The Decay Of The Angel

in many ways, this is the scent to end all scents for me. when i first smelled it, i found it abrasive and cloying. and now look at me, with a full-size bottle sitting at the front of my perfume tray. it's an insane fragrance. i am sure that somedays, the person sitting beside me on the train finds the smell overbearing. but it's a sexy fragrance. it does capture something very 'fallen angel' or 'saint sebastian' or any tragic, eroticized religious imagery you want to substitute. it genuinely does smell like a wilting flower, which could be off-putting, but it's so masterfully combined with the more accessible base notes that it never crosses into rotting territory. it changes on my skin every hour, taking me on a real scent journey. for my skin chemistry, it can last upwards of 7-8 hours! i spray it before work around 8:30 a.m., and it's still going strong around 4, albeit slightly subdued. but it's lovely at all hours! i cannot recommend enough if you are interested in more adventurous, slightly animalistic and earthy-soily scents.

Oh, where to start! This fragrance is a masterful work of art. I sampled it without looking at the notes; I was captivated & strangely moved by the olfactory story that unfolded. Everytime I sniffed my wrist, I found myself riveted by the fascinating evolution & changes that occurred. I’ve never encountered anything quite like it. It sparked feelings of delighted novelty & bittersweet nostalgia in equal measure. It isn’t for everyone; you have to listen quietly to hear the story the tale it tells. But if it speaks to you, it’s profound.

I'm desperately in love with this fragrance. Intoxicating is the only word I have to describe the opening, absolutely intoxicating. I can't stop smelling myself, this fragrance feels like the ultimate in self indulgence and I'm 100% ok with that. Through the day it fades down to a subtle something, very hard to define but still pleasing. By the end of the day there's a hint of what I can only describe as soft cat pee.. but it's still somehow pleasing and again, I can't stop smelling it. This fragrance is special.

Likes: the fragrance is amazing. Deep dark rose like none i can compare. It immediately pulls you in. Dislikes: 1. lasts all of 4 hours on my skin. Sorry, but at this price point i demand better. 2. Weak projection after the first hour. I’ll get an occasional whiff, but it’s a skin scent with almost no sillage.

I got very difforent than the above notes. Damp tobacco flower open, with a cinnamon laden white floral. Then it morphed into a herbal Chinese appoticary all dusty and medicinal, but shortly after its turned into a smokey dove soap. Interesting progression but not something that appeals to me personaly.

The Decay of the Angel is, very intentionally, the latest addition to my and my partner's set of—for want of a better term—"horror" perfumes. With its scent profile as it is, it lends itself almost too readily to comparison with Heretic's infamous yet wonderful Poltergeist. TDotA invokes similar associations with its own brand of medicinal eeriness, courtesy of the hero notes of kyara, an indolic jasmine, tar-like cade oil and a cutting patchouli. That said, it is subtler and sweeter to the point that, although it's still likely to be divisive on the part of its wearers, it's less likely to offend anyone else in the room. The smell is gothic and alluring, and I love smelling it on myself, but the subtlety is, admittedly, a bit of a problem. I think it's fair to say that a statement perfume is only as successful as its sillage, and I'm not sure how much of a statement this one makes, so close to my skin. Nevertheless, I enjoy smelling it on myself, regardless. The nay-sayer in me would complain about TDotA's function as a "politer Poltergeist," but my more optimistic side would focus on the interaction between its opening rose and baseline patchouli and comment on its function as a far more complex and nuanced variation on L'Artisan Parfumeur's Voleur de Roses. Maybe this perfume is, ultimately, more Angel than Decay, but it still delivers what it promises.

My sentiment are a mix bag of thoughts of how this dead angel thing is supposed to play out. Not like I was expecting rotting flesh but some extreme fecal indolic jasmine could've conjured thoughts of necrosis. A white floral is the only thing you will smell for a good while. The alabaster mask is slightly raised revealing a citrus characteristic thwarting nothing in the floral sense. A good portion of this supernatural being centers around the word "white". In moments like these, I need the cavalry to save me from the calvary. A much much much much needed change of pace came in the form of cade oil. Although the tarry ingredient was short lived, more ominous notes followed creating a certain lane of its own. One note that lived to tell its truth was the olibdanum. The smolder sits underneath the sambac resultantly browning the shrubby note. The reticent behavior of tonka beans allowed the woody notes to plant its flag squarely on the balsamic base. I've waited a couple of hours for that defining decaying moment and it appears like I'm waiting on a bus that ain't coming. You'll be unsuccessful in finding anything resembling a rose. In conclusion, too many missing notes and too few wow moments. The Decay of the Angel was a fragrance that I was dying to try...Now Im just bored to death with the results.

Maybe this one will grow on me, but I expected more. Perhaps this fragrance is subtle rather than dull, but I don't sense a whole lot going on here. It's a "white " fragrance, for sure. I would call it a sharp scent: jasmine, cedar, tangerine peel, something a bit rubbery-smelling. I will be generous and say there's a smell of ash in there, but I would not go so far as to call it "smokey". My major problem with Decay of the Angel is that it has an incredibly cool and dramatic name but it utterly fails to live up to it. It's kind if a poser. With a name like Decay of the Angel, you're expecting heavy metal or gothic rock. But instead it's minimalist ambient music that you'd probably hear at the spa. I could see customers being disappointed not only at it's subtle composition but with its performance as a fragrance. It's not made of anything particularly robust. It's a waifish, gossamer, anemic little scent that expends what energy it has within about 10 minutes, spending a lot more time as a skin scent than it does anything else. And this stuff ain't cheap! Niche fragrance has a tendency to be pretentious and overpriced at times. Decay of the Angel gets dangerously close to being both of these things.

A perfume that defies easy description. It is clean and dirty, angelic and yet hauntingly somber (not in a bad way). This reminds me of the scent of decaying leaves, the Fall, the end of warm days and the subtly smokey cade signalling a wood fire or a smoldering pile of leaves somewhere in the distance. (Emotionally, this conjures a similar synesthetic effect of Breath of God). It will not inspire compliments by the uninitiated, but it will elicit curiosity. "What IS that smell? Something smells so interesting." If this is a white floral, it is an antiseptic, medicinal, and abstract white floral. If this is a rose, it is a single rose placed in a vase of ink. I think oud is the wizard that is conjuring the contrasting effects here. I do not find this boring. I find it quite evocative.

It doesn’t live up to the branding , however it is a sultry, alluring and very sophisticated gothic scent. It’s very resinous , woody and lively, not that smoky. Certainly gives a dark forest atmosphere great to wear in autumn or spring. To me it’s a chypre throughout, at no point did I detect any prominent floral in there. It’s a bit disappointing how minimal it is. Very comparable to Hwyl by Aesop which I would recommend getting instead as this one was not cheap at all.

Like when you first walk into a Chinese medicine store the full experience with the dirty glass door that has a ridged metal frame and as soon as you walk in a gush of air blows the scent of all the herbs into your face. It’s that but sexy. The dry down is a spicy neroli for me. My only issue is it doesn’t last long enough on me.

It’s a lovely, fresh scent. Somber but playful, the notes are accurate and all marry well together. I agree that it does feel lacking for a Mishima inspired scent, but it’s a beautiful composition nonetheless.

it's like pushing your way through dark, dense foliage and catching fleeting glimpses of clean flowers out of the corner of your eye.
