Had never heard of this perfume house until I saw the cheeky name of this perfume standing out on the shelf of Lore Perfumery in Fitzroy. An instant obsession for me. It reminds me of the anointing oil on a baby’s head after baptism. The myrrh and frankincense evoke ritual and faith, while the Turkish rose and sandalwood keep things seductive and scandalous. My first pick when I’m home alone and want to wear something just for me. No repenting from me from indulging in this.

An Australian friend of mine has been urging me to try this Sydney-based house for the longest time and today I was finally able to sample some of their fragrances. I see where Religious Guilt Spritz gets its name — for those with a Christian (especially Catholic) upbringing, it calls to mind the smell of an old church with lit candles, burning incense, and ornately carved wood. Unlike an old church, however, Religious Guilt Spritz doesn't have that cold, empty, stone smell. It sits a lot warmer and softer on the skin, a lot less harsh than some other incense-inspired fragrances I've sampled. Ultimately, it does last a long time, but the projection is more muted than expected; it's relatively intimate compared to my expectations. I don't know if you'd be able to smell this from the other side of a confession booth, but you can definitely smell it on yourself. I don't really get a lot of cassia or juniper, and the woods — which usually smell dry to me — sort of blend with the balmy ambers to create a more resinous effect. The rose doesn't stand on its own much, instead contributing to soften the overall fragrance. Good for cold weather, lots of layers, and churchy, gothic vibes. It's not a photorealistic church fragrance, but it definitely evokes the feelings and memories and would be identifiable as church-referential to someone familiar with real-world church smells. I've used the word "church" too much in this review, so I'll sign off now.
