Wounded Rose 刺

I tend to avoid rose fragrances, not because I have any negative associations with the note, but simply because rose-centric fragrances tend to bore me. The so-called queen of flowers has been iterated upon so many times that when modern commercial releases headline a prominent rose accord, it reads to me almost as a sign of mundanity. Of course, I know that this is a reductive line of thinking. There are still interesting ways to craft a scent around the rose, in much the same way that market saturation of gourmands and musky "your skin but better" scents does not mean that there are no thoughtfully composed perfumes belonging to said categories. Wounded Rose is a rose that successfully toes the line between wearable and novel, with a constellation of resinous, aromatic, and woody notes carefully arranged around a central rose. True to the concept of depicting a rose and its thorns, Wounded Rose maintains a ginger-like sharpness throughout its wear time, undergirded by a dark murmur of vetiver and myrrh. A strange but not unpleasant inverted pyramid effect occurs where the scent opens with an olfactory chiaroscuro and then has the light and shadows blend together. But there is more light than dark, and so the scent skews fresh as the hours pass. The scent's longevity is middling, hovering around 6 hours in the admittedly hot and humid conditions in which I am writing, but it has good projection, at least based on friends who commented on catching whiffs of it throughout the day. The herbal brightness of the scent makes it an easy reach for the summer, and I am curious to find out how my perception of it may change in the winter. I purchased this particular rose on a whim through a friend vacationing in Shanghai, and despite my initial reservations, it has become one of my favourite fragrance discoveries of this year. It is good to challenge your preferences from time to time - there are a great many beautiful things in this world that we otherwise unthinkingly deny ourselves the pleasure of experiencing.
