Forest Lungs

I blind bought this bottle on pre-order because I liked the concept so much. Thankfully, this turned out to be a good decision. The opening of this is very strange, and I am still trying to put my finger on what it is. It has a certain funk to it, and I honestly don't love it, but don't hate it either. It is a rooty, earthy, ancient funk. However, this fades pretty fast and it becomes more and more enjoyable every minute it is on. This is a very dry, smokey, earthy forest scent. I was expecting more green, pine, lushness- this is not that. I get mostly vetiver, cedar, and resin with a smoke/incense background. Perhaps it the title and the green bottle, but this does not read as green to me. More like a resinous orange-brown. I do feel it is calming and anxiety decreasing as marketed, but I also feel this way about any good fragrance. The science behind the product is interesting. Per their website: "Inspired by the concept of ‘medicalizing nature’, FOREST LUNGS uses olfactory chemistry and patented technology to replicate the molecular compounds produced by trees, phytoncides. Phytoncides are credited for the positive health benefits associated with forest bathing, namely stress reduction, anxiety reduction and boosting the parasympathetic (rest) nervous system." I have only worn this a handful of times, but I enjoy it more with each wearing, and it reveals more subtleties each time. The longevity is surprisingly long for me, and the projection is pretty strong, albeit in a subtle way. I would recommend that anyone interested in natural, woody, earthy scents to give this a try. Sample before buying if possible.

This is so pleasant and unique, a great unisex fragrance which doesn’t lean on including a sweet/feminine note in order to balance out masculine notes- or vice versa. It has its own androgyny which I really like about it. It can be very sharp at the opening, and come across as almost straight-up evergreen resin, but once it dries down a bit the more complex incense, citrus, woody and smoky notes really shine. This was one of my first perfumes and the only issues I have with it are that I wish it were more suitable to the warmer months, and that I’m overall not a fan of Nue Co’s greenwash-y/mental health-focused copywriting since I think it’s best to just let fragrances be what they are to each person. It was perfect for New England Autumn/Winter- the ideal blend of uplifting, cool, and smoky incense. To me, it evokes the smell of your jacket after a long walk through a forest on a cool overcast day, maybe with the addition of sitting by a campfire for a bit and chopping wood, and the smell lingering on your hands after squeezing resinous evergreen needles between your fingers. I think the name suits it perfectly. I do think where many people have a hard time with this one is they may be expecting something more evocative of deciduous/warm weather, luscious rainy woods. This isn’t that... it is a drier, cool northern winter fragrance. Since I got this, I’ve been searching for months for a comparable scent that I can use during California Summers because it takes on a very heavy quality in the heat which makes it overpowering and hard to handle so if anyone has recommendations...?

Wow this stuff is overhated lol. Another one to my pine-DNA journey and think it smells amazing. I just can’t help but have the feeling that it has bad performance though. Here goes hope that i‘m wrong. Edit: Glad that i was wrong. It lasts but the projection is fairly weak. I dont mind but it's worth noting. Great fragrance with good longevity and below average projection. Edit: for those interested in realistic conifer/pine fragrance like me. This one is fairly light and very perfume like and not „realistic“ like the artisnal stuff from pineward or things like pine by stora skuggan. It does have those elements but feels way lighter in general. Keep that in mind.

To me this just smells like pine needles and incense and I love it. This fragrance does a great job of making me feel like I’m in a pine forest. I don’t believe the functional fragrance stuff the company is promoting and I don’t necessarily feel calmer when smelling this. Nevertheless this is still a fantastic scent that’s great for any season. 9/10

Forest Lungs is one of the most unique fragrances I have tried. It opens with a burst of fresh pine and green notes that immediately evoke the feeling of walking through a forest after rain. The scent is natural, calming, and very different from typical sweet or designer fragrances

This is incredible. I got it for my fiance, and it's like By The Fireplace but more wearable and more complex. A not-overbearing smokiness, woods, the distinct smell of pine without being astringent, warm cozy benzoin, and I pick up a little bit of sweetness somewhere

I don’t get pine at all from this, unless the reviewers mentioning smelling pine mean burning pine, because all I get is smoke, and a lot of it. It’s not bad, I like it a lot, it’s actually really comforting, but, it should’ve been named Forest Fire, not Forest Lungs.

Got a sample of it and wasn't too impressed at first. It was good, but I tried a few other samples before coming back to it. Each time I put it on, I liked it a bit more. I've now purchased a bottle and it's my favorite scent.

A very green, woody & natural scent. This is seriously strong stuff as well, it lasts the whole day for me. 7.5/10

Woody, spicy, an interesting aromatherapy/minty aspect. Smells like healing in the forest they kind of nailed it.

It reminds me of the incense shops my parents used to take me to. Like a curtain of crystals and jewellery.

Opens slightly smokey damp forest, less like pine and more like hinoki/cypress wood. Smoke dies off fast and I am left with a warmness from the benzoin and a woody damp vetiver, and there is something fresh and resinous...the pine finally making its appearance. Meditative and soft, close to capturing an element of forest, but still not quite the forest scent I have been looking for (Winter Nights, Cape Heartache, Hinoki, Arso etc. all close but not quite a forest). The search continues. Reminds me of CdG Hinoki and like that scent the bubble is smaller, but lasts much longer. I would take this over Hinoki.

I bought Functional Fragrance when it came out and was quite impressed by the calming fragrance. So when Forest Lungs came available I immediately bought it as well. This time I’m kind of surprised because I thought it would be more like a hike in the woods, but it’s not as green as I thought. In fact it reminds me of Black by Comme des Garçons. It has the same liquorice like quality to it. Quite dark and spicy and lucky for me I love that! After a while it mellows into a nice atmospheric scent that lingers in the room. More subtle and fresh with a touch of green.

While the opening does have a piney green accord, it also has a nice, mulchy, earthy undertone that I quite enjoy. It's not as green or fragrant as I was expecting, but that's a good thing since I prefer earthy accords over green ones. There's a subtle hint of burnt wood embers way in the background, but to me, it's not detectable unless you're really focused on analyzing the individual notes. Sadly, it doesn't last long. Within 4 hours, even the skin scent is essentially undetectable. I'd like more time to study this.

This is pleasant if somewhat un-evocative -- at first. It's pine and resins with a squeeze of bright citrus, a combination I like very much, but there's little else to it initially. As it settles, the woods and resins assert themselves more, and it becomes really cozy while also being fresh and alive. It's one of those rare cases where I prefer the later stages. That said, I do prefer Lush's Fresh As as far as pine scents go; the orris of that one adds a distinction that's simply missing here.

This is a super unique scent. I have been going through green, forest kind of scents lately. I Am Verdant by Vyrao and Dirty Hinoki by Heretic. This one is less green. Very smoky and oaky. It does lean a bit male, but once it dries down it is more unisex. I don’t like patchouli and fortunately that note is weak. I get no bergamot at all. Lots of pine and smoke. I’m going to hang on to this until fall. This feels like it would be more appropriate for colder weather.

Smells like nutmeg as it first opens. Then like pine needles, but the pine needles are burning. The greenery goes away quickly - in a couple of minutes - and you are left with smoke. Burning forest. Forest fire. Not at all what I was expecting from something called 'Forest Lungs,' but it isn't bad. If you can adjust your expectations it's actually quite enjoyable.

I agree that this smells like sauna - hot, wet wood, evasive citrus. It is smoky, which is rather pleasant, it can feel too sweet in warmer weather though. I enjoy it a lot during winter, it is very comforting and cozy. But brands should definitely stop marketing wood smells as 'forest', I've expected the smell of a fresh Christmas tree.

Reminds me of Hinoki Meditation, both have forest and incense scent. This perfume isn’t overpowering to me, which I love because often times I feel wood notes can give me a headache. This really does smell like a lush forest retreat.

This is a heavy, incense, dank, earthy, pine scent. It smells like you went out in the woods and chopped down a tree. I enjoy it for what it is, but it’s hard to wear.

I love this. It smells delicious - smokey, piney goodness. I wouldn't consider this unisex though - very masculine.

LOL This smells like Sichuan pepper, which is not unpleasant. It just makes me think about Chinese foods.

The picture I get is a wet, burned down, still smoldering forest. They should have called it “Burning Forest” or “Black Forest Lungs”. I love the concept, but in reality it is different from what they describe. It’s not green, lush and foresty at all. I can’t say if it is calming as I have only used a couple sprays from a sample. The concept vs the actual scent to me are kind of a cruel joke; how can “forest lungs” and “smoke” go together? The the notes communicated are misleading. The most prominent note to my nose is not listed, which is birch tar (or cade). This gives it a smoky character. The greenest note you get in the opening; a high-pitch sweet pine note, which indeed smells a bit like fresh cut parsley. It fades within 30 seconds. You’re left with a warm, dry, smoky woods scent that stays close the skin, although it does project. I don’t get all the other notes as it remains lineair after the opening. No bergamot, cedar, vetiver or patchouli. The scent falls in the category of fragrances like Black by CdG and Patchouli 24 by Le Labo due to its smoky and dense quality. The drydown of FL is similar to the one of Black, although less sweet. I understand some people compare it to HWYL by Aesop, they are a like in character, but not the same scent. HWYL is mossy which FL is not. Also it reminded me a little of Burning Barbershop by DS&Durga since Forest Lungs somehow has a shaving cream vibe combined w smoke. I did get a full bottle, but luckily with a sample so I am going to give it some time by forgetting the concept and just focusing on the scent itself. I’m leaning towards returning it though as I don’t like the old man’s cologne shaving cream smell. Such a shame, the concept is so good. Why o why the birch note, it leaves me puzzled. I guess nowadays smoke and forests go together due to global warming and the many forest-fires. It’s sad.

So I got this fragrance as a sample. To me it’s a wanna be clone of Aesop Hwyl. Hwyl is one of my favorite fragrances and it does this forest scent much better. Forest lungs is a green/natural spa scent. Basically Hwyl but without the smoke/damp earth. Forest lungs is cheaper than Hwyl but isn’t as good. I have tried forest lungs and the other fragrance they make that’s a wanna be Santal 33. There’s nothing special about this brand other than the cool marketing they put out on social media.

A strong, woody, resinous fragrance. The comment below mine said it reminded them of an incense shop and that was my first thought upon smelling this scent! There’s an element that’s smoky. To my nose, it becomes fresher as the wear time goes on. Masculine leaning.

Chopped parsley in a moist forest on the opening. Silage and projection are just ok, but the perfume has great lasting power. The parsley type top note dissipates and leaves behind sweet pine and vetiver. It's beautiful and earthy, perfect for both men and women.

Smoky, woody, very resinous, a little salty. Dried down to a masculine cinnamon/moss sort of a thing. My husband found it actively offputting.

I won't make any claims about the science behind the 'phytoncides' and the claimed health benefits of these chemicals, but the scent profile is rather challenging. It smells like a hot sauna or freshly cut pine, with a hint of spiciness. It's resinous without being sickly; spa-like yet masculine. I don't object to it, but I certainly wouldn't buy a bottle.

I got a sample of this because the name and copywriting made me hopeful that it would capture the feeling of pausing mid-hike to take in a deep lungful of cool, forest-scented air. Instead, like others have said, this is a smokey, dry mess. I don't know about you, but every time I've smelled smoke in the woods, that's been a bad thing.

I haven't taken enough time to properly review this fragrance. Yes, it has pine, wood smoke, resins and that's all very nice. But, I am put off by the cumin smell and probably won't get past it, unfortunately. I also do not get the calming experience. Maybe I'd enjoy it more on somebody else.

Very weak on me, I almost couldn't smell it at all! Relaxing? Pff... pure(excusez moi) BS!! Marketing and lies to get your €£¥$₩. Try taking a walk to your nearest park or forest, you'll 1- exercise 2- RELAX 3- save money!

Strange there is no listed cassis note (blackcurrant leaf) or eucalyptus note because those notes can both smell like eau de chat and this smells really strongly of that.

I'm not sure how but this smells like an old hospital...

I thought the general idea here was to reflect forest bathing. What I'm getting instead is forest fire. The house bills this scent as "anti-stress" and "relaxing". Ok, I'd buy that if it was conjuring up hygge images of sock feet in front of a stone fireplace, but instead we are presented with "forest", "lungs", and smoke. All I can envision are little forest creatures running for their lives. Actually anxiety-producing.

I was really excited to try this based on the marketing but it fell really flat. It smells like a campfire. I was expecting a lot more fresh pine notes but just got burnt wood instead.

Stuff is gross. There's a horrible cat piss smell throughout I'm not sure what it is but I'm glad I just tried a sample.

Forest Lungs from The Nue Company is somewhat similar to Dasein’s Winter Nights or Norne from Slumber house in its conjuring of coniferous evergreen midnight splendor. The birch tar and pine sap are present but softer, less sharp and astringent than you might expect, and as a matter of fact, I don’t get any of the camphoraceous herbal medicine chest opening that you find in the other two. It's the whiff of the woodlands in your hair or clothing after you're already back inside. It’s expediently atmospheric; you don’t have to brave the forest path to get to the witch's hut to warm your hands at the softly crackling fire and have a cozy cup of gently spiced cardamom tea. You’re just plopped right at her table, like a witch's hut holosuite. And then you find out that this person is actually not a witch at all, you've made a lot of assumptions based on their haunted cottagecore aesthetic. It's actually just a local misanthrope fed up with the dumbass yokels in the village so they gathered up their amazing candle collection and moved to a hermitage in the middle of a forest and all of a sudden they’re like," who even are you and why are you in my house?? GTFO!" And that’s when you realize this wonderful fragrance does not last long at all and the program has ended and your're back in Quark's bar and he wants his 2 strips of gold-pressed latinum.

I guess i was expecting this to be either a sort of "humid" lush forest; or, possibly, leaning towards campfire. More fool I bc this was a blast of CUMIN and nutmeg, inexplicably. It mellowed down to a dry pine aftershave that was nice, but not worth the initial taco seasoning phase. I guess cedar can be spicy smelling, sometimes, but this was just cumin and dry wood. I got no citrus. Hell I got no "forest". If there was any cedar it was co-opted. I'm not rating this because it could be a skin chemistry thing, idfk lol.

It's smokey and cozy and I love spraying it on my pillow or sweater before snuggling up in bed or next to a fire in the winter. It smells more like being in a log cabin than being in the forest. It doesn't smell like nature, it smells like a nice perfume. This was the first fragrance I ever bought, I totally fell for their marketing and felt fooled when I realized it's just a perfume. Buy it because you like the notes and how it smells, not because of its marketing as a functional fragrance!

Interesting! Dark, earthy, piney. I agree that on first blast this is sharp and mildly off putting. But I’ve had it on for 10 minutes now and there’s a smooth head shop, metaphysical shop once it melts into my chemistry. Almost an incense quality. I agree it would be hard to pull off, however, I love that the cedar here doesn’t go hamster cage chips on me. And even though I own over 500 bottles of perfume, nothing I have smells like this...

An airy version of Hwyl. On paper it very similar to the before mentioned. On my skin it’s way more airy. Almost has the smell of cold celery to me, mixed with Hwyl. Not very long lasting. A good scent overall and different enough if you’re a wood lover.

I LOVE this scent- smokey, incense-y, woody and root-y thanks to the wonderfully astringent vetiver. The forest breathes! I guess most people would call Forest Lungs masculine, but it suits the tomboy in me just as well.

hard to explain this, but the smell reminds me of the soap that they have at hospitals or most healthcare centers. and i mean it in a weirdly nice way. it has a nice fresh feel but deep woodiness as well.

opens with the blast of pine, but it ultimately dries down into a damp, earthy, bergamot-vetiver. it's nice i suppose but it would be much better if the pine was consistent
