#120 of My Fragrance Journey - State of Mind French Gallantry: The chivalric garden after dark. It doesn't ease you in. Crushed basil and wet tomato, immediate and sharp - raw, slightly earthy, the kind of botanical that makes you pull back slightly before leaning in again. Like pushing through a wild kitchen garden after heavy rain, everything is alive and a little feral. For a moment, it's genuinely a lot. Green and aggressive and not particularly concerned with whether you're ready. Then something shifts. Dark Kenyan black tea comes through - dry, smoky, mineral - and the whole thing changes character without losing its edge. The bitterness doesn't disappear so much as find somewhere to go. And that's where it gets interesting. Because French Gallantry doesn't pick a lane. It moves between cultivated and instinctive, never fully committing to either, and that refusal to settle is exactly what makes it worth paying attention to. The herbal middle is where it really opens up. Sage, thyme, oregano, laurel - not blended into abstraction but present in a way that feels almost uncurated, like warm air drifting across sun-baked stone. There's a body-awareness to it that's hard to explain without sounding pretentious about it. Warm skin under linen. Salt at the collarbone. The faint trace of someone who's been moving. It wears masculine without being rigid about it - confident enough to carry softness underneath. Heliotrope, amber, dark woods eventually - a smooth almond warmth with smoke and something leather-adjacent moving through it. The shift from that sharp herbal opening into this feels like dusk arriving without announcing itself. You don't notice it happening until it's already there. Worth being honest about, though - it's not seamless. The opening will lose some people, and there's a moment mid-wear where the green notes thin before the warmth fully fills the space. A slight gap. You feel it. Whether that reads as a flaw or just the fragrance being alive probably depends on what you came for. I think it's the latter. It feels unpredictable because it is. And that's the point. Vibe: Torn basil leaves, dry herbs, sun-baked clay, leather left on warm stone. Performance: Projects with restraint, settles close and intentional - present without demanding anything. Fit: Wear it when the evening starts casually and ends somewhere you didn't plan for. French Gallantry to me is something very unique and very bourgeois. Although it is linear, it’s scent transports me to a time where I have not been born yet. Imagine a jazz band, art deco buildings, drapes of heavy curtains, women in flappers, people dancing the Charleston. To me this is how the roaring twenties would smell like. For me, French Gallantry is a time machine. It’s aromatic, green, herb-y, a little woody, a little ambery, a little leathery, a little smoky and whole lot of goodness! It smells very carefree. Very liberating. Very brave and vigorous. I absolutely love it. I got 9+ hours on my skin but I wouldn’t mind over spraying this 😆. Projection at an arm’s length. But beautiful sillage leaving trails everywhere for the first couple of hours.

French Gallantry by State of Mind is a beautifully crafted aromatic herbal fragrance that delivers a bold yet refined experience. It opens with a striking mix of basil, sage, oregano, and thyme, creating a green, almost culinary-like freshness. However, these herbal notes are well-balanced and soften as the scent settles. Tea leaves play a significant role in the opening, adding an elegant depth. As it dries down, a smooth blend of leather and amber takes over, providing a rich and sophisticated base that grounds the fragrance beautifully. I am a fan of this perfume house and at first I did not pay attention to this fragrance, but it was a mistake. The combination of such an interesting ingredients caught my attention and I was amazed how wonderful this fragrance shows my mature but still risky character.Besides, I love the base of black Kenya tea. Me and my husband both use it and it opens up on us very differently.

Not sure how i feel about this one. At first it reads more masculine. The animalic notes stand out to me for sure. I will say there is something intriguing about this one. Maybe all the herbs? Maybe the tomato leaf. I am guessing the latter. The herbs are what drew me to it and made me want to try this one first. I am going to wait for further impressions before I continue my review of it. Looking forward to Act II.

Surprisingly similar to my longest signature scent Gucci Pour Homme II, but enough of its own thing. Primary notes of warm leather, amber, black tea, spicy pink peppercorns, and a bit more powder/smoke. More formal and less sweet and balanced - reducing its energy. Also, not as much strength and projection, but not terrible. Gucci Pour Homme II is bigger and more inspiring/addictive, but this is a fine alternative.

Drinking milky tea in an herb garden that also contains heliotrope. Starts more herbal, but the heliotrope and floral notes become more apparent as it dries down. I find that tomato leaf tends to dominate scents - but here it just lends a beautiful complexity and amplifies the "garden" vibe. An interesting and wearable piece of perfumery. I enjoyed draining the sample.

Smoke and cardamon. Might be other fragrant herbs, but the herbal aspect resembles cardamon to my nose. Coca-cola vibe glimmers within. Cigarette smoke turns it dry. Too masculine for me to like.

Testing this blind, this one also tricked my senses. Upon first opening I thought I got a slightly spicy rose that mellowed quite quickly to a musky cloud. Didn't seem to have much character after 30-40 minutes and I waived it off a some kind of flower musk mix, with a bit more maturity but not really wow at all. Looking at the notes now, I'm quite surprised. So yes, most of the herbs and even tomato leaf can be found in the mix but the result to me is less aromatic and more walking into the garden where floral and herbs mix. You can pull them out individually, except maybe the black tea, which doesn't seem present at all. Like another fragrance from this house it feels caught between two words, yet not quite carving out its own identify. Interesting but only after knowing the notes. On the eh side of neutral about it.

I don't know how to feel about this fragrance. Who'd want to smell like a tomato.

French Gallantry is gorgeous fragrance. I would call it gourmand, but no one has mentioned that it has creamy, milky undertone that comes around you like most lovely hug. Fresh milky herbal note, where thyme and origano are most prominent. Followed by beautiful leathery and flowery notes from heliotrope enhance complex gourmand notes. I also smell vetiver but was not mentioned. I cant smell tomato leaves and animalic notes. Beautifully blended, strong and complex fragrance but still fresh, even for people who love fresh perfumes but a bit of niche kick to it. On a pricy side but worth a price tag if you would love to smell unique, fresh or seductive, depends how strong you are on a trigger.

Picked up French Gallantry by State of Mind this month. It's my Spring signature. 👐Nothing smells like it. Can't stop spinning he loose magnetic cap! We're in the category of "gourmand fougère". For men I'll always say wear more herbs, less rose. You don't wear grandma's inherited jewelry, you sell it. 9/10 for uniqueness, presentation design, tea product synergy, and effort in classic French perfumery. I just wish the blend of musks with the oregano and tomato leaf would give me spicy meatballs from that fine half Italian chick's house down the block on Saturday night vibes I was searching for, but if one applies this on his mountain oysters one may achieve desired outcomes.
