It smells like soft licorice rather than candy, more aromatic and warm than sugary. There is a gentle bite to it, a lightly tingling spice that gives the opening energy without ever becoming sharp or medicinal. The coriander follows as a dry, aromatic, and gently spicy accord rather than anything sharp or peppery. It has a subtle citrus-like freshness to it, but without the brightness of actual citrus, giving it a clean, airy quality, accompanied by a soft herbal warmth in the background that keeps it from feeling green or vegetal. Next, the whiskey opens warm and boozy, immediately giving off the impression of aged spirits rather than raw alcohol. It carries a smooth sweetness, with hints of caramel and oak, and a faint smokiness that adds depth without turning heavy. There is no harsh bite here, just a rounded, slightly syrupy warmth that feels comforting and indulgent. Lastly, the mandarin steps in as soft and sweet rather than sharp or sparkling. It smells like ripe mandarin flesh, slightly juicy but more mellow than bright citrus. There is a gentle, sunny sweetness to it that feels smooth and rounded, without the tart bite you would get from lemon or bergamot. It's worth noting that the opening doesn't last very long, and starts transitioning into the dry down after about 30 minutes to an hour after spraying. Dry Down: The dry down is sweet, woody, and balsamic. The primary notes I get are vanilla, benzoin, styrax, and white cedar extract, with vanilla and benzoin as the most prominent. Vanilla becomes the dominant force with a smooth, sweet, and creamy dessert-like character that feels rich without becoming heavy. Benzoin follows closely with a resinous sweetness that feels balsamic and ambery, echoing vanilla while adding a deeper, more glowing warmth. Together, they create a soft, enveloping sweetness that feels cozy and indulgent rather than sharp or sugary. Styrax then continues that balsamic tone but introduces a smoky, incense-like edge that adds depth and keeps the sweetness from feeling flat. It gives the dry down a slightly mysterious, almost smoldering quality that contrasts nicely with the creamy vanilla. Lastly, the white cedar extract finishes the dry down with a clean, dry woodiness that feels light and polished rather than sharp or dusty like typical cedar. It adds structure and clarity, preventing the base from becoming too soft or syrupy. I also pick up faint hints of cacao, though it is never quite in focus, more like a gourmand shadow behind the sweetness. Overall, the dry down feels very different from the opening, shifting from spice and booze into warmth, sweetness, woods, and resins. Performance: In the first hour, projection is strong, reaching out several feet with ease. Sillage is also bold, leaving a heavy, noticeable trail. After three to four hours, projection remains largely unchanged, while the scent trail softens slightly but is still easy to detect. Around the seven to eight hour mark, projection drops to a more moderate radius of about 3-4 feet, and the trail becomes lighter, though still present. It finally settles close to the skin around the ten to eleven hour point. Overall, performance is strong and long lasting, mirroring exactly what I experienced with God of Fire that I reviewed yesterday. When to Wear: Sand Dance is firmly a fall and winter fragrance, thriving in cooler air where its warmth and sweetness can fully bloom. It works beautifully during the daytime for relaxed outings, coffee runs, or casual plans where you still want to smell elevated and intentional. In the evening, it becomes even more convincing, especially for date nights, dinners, or intimate social settings where its cozy, seductive character can really shine. There is something inviting about the way it wears, making it feel personal and close rather than loud or aggressive. That richness, however, also sets clear limits. It is not a fragrance that suits formal environments, where a more restrained or polished profile is usually expected. It is also a poor choice for office wear, as its sweetness and depth would likely feel heavy and distracting in close quarters. Sand Dance is at its best when worn for enjoyment rather than obligation, in moments where warmth, comfort, and a touch of sensuality make sense. Blind Buy: Sand Dance is not a safe blind buy. The price alone makes it a risky purchase without testing, but the scent profile adds another layer of caution. It opens spicy and boozy, then transforms into a sweet, resinous, vanilla heavy dry down, which means you are really getting two very different experiences in one fragrance. If you only enjoy one of those styles, the other half may not work for you at all. It is also a fragrance that leans rich and cozy rather than clean or fresh, which further narrows its audience. People who prefer bright citruses, aquatics, or minimal woods may find this too dense or indulgent. Because of all that, sampling is essential. Wearing it on skin and living with both stages is the only real way to know if it deserves a place in your collection. Final Verdict: Sand Dance ended up being just as pleasant of a surprise as God of Fire. It opens warm and spicy with boozy whiskey giving it immediate character, then slowly settles into a rich, decadent vanilla centered dry down layered with woods and resins. The contrast between the opening and the dry down is dramatic, almost like two different moods in one fragrance, yet both stages are genuinely enjoyable in their own way. I personally connected more with the dry down, as its sweet, resinous warmth sits closer to my usual taste, but the opening still plays an important role in making the overall journey interesting rather than predictable. The quality throughout is easy to pick up on, from the smoothness of the whiskey to the creamy depth and glowing warmth of the vanilla and resins. It feels intentional and well composed, not like a collection of ideas thrown together. Performance also backs up its presence, giving it the kind of strength and longevity that makes it feel worth wearing on days or nights when you want to smell memorable. Taken as a whole, Sand Dance feels like another confident release from Stéphane Humbert Lucas, one that shows range within the house’s style. It is not something I would reach for every day, but it is exactly the kind of fragrance I want in my collection for cooler weather, slower evenings, and moments when I want something warm, indulgent, and a little bit captivating. Interesting scent. It really does give the feeling of the color brown like the bottle and ingredients. I bought this blind because I found the idea of a desert landscape in tandem whiskey and cacao a lofty and compelling idea, and I wanted to see how the perfumer approached this idea. SHL accomplished his vision by having both in unison, with the top and mid of booze (without feeling like a liquor focused scent) and a heavier dose of cacao on a bed of vetiver, patchouli, vanilla and smooth woods. Typically, sand is represented with immortelle but it's possible that combination may have clashed. I personally would have chosen to include dates (fruit) and perhaps palm leaf to represent the desert, but this is his art, not mine. I'm picky about cacao but it's used well here and smells like good quality. A fun fragrance that I think will appeal to folks into artistic side of fragrances (me)and casual fans that just want something that smells good around their friends and family. However, I generally don't wear gourmand type scents very often so I'll probably sell it. Can be worn casual or formal, preferably in cool/cold temps. -------------------------------------------------------- Overall a fun and well made fragrance. It doesn't smell like anything else in perfumery so points for originality. I'd say it's sort of the same vibe, but not the same smell as Kilian Black Phantom, if that makes sense. High time I give out a few words for this gem. Needless to say, I love it. My skin chemistry is incredibly acidic so florals often to complete messes (shame because I love them at times) but somehow, gourmands work wonders on me. A friend of mine was actually commenting earlier: "on anyone else I'd think this is annoying but you make it work somehow". Admittedly, and I've said it before, I'm not the alpha male type. Leather heavy, overly masculine chypres or fougeres are often wasted on me. Not that my skin messes them up, it's just that I don't look credible wearing them. So oftentimes, you'll find me wearing something either gourmands or incense/oud heavy Middle-Eastern fragrances. Sand Dance falls into the former, albeit with a tinge of a desert vibe, hence the name, referring to the infamous sidewinder snake it represents. Sand Dance opens with a beautiful blast of chocolate and whiskey before sweet vanillic benzoin shows up. The drydown on my skin is resinous and warm, powered by chocolatey patchouli and resinoids with creamy sandalwood rounding it up. Definitely a fall/winter scent, ideally on nights out. The longevity is fantastic, well over 8-10 hours on me, with the first 3-4 hours pushing out quite a bit within arms length. It is a beast of its own, but those who like Killian's Black Phantom might find much to enjoy here, not so much in the similarity of the scent but rather, in the general vibe, seasons and situations they're suitable in.

My thoughts upon initial spray, without looking at accords or pyramid: Definitely smelled this before. Sweet, amber fragrance. Slightly boozy in the opening. Mildly reminds me of Black Phantom as it dries. And Black Phantom is starting to overpower in the air. And then it kind-of goes away again. But I still think it's a derivative/play on Black Phantom. More ambery in the open, and I think it's more woody than it is gourmand in the drydown. After pyramid and accords: woody, warm spicy, amber, cacao. I was getting chocolatey facets, but wasn't 100% sure of it. I think it's fair to say this dries as chocolatey wood. Warm spices effectively fade off the top within 10 minutes, and you are left with sweetened woods. In the drydown, the best comparison to this profile is Xerjoff's Amber Star. That whiskey accord that I see other commenters referring to - it actually isn't strong enough to the point where I'd say whiskey is a prominent accord, just like how the rum in Black Phantom isn't a prominent accord. Longevity around 10 hours, sillage was strong for a couple hours (but will be moderate mostly), value on this entire house is meh - if you love something, buy it; otherwise you can get better value elsewhere. Profile... either unisex or slightly leaning masculine.

On my first impressions of Sand Dance I was very impressed, honestly speaking the notes of this fragrance are not usually my taste but I wanted to try all of the new 'la serpent' collection, specifically I usually don't care much for the note of whiskey, however I think in this fragrance its excellent. So yeah if you're actually a fan of that note in fragrances this is an obvious must try. The opening needs a little time to settle but once it does its a superb blend of whiskey and cacao and it gives it this sort of semi-gourmand feel and after some time the vanilla shows up giving it a smooth almost creamy vibe underneath the whiskey. This fragrance is very sexy and honestly deserves a lot more attention from the community. I could see this being a compliment-beast in colder weather. Love it. Edit since owning a full bottle: This is indeed a compliment beast, it has excellent projection and longevity.. the bottle also opens smoothly whereas my sample didn't in the opening so this makes it even more lovely to my nose. Would I buy: Own a full bottle Recommended: Absolutely, here before the hype train - but if it doesn't get hyped its an hidden gem.

This was a blind buy for me. It’s rare that something catches me off guard as to how unique it is. This is one of those fragrances that just makes you feel warm and cozy. It opens up with this excellent boozy warm spicy accord. Not too far after the open, you get introduced to this insanely realistic chocolate note. No, I’m not talking sugary Hershey’s bar type of chocolate. I’m talking a dry, realistic type of chocolate. It hides in the back and adds just the right amount of nuance. On dry down, it develops into this really gorgeous warm vanilla that lingers until it becomes a skin scent. Pretty good longevity and it was projecting pretty hard the first few hours with 4 sprays. I feel like this is a pretty strong unisex fragrance. My only gripe about SHL so far is how the caps aren’t metal. I’m paying in the $200 range for a 50ml, so I’d expect a quality metal cap.

This stuff is awesome. Words rarely do fragrances justice, but let me try to make some debatably useful comparisons: Givenchy Gentleman Reserve Privee (or Boisée, even?) bumps into Kilian Black Phantom. They go for a long walk through the desert as the sun sets, where they just barely see Nasomatto Baraonda off in the distance waving to them. Maison Margiela's (quite sadly discontinued) Across Sands wanders lost in the same desert, knowing he's vaguely there in spirit even if not in person. Tiziana Terenzi Al Contrario finally brings everyone back together as night falls, where they video call and reconnect with their long-lost friend, Bentley for Men Intense. The sand breaks into spontaneous interpretive dance, somehow giving birth to this bottle in the process. Did I mention that it's really good?

Very impressed. This one isn’t linear at all. The whiskey is at the forefront on initial spray then after a couple minutes the cacao, Tonka, and slight citrus, to uplift, shine mostly. Very grown up gourmand. I feel this is like walking past someone who just drank dark chocolate coffee and you just get a whiff of that deep bitter dusty chocolate from them (no actual coffee note) and the outside breeze is the orange. I don’t get actual distinguished citrus notes just makes the cacao a touch brighter than I’ve smelled in other frags that went more milk chocolate and sticky sweet. Maybe best on men bc of the usual appeal to more bitter notes but I’m definitely wearing this once the Cooler weather comes!!

As usual, I love gourmand scents. Stumbled upon this on another random fragrance content creator review. I ordered a sample, but was already sure I was going to love it by the notes listed. It was instant love and proceeded to purchase a full bottle. A very mature, grown, boozy and spicy chocolate scent. Decadent, although may be cloying to some people because as full-bodied as it is, it's still fairly sweet. Performance-wise, it nearly matches up but it's not nearly as great as the other kings & queens of gourmand scents (e.g Angel's Share or Black Phantom. Maybe 10% under those) but still performs well even where I'm from, where it's summer and humid all year round. 10/10 fragrance.

Haven’t written a review in a while but had to jump back on for this after having it for a few months and yes I LOVE IT! I’ve had it on my Wishlist for a while and bit the bullet on a shopping spree and I’m so happy I got it. Now it obviously has that warm melted chocolate smell and feeling but also other notes that compliment and bring other sides to the main note. It lasts a good while, will be on my clothes for a few days haha and projection is about an arms length. Not super beast mode but I’m happy with it. As per my name I love gourmands so obvs had to have this and very excited for the winter months to come so I can enjoy this even more!

This thing is powerful and overtakes any other fragrance. It opens on an earthy bitter cacao and whisky. It's an actually well done masculine gourmand. However as it dries down it gets sweeter as the vanilla comes through and a little less masculine. The projection is a lot more vanilla forward than the skin scent. It's a projection beast. It was an immediate love. I fear me and Stephane Humbert Lucas are in it for live. I'd recommend this for both men and women who love cacao& whisky and something to warm them up during the cold winter.

This is a rich, boozy gourmand done right! It opens with a smooth whisky-cream combo, balanced by a touch of citrus and spice. After about 20 minutes, the cacao and sandalwood kick in, making it velvety and warm. As it dries down, the sweetness from tonka and vanilla blends with benzoin and patchouli, adding depth without being too heavy. It’s cozy, slightly smoky, and just the right amount of sweet—perfect for cooler weather or a night out. If you love boozy cacao scents with a refined touch, this one’s worth trying.

The opening and mid of this scent are stunning. I was like wow. And im always waiting to find a scent that will wow me. This collection does it for me. But this one is bomb. I smell a juicy mandarin zest and yummy hyper real cacao, most amazing chocolate in the opening. The drydown is more similar to grand soir, woody vanilla scent. The combination of cacao and cashmeran do add a unique dna. Very rich and yummy. It a love for me!

So. That fragrance is on another lane . Really mature unlike any other of this house. Sophisticated whiskey and cacao notes are dominant throughout its lifespan. Drying down vanilla and tonka kick in making it somewhat ambery . Longevity is mid on me . Projection below average . Just overspray it . It’s worth every penny. Different than all these tiktok angel shares and black phantoms hyped up boogie gourmands . 9/10

Sand Dance Stéphane Humbert Lucas – 9/10 Another masterpiece. I’m kind of sad the performance on my skin isn’t great, but the scent itself is amazing. It smells exactly like the color of the bottle. Hard to explain, but it gives the feeling of an Egyptian palace just super clean and smooth, not incense based. It’s different and really beautiful. I can’t recommend it enough.

Oh this is niiiceeee!!! I was in harrods and went to the SHL booth to smell GOF when the name of this caught my eye. This is such a beautiful blend of creamy, sweet & woody notes. At first the whiskey is potent and as it drys the chocolatey tonka goodness starts peaking but the cashmere ties it all together making it extra creamy and well blended!! 10/10

Pure yumminess! It smells like a rich chocolate sponge cake with dulce de leche cream, because I can feel both caramel and milky notes. It also has a nice amount of spiciness that makes gourmand notes in this fragrance smell more sophisticated. And of course beautiful dark (and slightly dry) boozy base with strong patchouli. A really nice gourmand and it's actually quite unique. This is sweet, spicy, warm and a boozy scent! I smell whiskey with toffifee caramel candies,smells delicious. The name is perfect and the color of the bottle fits perfectly the smell, it does indeed smell brown. Perfect for the cold weather leaning more of a night time wear. Love it.

This is my favorite fragrance at the moment. the scent seriously has a sandy texture like a fine grainy feel to it and i get a very refined not at all cloying cacao with alot of warm spices and an almost aromatic vibe going on underneath. gets much sweeter in the drydown and finishes with an overall caramel-like smell

Sand Dance is my favorite fragrance from SHL. Whiskey, cacao, sandalwood, vanilla... what’s not to love? There’s some sweetness but it doesn’t enter edible gourmand territory, which I appreciate. This is a regal and exotic juice, I feel transported to a place other-worldly when I wear this.

just bought this and i love it so much. it’s extremely classy but also cozy and comforting at the same time. the whiskey note is prominent but not overpowering at all. the chocolate is smooth and not overly sweet. definitely one of the most mature gourmands on the market.

Quite comparable to Reserve Privée, but with a beautifully blended smooth chocolate. Even better. Instantly became one of my favorite perfumes. Long longevity, projects for around 5 hours. Can still smell it faintly after 25 hours and even a shower. Beautiful bottle.

Very warm, cacao gourmand fragrance! I wish SHL fragrances carry in 100ml bottles but this fragrance is so so good, one of the best gourmands. $210+ fragrance for only 50ml is pretty steep, but if you are into gourmand/cacao fragrances then this is it.

I'm surprised nobody else has made the resemblance to Armani Prive myrrh imperiale. Almost identical on my skin. Man this is a gem... really wish it lasted longer but don't sleep on this one.

Opening you can really smell the orange which is a tad bit off putting, but they dry down on me I can really smell the spiciness, whiskey, and chocolate sweetness. It is an incredible scent.

Coziness in a small bottle. On my skin it feels like pralines and caramel. A bit of whiskey here and there. Very little cacao. Warm and lovely. 10/10 for SHL.

This is amazing for date night

This does make me think of sand for some reason. I've tried four fragrances from SHL so far and this one is my favorite by some margin. Sand Dance is a sweet and powdery cacao and sandalwood scent with a slight orange fruitiness and a touch of soft spices. The scent's powderiness and overall silky texture does evoke the image of sand, or at least it does to me. To be completely honest I didn't get much booziness out of this at all but I don't mind it too much. I tried Vulcan Sable briefly a few months ago and that was pretty boozy from what I remember but I'd have to try it again. In some ways this reminds me a bit of both Japanese Whiskey from d'Annam and Xenial from Navitus Parfums but Japanese Whiskey leans strongly into the realistic whiskey scent and Xenial is a mess of a fragrance. Sand Dance is also what I'd call an "easy gourmand", which is a fragrance that's clearly a gourmand but it doesn't lean into replicating a specific food too much or too realistically, which also makes it easier to use as it's a more versatile scent profile. Overall I like this but I think it's overpriced, even at discounter prices. Performance is mostly why I think Sand Dance is overpriced. Moderate projection with a moderate sillage that you won't be smelling for too long as this becomes a skin scent after about 2-3 hours. Not that great when you're spending around $180 for a 50 ml bottle. Longevity is good on the other hand, reaching 8 hours but already a bit faint.

What a pleasant surprise. Firstly, it's rare that a sweeter/gourmand type fragrance works on me as you may tell by the frags in my collection so I was expecting nothing other than yet another nice but soft frag with below par performance. When I tried it on hand a few weeks ago, I thought the scent profile was wonderful but dismissed it as probably being too light. Upon wearing it one evening, I was enveloped by a cloud of beautiful, sandy, chocolate goodness. Yeah, the name actually fits to perfection because I don't know how they did it, but it does actually have a sandy/grainy texture but with gorgeous chocolate. Let me state, I have NEVER found a chocolate scent that actually smells realistic, lasts ages or performs well...until now. I woke up the next day & to my surprise, could still smell this thing around me. This is not normal for a gourmand on my skin. What a wonderful creation! How this thing doesn't have more hype is beyond me. This is the best chocolate scent I have ever laid my nose on and annihilates others like Double attack & Black phantom. This has to go in my collection. A chocolate scent that works? I'm stunned. Everything about it screams quality, the bottle, the name, the vibe and the performance seems to be pretty decent as well. Bravo Stephane, you made the best chocolate scent on the market, what a wonderful surprise!

When I first sprayed tested "Sand Dance | Stéphane Humbert Lucas" on a small area of my arm I could detect the chocolate and thought I loved it, but couldn’t work out what else I was smelling. On wearing it all over, I really smell the chocolate mixed in equal parts with the anise and cedar notes. This gives it an almost spicy, perfumy smelling chocolate scent and makes this feel like I smell of a spice shop. It’s nice but verging on nauseating as it’s very strong. It actually reminds me of "Vanille des Rois | Fomowa" and "Absolute Aphrodisiac | Initio". For me "Sand Dance | Stéphane Humbert Lucas" isn’t as chocolate forward as I’d hoped, although it’s extremely long lasting. If you enjoy the mix of notes it’s well worth the money for the beast mode performance. I’d still say it’s a good 7.5-8/10. I have "Vanille Havane (Eau de Parfum) | Les Indémodables" which is a delicious boozy chocolate scent and I find much more enjoyable than this one. It’s unlikely I’ll buy Sand Dance but I’m still enjoying it for now.

This fragrance is something that radiates happiness and warmth in every aspect! The essential member of a group of friends: fun, makes everyone laugh, supports you when you are down, always welcoming and enthusiastic, this friend is Sand Dance. It opens with a boozy chocolate. Not one of those cheap whiskey chocolates, more like a quality rum-filled milk chocolate. In the middle, the fragrance takes on a slightly woody texture and begins to deepen. The initial cheerful mood settles a bit, and in the meantime, sesame and styrax begin to be noticeable. Benzoin is always in this cycle. I think vanilla, sandalwood and cashmere are the last ones left. They are the ones that give it its comfortable aura. Peaceful, happy, soft and yummy. Is it like a desert dancer, I don't think so. Is it a comforting and easy-going companion, yes. True unisex. The performance could be a bit better.

Sand Dance was supposed to be my signature scent; I absolutely love everything about it. It smells 10/10 on paper and on my clothes, it lasts for a whole day, and it just has that amazing smooth and warming scent of cocoa/chocolate. But unfortunately, it just doesn’t go well with my skin chemistry. Approximately around 20 minutes since it has been applied on my skin, it transforms into a very dry, strong sesame and harsh amber like scent with some strong incense notes as well. It is turning into a completely different scent than it is supposed to smell like, so I guess I am just unlucky and that Sand Dance is just not meant for me. What a bummer.

Even though this one was my top 3 in the new collection, it struggles to find a defining character. It's "kinda this & kinda that" and is lacking either as a gourmand or Oriental, hence the review by @Kaylovely, but give it a chance on the skin and a couple of hours, you'll discover the authentic smell of sandalwood @C-Sauce mentions—it's a smell hard to replicate with lower quality synthetics! This is now my favorite of the 6 because my original #1 Crying of Evil doesn't have much of a drydown..

This one is a woodier version of Jeu de Peau. The sandalwood is a little dustier, and the milk is more caramelized. It resembles toffee or dulce de leche whereas JDP is more of a saccharine milk. This dries down into suave santal. Beautifully done. I give this a thumbs up; however, it is not particularly original. I’m still waiting for more of the SHL that blew me away: Black Gemstone, Mortal Skin, Wish Come True, Generation 2022, O Hira.

The dry down is where it's at. The opening was offputting, strong coffee/cacao/rum/herbal. The drydown becomes sweet ambery vanilla with slight hints of the opening notes. Reminds me of Initio's Absolute Aphrodisicac without the weird castoreum note. This is way better the Initio AA. Longevity on this one though is not great.

Hypnotic spicy vanilla. There is a high percentage of iso e super/ambroxan/synthetics which normally turns me off. However it works here. This is not groundbreaking, just a comfortable easy wear for any occasion. There is an undercurrent of sensuality which is lovely. Unisex. Big sillage and lasts all day.

I enjoyed this - caramel, warm, ambery, woody. Fragrances present boozy on my skin, but the whiskey isn't overwhelming here. I would love to have this in my rotation if it were significantly cheaper. Not interesting enough to justify the price to me.

A chocolatey sandalwood. Sand Dance is creamy, sweet, and gourmand. I get a tiny bit of the booze but not much. It adds a hint. Well done sweet one, I really think most will like it. Smooth and comfy. This is a good one. 8.2/10

Best and highest quality smelling one from the entire line. It’s very smooth, alluring, not sure I need a full bottle but if you’re into sweet boozy fragrances with an enveloping cozy warmth, you’ll like this one.
