance though. A while back I reviewed another musk-heavy fragrance by Tola - Misq Begum - this is a lot like that. A little tip for use of the plunger on these Starck perfume bottles, which I've already said doesn't seem to me to be very stout: press it down as near to the inside edge as possible - avoid pressing-down at the outside edge.

Coriemulvey, your review is completely accurate. Peau de Soie is a “better” version of CK’s Reveal. As soon as I received this, I smelled the resemblance immediately. Reveal is great, don’t get me wrong but in my experience, it can also be way too overbearing. The salt, pepper, and ambergris can turn it volatile and nauseating. PdS smells like everything I enjoy about Reveal but the volume is turned down. I was happy enough to sell Reveal off and stick with this one instead. There truly is no reason to have both in your collection unless you wanted one to wear in the daytime and one for night but that’s still making this fragrance redundant. Something in this has a slight cola sensation lingering within. I love this and I hope as is this macerates that I will get more of that Egyptian musk that you’re describing. It is there but it’s very mellow at this stage.

I had never heard of this line before until I saw it on Saks Off 5th website the other day. I read up on it and took a chance, it sounded lovely! I have not worn it yet, but wanted to quickly comment to say the packaging and presentation are lovely! The box comes with a nice little envelope with three cards inside, a short bio of the artists involved, and I used one of them to test spray. But the bottle!! It's so cool! The photo above does not do it justice. The amorphous design on it is actually a slightly matte-frosted indentation on the back - it's gorgeous, very tactile - much prettier in person. Architectural - fittingly. I haven't even worn it yet but now of course I want the others for the bottle alone. So just wanted to share that - not sure how long it will be available there, but if you're interested check it out!

Seeming at first gossamer, Dominique Ropion's abstract Peau de Soie seems an essay in deconstruction more than any of his other compositions. It starts of quite demure, powdery, almost oblique, but then there is mysterious shade of raw, animalic woods, a duality of alive-clean and dirty-decay, beautifully rendered and perhaps easily misunderstood by the nose that is trying to "make sense" of the fragrance. Over time, it's vaguely violet-like musky "your skin but better" and what seems to be a fractionated patchouli Clearwood that lingers on the skin.

I like it , especially to put it on a spring morning . Really so soft and a bit musky. Powdery aspect is beautiful. Masculine edge is very obvious . It's refreshing, energizing but calming on other hand. Brings me comfort and memories of Sunday morning with a family and my dad used his lovely perfumes. So you wouldn't put it on for a romantic date or for a day when you feel super feminine. Depending on mood it is good for any season and weather I would think. Though musk note is a distinct one so might be too much for a super hot day.

Ok this is an edit of my original review. At first, I loved it. Niche quality. I still love it but the dry down smells just like CK Reveal for women. At least on me it does. Not bad.. it’s cheaper on eBay than Reveal is. I saw that 3 people agreed that is smelled like Reveal while 5 people didn’t. Truly though.. this is very similar. I am smelling them side by side. This smells more animalic and faceted. Peau de Soie definitely smells drier, richer, deeper.. perhaps more expensive. It’s Reveal.. but ten times better.

This is a beautiful fragrance. It starts off very fresh and clean, but morphs into this soft, cozy, clean, powdery and elegant scent. It smells classy and refined. I wouldn’t consider this unisex, it’s very feminine to my nose, but in no way overly floral. I’m not a fan of floral fragrances and I really like this. It’s clean but soft and comforting. Lasting power is great too. Highly recommend.

I keep changing my opinion on this. I love this.. I love all of them. Below I said it smelled like Reveal, but it actually smells more like a spray version of Egyptian musk oil. This brand and the price has been such a treat for me. I collect frags.. Soie and Pierre are in my top 5

I'm doing a side-by-side comparison between this and Roma by Laura Biagiotti, and it's essentially a fluffy Roma. There are some sharper aromatic notes in the top and mid of Roma that are smoother but still present here.

I don't particularly like this perfume on its own but it's very good for layering to complement animalistic, musky powder tones. I like to spritz it with sweet vanilla fragrances, the result is very enjoyable.

I think the person below is describing Peau de Ailleurs... which smells like a wet rock with moss growing on it. Peau de Soie is not green, nor citrus. It’s soft like a wool sweater.
