Vangelis

This. THIS. is what I've been looking for when I set out to find my signature fragrance 10 years ago!! I went to a perfume store in my area setting out to try and buy something from Guerlain L'Art et La Matiere. I tested all of the orientals and moved on to smell Kilian, Heeley, Profvmvm Roma and some more. I turned around to ask for more test strips and the guy I spoke to happen to be the fragrance expert for the store chain. He made us smell some stuff but when I told him that I love Armani Privé Bleu Turquoise he gave me this to smell. he told me it smells like Masala chai. I immediately melted (my friend and this guy told me I had that absolute happiness look on my face). This is the absolute creamiest soft spicy smell I've been looking for the longest time. All niche perfumes that are described as creamy are not this cream creamy and becomes skin scent too easily. That always makes me hesitate to put down a lot of money for non-designer fragrance. I'm ecstatic to finally find my dream signature fragrance! UPDATE: Okay. Let me put down a proper review as my initial one was just me fangirling like an idiot. The notes listed here are incomplete. According to their website it should be the following. Top notes: Cardamom, Bitter Almond, Pepper, Clementine. Heart notes: Jasmine, Carnation. Base notes: Sandalwood, Vanilla. The opening has a blast of black pepper it might make you sneeze. The black pepper lingers but every other notes bloom in together and create a melange of comforting and warm spices on an extremely creamy and plush vanilla base. The vanilla is not boozy at all. I don't find it too sweet or too bitter. It's just right. I could not distinguish the flowers. I reckon they're there to provide a little floral sweetness. No indolic poopy smell. It smells pretty linear the entire time but comfortable with 0 screechiness. It's not exactly a challenging fragrance but it's blended gorgeously and creates the most comforting scent to me. I got it for EUR 130ish for 100ml. To me it's a good value for a well-blended dumb-reach comforting scent.

I'm still very much in the testing phase with all the SD Vanillas, but so far, this is the one that is standing out and keeping me coming back for more. The vanilla is very present throughout the wear but never heavy or cloying - it's a light, pleasant, intriguing vanilla. I can't really identify the other notes as they all seem to stay in the background in a support role to let the lovely vanilla shine. The overall effect to me is a fresh, almost green vanilla, which is interesting, since vanilla is so commonly combined with spices, woods or is heavily gourmand. My experience of it also contradicts the notes listed. This should wear as a spicy vanilla, but to my nose it comes off more fresh. I told myself when purchasing all three sample packs that it was just for sampling, but I might be losing my resolve when it comes to Vangelis. A full, albeit small bottle may be in my future. Why couldn't I have chosen a cheap hobby, lol! Update: And @oncebitten -- YES! The banana note. I thought I was hallucinating but just read your review and see you got that too. Just one more thing to love about Vangelis!

This is lovely and very different to anything in my current collection of vanillas. It shares more than a few notes with Shalimar, but I find everything here infinitely more modern and accessible. I get very little of the citrus, but I'm okay with that since I was really hoping for a soft, spice-tinged vanilla, and that's exactly what this delivers on. The cardamom and clove are superb, and it must be some trick my senses are playing on me but I get the faintest whiff of banana mixed in with chai tea? What a warm, beautiful treat. I really appreciate that they offer 7.5ml sprays for every fragrance in the line. It's a great, low commitment way to give these a test run. I've got samples of Vangelis, Osiris, and Ozkan, and this is the first one I'm trying out. Highly likely I will be graduating to a full bottle when the sample runs out!

I'll make it simple, it's heavenly. I wear it daily and the compliments don't stop. A very clever blending that makes people smile when they pass by you. I am on my last full size and will lament that I cannot buy it anymore, well actually, I am crushed. I have not found anything even close to it and that is a great disappointment. It worked with my body chemistry so very perfectly. In the 1980's I used to by Ivoire Parfum in Nice, just two dabs behind the ears were very heady. The original formula for Ivoire and Vangelis are/were in my top 5. Some things should stay the same.

This is my favorite from Sylvaine Delacourte's vanilla line. Not surprising considering 3 of my favorite notes (cloves, cardamom & cinnamon) are listed. What is surprising is how light and fresh this fragrance smells. With those notes, you would expect something spicy, heavy, and cloying. But here, the spices are done with such a light hand, that they entice instead of blasting you in the face. Also, what helps is that this perfume is not too sweet, so it's never cloying even in 30+ degree weather, like today. Overall just a beautiful, elegant, superbly balanced composition.

A truly unique concoction by Sylvaine Delacourte, as are most of her scents. Aside from the vanilla, spice notes and the slight powdery effect, what I love the most about Vangelis is that bright, juicy clementine note. I think it truly amps up this scent and makes it appropriate for literally any situation. It seems pretty weird in theory, adding a citrus fruit with spices, but when applied, the results are outstanding! Recommend for people who love oriental spicy fragrances.

Another lovely refined fragrance. I love spices so you can imagine my anticipation. It is spicy but not overly so. Vanilla is still Empress of India. She is flattered and excited by three potentially strong notes but not too overwhelmed. The touch of Clementine adds the just perfect amount of juicy sweetness that this spicy scent requires. This is not a heavy scent but easy to wear anytime. Perfectly unisex. I get moderate longevity and sillage.

The clementine note seems to last for hours, which is very unusual for a citrus note. The blending is superb and the overall ambience is one of something fresh and spicy yet relaxing. The spices are present but never dominate, which is another plus. Perfectly unisex, and very elegant.

This is my favorite vanilla scent, I am obsessed with it right now. It is a lovely spicy vanilla to my nose. The vanilla is fresh rather than sweet, and the spices give it a nice warmth. It reminds me of the woods and somewhat of campfire. I wore it over the winter and am still finding it nice as the weather has turned sunny and warm. It is a super comforting, warm scent, and I can't stop smelling myself when I am wearing it.

I think this is one of the most enjoyable scents from the brand. It's not quite for me, but it is a traditional old-fashioned scent like wst mentioned below. While it doesn't smell similar it does put me in the mind of fragrances like Ma Liberte and Egoiste, albeit modernised. It has a strange food-like quality that is just bizarre. Like the house of someone who cooks a lot. Homey. Definitely an Autumn scent, or winter.

Great quality from a great perfumer. I’m spoiled with a huge wardrobe and I’m usually not too impressed by new releases so I’m happy to find this smoky addictive vanilla. This is difficult to describe, but I can say that it’s a warm velvety perfume and it would work on anyone. You can definitely understand why Guerlain hired Delacourte, and it’s exciting to see her independent work.

This one is something special, truly gorgeous on my skin. Plus, it lasts quite a long time. It smells fairly similar to Smeraldo from the Musc collection but it is still its own fragrance. Spicy, warm and very beautiful.

It’s so spicy, I love it!! I love cloves and that note is very present here. The vanilla in the dry down smells like cooking vanilla to me but I don’t mind

Oh this one should be good for the warm spring/summer night! For my nose it’s more citrusy and spicy then vanilla but I really like it. Very unusual.

Such a lovely almond vanilla, like macaronis. I can't wait to order a full bottle.

Really nice! I'm not running to buy a FB, but it's very pretty. It opens with a lot of sweet clementine, followed by warm vanilla. The spices roll on in and are blended well to my nose. I can't specifically pick out the clove or cinnamon but I know they're there. Silage blooms in about ten minutes. A couple hours in, it's still swirling around me. Much better projection than a lot of other fragrances on my skin. It's a sweet, spiced, orange-vanilla with just a bit of powder. Tiny bit of Iso E Super gives it just a touch of woods, it won't hit you over the head, just grounds the scent. It may sound Christmasy from my description but it's not. To me it's a great summertime scent or even a daily office scent. I'm enjoying it and I love that Sylvaine offers these discovery sets at such an economical price, including shipping. I'm off to buy the musk set next. Oh and one last thing, no almond on my skin.

I think Vangelis might be the best of the Sylvaine Delacourte vanillas, but after testing them all very thoroughly, I'm so over this specific vanilla note that I feel no desire to ever get any of these. The problem with this line is that they all dry down to the same strong vanilla note, which is creamy and tropical and nice, but not that exciting after all. Vangelis combines the vanilla with spicy notes of cloves, pepper and cardamon, some mandarine and also a leathery kind of smell. It's an interesting combination that really works in the opening, but I wish it would dry down to something deep and complex. Instead it just dries down to the usual sweet island vanilla. If you're not tired from the vanilla sample set and want a spicy vanilla that is not too heavy and easy to wear, I guess it's good. I have no issues about the performance. But to me this is not full bottle worthy.

I wanted to challenge myself to write this review without including the phrase " spicy vanilla ," but what else can I say. Vangelis is highly pleasant, extremely unisex, sophisticated and likable. Yes, the combination of the vanilla and cedar creates that classic pencil shaving accord, but unlike one or two of its sister frags, I don't feel like I'm burying my face in the bottom of my jansport backpack- That's the citrus brightening it up, I think. In this situation, I think I should forego a thoughtful, personal, or laboriously evocative review in favor of a recommendation: buy the Sylvaine Delacourte sample sets. Buy all of them. It's $30 for 15 samples, which is unheard of at this level of quality. Of the 15, there's only one that I won't wear again (you can look through my other reviews if you're curious.), And, sadly, there's more than one that I need in full size.

Lovely powdery vanilla fragrance. I do get a slight orangeyness, it's very muted and powdery though, like a sweet orange drink mix, no tartness. It is also lightly spicy with clove and cardamom, but they are so gentle here, they don't jump out at you. As it dries down, it becomes warmer and less powdery. It has phenomenal lasting power for a fragrance that feels light when you first put it on. I sprayed my scarf liberally with this today - nobody else noticed it (fine by me!) but I could smell it wafting around me as I walked. If you like a lighter vanilla, this is a good one. It does have a similarity to her musk line - I feel like both of the lines have a similar musky, powdery sweetness.

I completely agree with @Myri_Dans. I’ve been waiting to buy a 30ml of Virgile after the restocking, but they’ve only left five perfumes and ‘reinforced’ them, which makes me apprehensive that this might mean adding those horrendous new chemicals. In fact, ideally I would have bought all or most of the old range if they kept those 7.5ml sprays available. By the time I had a chance to go through the discovery sets and develop a taste for them, all 7.5ml and 30ml were gone. The new bottle design is so sterile and soulless - like it’s a prison issue. A misconceived re-brand.

Vangelis out of the Vanilla Collection would be the one i would purchase if i had to make a choice. to my nose and on my skin - smoky herbal perfume, similar to Memoir for men by Amouage, but with nicer greens, less of them and nicer smoke. all well rounded by vanilla, that gives it density and touch of sweetness. great for winter. I've smelled something similar to Vangelis before and it's spicy opening leads out into a balmy amber testure but again there's something wrong with this scene. It has a medicinal rubbery effect on top of the gag inducing, tepid, wobble of a poorly made vanilla pannacotta. I'm kinda drawn to it by the resinous, dryness of the spices for a moment but I need to be strong and stick to what I'd wear and this ain't it.

After 10 minutes can already detect cloves, even without checking the notes, freshness of cardamom, not a distinctive vanilla, but something sweet in a background, very rich scent, concentrated like essential oils, I haven't found a perfume before where I could detect notes that smelled like a real thing until now. I love it. I would say it's more masculine perfume, so could be easily worn by a man.

I like this but it's not my favorite from Sylvaine Delacourte's five vanilla based perfumes. Leans a little smokey and gourmand, and performs a little below average on my perfume eating skin (not the fault of Sylvaine Delacourte). Grab the reasonably priced La Collection Vanille direct from the perfumer. I'm making my way through them and my favorite is the one this is often compared to, Virgile.

Vanilla worked from sweet powder. Like a glass of milk with honey and cinnamon. It is not delicate but nutritious. There may be specific occasions to wear it: a very cold day when we feel homesick for childhood, a day when we crave a snack in the afternoon but we won't have the chance to do it...this perfume can replace those circumstances, in In any case, it is evocative

This smells like a vanilla chai latte with a note of orange. Like all of the vanillas from the collection, this quickly becomes a skin scent, but it has a rather long lasting power. Although not my favorite from the collection, I do enjoy this one. This would be great for fall or winter, as there is a smokeyness to this scent— like burning leaves in autumn.

Extremely powdery. All I smelled at first was powder until I read a review that described it as “a mug of spiced chai with milk.” I totally get what that reviewer was saying, and now I smell a light spiciness. It was way too powdery for my liking at first (and I love powdery fragrances) but the dry down is lovely. I would love this as a bedtime fragrance.

The opening spray smells like cinnamon, then brightens up with wafts of a juicy orangey sweetness (like a freshly-cut orange). Shortly after, the cinnamon starts to take a back seat and I start to pick up a sheer vanilla with wafts of sweet orange intermingling back and forth. As this development's taking place (all within the first minutes), the vanilla becomes less sheer and more creamy but all the while balanced against the sweet orange meanwhile a faint zesty aroma of cinnamon lingers in the background. Ultimately I stop getting any cinnamon at all and instead the background support it provided is replaced by an herb-like aroma (seemingly a signature of the Vanille line by Delacourt). Interestingly, as it continues to dry down, this herb-like spiciness comes back to the forefront and competes for lead presence with the orangey sweetness. Eventually when all settles what I get is a syrupy-orange sweetness supported by a creamy vanilla and surprisingly, a light herbal smokiness. The smokiness complements the creamy vanilla & syrupy sweet orange for a unique scent.

I was hoping for a vanilla and cinnamon scent, unfortunately this is not the case. Vangelis opens with a note of spicy clementine but the spices are only made of cloves (carnation?) and cardamom. They nevertheless remain very soft, almost extinct. Then the vanilla, slightly sweet, sets in and finally the bitter almond. I think the bitterness of the almond gives a curious medicinal smell to the whole thing. Vangelis is not bad in itself but I find it weird; It's a blend that just doesn't work for me. Complete pyramid (according to Sylvaine Delacourte): Top notes: Cardamom, bitter almond, pepper, clementine Heart notes: Jasmine, carnation Base notes: Sandalwood, vanilla EDIT: I retested it, and I still pick up that medicinal effect, but it’s less pronounced than the first time. Now, I can smell the cinnamon, which makes Vangélis much more enjoyable for me. In the end, it’s actually quite nice, though still rather unique (because of that medicinal aspect). I’d recommend testing it before buying.

For my nose, its very almondy and quite spicy vanilla. Powdery and totally unisex. I love cardamom, but it doesn't come out convincingly here. Also, the base is quite woody, might be cedar. Plus is that clove note is not strong and cinnamon is slightly fresh, also not too full on. Overall, not my preferred one from Delacourte vanillas, I much prefer Valkyrie and with uplifting greenness and citrus and Virgile as herbal aromatic. Vangelis could work better for cold season, in heat its a bit cloying and too powdery. Drydown is slightly leathery. The performance is limited, moderate longevity, doesn't project much, but stays as a skin scent for a few hours.

I ordered the Vanilla sampler set. And for $10 including shipping, it's a steal for the quality of these samples. There are 5 total, this one was the reason I ordered, And........my nose only picks up on the cloves and cardamon. Also, I'm smelling wood, not cedar that always smells like pencil shavings to me, but some wood. I think it's the clove before it really blooms, it can smell woody. My nose isn't picking up any clementine, almond or even the reason I bought it ~ the vanilla. I'll put it away and retest, sometimes that works. I'm bummed.

sooooooo boriiiiing. It fades away very quicky into nothing. Nice powdery vanilla scent but it's really nothing special. :(

I don’t get any vanilla from this. It smells soapy and fruity. Not bad but not what I expected at all !

Vangelis smells a little powdery, spicy, and citrusy mixed into a lovely vanilla of course. This is my second favorite of the vanilla collection. The others are forgettable. I love cardamom and cloves...and I love a good vanilla so I was semi-guaranteed to at least like this perfume. I don't mind the cinnamon at all in this fragrance. The citrusy clementine opening is also quite lovely. It's delightful on my skin. I will definitely sample the other 2 collections from this house at some point. EDIT: I still have my sample 15JULY2020 and I've fallen way out of like with this and all the others from the vanilla series. They're all just bland or on the verge of terrible including this one which I liked a lot when the sample was fresh at the start of the year. Vangelis to me is the best of the line...but that's not saying much at all. -

Vangelis smells like orange, clove, vanilla ribbon candy. Very cheap smelling also.

I don't like it at all. I hate cinnamon dominated fragrances.

This review is more about the house. There are 3 lines (musk, oranges, and vanilla), each has 5 scents and a sample kit is 10 euros on the official website with free shipping, I recommend you get the sample kit. Notes: - Out of the 15 scents I dislikes 3 maybe, mostly from the oranges line. The musk and Vanilla lines are mostly safe likes. - Performance is great! EDP indeed, last long and I don't get anosmic to any of these stuff, I keep smelling them for hours. Easily 7 hours, 12 if you spray clothes. - Quality!! and most of them really are very well crafted. - One "negative", several of the perfumes smell extremely similar, you might even forget which is which as they sometimes feel as a slight modification from each other. Also means if you "almost" love a scent but something bugs you about it, there is another that would satisfy you. Dovana and Florentine for example are similar, also to this scent, to the extend that the difference can be neglectable! - They are all marketed as unisex but most of them lean feminine, I think. Not every man can pull these off, especially if you are looking for a masculine, "sexy" or bad boy scents. This is more clean.. classy.. cozy.. feminine. All in all, one of my favorite houses, I own Osiris, Florentine and maybe will get Valkyrie. Uniqueness (to other houses), Quality, performance, value to money are all top.

Resampling this because I dismissed the whole vanilla collection quickly when I first sampled it, and at this time of the year people always talk about cosy spicy gooey sweet vanilla cream yada yada... so I thought, why not? Turns out my nose hairs have gotten a bit used to the piercing sugary "Vanille de Madagascar" note they used throughout the vanilla collection and this time around the spiciness from cardamom and cloves came through clearer. I also notice lots of sour oranges. The spices try to swim in this sea of sweet tart vanilla talcum powder and gasp for survival, eventually drown at 2 hours in. At this stage we have the sweet and sour vanilla talcum powder, should it not be powdery it could be quite edible like the candy. It's interesting because I usually am fond of sour/tart perfumes but here with the vanilla it just goes up 2 octaves and is really distracting. I share the same conclusion with SailorV in that the musk collection is much more enduring. At the same time I really appreciate Sylvaine Dealcourte's artistic concept in creating variations based off of one note. It does get old though, especially after 5 iterations... unless you really dig that vanilla concoction, which apparently some do. A solid meh.

Spicey orange, syrup at first. For the first 40mins to an hr, it smells like a cough syrup/concoction (medicinal), with cinnamon in the background. I thought i could smell honey too. At complete dry down (after say an hour /ages!) it turns into something completely different. The clementine moves to the background, the cinnamon dominates and there is a creamy, sweet tobacco like scent and vanilla. Beautiful. It reminds me of the opening of TF Tobacco Vanille and it projects. I started asking myself and the person I was with what i was smelling as it smelt like nothing I had sprayed on the day and TF Tobacco Vanille had not been sprayed recently. After this, i kept smelling my arm. Very drastic transition IMO. I dislike the opening and really like the final scent, but I own Tobacco vanille and it takes so long to reach dry down/the base, i don't see myself purchasing a full bottle.

Lovely! So far, this is my favorite from the house of Sylvaine Delacourte. For the past 2 weeks I’ve been enjoying my sample sets from her 3 lines- Musc, Vanilla, and Orange Blossom. I highly recommend spending the $30 for a lovely and fun olfactory experience :) This is one of the best and may be full bottle worthy. Warm, creamy, spicy and doesn’t fall flat in the dry down. It reminds me of the foam on top of a steaming mug of spiced chai with milk. It’s definitely spicier than your average women’s department store perfume but nowhere near as spicy as Kenzo Elephant. The spices are tempered with an airy fog of lovely vanilla with a hint of sweetness from the citrus. They don’t smell alike, but if you enjoy Tom Ford’s Noir Pour Femme, you will most likely enjoy Vangelis, too.

Clementine cloves with hints of vanilla cinnamon swirls. first it hits hard with burst of clementine, then slowly the cloves rises with bits of cardamom & almonds shells. The cinnamon vanilla mix builds up and stays at the back and creates that sweet base that held the clementine clove mix. It's spicy and full of character. The Indian chai (Tea) was behind creating this blend which i feel that that too. As lady "Sylvaine" said "imagine yourself in south India enjoying chai next to a spice merchant with his spices that he just harvested", and it's truly what could be seen when this fragrances is sprayed on. Bravo.

Potpourri......but NOT cloying. Light clove/almond/vanilla with a branch of clementine for sparkle.This on also goes thru changes on me...which I like.This one, out of my 5 samples was the only instant like,so it is 1st Place position, with Virgile coming in a close 2nd Place. Will have to decide,after full wearings, which one of the two will be a FB purchase. Note: All of the 5 samples I received in the Vanilla line, provide low-to-medium projection/sillage.They are basically, IMO, skin scents...however...very well done.

I am NOT a vanilla lover but I really wanted to give this beautiful house a chance because all the notes seemed so enticing. My first attempt was Vangelis and I actually believed I would be proven very misguided with regard to how overbearing the vanilla note tends to be with my chemistry! This was NO exception... the longevity of Vangelis is amazing but what has persisted all day is a very sweet and smoky vanilla and nothing more. Not my cup of tea but I think if you love vanilla, you have a winner! Time to try another!

I wanted to love this for the name and the notes, but oh, no. What is billed as spicy vanilla, is actually a powdery vanilla with plastic notes. Terrible. My husband hated it too. Just awful. After scrubbing, it was a nice powdery vanilla, but the vanilla base SD uses isn’t the kind of Vanilla I admire. It’s too much like vanilla talc and not enough like actual vanilla. Not sure how that works as it’s natural vanilla, from what I understand. But this one was an utter failure on my skin. Just dreadful.

For a fleeting moment, I get the fresh, sweet juiciness of clementine; the warm smokiness of cloves, cardamom, and cinnamon sweetened by the vanilla, which plays a supporting role here, set in really quickly thereafter. It's not too sweet nor too spicy; not too fresh nor too heavy - I would say this is a year-long fragrance, suited for all seasons!

This was one of my least favorites from the Vanilla Discovery Set...smells a bit medicinal to me (I think the cloves are ruining this one for me), although the creamy vanilla basenote is enjoyable. It is a good unisex vanilla, but not a repurchase for me. I seem to be the minority on this one though, so if you enjoy spicy vanillas, give it a try!

Smells kind of like a clove-studded clementine pomander mixed with shampoo. A very gentle smell. Too strong at first but quickly settles down into sweet clove, clementine, almond, and vanilla. It's nice enough--definitely unisex--and I'll use up the sample because it's so easy-wearing, but again, nothing to write home about.

I get a smoky herbal vanilla with a ton of spices. Like a rich chai tea you are drinking and someone sitting very close to you is wearing Angelique Noire. This scent is like that on my skin, like a super strong chai tea with a very distant, very faint node to AN. I like it ok, but not really what I am looking for.

This is yummy! It is spicy but not overly so, and the vanilla comes out after a while. I really like this one, even though I'm drawn mostly to powdery or oriental/floral scents. The sillage is strong at first, then softer, and the scent could be worn easily by a man. In fact, I like it on my husband as well.
