Finally i bought this THIS IS MEN PERFUME TOOOOOO MASCULINE Let’s review this kind of nice Firstly, i tested the vintage version of Tuscan Leather for me it was little annoying let me to be clean it was nice too and heavy and rich but it was also too much heavy and hard to wear ! But what you get when you spray BYSANTIUM SAFFRON In the first 3 minutes was so nice and boozy and sweet and after 7 to 10 minuets booooooomb its leathery and nice very smooth the same as Tuscun Leather Wow so nice Great balance but it has something wrong with it the projection is so weak ! Byzantium Saffron smells exotic. The featured notes are saffron, indonesian patchouli leaf, crystal amber and white suede. The opening note of saffron in full glory with its leather and tobacco facets, rich and startling with its acrid bittersweet tones, almost knocks my head back. This is no country for the uninitiated perfume newbie. As I expect, the strong contrasts soon begin to dissipate and I can smell a soft rosy-suede floral note begin to emerge from the leather, sweetly spiced and enchanting. As this dries down to reveal the heart notes, patchouli leaf offers a green herbal depth, bolstering the musty-dusty spice effect of the saffron, then amber moves into to sweeten and soften this mix in the base. Byzantium Saffron becomes opulent and smooth as fine suede, rich and polished, exotic but familiar due to the roses, now in full bloom. After two hours, the scent on my arm is still aromatic and the amber is working its sweet-salty skin magic. The golden scent lingers for hours, and I’m amazed at the longevity of the star player, the saffron note, because the next morning, I still get hints of sueded amber on my skin. I sniff, then sniff again, then think that this would smell great on a man, too. Byzantium Saffron smells exotic, and expensive. It’s a scent from another land and another era when spices were prized acquisitions to one’s household. I sniff, then sniff again, then think that this would smell great on a man, too.

This is the one that broke my heart. I first smelled it back in 2015 while living in London. The notes were exceptionally well-balanced: the saffron was heavy and forward, the patchouli next, and an ever-so-slight hint of smoke of the suede. This was my perfect perfume, the one that would be my signature. Moving back to the US (Boston), I was determined to get a bottle, though MoV doesn't distribute in the US. I was able to have a full beautiful Murano-glass bottle brought to me from the Verona store. One spray, and I could tell that the perfume had changed. The saffron was nearly gone; the smokey leather was overwhelming. Not horrible, but not my 'perfect scent' anymore. I wondered - as did actually happen to me once with a different scent - whether I had a rancid or "off" bottle. Returning to London last summer, I brought a sample of my ByzSaff. Sure enough, my bottle is *not* wrong: the perfume smelled like its old self, in its old environment. Back to Boston, the smokeshow returned. In Verona last week, I brought a sample to see if the Italian air would change it back. Sure enough, the perfume at the MoV store in Verona, and mine, smell exactly the same, with the leather and smoke. Long story short: I would not have bought this perfume if it smelled in London like it does in Verona and Boston. Is it good? Yes. Is it the magical saffron I once knew? Not even close.

First things first: I am loving this scent. I have never been sure if I like saffron but I guess must. I have often been ambivalent about leather fragrances but in this case I’m hooked. ( I think this reminds me of Irish Leather by Memo but whereas that one makes me feel like I can’t pull it off, this one I wear with confidence.) Now, ready for the sad part of this story? No projection! Really, truly. My son sitting next to me in the car could not smell it until I stuck my wrist to his nose! So if you wear this it will be your own little treat for just you. But I’m fine with that. I get no lemon or rhubarb incidentally so don’t sample it for those notes. But if you want dry, sophisticated, slightly mysterious, then this might be your jam. Edit: I would like to say that my nose was defective earlier to miss the lemon in this. In fact it’s the lemon and leather that hang on for the long haul with this fragrance.

stinks like being escorted by your lady's companion through the bustling alleys of constantinople, the air thick from the stalls of the leather merchants displaying their wares and incense drifting down mosaic stairs as you quietly chatter and dodge through the crowd. the lemony punch at the beginning reminds me of the first bite of a deliciously saccharine lemonopita that leaves a sweetness that lingers. the metallic follow-up is particularly clear on my skin and at first the cold blade vibe threw me off, but it grew on me when it was warmed with the pepper and softened into submission by the florals. serves oracles, courtiers, jezebels, and middle-daughters of antiquity. definitely for work days spent in the collections basement of the museum.

If you are looking for something that reminds of smoky earthy Autumn, this is it. Last Autumn I searched at length for such a fragrance and had almost given up until a trip to Venice! There in the back streets of Venice on a small cobbled square, I stumbled upon this delightful local perfumery. Worth a visit for any perfume lover, everything so beautifully presented in Murano glass and a personal assistant to help you find your choice. Byzantium Saffron smells exactly as it sounds, an intoxicating, sultry, earthy, smoky, spicy mix with a hint of leather. Perfect for those Autumn/Winter days and nights. I find it a heavier perfume and quite long lasting but not overpowering with a dry down that is quite soft.

I was looking for a soft saffron fragrance. And this was a match! Exactly what I was looking for. I like saffron but I tend to find it too harsh and metallic sometimes. This opens very green and herbal + spicy. Then it settles down to a beautiful soft, kinda vintage leather scent. Later I get a very ambery drydown. All in all it’s not too sweet or cloying, it’s very well blended. The saffron note stays, but after a few hours it’s really faint. Minus point for longevity. It’s bit disappointing considering it’s a spicy leather fragrance. But I can live with that, its a beautiful perfume and I absolutely adore it!

Normally I am not into suede or leathery fragrances but this one is a winner for me. There is lots of luxury suede softened by the saffron, amber and patch. There is almost as much saffron as suede. The three notes magically combine to feminize the suede (I think Ive made a new word!) If youve normally steered clear of any leather or suede fragrances then I advice you give this a go and be prepared for a pleasant surprise. It doesnt develop much on me but the suede definitely dominates even to the end. Both moderate sillage and longevity.

I think we're all done with those feminine-masculine categorizations. Byzantium Saffron is a beautiful suede-saffron combination for everybody who appreciates/seeks for soft leather. I'm not impressed by longevity or projection, but quality and gender neutrality are there. It's not completely non-sweet leather perfume, suede is additionaly softened by amber. I very much like the presence of patchouli, wishing it was even stronger. Nice option for those who like Tom Ford White Suede but find it too musky and fleeting.

Pungent and mysterious... a scent that tastes old, an amber crystal heart. Feel like entering an ancient monastery,it is a unique atmosphere. Elegant and attractive, there is a smoky quality in this fragrance that makes it extremely mystical and very beautiful. I like it a lot,and the bottle deserves a lot! :) Sillage: 8./10 Longevity: 8.5 / 10 Scent: 9./10 Overall: 9./10

I can smell mild leather / suede here, sweetness. After that, less saffron and maybe even thyme (very mildly greenish-bitterish). But that's all. I don't know how those other notes do anything but maybe they don't have to be distinguishable. The scent overall is very good anyway!

Spice and sweetness from flowers hit me before leather does. It's a balance I'm really enjoying. I'd wear this in autumn or winter all day, and at night all year long.

I reviewed a couple years ago but I am returning to say this has been one of my most satisfying full bottle purchases overall. So glad I have not gotten tired of it.

This perfume smells like a cleaner version of Tom Ford's White Suede, of course this means that its projection is not on the same level. I feel that it is an ideal perfume for a romantic cozy date, where the aroma of this perfume arrives thanks to those small airs of the night. The predominant notes throughout the duration of the perfume are saffron and suede, something that makes it very sexual. at times you have the cedar that makes it masculine and in others the lilacs, the rubardo feels sparkling but only at times, the end of the patchouli is something that gives that boost to the suede in the final part of the perfume. The duration on my skin is approximately 8 hours with medium projection. If it has a resemblance to Tuscan Leather or Ombre Leather but I feel more crafty, it has that similarity but only in a few moments. This perfume house seems to me to be a good concept of niche perfumery, not so crowded like Le Labo, their versions of trendy perfumes but with better quality and changing some notes, their boutiques in Venice are beautiful and the presentation of the fragrances (bottles and packaging) is something that should be take note several niche houses, because now they are increasingly simple, almost like commercial perfumes. And for the price everything matters with niche fragrances, I want to feel that same elegance and luxury that I can smell, but in a tangible and visual way I think this fragrances are a great souvenir when you visit Venice. I will continue testing more fragrances from the merchant of Venice.

Soooo... This is a fragrance I've wanted to try for ages for several reasons. 1) I'd love to own ANYTHING from this house as the bottles are lovely. 2) I LOVE saffron. 3) They seem to have a respectful, niche pedigree. Maybe that's the wrong word, certainly a perceived respectability as far as I can tell. 4) I've seen this one in particular at very reasonable prices at online discount retailers. Firstly, don't let the Tuscan Leather comparisons put you off, not only the fact that TL is a decent and popular fragrance and that might be wholly appealing to you, but because it's not a copy. It's strikes you as a 'TL lite' to begin with, but for me doesn't have anywhere near the nose wrinkling WTF'ness or 'raspberry' note people often describe. This is generally drier, thinner, woodier and as it dries down becomes more prominent (in a subtle way) with saffron. I like the way it evolves but it's likely to always live in the shadow of the more boombastic end of this type or sub genre of fragrance. I actually think it would be less full on or potentially annoying than TL, but that also mean it's not as rich, or big a statement piece and not as strong or long lasting either. I see this as a trade off, if you even want to make direct comparison which would be obvious (and all I've done so far in this review) but refrain if you can and accept this for the fragrance it is. I enjoyed it.

The suede and cedarwood wrap around it like embroidered fabric - plush, polished, quietly opulent. As it settles, the amber and patchouli take over, turning everything warm, golden, and slightly smoky - like incense drifting through a palace corridor. Vanilla softens the edges, giving the dry-down a gentle sweetness without tipping into dessert territory. It’s sweet, but not sugary; floral, but not girly; spicy, but not loud. It’s the kind of perfume that feels like a story rather than a scent. Byzantium Saffron is saffron silk, amber glow, suede‐soft petals, a whisper of spice, a quiet, regal confidence. It doesn’t scream for attention. It radiates. It smells like someone who owns antiques and knows exactly which dynasty each piece survived. If you want a saffron fragrance that’s elegant rather than abrasive, opulent rather than heavy, and quietly hypnotic rather than loud, this one is a beautifully woven tapestry.

Saffron is hard. I was hoping for a really barnstorming luxe-spice frag that was distinctive enough to really stand out, and this didn't quite get there. It's very pleasant indeed, but from the notes (and the price, even with a hefty discount) not as overwhelmingly lush as I expected, or even demanded. The saffron is really perceptible at the beginning, and it's lovely and warm and organic - but yeah, this is basically a very upscale leather frag with some beautiful detailing, but which is still a bit underpowered for where it needs to go. The leather (even though it's real classy, natural, well-behaved well-tanned suede, nothing rougher) does predominate throughout. Pretty linear on me, too - I wish I got the opulent journey some reviewers here describe, but for me its 'development' is really just a slow fade of the saffron vs everything else. Overall longevity not great on me either - 4 to 5 hours max and it's completely gone. So: never less than nearly-excellent, but it still left me slightly underwhelmed. Worth a go if you're a leather completist, or want something very specifically saffron-heavy. (If you're only after saffron and can live without leather, though, give Korres Amber Saffron Cardamom a go - far cheaper and with similar levels of performance.)

The opening is bitter. Saffron and suede. In the background thyme and cedar. There are glimpses of lemon, but barely. It is not sweet. There is also far away earthy patchouli and black pepper without it being spicy. Rounding it up there is amber. I cannot wait for the heart. I can sense it with lily and lilac that accentuate the suede. Saffron is under suede domination. With the floral heart, it sweetens and one can even feel hints of rhubarb coloring the lily red. It reads winter and autumn to me. Day and night. The opening is harsh but gives the emerging sweet, floral heart an edge. It might be interesting also in spring. In style it reminds me a bit of Hermes creation. The aura it creates around me is pretty, and very lily with a lilac backing. Sweet and intoxicating. The saffron and suede notes deepen the impression. The first minutes made me worried, but after all, a fragrance needs to be good during the day of wear not to smell good only in the opening. Byzantium Saffron is a baby swan, growing to become the white beauty. When outside I noticed the scent changed to lemon and cedar creating a refreshing blend. Especially with thyme background. It changes during wear which I like. Many hours of wear and the scent reminds me of champagne.

This goes beyond a classic saffron–leather pairing. While those two notes clearly dominate, patchouli and floral nuances; especially lilac and lily; add depth and a soft, almost velvety contrast. It brings to mind Suede et Safran by Nishane, yet feels noticeably more wearable, with fewer sharp edges and a smoother overall flow. Longevity and sillage are both excellent, giving the composition a strong presence without feeling abrasive. I think this has a beautiful leather scent-like supple beautifully tanned leather. I have Liberty which I would like except for the heavy smoke accord. This to me is Liberty without the smoke. I generally do not like a savory oud/ambroxen/amber-in fact I can't stand it. This does not give that for me. I really like it and find it unisex for anyone who isn't looking for something sweet. I get some spice and some powder. My only disappointment is that it really doesn't last long though it can be had for a good price on Jomashop if you don't mind re-applying every two to three hours.

To me it smells like a mix of Tuscan Leather from TF and Widian London. It's very soft and pleasant but similarly to London, quite linear and gets boring after a while. Projection is solid but it definitely lasts less than 8 hrs both on me and my wife. There is also some weird note that gives me kind of old school vibes which in my eyes makes this perfume more fitting for a 50+ person rather than someone young. I do like it in general but if I had properly tested this on my skin, I wouldn't have bought it. For me it's just not interesting enough for a full bottle purchase.

Leathery fruitiness like PDM Godolphin, but this has more going on with dried flowers and saffron. It's definitely a comparable and cheaper alternative to similar scents like Tuscan Leather and PDM. I find that the comparison with oranges or gourmand is not on point - more like a fresh oriental saffron/leather scent, touch of floral tartness enveloped by amber. Performance is very good as compared to others of the brand and lasts 8 hours through sleep.

رغم حداثة هذه الدار الا انها ابتكرت عطور جيده وتستحق الاقتناء وقد اقتنيت هذا العطر بعد ان جربته في احد المعارض جلود بشكل لطيف جدا .. مع الزعفران الذي كان اكثر لطافه العطر بمجمله لا اتوقع ان ينفر منه احد فلا هو طاغي بفوحانه.. ولا بحدة رائحته اي انه برأيي من العطور المحايده كرائحه لا تفوّتوا تجربته.. قهو مميز للأمانه محبي عطور الجلود الخفيفه اللطيفه.. هذا العطر ينتظركم الثبات والفوحان.. جيده 8.5/10

This really is not my thing, it came in a set I have of 6 mixed 4ml vials, I can appreciate the niche high end ingredients but it smells like fire or some kind of burnt tobacco on my skin and on my clothes like I've walked past a blazing bonfire. Why anyone would want to smell like that is beyond me but maybe it's just my chemistry and amateur nose.

This is quite interesting. I am not into leather nor oud, but this is a pleasant scent.

This is a blind buy. Simply because it was a beautiful bottle. Also I have been to Venice twice and enjoyed my stay there. The packaging is beeeaautiful. It comes in a box with a map inside and a few printed sentenced about the history of Venice. The Murano Glas is STUNNING. This alone was worth the 50€ I spent on 50ml. But now to the fragrance itself. To be frank, it's not my favorite. The initial first spray was earthy, herbal and medicinal. I get the Thyme immediately, accompanied by a sharp pepper. No citrus whatsoever, which would've lifted the scent up. Saffron is woven throughout the scent evolution and it's pleasant, well made! Although listed, you barely - of any - perceive the other florals. I love Lily, but it's faint. No lilac. And especially no rhubarb, which we all know to be a fresh, tart and uplifting component. After like 45 minutes the dense opening gives space to the leather. To me it's darker than suede smells like, not offensively like fresh from a tanner, yet a tad animalic. As the scent progresses you clearly perceive the vibrating earthy Patchouli, enhanced through amber vibes. Do I like this scent? Well, yeah, but I would probably layer it with something brighter. Byzantine Saffron feels Goth. Historic, something from a past time. As someone who oversprays to suffocate my surroundings, this perfume certainly hasn't the best performance. The first 20 minutes it's a dusty arms length radiation and quickly does down to skin scent. Sillage is fleeting and longevity like 6hours on skin max. I get the storyline of this perfume and it does remind me of the old architecture in Venice. I get the vibe and the history. Yet to me it's a special occasion scent, like for a museum visit. If you're gothy or a bondage type of person, you may like to try this one out! Other than that, I enjoy the bottle and have it in my collection to look at.

the saffron is very strong, the leather and lemon too. I think it would smell nice on a male, but on girls it's not a hit. It's a perfume for a night out in a club, to get a girl while you drink something orange. I have a problem with The Merchant of Venice. while all their scents are sold as gourmand, they smell quite cheap to me. like a body splash from a pharmacy but with a gourmand hit. It's not a bad perfume, but it's not what you would expect for it's price. the longevity of this one is better compared to others from the brand.

as always with this brand , the opening is nice with a pungeant smoky soft leather and a tiny touch of safran ...and then? yes that's all...no evolution , the leather is alredy a suede without real depth or inflections after 5 min on skin. At least this one lasts a bit...maybe the less bad of all the brand.

smells like a car seat on a hot day with a hint of grandma

Byzantium Saffron opens beautifully with saffron and a gorgeous, slightly minty, wet leather. Unfortunately the leather dries down quickly as a cloying sweetness rears its head, takes over, and turns suffocating. The thyme can be felt as a suggestion at the very back, but adds no herbal freshness. Likewise, there’s no bright rhubarb either. Not even florals can be made out, as Byzantium Saffron turns into a nondescript blend of cloying and uninspired women’s designer perfume, complete with the wet wipes alcohol. I cannot comment on ultimate longevity as I finally washed this off myself after 5 hours, already defeated with a horrendous headache that lodged itself in my right eye socket, the side I sprayed this on. Nothing remotely special, including the headache.

A sales representative suggested Byzantium Saffron to me after discovering that I enjoy amber-centred fragrances. This is not an amber dominant fragrance per se, but it does feature a rich, slightly sweet amber accord. Byzantium Saffron is predominantly saffron, suede, pepper and patchouli. Byzantium Saffron is very strong in the opening, and somewhat abrasive. I didn't enjoy this fragrance straight off the bat, but once settled, the scent became much more appealing to my nose. The sales representative listed Byzantium Saffron as one of her personal favourites as the scent is unique and surprising, a blend of notes that many wouldn't expect. I agree that this fragrance is not your standard "run of the mill" scent. The suede accord alongside the spicy, slightly sweetened blend of saffron, pepper, patchouli and amber is quite sensual on the skin. Despite the richness of this composition, it also has a hint of freshness, and could potentially be worn on a warm Summer's evening in addition to the colder months. Sadly, despite numerous beautiful creations from The Merchant of Venice, their lasting strength leaves much to be desired. This brand is known for its poor, lacklustre longevity. Byzantium Saffron opens with a gigantic sillage cloud to fade very quickly into an intimate fragrance, and to last a disappointing few hours on skin. As a mid-range niche fragrance, I do expect better quality in regards to lasting power.

Byzantium Saffron by The Merchant of Venice Notes: Saffron Patchouli Amber Suede Dark, sultry, smoky, exotic Oriental perfume. The patchouli provides the saffron flower with qualities that other notes would have given it like benzoin or myrrh style incense and smokiness. The suede gives it a touch of musk and leather. It's an elegant leather. Sophisticated and formal. It conjures up images of Veneto or the Venice ruled by the Doges of Renaissance Italy. The powerful Venetian men would have smelled like this. This turned very masculine very quickly. This is a unisex fragrance for men who want an Oriental fragrance and for women who don't mind the strong "men's cologne" type of scents such as leather/suede, and tons of patchouli. It's aromatic, it's mysterious. It is a linear scent so you get all the notes within the first few minutes. There is very little progression as there is no top middle or base notes. The scents fill my senses and make me feel very regal and mysterious. I can see myself wearing this one at a masquerade wearing a handmade authentic Venetian mask. Very sexy.

loving it! A nice opulent unisex ( for those who dare) leathery, amber sweet-ish scent that needs some air and time to develop. love the opening; baroque-esc big boom of long ago Italian noblesse. who ever ́s been in Venice knows maybe the opulence of buildings, fabrics, bold colors and smells. The dry down settles everything in place and it wears like a luxurious velvet cloak A lovely "new" direction of perfume for men after all the oud, wood and tabac. I ́m happy i did not buy the MDCI Paris, cuir garamante for 195.00 euro. 50 ml in a lovely bottle and package cost me 80 euro and i like it even more then the MDCI....happy happy. They also sell 4 different perfumer kits. 2 base fragrances with an extra 6 diff. scents to mix and match your own perfume. WHAT a great idea!! I will get that next time....( prob. sooner than my wallet allows me too) grin.

Oh my, I'm in love! Very strong suede and saffron, then some sweet-ish amber - I don't really get the patchouli (thankfully, not a fan). The suede and saffron last for hours on end, they're still prominent (yet never cloying or penetrant) after 6 hours on my skin. The amber is very nicely balancing out the harshness of the suede, but it's so well mixed it doesn't draw attention to itself as it often does in our fragrances. As Marcjanssen said below, this needs quite a bit of time to develop; for me it properly settles after an hour or so. The notes may read simple but boy is this well executed! I'd say it's definitely unisex, leaning towards masculine in my opinion (I'm a woman and am praying I'll be able to pull it off in public).

Totally hypnotic! Spicy Saffron and suede, and that before I checked the notes. A soft, creamy leather,beautiful! There is sweetness from Amber and something Smoky, I detect Incense at the background, the patch is very faint or well blended within the composition....I do detect a Smoky element, it could be from resins and patch. This is so exotic, takes you back to the Byzantine times and the mixing and mingling of Cultures, tastes and ideas. This is a scent that is very vibrant, exotic and sensuous. Totally unisex, long lasting and ferociously projecting. Addictive too.... This is a mighty brand, will keep an eye on.

I said I wouldn't try any more leather in perfume... I received this among other samples from this brand together with a scent I ordered. I can only be thankful to be given the chance to try this genius combination between safron, amber and leather with a hint of patchouli. I always wondered how would safron blend in a scent?! Well... perfectly. My skin loves this fume! And I do too. Unisex despite the gorgeous red bottle. Spring, autumn, maybe winter suited. I can't say much about longevity and sillage yet. Thank you "Merchant of Venice"!

Me and my friend just tried this at the same time, on me it smells like leathery saffron but the thyme is very prominent. I like it, its a unique scent. On my friend it smells like, as she put it, "I SMELL LIKE A SECONDHAND LEATHER PURSE" and to be honest, she absolutely does. It smells like a wet or moist old leather purse that someone left a mint in, and the mint became one with the inner lining and well. Thats about it. So yeah, it is quite interesting and id recommend everyone to try it before purchase.

The notes were wonderfully well-balanced, with the saffron being the most prominent, followed by patchouli and an ever-so-slight trace of smoke from the suede. Byzantium Saffron is a lovely suede-saffron combo for everyone who values and loves supple leather. Byzantium Saffron smells precisely like what it sounds like: seductive, sensual, earthy, smokey, spicy, with a hint of leather. Ideal for Autumn and Winter days and nights. It's a richer perfume that lasts a long time on me.

Suede and Saffron. among all their fragrances i remember the seller told me this is the best selling amongst the whole line in that shop. i can really smell the fine suede shades of pink and paige, and i guess i can smell the similarity with the kind of suede in Tom of Finland by ELd'O, i got that similarity since the first spray. it's quite good.

This is hands down my least liked blind buy, ordered in 2023. Although I have given it a number of chances through most of the seasons, according to my verdict, it is a repelling fragrance of lower quality leather with a somewhat sweeter dry down. Now, sorry to say, used as an air freshener in a lovely bottle!

Boy was that first spray a strong waft of leather. But it mellows out quite a bit as it dries. The saffron kind of plays in the background and the lemon and thyme add the *slightest* medicinal quality to me. It’s a lot more fresh than I expected this composition to be. Definitely unisex and feels like money

The opening of this fragrance is very peppery, then you can start smelling leather, thyme, wood and lemon. It is interesting but tbh it reminds me of the leather shoes/jackets that are bought in Chinese stores. Not my cup of tea

Don't waste your money on any of newer batches (2017 & Newer..) Why? Because it has been horribly watered down. The saffron is has been brutally murdered and won't last you 30 mins after the initial spray.

I totally get a smokey note from this and I dont like it :( if it wasnt for that note.. I believe this fragrance is for the category 40 and up and it can be worn by men and women
