Dead of Night

I have wanted to try Strangelove perfumes for years, being intrigued by their promises of small batches and high-quality, ethically-sourced ingredients. For these reasons, their perfumes are eye-wateringly expensive. They are all oud-centred, with the focus being on quality and authenticity (or so I believe). I bought the discovery set recently, also expensive, but my curiosity overruled the price. Dead of Night is my first one to try. It is a rose-oud scent, bold in performance and reminiscent of classic Middle Eastern perfumery in style. Oud-centric from initial spray, it is animalic, pungent and strong - featuring a challenging, "true oud" note. I used to hate oud, but on being "educated" on perfume over the years, I have come to admire it. It mellows as it unfolds, and smells undeniably regal and expensive. It is rich and full-bodied throughout, with what I can only describe as a "fattiness" of sorts. DON opens with the aforementioned dark, slightly faecal oud, dirty and leathery up top. It is certainly a challenging oud - but smells like the real deal. The floral notes emerge after some time, muted and subtle alongside the intense oud. Some green-tinged violet is evident initially, adding freshness to the animalic oud. Powdery rose follows, quickly becoming the main floral note, and creating a lovely example of the classic rose-oud accord. The jasmine is slightly indolic initially, mellowing alongside the oud. It becomes a beautifully-balanced floral-oud scent, with the oud softening beautifully to form a smooth, woody complement to the florals. The creamy white florals come to the fore during the later stages, their sweetness enhanced to perfection by smooth, dry vanilla. It gives a seamless sweet amber edge to the oud, adding depth. It becomes increasingly dry as it dries down, with a smokiness coming to the fore. It never becomes thin or harsh, however. A lovely sandalwood note enhances the woodiness of the oud, reminiscent of Cartier Oud & Santal, a simple and beautiful composition I love. It becomes musky as it fades, a woody-amber scent until final fade. Sillage is moderate and longevity is long-lasting. Best worn as an autumn/winter evening scent. It is unisex. A beautiful composition made with oud of the highest quality, DON smells expensive and is hard to fault. I'm excited to try my other Strangelove samples. Opulent elegance in a bottle. 4.5/5.

Campfire in the desert night 🔥🏜️ For anyone enjoying fragrance like FdB Sahraa this reading is something to consider. I'm starting this writing with it as a reference since it's the more popular one. Sahraa is known for the opulence in the floral oud category. I find it very beautiful because it has lots of spiciness that manage to balance out the animalic funky oud extremely well. All the notes are working in harmony right from the beginning till the end. It's an oriental floral oud fragrance that stand out amongst others. But with all that greatness being said, wearing Sahraa multiple times in a row can be tiresome for the olfactory. Although it is an amazing fragrance, when there is strong sharpness in the profile it can be a downside for its wearability (I'm guessing it's from the big dose of saffron here). So I'm content and happy to own the atomizer of Sahraa to wear occasionally as a layering in the cold weather scenario. deadofnight from the house of strangelove nyc has the similar profile with the fragrance I mentioned above. It has very pungent, bold and strong animalic presence from the Borneo oud. An ultimate joy to wear for a fragrance connoisseur who loves the addictive nature of funky oud. What makes this fragrance a better one for me is the smoothness in delivering all the notes thus it feels easy and effortless to wear. The floral notes consist of violet, rose, jasmine and tuberose come together cohesively dancing around the oud as the main star. As it develops the texture become creamier provided by vanilla, bourbon vanilla and sandalwood. Resinous amber with light touch of smokey incense and musk add extra layer of warmth to the overall compositions. All the notes play important role in harmonic orchestra for the oud to shines in center stage. Wearing this fragrance transport me to a campfire in cold desert night with an intimate romantic settings. A very high end luxurious fragrance I'm always excited to wear in the colder months. Seductive, skanky, salacious, big, bold, and brash, Dead of Night delivers everything I want in an oud fragrance. In forgoing the niceties of oud-centric fragrances tamed for the western market that seem to dominate the genre, Laudamiel pushes boundaries in an exploration of natural oud that is both unique and exciting. Dead of Night opens unquestionably animalic as natural oud sustainably sourced shines through as it takes centre stage. The oud is pungent, noticeably musky with a slightly fermented sour edge accented by a hint of natural sweetness. A fleeting burst of bergamot highlights the sour qualities of the oud, while violet leaf adds a barely perceptible touch of watery greenness. As the fragrance evolves, the oud’s animalic bite is encumbered by floral sweetness as a beautifully blousy Damask Rose joins the oud in a combination made in olfactive heaven. Moving into the dry-down, vanillic sweetness is met with the milkiness of sandalwood and the warmth of amber to really round out the oud as the fermented piquancy is reduced to a muted whisper. Dead of Night is much more than three distinct phases. It’s a deeply complex composition whose wear is marked by subtle and highly nuanced developments that I am completely fascinated by. Absolute quality coupled with masterful skill separates a causal niche fragrance from what Laudamiel has done here for Strangelove. Free from imperfection or any possible criticism, Dead of Night is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. In wearing Dead of Night, I am reminded of Frederic Malle’s The Night, a fragrance that for me has always epitomised the genre as it has firmly sat at the apex of oud fragrances. Notwithstanding the similarities, they are two separate and distinguishable fragrances that run in parallel and both verge on perfection. I love this juice. It took me completely by surprise when I was visiting Amsterdam searching complete different types of scents. When the sales assistant sprayed this over my hand I was blown away... This is Oud, 3 types of Ouds (regarding who finally made me take one of these bottles home) Borneo, Cambodia and Thailand. It has also a touch of roses, and all lays on a bed of Mysore Sandal wood... Yes, this combo has been million of times repeated, but this is one of the best in my honest opinion. This is sexi, with the perfect touch of skankiness, but within the limits, with the rose not taken over and the creamy refined sandalwood at the back, making this perfume a wonderful, elegant but naughty type of scent. The price-tag, in the other hand, it's ridiculously high, so just recommended if it touches your heart, so try before buying. There are now 15ml bottles, without the golden cup, that makes this somehow more affordable, but still in the very end of high-priced niche perfumery. Originality: Low-medium Scent: 10/10 Performance: Beast Would I buy it: Yes, but I would start with the 15ml bottle (already in my collection)

Dead of Night is a gorgeously regal and sophisticated yet dark and animalic oud fragrance. Straight away I notice the sweet metallic tang of violet leaf, which contrasts beautifully with soft rose, jasmine and tuberose. The florals in here are not overpowering at all - the rose doesn’t come across jammy and the white florals don’t come across like thick soap, they’re perfectly balanced. In the base, a dark and brooding, smoky oud takes the stage supported by a touch of sweetness from a subtle vanillic amber. I would argue this is actually one of the safer options from Strangelove. This isn’t an unusual array of notes and it’s not particularly challenging, but nonetheless the high quality of ingredients and masterful perfumery is obvious. This is a fantastic fragrance and even though I’d still choose Fall into Stars over this, I definitely want a bottle of Dead of Night.

This perfume is simply glorious! I usually run away from anything that begins with this much oud but it settles down quickly in like 5-10 minutes and the violet leaf and floral notes start coming out as the oud settles down and combined with the bergamot it has a fresh and almost tea-like aspect for a brief period. There is this darkness combined with a light airy feel about it, like a contrast of weight. The name makes it sound like it’s going to be this dark, heavy number but it really isn’t once you get past the opening. It’s much lighter in feel than I expected and there is a crispness that gives a nice contrast to the oud and the overall vibe of this fragrance is so satisfying. I never expected to like it as much as I do. Just don’t run from these heavy oud beginnings because they often settle down quickly and turn onto something you can’t stop sniffing.

Good to know that it ́s not just me that finds the performance to be poor :) New niche perfume enthusiast here (and even newer to true oud oil perfumes), who has just bought Strangelove sample kit, who has found that almost every one of the kit has that bad opening and who has just done some reading: it ́s just the oud. For the good or the bad, there it is: pure oud oil. Edit: I ́m editing my comments about the Strangelove perfums so far (Dead of Night, Fall into Stars, A Fire Within). Why? Because, after some time trying my samples, there ́s something definitely weird going on with my nose. Or my brain. :D Some call it 'training your nose', or whatever... It ́s a metamorphosis of some kind, I don ́t know. Someone please write a poem about Oud, because it deserves it.

[Second batch] I've owned this for years now, and it's a benchmark for me of how much my tastes have changed. The first time I smelled it, I smelled shit and rose only. Now, I smell primarily delicate oud and violet with incense, and then an unexpected cinnamon note I the mid and early drydown. It's not shitty or difficult to me any more, in fact it's one of the most elegant, wearable oud perfumes I've ever smelled. It pains me to say this, but it smells remarkably similar to King Blue by Amouage, just that bit more refined (which it bloody well should be given the price). Apart from the opening few minutes, it ends up being more of a restrained amber perfume than a prominent oud scent, with chalky incense and the tiniest smudge of sandalwood to smooth things out.

@Whateverwhocares I almost envy you and the others who might share your raw opinion. For me it seems that you are at the beginning of a journey, only without realizing it. It took me more than half a year to reach to the conclusion that I need to buy a bottle of this, as I was so intrigued by my nose having a different impression each time a took a sniff. Some would say that you can train your nose, well in my case this is what kinda happened, because at first, honestly I just could not tell apart this gem from Fall into Stars (I know, right..?!) Maybe one closes the door on a perfume (and a beautiful ride along with it) right away after the very first impression, and it is fine, but I believe in the journey itself. Have fun with whatever you put your nose on!

i will admit, when i first got my sample set i did not enjoy this even one bit. the complex oud along with the other green elements and bergamot absolutely threw me off in the worst ways possible but after a couple months of owning this and my nose becoming more mature after smelling so many perfumes since, ive start to enjoy this a bit too much. i was genuinely suprised today after i sprayed this on a blotter paper how much i liked it. ive actually worn this just once but i remember smelling it so much that night. kept getting whiffs of it non stop. maybe i wasnt the biggest fan back then but i lowkey enjoy it now. still dont think i can where it but on paper im starting to love it. most challenging sample i own. even more than silence the sea

There is a few stages in one's journey as a collector, First you start with more entry level designers, maybe a few clones, then you work your way up to more well known higher level designers, then dabble in more entry level niche, branching out to less well kown niche, and ultimately end at indie niche. I think this is an excellent piece for those who want something advanced when they have reached maturity of their tastes. It is an absolutely beautiful leathery, slightly funky, rose oud in the purist sense. I can draw some comparisons to ombre nomade in that regard. I think if you want to get to the next level of depth and complexion if you do like the ON dna, then this is an absolutely wonderful place to start

When I read down here in the reviews people saying it smells of barns or manure It surprises me Although a lot of the guys here maybe never smelled pure oud oil or agar wood and if they did they would have understood There is definitely oud here but in minimal doses that is very refined It is the best fragrance from the house with oud the rest can’t come close to it Although the performance is abysmal the scent itself is beautiful I enjoyed wearing it It was a great experience but nothing groundbreaking Now to state the obvious it is overpriced And the second question is does it smell like the night by Fredrick Malle the answer is NO Is it better that the night by Fredrick Malle ....not in a million years

Dead of Night makes a statement. It is a bold rose/oud perfume. Not like the rose/oud combo's that are very mainstream this is the real deal. Dark green tangled vines, a forest filled w/ locust trees w/ their jagged thorns. Thorns used by Northern Shrikes to impale their helpless prey. A dark starless night deep in the forest, lost. This is not a perfume for the timid, it is bold, daring, dark and dangerous. A perfume for anyone who wants to get lost in that mysterious dangerous place, it could be the vine and thorn filled forest or it could be a crime ridden inner city. This is a perfume for people who like to live on the edge. Very compelling, mysterious, raw. Filled w/ electric dark emotions.

This will make you smell like one of the world's wealthiest on your way to some place very luxurious and dimly lit. The first whiff is a multi faceted sensual experience -- it unravels tri-fold into oud, violet, smokiness. I personally, at the start and throughout, smell iodine -- but its not bothersome, and I know that some people wouldn't detect the same thing (this seems to be a physiological response more than anything). I love to wear this in the evening and on dates. Its so overtly luxe that it would almost be tacky to wear it anywhere that isn't super special. I'd deem it suitable for fall/winter only. It's very complex and warm.

I’ve read that many people are scared of Dead of Night due to it showcasing Oud. There’s nothing to fear, Dead of Night is an enchanting beauty. I get wafts of Oud, but it’s not fecal, it’s hard for me to describe, but I very much like it here. Then I get wafts of flowers, mostly rose. There’s a spiciness to it and ambery. I love Fall into Stars and this has the same overall feeling even though FIS is more spicy and showcases amber with Oud supporting. Anyway, here Oud shines and it’s lovely. So if you’re one of the people hesitant to give this a try, just go for it, there’s nothing to fear from this heady gem.

First impressions of this fragrance were not the best. Right at the top I got strong oud but also a gasoline and poo scent as someone else mentioned. But I have been sitting with it on my skin for about 2 hours and the rose started coming through which was nice and now it's settled into a pleasant blend of oud, rose, amber musk. Not too much vanilla which is fine by me. Give it a half hour before you go out and it will wow.. Makes you feel like rich European royalty or an oligarchs girlfriend. And you may need to date an Oligarch to purchase it for you as it is Pricey!

Owner of all the Strangelove fragrances, that one is the king of this collection ! Dark, strong and what a oud ... Violet leaves brightens it up in the middle and gives it that sexy animal look! A must-try before buying it for non oud fans! The drydown is very nice too. Indeed, quality has a price , in that case overpriced as the entire strangelove range ! But if you can afford it , don't hesitate. Very few comments on the packaging but it is incredibly elegant with a quality cap that really stands out from the other fragrances.

When I got a sample of this the first time I was fascinated by it but couldn't get past the fecal note. Tonight, after two days of testing out uninspiring leather frags, I wanted to put on something enjoyable so the day wasn't a complete olfactory disaster and this came to mind. Saved the day. Yes it's funky but it is not boring. Maybe not safe in the office (unless your life resembles a John Wick film) but between me and the cats, nobody is complaining. I think I love it, but it's too dirty to take home to meet Mum.

I've had two batches and they were totally different. The first was nuclear and eternal, the more recent a mere ghost of the former, while still smelling good; faint and fleeting. I'm not normally one to wank on about bathes, but when it's this expensive it's worth knowing. As for the scent in my old bottle, it's the most incredible perfume I've come across. Never the same on any two days, complex, dynamic and majestic, it never fails to make me frequently pause for thought while I'm wearing it. Magic.

One of the best natural oud fragrances I’ve ever smelled. It’s skanky, but always kept in check by other notes. This leans heavily masculine on my skin. If you’re looking for a super hardcore oud fragrance, this isn’t it....check out “the night” by Frederic Malle if you want that. But, if you want something wearable and approachable that uses high quality ingredients, this is for you. Scent: 9/10 Longevity: 8/10 Sillage & projection: 7/10 (disappointed) Uniqueness: 8/10

This is hardcore Indian oud, but you get used to it very quickly thanks to the violet and the rose in the background. This is some exquisite stuff. It's in the likes of the overpriced night by frederic malle and nebulous by boadicea, but to me dead of night is my baby, and it takes the cake. At half the cost of the afore mentioned. At times I love the name, at times I don't but the fragrance takes the so called big boys of oud to the cleaners. 10/10 Ethereal!

Masterpiece!!! Very unique Oud-Amber-Rose with magic created by Violet Leaf at the Top and Bourbon Vanilla at the dry down. There is a bit of skank from potent Oud that lurks in the background, but it never over-powers of distracts from the amazing blend. It is sophisticated and not loud. The rose plays more of a binder and never takes center-stage. Classic blending. Modest performance. Shukran Habibi!

difficult to do better smooth floral oud than Dead of Night, perfect perfume from beginning to end ... unisex, easy to wear, very rich olfactory experience. it follows you all day till late. difficult to go from this perfume to any other floral oud...this one is just perfect, pricey though. if i have 3 perfume to choose for a life time, this will be one of them

This is a dark, unapologetic, slightly mysterious, refined, high-quality oud fragrance that echoes the depth of traditional oud compositions, but remains approachable. It does not belong to the category of fragrances that attempt to please everyone; instead, it irresistibly leaves an impression with its mysteriously fierce demeanour.

My all-time favorite of ouds so far, cannot wait to try out the oil version as well! I caught myself constantly comparing other ones to this gem.. If you can, save up and do yourself a favor. Due to the natural ingredients, I am intrigued to discover future batches!

2014 saw the release of two high-end rose oud compositions, Strangelove's deadofnight and Malle's The Night. It doesn't seem coincidental that both refer to nighttime, but perhaps it is. Ropion's composition for Malle uses oud and rose to evoke the breathtaking expansiveness of a desert in the pitch blackness, like looking out over an empty ocean, and boy does it achieve it, whereas Laudamiel's composition for Strangelove has the this creative brief: "there's always a deep breath before a plunge into the deadofnight." Hm. That isn't much to go on, but whenever I take a "deep breath" before a "plunge" into something it is usually because I won't be able to breath while I'm in it - either because there is no oxygen my lungs can process or because I might lose my breath in shock. In deadofnight I smell the former. A sort of watery or heavy-mist type texture surrounds the entirety of the perfume, a Laudamiel signature texture that he is so good at, like you're smelling a very high-quality, infected aquilaria tree after a heavy storm. That, I believe, is an important piece of imagery to my interpretation of deadofnight since this is a pretty linear perfume: it is an oud perfume, full stop. Yes, it might flirt with the rose+oud genre, but its mandate seems to deliver mainly oud with some pretty finery accenting some of the unique characteristics of the chosen material. The opening is a big dose of oud's typical high notes with a lot of quickly off-gassing animalics and fecal notes, fruity-fungal fromage bleu type notes, and - quite curiously and interestingly - a watery, cool, and green violet leaf note. The slight petroleum facet of the violet leaf accenting the facet of danger that comes with oud's high notes, but, mostly, the watery and cool greenness is trying to give oud some lift, levity, and energy. A brief tangent: the smell of oud usually makes me laugh, and not for the least of reasons is how seriously people take it - and how seriously it takes itself. Oud is a complex, pushy, and difficult aroma, which I thoroughly enjoy by the way, imparting an air of regality, solemnity, and exclusivity (again, part of the reason is due to oudists’ veneration of it). But it also smells like barn animal s%*t, and fruity-fungal cave-aged cheeses or in the extreme the medicinal-smelling chemicals of medical tongue-depressors or a dentist’s office. I get an image of a very serious and very proper shah rolling around in farm animal dung, stuffing his face with bleu cheese, while commanding "take me seriously!" - a very grave scowl on his face while horse manure falls out of his hair. I can't it take seriously, sorry. The violet leaf in deadofnight seems to share my opinion. There are florals nearer-to the heart section but they are whispers of pink, powdery, fruity roses, and heady and honeyed jasmine felt long on the breeze rather than as a bouquet paired with oud. They hold to the weighty fog type feeling while also keeping the oud gently and lightly suspended out of its own mire. In its linear fashion the dry down (as such), and the final skin scent, is mostly the oud with some type of amberic note(s) squeezed in at tiny amounts. Something like sandalwood, or maybe a vetiver of some sort, or both. The oud goes sour, green, floral woody much like it does with lostinflowers, but more so noticeable here, and it's making me think vetiver with its typical sour and acrid green qualities. The most interesting part to deadofnight is its dynamic vocal volume. Like the whispers of florals I heard in the heart section, at any given point I feel as though it could disappear from my skin entirely, but, of course, it doesn't - at least, not quickly anyway. It has this excellent and curious ability to thrive in the air around you whilst barely being on top of you. It's this ethereal quality in conjunction with the quick dispensation of the more difficult notes that make deadofnight very approachable for the genre - particularly in the high-end range of the oud genre since, more often than not, oud perfumes of this price range and in usage of high-quality naturals tend to present oud with more manure and bleu cheese in its hair. deadofnight wafts about in the air, living on it, rather than launching from your skin. Short conclusion: I find deadofnight very pleasant, highly enjoyable, and very well done, but similarly a bit of a wallflower; vacillating and unconfident, not sure who it is or what it wants to be, do, or say. At nearly USD$1000 for 100mL, that's a very confident price for a meek perfume. You can also find legitimate full bottles of Malle's The Night on the aftermarket for quite a bit less than that, and assuredly have your breath taken away instead of taking a deep breath for a plunge that doesn't need preparation. That's if you don't want to explore the many, many cheaper options in this very crowded genre. So, all in all, good, but a bit pointless and forgettable.

The top note is fresh horse pucky and/or a particularly ripe day on a Sonoma County dairy farm. Not as offensive as poo from a sick dog, but you still don't want your nose too close to it. Fortunately that only lasts for a few minutes. Unfortunately the transition goes from that, to smelling like Band-aids and/or hospital wound epoxy. It's really uncanny how many different people have said "what smells like Band-aids?" after having recently applied this scent. Some others below have described this as cresolic, or similar to Iodine, but that is too vague and doesn't really capture the specific way this smells pretty much exactly like a Band-aid. Luckily the whole thing calms down to a very balanced floral oud fragrance with moderate sillage, which is perhaps what you'd want in a fragrance like this. For me it lasts a full day, sometimes even with water poured over the application areas. This part of the experience is why you want to own this fragrance. Just be sure to plan ahead... wait at least 30 minutes before letting anyone else smell you. Update: This review came across as incredibly negative, and it should not have, because this is a masterpiece fragrance of the highest quality. It's addictive and sexy and beautiful and just about everything you could ever say that is high praise. The most expensive fragrance I own and I'd pay more for it. Update 2: Wanted to see how this held up in a layering scenario. I'm male but I always loved the smell of YSL Opium on women. We still have half a large bottle of the EDT from the late 80s. I had a feeling it would spice up, and brighten, this fragrance and I was very happy with the combination. The combination remained masculine enough that I would wear it for intimate scenarios. If you can, give it a try!

Violet-rose-oud. Punchy violet combines with the pungency of a funky, sour oud to create a sort of overwhelming updraft that blows away any sense of dirtiness. The end result is a surprisingly transparent, nondescript, animalic musk tinged with an airy rose atop a woody amber base. Moderate projection fades over 3-5hr, longevity 8-10hr. Surprisingly tolerable for how pungent it is, at least to my well-developed collector's nose. You're opening the barn doors, but there are fans behind you keeping most of the stench at bay. Adjacent to but not standing in the middle of. More of a sexy musk than a rose-oud fragrance.

Dead of Night is one of my favorite Strangelove perfumes, although I enjoy Fall into Stars and Lost in Flowers quite a bit as well. The oud in Dead of Night is easily noticeable, reminiscent of an Assamese oud oil I own; the oud is not dirty but reminds me of white peppercorns. For me, DON is a clean oud/rose with some spices and hints of other florals with slight musk. I love wearing it for going out on sunny days; not so much a stay at home fragrance. Lasts quite awhile on skin but does not have huge sillage. If or when my bottle runs out I would definately consider buying again.

A lovely floral woody musk showcasing high quality ingredients. The perfume opens briefly with a crisp bergamot, pink pepper and violet leaf leading to a firm floral heart of rose, jasmine and tuberose. The perfume settles on a powdery bed of oud, sandalwood, vanilla, amber, incense and synthetic musk. The unisex slightly feminine leaning fragrance has moderate to strong sillage and very good longevity. This is a sophisticated, well blended and sensual scent that could become a signature for those with active social night lives. It has a very intoxicating, yet classy allure. Enjoy!

A very nice scent with high quality ingredients but the Rose Oud combo with hints of incense and amber has been done so many times before that it feels a bit redundant and cliched. On top of that this ridiculous asking price of $800 a bottle. There are so many cheaper and almost as good alternatives out there. Even Thirty Three by Ex Idolo which essentially has the same DNA and retails for a fifth of this perfume. Completely skippable unless you want to support this brand.

Very nice. Prefer this one over Fall into Stars. I don't get anything skanky from the oud used. Its very smooth. Also, I don't regard this as "just another rose oud combo". The addition of violet leaf (which is very present throughout) together with jasmine and tuberose, takes this fragrance to the next level and sets it apart from "rose oud" combos. An excellent floral oud.

I'm not an Oud person, and I'm even less of an Oud-Rose person, but I really like this one. The Oud is animalic, but mostly in the opening, so give it time to settle. The Rose is not in-your-face and feminine, it's very discrete, and very well blended. It's complex; sweet, creamy, sexy, and definitely smells expensive. Does it smell £800 expensive? Nope!

Whoa mama! heavy on the animalic undertones but BEAUTIFULLY mixed with the florals. I've tried Marlou scents to find a sexy sweaty animal scent but most of them are way too much. Dead of night is the perfect combo of delicate feminine florals and sweaty primitive sex. If you could capture female ovulation in a fragrance this would be it.

Short and sweet (shocking I know). The opening I find beautiful and strikingly unique. The drydown is...meh. Sorry the projection is low and the sillage is low and it’s not worth the $700+ for a full bottle, to me.

Well fermentated, animalic, real indian oud with that rosy-floral, slightly ozonic air is so well balanced. It won’t be easy to wear, but having a sample is a must.

One day you had a long drive to take. You drank a big ol' coffee to wake yourself up. Somewhere down the highway, as expected, the urge to pee came on, and you pulled over at the nearest rest stop. There was a long line at the men's room though, so you went out into the woods and relieved yourself on a dry-rotted tree stump. It's early August, and the stump sits there (well, where's it going to go?) for a rainless week before a male raccoon wanders by, fresh from a shopping trip to the rest area dumpster, fur matted with sticky-sweet dried soda, dragging a used baby diaper with him for some reason. It is high noon. It is hot. He is in the thick of heat, and sprays. Not my favorite Laudamiel creation.

When I sprayed this onto my skin I asked my friend what she thought it smelled like. She did not answer ‘sensual Rose tinged, mysterious woody and fabulous’ - because it smelled like ‘when I lift my dog’s poo and put it into a plastic bag’ - I felt that wasn’t quite right - to me it smells just like when you visit the zoo in high summer, and you stop to marvel at the elephants. Then they poo. The smell of poo in hay in high summer. That’s more accurate. Perhaps this has to do with my body chemistry? You might love it. Just don’t blind buy, like I did! Lesson learnt.......until next time.

Masterpiece ...ofshit! Opening is diaper worthy. Fecal and oudy. Ehhh disgusting, particularly up close. I sprayed the back of my hand and sniffed it, then I ate 3 helpings of refried beans and a gas station burrito. I farted on that same hand and it smelled the same. I shit you not. No pun intended. This stuff is gross. Smells like someone dropped a long stem rose in dog diarrhea. Smells like fresh poop floating along in a sewer trench. Smells like a New York City gutter. Smells like a portable john at the end of the night, day 3 of Burning Man and no one has cleaned it during the entirety of the festival. Not even once! Who the hell wants to smell like this? I wouldn’t wear this if you paid me the $4000 they’re asking for a bottle. I assume the bottle looks like a stool sample container sourced from a gastroenterologist’s office. If it doesn’t, well it should. When I say this stuff is the shit, I’m not kidding. Total crap.

One drop of DeadofNight oil de parfum caused chaos in my household. Such is the power of the fragance. I was not able to tolerate its animalic ouverture, and neither was my neurodivergent child who recoiled at the scent whist being at least 4 feet away from the fraction of the drop, coughing, crying, gagging. It is truly pungent. Both cats mesmerised by the smell but ultimately offended within seconds. I had to change, wash and dispose of the long sleeve teeshirt, my nose was point blank, not able to handle. This is NOT a safe blind buy. I understand that more experienced noses will draw the complex elements of the scent, however there will be some who are sensitive and will not be able to overcome the strong fecal shock ouverture, once the fragance settles, the scent strongly evocative of my elderly and now defunct relatives best perfume, gone off.

Most important thing in this fragrance for me it is the kind of oud & sensual side (green leather & animalic notes) its the soul of this fragrance who saved oud even not be boring. There are others notes maybe you notice like the mix between vanilla and sweet fruits, the soft incense in background. And soft sandalwood in final levels to fragrance. In my opinion this fragrance worth it worth it worth it! and I recommend it for oud and cold leather lovers. While there are some fine ingredients at work in this fragrance, the composition is somewhat redundant. Upfront, it’s a rose-driven oud over slightly animalic / slightly dry musks with some ambery woods and spices thrown in. The oud’s fecal—somewhat cheesy upfront à la Syoofi, and it becomes more barnyard as it settles. The rose smells like a doctored otto, but the bitterness of the stem is backgrounded with the main emphasis placed on the sweeter headspace of the petals—an effect created through the inclusion of other floral notes. The musks serve to sustain what quickly becomes a purr of a skin scent; low projection but with fascinating sillage. Upfront, it’s bombastic to the point of being mawkish, and it sort of latches onto that whole Roja Dove / Clive Christian / Xerjoff aesthetic of “luxury" that border on tackiness. After thirty minutes of so, when things tame down a little, I think this is the point where it shines the most. It becomes a slightly musky, slightly raspy wooden amber—quite warm and poised, and nowhere near as over the top as the opening. It rings of some of Laudamiel’s older compositions (there’s a hint of Amber Absolute in here, for example), and there’s a scratchy dryness that’s unexpected from such rich ingredients. It’s probably at this point where Dead of Night gets as close as it’s going to get to its ad copy as it’s quite intimate and heat reactive. By this point, the oud and the rose have already stepped offstage, and what you’re left with is suspiciously close to an ambroxan / maltol cocktail. The scent is a thick, dense affair that throws everything at you at once and then runs away and hides. Its high points are that it wears dynamically, has enough depth and form to keep you intrigued, and the materials are undeniably top-shelf. Given that it’s Laudamiel, it’s well polished; no rough edges and no visible cracks. Yet we’ve just seen this kind of thing far too many times now. I’d assume that it's aimed at people who aren’t as well versed in the oud-wave, and are perhaps unaware of other comparable scents that can be had for a fraction of the price with comparable materials. Either that, or its for the client who’ll drop $500 on a bottle simply to have a solid, nice quality, but ultimately MOR amber-oud in their collection. It’s fine and “nice,” but completely unoriginal and obscenely overpriced. If you’ve been around the oud block a few times and have tried some of the real deal stuff, then you’ll probably find this to be skippable.

Oud is an acquired taste for sure. In its purest form, it could be medicinal, resinous, fruity, earthy, gourmand, woody, sweet, incensy, minty... you name it. However, it is not naturally animalic or rotten cheesy unless you soak the wood chips(or dust) in water for longer periods to be able to get more yield or that fermented aspect in your oud oil. Dead of Night is a challenging perfume to say the least, and this challenge is the direct result of the oud oil(possibly Laotian or low grade Assam) used in this composition. I also get some slighty musky nuance, maybe synthetic civet or hyrax which adds some additional stink boost. Comparisons to Ajmal’s Mukhallat Dahn al Oudh Moattaq is understandable, but that one is more natural and less edgy. I think Dead of Night is closer to Rasasi’s Boruzz Asrar Indonesia which is again a better blend imho. Overall, an extravagant but average composition in a nutshell.

Had this for a year now, bought the pure perfume oil, a rarity. This is the stuff, high level perfumery in both composition and materials. Real oud, and showcased beautifully but kept under control. Real sandalwood, you don't find that these days. There is vibrant violet, a shot of real ambergris, sharp genuine bergamot citrus, spiritual resins and a semi-sweet rosel note tucked neatly in there, it does not come across as a rose fragrance. The scent dries down to an equisite sandalwood complemented by light spice and bergamot. Wow, this is a real gem, this is the next level if you think you've plateau'd on your scent hobby. I sampled another one from the line, Silence The Sea, and plan to invest in that sooner than later. Not a blind buy if you don't know what oud smells like, if you do appreciate oud this is one of the best I know of, overall in my top 5 of all time.

Just recently trained my nose enough to start appreciating Ouds...and I've come to learn that the stinkier, the more i like them. I've also come to realize that a good stinky Oud is SO expensive.... At my local niche perfumer store, i recently fell in love with Amouge King Blue, but so pricey i couldn't commit to purchasing. So, I've been on the hunt for a more affordable version. I ordered a bunch of Oud-forward samples and tried this one. Immediately said to myself "I've got to have it". Starts off strong, animalic, barnyard chic. Later morphs into something so elegant, so refined and floral. I liken it to the "female version" of Amouge King Blue. Fast forward....to my surprise when i saw the PRICE TAG! 😭😭 WHYYYYYYY. I might just have to spend the 240 to get the 15ml. If you like Ouds, this is a must.
