Today we leave behind the modern refinement of Town & Country and step into new territory as we explore Arabesque by The Merchant of Venice—my first time reviewing anything from this visually striking and opulent niche house. Known for their Venetian glass–inspired bottles and their storytelling rooted in historic trade routes, The Merchant of Venice often leans into rich, sensual compositions shaped by Eastern perfumery traditions. Arabesque, built around sweet woods, spices, tobacco, and resinous warmth, appears to embody this ethos fully. Based on the notes alone, it aims to wrap the wearer in a tapestry of depth and richness, evoking silk drapery, glowing embers, and the intimate mood of Middle Eastern fragrance craft. Whether it delivers that seductive warmth with balance and finesse—or crosses into overly dense territory—is what we’re here to uncover. Let’s see what unfolds within its ornate embrace. Opening: The opening is sweet, fruity, and warm. The primary notes I get are plum, cinnamon, tobacco, and cedar, with plum and cinnamon taking center stage. The plum greets the nose first with an intensely sweet, juicy, and dark fruity accord. It carries a jammy richness but also a distinct tartness reminiscent of biting into the skin of a ripe plum. While plum is often used in designer fragrances like 1 Million Lucky or Le Male Elixir Absolu, the execution here feels noticeably higher quality—far more natural, vivid, and photorealistic. Behind the plum sits the cinnamon, offsetting the sweetness with deep, warm spice. It's a beautifully natural cinnamon that reveals hints of wood and powder beneath its overt spiciness. Tobacco and cedar round out the opening, with the tobacco presenting as a warm, sweet tobacco leaf accord reminiscent of the style found in Tobacco Vanille, but executed here with a smoother, more tempered character. The cedar adds a dry, stabilizing woodiness that grounds the composition without veering into the sharp “pencil shaving” territory cedar can sometimes have. I also detect faint dusty, vanillic nuances—likely from the tonka bean—though they remain subtle at this stage. Dry Down: The dry down is sweet, warm, and balsamic. The primary notes are tobacco, benzoin, cinnamon, and tonka bean, with tobacco and benzoin taking the lead. As the fragrance settles, the tobacco rises to the forefront, emphasizing its warm, sweet, and distinctly natural dried-leaf profile—never smoky, harsh, or ashy. The benzoin joins it with a deep, rich, ambery presence reminiscent of the luxurious benzoin used in fragrances like MFK’s Grand Soir, though more understated here. Cinnamon moves into a supporting role, offering the same warm, spicy softness from the opening, now calmer and more integrated. Meanwhile, the tonka bean becomes more apparent, contributing its dusty, vanillic sweetness and adding a creamy foundation to the balsamic warmth. The dry down is enveloping, smooth, and deeply characteristic of high-end Eastern-inspired tobacco compositions. Performance: The performance is exceptional. Initial projection is nuclear, easily filling a room and leaving a dense, intoxicating scent trail. After a few hours, the projection remains impressively strong, with the fragrance still capable of scenting an entire space and leaving a heavy scent trail. Even at the 7–8 hour mark, it continues projecting at around 4–6 feet, and the trail remains easily noticeable. Arabesque lasted roughly 12 hours on my skin before becoming a true skin scent, showcasing elite-level longevity and sillage. When to Wear: Arabesque is a fall/winter fragrance best reserved for evening wear. Its rich, opulent construction lends itself beautifully to date nights, romantic settings, or special occasions. It could even work for certain formal events if applied sparingly, but its depth and intensity make it far too decadent for casual outings or the office. Blind Buy: If you enjoy rich, sweet tobacco-centric fragrances like Tobacco Vanille, Pure Havane, or Vanille Havane, Arabesque is a very safe blind buy. It delivers everything enthusiasts look for in the genre while offering its own twist through the prominent plum in the opening. Final Verdict: Arabesque checks every box for me: a rich, immersive scent profile, exceptional performance, and a level of refinement that stands out even among tobacco-heavy fragrances. While my collection already contains several fragrances built around tobacco, Arabesque offers something genuinely distinct through its striking plum opening, which adds complexity, freshness, and a signature twist that prevents it from overlapping with anything I already own. The high-quality materials, the natural expression of the spices and resins, and the smooth, polished tobacco all speak to thoughtful construction and artisanal execution. Its longevity and projection are equally impressive, reinforcing its luxurious presence from start to finish. Arabesque is a statement fragrance—bold, elegant, and beautifully crafted—and I’ll absolutely be adding a bottle to my personal collection. Arabesque from The Merchant of Venice Before I begin talking about the fragrance itself, I have to give a shoutout to the bottle and presentation, which are both absolutely beautiful! The bottle especially (from their Murano Exclusive collection) is a work of art! It is stunningly gorgeous, and has a wonderful heft to it. The sprayer leaves a bit to be desired, but one wouldn't be faulted for mistaking this bottle as a decor item on first glance! The deep blue and gold are truly a sight to be seen, and all my efforts at capturing it haven't done it justice. Now onto the fragrance itself! Arabesque opens with a beautiful spiced, incredibly juicy plum note, bordering on boozy, that's enough to make on salivate. The plum accord is decadent, evoking imagery of a plum ripe enough to send red juices running down one's chin, while still maintaining an air of elegance. The sweetness of the plum is beautifully balanced by a sharp kick of ginger that takes it away from cloying territory, and is supported in the background by the subtlest of tobacco notes, giving a touch of warmth and smokiness to the plum liquor. As the scent itself progresses, the ginger begins to fade, and a dusting of cinnamon takes its place, elevating the fragrance as it plays off of the opening notes that, oddly enough, get stronger rather than fading. The plum shifts from fresh, adopting a more stewed character, and the tobacco becomes more pronounced, taking on a caramelized character, as it blooms in full. This is supported silently by a creamy tonka bean (a la Feve Deliceuse) and woody cedar that add body and intrigue to the already mutli-faceted scent. Towards the end of the mid, and the start of the drydown, the ginger and cinnamon fade completely, and the plum takes on a candied nature, joined by a stunning, full bodied tobacco and incredibly luscious vanilla, with a resinous backbone to help keep the fragrance from becoming the typical vanilla-tobacco we see all too often. This already lovely combination is tinged with the slightest of white musks, giving it a coziness that warms the soul, and never fails to bring a smile to my face. And it stays this way till it fades away, always leaving me wanting to spray just a little bit more (though my trigger happy self feels the pain of my wallet every single time I give into this desire.) Now, to address the elephant in the room. This fragrance is often compared to Tobacco Vanille from Tom Ford. However, where Tobacco Vanille is a melange of stewed fruits and thickly sweet tobacco, Arabesque is a more restrained composition, and therein is exactly why I like it more. The refined, and more level-headed approach of Arabesque to this classic combo of notes makes it a far more enjoyable wearing experience. It flirts with gourmand territory without every truly crossing the threshold (as TV does), striking a stunning balance of sophistication. The complexity, depth, and subtle nuances of this stunning creation (where I found Tobacco Vanille to be a largely one-dimensional wear) are exactly why I can comfortably say this is a far superior fragrance, with apologies to all those who swear by TV. All in all, Arabesque is a superb perfume, displaying a rarely seen balance, being mass-appealing enough to garner compliments, and having enough depth to keep even the most discerning of fragrance connoisseurs engaged for hours. Also, for those who care, it is a strong performer, comfortably lasting 12+ hours on my skin. And it does project enough to where people notice it quite easily, while still remaining subtle enough to be inoffensive. Definitely a must try for everyone, at least once, and something I am more than happy to have in my collection! (There will be a more detailed, overly verbose review of this to come at some point as well, but that isn't the idea of this project)

And the winner of my fragrance challenge is ....... The Merchant of Venice Arabesque . I needed one more bottle of something different compared to what I already have. I thought I could use a tobacco or oud type fragrance to round out my other 8 bottles. I consulted with frequent reviewer JustTheFactsMan , and asked for his favorites in the tobacco/oud genre or anything else that had non freshie aspects with great performance . I proceeded to buy 16 decants which you can see in my profile under the title "For Test". I know it's always a matter of personal taste but I made the late decision to involve my wife in this challenge. I presented to her only the ones I liked . There were several with some earthy or animalistic or over the top ashtray accord that went into the trash really fast. What I found , and Arabesque really displayed this, was a well blended mix of sweetness from the plum and the tobacco leaf is there but not the star of the show. It is a beautiful 3 season scent that dries down to something vanilla. In this challenge "in your face" tobacco just didn't do it for me and the other fragrances I evaluated (that had nothing to do with tobacco) were just not as good as Arabesque . Because of its good reviews and popularity , it's definitely one of the more expensive fragrances from this house. Out of 16 fragrances and with wife approval, it was the clear winner . Worthy of trying a decant and ,if you can afford it, a full bottle Update: Although this fragrance was truly the clear winner in my fragrance challenge, it turned out that my wife can't stand any tobacco perfume. Although I wear fragrances for myself, the fact is, I have to live with her and she has to be in the same house with me and that fragrance. I did round out my 10 fragrance collection with Dior Eau Sauvage Parfum and now everyone is happy.

If you’re into plum, Arabesque has this note done beautifully! I’ve blind bought this fragrance and I was hoping that this would be the case, after hearing about it on YT. Not disappointed at all!!! Addictive stuff... Obviously, this is a sweet, cherry piped tobacco fragrance at heart, but on me, the plum is almost equally strong. Gives the scent a generous amount of sweetness and fruitiness and offers a nice contrast against tobacco, ginger, cinnamon and tonka beans. It’s very warm feeling, delicious juice and does gives me a plum preserve vibe, as the previous reviewer mentioned. But I don’t mind it at all, I love that about Arabesque. Big fan of plums here... According to the Fragrantica reviewers, Arabesque is very close to Tom Ford’s Tobacco Vanille. I haven’t gotten my nose on Tom Ford’s perfume to be able to comment on that but if that’s true, I understand now why that scent is so hyped up after so many years since it has been released. As far as Arabesque goes, if you want a unisex, leaning feminine fruity tobacco scent with warm, soft spices, amber, vanilla, sweet, plummy nuances, you’ll not regret getting this one. It’s very smooth, well rounded and nicely balanced fragrance, has some depth and contrast between notes and accords, and comes in one of the most luxurious bottles and packaging. The entire Murano Exclusive Collection has exquisite packaging and Murano glass bottles, with heavy, metallic, golden caps. Sublime design and presentation!!! Performs very well, it’s not an overly strong scent but it’s long lasting and leaves a beautiful trail behind. And it’s a compliment getter, female colleagues were asking me what I was wearing a few days ago because I smell “delicious”!

To me this doesn't smell %100 like tobacco vanilla, I think Arabesque has less cloves which it turns out it made the blend way better and way smoother. To simplify how it smells, thinks if PDM herod and TF tobacco vanilla had a baby, yeah that baby is Arabesque. Its smoother and sweater version of TF tobacco vanilla, the sweetness comes from plums and benzoin. I wish the longevity is better but its just me because I like my perfume strong, Arabesque last for 5-7 hours and it projects only for 2-3 hours. To me Arabesque blended better than all of these. Boundless (Amouage) -----------Too much ginger and syrupy. Tobacco Vanilla (Tom Ford) ----Too much cloves and still creamy. Tobacco (Franck Boclet)--------- Too much cloves but good alternative! Tabac Rouge (Phaedon)-------- Too much honey and syrupy. Rating 9/10 Update: The more I wear this the more I believe it's not a clone of TF TV. Arabesque is different enough, I will say they are %30 different, yes both they are heading toward spicy vanilla kind of scent but Arabesque has creamy or maybe milky accord, not sure what is it! Another note I think its very prominent in Arabesque is almond, I feel almond is always there from the bargaining till the drydown, and the almond with other spices and the creaminess here it feels slightly dusty. The cloves in Arabesque is always there but not overpowering or a prominent note, just a supporting note. Update: It lasts on clothes for 2 days, yes that's insane longevity, I just ordered my bottle, so excited it's way better than TF tobacco vanilla. Definitely, there is an almond note but the company didn't mention it, that is normal many companies only release the main notes.

"Venetian regal class." I got a generous sample of this fragrance when I bought a full bottle of Helmut Lang Eau de Parfum from Die kleine Theatiner Parfümerie in Munich last December. Upon spraying on skin, I get similarities with my other two fragrances: Herod by Parfums de Marly, and Tabac Rouge by Phaedon. Looking through previous reviews, it's evident that Arabesque bears similarities with Herod and TR (a clone of Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford), but at the same time it's also distinctive in its own identity. On top of the tobacco and cinnamon notes, I get plum and tonka bean which to me render the fragrance very 'Guerlain-esque'. Whilst Herod and Tobacco Vanille are young in nature and simple in scent, Arabesque is classier and more sophisticated. It's an upgrade of the two; Herod and TV are cloying and overpowering at times, but Arabesque is more well-rounded, its scent hard to ignore yet inoffensive with its presence. It's a gorgeous scent worthy of its name. I would love to have a full bottle of it, and seeing how elusive the brand is makes it all the more fun to hunt it down again. Amazing all in all. edit: I notice that the plum-tonka bean scent is more prominent in the onset, but as it drys down it resembles Herod much more. This gradual change in notes is something I don't see in Herod or Tobacco Vanille, which is more simple and one-dimensional.

This is absolutely awesome. The notes are really telling the whole story here, in my opinion. It opens up with a blast of fruity spicies that really packs a punch. The plum note is by far the main player on my skin. It's a great combo of plum and cumarin. Tobacco is in the background on my skin, it brings a bit of harshness to the scent which really needs it because it's very sweet and fruity. The plum + creamy cumarin are the stars of the show, but are nicely balanced with tobacco, vetiver and cedar to make the scent paletable. Without these, it'd just smell like plum jam with spicies. This is perfectly unisex, you'd think it'd lean more masculine with the tobacco but no, it can fit both males and females very well. Incredible fragrance, that smells extremely high quality and is masterfully created. This brand has been a great discovery for me, I'll try to sample more. As for the comparisons with Tobacco Vanille, I can get them. But the scents are still very different in my opinion. I absolutely prefer this over Tobacco Vanille. The dry fruits in Tobacco Vanille are extremely recognizable and the plum accord here is far enough from it. They're in the same family, 100%, but they're different. EDIT : after a few hours, it smells way more like Tobacco Vanille.

The notes are spot on, except its missing that wonderful vanilla pod, at first wiff i missed it but it hides behinde the strong long lasting top notes Its a dry Gourmand, it lacks the sweetness off a Gourmand, the opening is dry tobacco and ginger heavy, cinnamon is use to support the main players but never steal the show, the plum is more like the natural fresh plum that acts to round out the powerful tobacco note. It shares the ginger/tobacco from its little brother TF Tobacco V, but it is more mature w its smaller twists and turns and dry opening. Ginger,Tobacco Hay,boozy plum, cinnamon Musk,heated vanilla,vetiver Drydown is a bit musky and the dominating notes stays on for the duration off the time, this is made by a very skilled artist, and its by no means a beginner perfume cause you will miss alot off the smaller details in what makes this a 10/10 perfume The crying Clown... The unsweet Gourmand Its a true unisex, leaning a bit more to the male side in the strong opening then its free for all

Updating my initial review from July 2025. It is now the end of April 2026. And for me, Arabesque is a real love. Arabesque's opening presents with a distinct note that approaches camphorous mintiness. I'm 1000% certain this lovely, green, herbaceous note is a combination of tobacco leaf and tonka bean. I sense some coumarin lurking in the background, coumarin a fragrance note I LOVE! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the perfume's opening. There's definitely spicy ginger, some cinnamon. The perfect, juicy plum note emerges. The skillful balance of plum, green tobacco leaf, tonka bean and everything else prevents Arabesque from morphing into just another silly, fruity, gourmand-leaning fragrance. Arabesque's development is wonderful. The base is lovely. The tobacco leaf smooths out and becomes ever-so-slightly less green, more floral. There's vetiver, some musk, woodiness and LOTS of benzoin (creamy vanilla) in the dry-down. As I've worn Arabesque regularly, the fragrance has really grown on me. I love the perfume!

To me this is not similar to Tobacco Vanille. The main notes I get in Arabesque are; tobacco, plum and cinnamon in a vanilla base. It's very powdery sweet, like powder marshmallow, but it's not juvenile because of the spicy cinnamon and tobacco aspect. This is the most perfect tobacco fragrance. I'd say this is feminine leaning unisex due to it's sweetness. The longevity is excellent 12+ hours and projection is above average. The sweet fruity cinnamon accord reminds me of Dolce Amalfi, but they differ in many other aspects, so I didn't vote for it in the reminds me of section. I'm glad this perfume is not very popular, it's just a hidden gem and I hope it stays that way. The bottle is a dream. It's a big love for me and I'm super happy to have her in my collection. Difference with TF Tobacco Vanille: TV to my nose is tobacco and honey. It also has an herbal base, something like Tea Leaf. The only similarity to me is the fact that they both have a sweet tobacco accord.

Oh... My... Word!!! I know I have used the word 'amazing' many times before when describing a perfume... I just wanted to use it again for this ridiculously delicious juicy, but to be honest... amazing simply would not suffice to describe this masterpiece! There's just no word to describe this heavenly deliciousness! I cannot exactly put into words the beauty and joy derived from smelling Arabesque. The overwhelming combination of tobacco leaves, sweet notes of plum, and frizzy ginger make the fragrance attractive at the very first hint of its head note. The heart note discloses a warm accord of cinnamon and cedar wood, both exalted by vetiver in the base note and further softened by a delicate white musk. For me, it's the perfect fall and winter fragrance. It exudes warmth, sensuality, and exquisite richness. This is soooooo expensive,... but I soooooo want a bottle of it now, I mean... DANG!!! This smells awesome, I need more than just a sample.

Disregard male or female marketing. This is truly a great spicy warm tobacco that uses plum to cut through the -dark scents. A very good mysterious scent. It develops very nicely over the skin and lasts 7-8 hours. The projection isn't too wide on me but movement does bring the fragrance alive very well. This is a very expensive scent so I ended up collecting all the sample vials of it and poured it in a decant bottle and created a 10 ml mini for myself. It is very oriental tobacco. Nothing chokes you but its presence is very tangible yet velvety like a reviewer described it below. The ginger here is very different to the ginger in Twilly D'hermes both presenting different aspects of it. Imagine someone who is wearing something in leather, smoked a cigar and is now enjoying a cup of Mexican hot chocolate is how I would describe the overall atmosphere this creates. Do give it a try, it is one of my prized possessions.

This fragrance is a master class on a sensual tobacco note. One of the best in my collection. The presentation of course is fantastic for any visual collector. The scent itself is beautifully blended and tells a story. On the opening the tobacco shines through almost immediately, but as it progresses into the dry down it becomes addictive with the more gourmand aspect of the fragrance. I'm unsure of how direct a correlation the skin chemistry has to do with it, but the dry down on my skin is an absolute seduction. Is the price tag a boundary not many are willing to cross? Sure. The closest rival seems to be about a hundred dollars cheaper. However, the quality and longevity are the trade off. Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille suffers the same fate many of the newer TF fragrances have (in my opinion): poor longevity.

This is a tom ford tobacco Vanille killer, I’m shocked at the pricing of this as well and the bottle presentation is killer. This fragrance last a long time and projects on me and will definitely get you noticed and compliments. It takes that Tom ford dna but lifts it up and rounds it out by taking out the annoying candle like quality that Tom ford has and amping up this deep rich vanilla that is very airy and addicting. Ive had Tom ford tobacco vanille before and it smells great but I always felt annoyed wearing it and more of a candle scent vs a fragrance. But arebesque has this addicting quality that makes me want to bite my arm off and I never get annoyed by it because it has an amazing cloud without ever feeling like it’s too much. Everytime I wear it, I get stoped and asked what one wearing

I just received this in a swap and this is the most beautiful delicious perfect fall winter perfume. It smells nothing like tobacco vanilla. This smells like plum pudding like sugar-coated braised plums, vanilla pudding with cinnamon I also get the smell that is in the atmosphere at Christmas time. It's hard to explain but this is very nostalgic to me. It smells like my house did when I was a kid and we would run to our living room to look at all of our presents under the tree. It smells like the food my mom cooked the gifts that were wrapped. It also would work for the fall because it's warm and inviting but also has that background note of crisp autumn leaves , it must be the vetiver? If you haven't tried this yet you need to get a sample. I feel very very lucky to have found this treasure.

I bought it because the bottle is beautiful and unique to be in my perfumes shelves. It turns out it smells unique too. In my nose, it is a sweet smoky ginger. What beautiful of this perfume is that it is blended so well, so there are no notes that is too dominant. I can still smell the ginger but it is not screechy or very strong, i know it's ginger because i can feel the warm and spicyness like u smell real ginger. The cinnamon is not prominent, but i think it adds the warm and spicyness too. u'll also feel enough sweetness maybe from the tonka bean and the plum. And the smokiness from tobacco leaves, it makes this perfume more arabian. Really, this is blended so beautifully, so aromatic.

Extraordinarily fascinating fragrance: The Merchant of Venice has been creating fragrances of the highest level, refined, intriguing, for very demanding smells for almost 10 years. The opening notes are deep, warm, voluptuous, a smoky vortex given by the tobacco leaf, which slowly leaves the scene to a delicate note of ripe plum, which is a silent emergence, which becomes intense over time, without appearing brazenly gourmand. The lively ginger is perceived in the blend, in accordance with the dusty, reassuring cinnamon. The musky and resin base makes this great fragrance enveloping, seductive, absolutely irresistible. Warm, elegant spicy sillage. Remarkable duration.

This fragrance is a LOVE! It is also occassion specific. Think dreary cold day or an cool evening. Not a bright scent. This is warm like a steamy cup of chai with extra milk foam and cream. Upon first blast, this is one to one with TF Tobacco Vanille. But that's like while initial 5-10 min. After is a spicier vanilla than TV more into the vanilla than the tobacco. Also- the tobacco in here has a hint just a hint of cherry that plays with a plum accord. I love TV but this one wins. The bottle is dope, scent lasts longer, projection is better. This is my first scent from this house but if quality continues like this? Won't be my last! 4.6 overall

Oh I yeah i agree this is nice, however i can't purchase it as i already own Oud Thameen by Lattafa which is an original creation of theirs. Smell a bit similar but the only difference is Arabesque opens up with plum included Oud thameen swaps out the plum for Bergamot, which makes it a bit brighter, fresher and jucier. Also have to consider the price point and performance. Oud Thameen is about $30 and can go between 6-8 hours, not sure what Arabesque performance is like since i only sampled it. Either way i think you get compliments from this fragrance genre as i've gotten several wearing OT.

New to fragrances so I’m not as eloquent in description... this was a blind buy... LOVE the bottle. But when I first smelled it, it smelled like anise or licorice to me... about an hour later I was left with a lovely tobacco scent that I have been searching for... I immediately re-sprayed to go through the scent profile again. I then got plum and ginger... I don’t know or think I smell the other notes, lol... but the dry down once again has my nose stuck to my wrist... love, love, love this one!
