Scent Tattoo

From the reviews, I had some high hopes for this frag, so I went ahead and sampled it...from the first whiff, +1 * Rubber -> [100/100] Opens PURE RUBBER, but then it borrows a latex accord, still rubbery! Not quite a tire-like rubber, but maybe like a fresh rubber, but more rugged than one you’d find in a rubber band—it borrows a faint mimosa accord. Then it feels like a pure, newly manufactured leather that you took a plastic rounded nub and rubbed it around for a little while, not too hard though—it still a strong semblance to rubber. I’m over here smelling it so much to make out the nuances I’m starting to get fatigued from this....whew! It’s that addicting—it sorta reminds me of the yellow rubber soles of a certain type of shoe. It’s also enveloped within a clean musk, which I personally would have toned down just a bit, but I’d imagine it would make the mimosa+styrax present differently. In the drydown it has this plasticky bias, but it still comes off as a rubber frag, but the musk just shares the space with the mimosa-styrax, faint woods, and the light blackcurrant to bring the image to life. I swoon at the thought of layering this with Boxer by HUNQ....truly a masterclass work of art from Christophe Laudamiel. It is quite pricey per mL, but there’s really nothing quite like this. Leatherize by DSD has initial rubber facets but it’s mainly, well, a leather frag. FB worthy.

Addictive leather fragrance with enormous erotic potential. In combination with black currant, mimosa and musk simply irresistible. The best fragrance of The Zoo so far. Identical to Club Design, by the way...

Ok, now I get what all the fuss with Laudamiel is about. Scent Tattoo is a sublimely weird invention. It’s satisfying dark leather, plus a touch of fake raspberry, under a layer of futuristic, squeaky-clean, plasticky synthetics. Luca Turin compared it to a leather-lined airplane cockpit topped with clear Lucite. Arguably this is Knize Ten... IN SPAAAAACE. I find it reminds me of hospitals – in a good way. Medicine has its own glamour, an aura of high-tech expertise. It’s rather pleasant to be in a cathedral of hygiene, and Star Trek’s Sick Bay always had a certain allure. Scent Tattoo has that vaguely medical gleaming cleanness – plus, for an hour or so, the bright red lollipop you might remember topping off childhood doctor’s visits. Weird, for sure, but in a satisfying way. Wholly unisex.

I found the top notes to be 100% animalic. If there is a leather note present in the first few minutes, it's the hide that is only part-way through being tanned the old-fashioned way. It's like a ride through the Jorvik Viking Centre, or a berserk Viking in leather crashing in through your window. There is a whiff of rubber in the top notes as well, so maybe we're at a really wild party with people in fetish gear. Those violent, volatile top notes start to recede and, surprisingly, some shy, ozonic floral notes appear. The extract from the brand above says that they have used spiciness from lilies, mimosa which smells naturally of leather, and a touch of bright watery notes from blackcurrant and grapefruit. I don't get the fruit, especially not the citrus notes, at all but the fresh and dewy flowers are definitely there. So you have a contrast between the animalic leather and the purity of the flowers with the balance slowly shifting away from the down and dirty top notes towards a fresh, green river bank, although it doesn't shift so far that the leather is ever absent. On the HooHaa website it says that Scent Tattoo won the 2018 Art & Olfaction Award for Artisan Perfume and its perfumer, Christophe Laudamiel, was awarded winner for Contribution to Scent Culture at the 2017 award ceremony. It certainly is like nothing else I've experienced. Edit: I’ve had another try at Scent Tattoo. This time I didn’t just get a whiff of rubber, I thought the rubber note was dominant in the top notes. There was also something else. I was also aware of it the first time I tried it. It was definitely something organic and it was familiar but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Then it came to me: whisky. If you have ever put a splash of water into a glass of whisky and released all the different notes you can find in that complex spirit, you will find something familiar in Scent Tattoo. Today I’ve had enough of olfactory challenge and I’m wearing Nahema. You have to live up to Scent Tattoo and I can’t see me having many days when I’ll be reaching for it.

I really wanted to get the Highland Games/ Military Tattoo scene with this, and I do, sort of. It starts like the parking lot in sun: tar, exhaust from cars and food truck generators, a hint of oat cakes, but it's really chemical and strong. Leather comes in but it's the type of chemically tanned leather that still carries that sharp chemical edge. This bit turns my stomach a little because it's so strong and synthetic. After about ten minutes, it's down to a lightly floral leather with tar/asphalt notes, and is much more pleasant. The best thing I can equate it to is the smell you get when you've been standing in the backwash of a gas-powered generator in a suede jacket. At full dry down it's better, as a soft leather with tree sap notes. I really like the full dry down, but I’m not prepared to wait two hours for that.
