Maya

If I were to give a review a year ago, I would have written similar to others who have stating that Tocca Maya is nice enough but rather generic. I have tried it twice since it was first launched. But about a month ago, I received a sample and I decided to wear it all day and spray it all over. I was so surprised that, as the day went on, I found myself smelling my wrist - getting a whiff of it and liking it very much. By the end of the day, I order a larger bottle and a travel size. It is in fact similar to others - a less potent version (and perhaps somewhat less complex but I'm not so sure about that) than La Vie est Belle but, when I wear est Belle, it becomes stringent and too much, which Maya never does. In fact, it softens down over time and takes on another quality. It has a slight sweetness to it. I DO think it shows off as a chypre - especially the light touch of oakmoss - a giveaway for a traditional chypre. If I may, I would recommend purchasing a smaller travel size or 2 samples and wearing it all to see if you agree. It's not Chanel or high end - but I have grown to like it very much - I have become weary of the strong patchouli/vanilla/sweet perfumes that can be too much. This same things happened to me with another Tocca - although an entirely different scent - Tocca Cleopatra is very similar to Rodriguez For Her Fleur - which I like very much. But Rodriguez can really "stay" with you all day while Cleopatra is softer - I compared them wrist to wrist and ended up liking Tocca better - sometimes we might think that a softer perfume "goes away," because we can't smell it as much but often people can still smell it - it has developed a "cloud" of sorts and envelopes you and is not "in your face" as much. - Just some thoughts - :)

So...I got the Tocca discovery set today and LISTEN...I gotta tell you. Maya? Maya is that gworl. Hands down. Easily. While this isn't my absolute fav of the bunch, I was shocked by the fact that I, a huge patchouli hater (patchouli and I? Mortal enemies. Never been a bigger rivalry.) fell in love with this perfume. But let me tell you about Maya... Maya is the girl you see out walking around with thick rimmed black glasses, fishnet stockings and blood red lipstick. Maya is the girl cradling a whiskey sour in one hand and her phone in the other while wearing a little black dress at the hole in the wall speakeasy downtown. You never really forget her laugh, her wit, or the way she smelled. Black currant is strong in the opening, but it makes way to a beautiful floral -- also, this perfume reminds me of something I used to wear in high school, but I can't exactly put my finger on what it is. But I have scent memories attached to a particular note(s?) in this fragrance, just can't figure out what. Patchouli earths the composition, but not in a dirty overpowering way. Also, this scent is a man killer ... I literally caught two (yes, two) of my bosses getting close to my neck to smell me. In my opinion, not a safe blind buy... Maya is the kind of fragrance, you have to wear her... or she will wear you. I don't feel like this would be fit for everybody. Definitely full bottle worthy and highly considering it.

This is my second time wearing TOCCA Maya - the first time was in the summer and although I didn't hate it, it certainly wasn't a love. I had the thought that I might like this fragrance in cold weather, so I put my sample away for fall/winter. Cut to today, about 5 months later, and I am in love with this fragrance! Most of the TOCCA fragrances I have tried are super floral and/or shampooey, but Maya is neither. I do get the iris note, and it does come across as lipsticky, and a bit of the rose and jasmine, but it's mostly the patchouli and oakmoss mixed with black currant that I smell on my skin. And I love it! The patchouli is unlike any other patchouli I have tried, in that I enjoy it. I don't know what the difference is tbh. Maybe someone else can enlighten me? Either way, I really enjoy this fragrance. It's the perfect cold weather lipsticky patchouli with the slightest hint of fruitiness. I remember this fragrance lasting quite awhile when I tried it in summer, so I am curious to see how the longevity is in cold weather. I just remembered seeing a 20 ml of Maya at TJ Maxx for $12 shortly after trying the sample for the first time...and I passed it up! Darn it!!!!

stunning sweet feminine floral scent. smells like the color purple to me. sweet, earthy, natural. i am very pleasantly surprised by this as i normally find florals cloying but this is very subtle and clean smelling. i can detect the sandalwood base note and i think that is what makes it so intoxicating and brings it up a notch. it is yummy but inedible. i wish i got more of a jammy vibe that others are reporting, but to me its mostly subtlety floral and natural. very fresh and reminds me of frolicking through a garden on a warm spring day. edit: after a few hours of wear, this becomes an uncannily similar to bath and body works "french lavender and honey" that has been discontinued for a a while now. i knew this smelled familiar and that is what this smells like to me.

This makes the second Tocca fragrance I've owned besides Brigitte as most are too floral and grandma smelling. I tried Maya in Sephora not drawn by the purple color but bcuz it was new. I spritzed it in the bend of my arm and forgot about it as I shopped around. I noticed it smelled like Flower Bomb at intro but as it dried down it developed into something sweet, flower, woody,very luxurious and sexy. I received a compliment on how good I smelled from a very handsome and I said this is a winner! I had to have it! Chypre scents are so mysterious and intriguing to the senses. It reminds me of how it smells when I enter Saks 5th Ave!

I received a sample of this from Sephora today and to my nose it smells just like Kenzo World. Maybe a tad bit stronger. I love Kenzo World so this is a win. I have so many perfumes right now that I cannot justify purchasing this one too. I have Kenzo World, Kenzo World Intense (which is amazing) and backups of both of them. This I may visit after I finish all of the Kenzos. It will take years though. I would be willing to swap if someone bought it and doesn't love it. Just let me know what you need and I will check the stash. lol.

Mmm this is such a sultry deep fragrance. I sprayed it on in the Sephora one evening before going to a concert at a local rock bar and let me tell you it was perfect for the late night ambiance. But it can be worn on a cozy night at home as well. It reminds me so much of my old favorite "Iris" by Crabtree & Evelyn-so glad to have found a dupe! I had the C&E shower gel and used it for the most relaxing bubble baths so in addition to being oh-so-sexy it's very soothing. I hope Tocca makes a Bagno Profumato form of Maya, per favore!

I find Tocca fragrances nice generally but I LOVE Maya. I can def understand the polarization in the reviews because it has a strong patchouli base but I find this to be such a unique interesting scent. Nothing I’ve smelled is like it. The way I’d describe Maya is the witchy mischievous dark haired sister of the Tocca clan who’s up out doing something wild at 3am, while her softer, sunnier sisters have been in bed since 10.

I tried my sample today and just love it! I was not expecting to love it based on the reviews below. I typically and not a fan of iris or powder fragrances. This is different. I don't sense the powder and the iris is not so strong. It is a basic sweet fruity scent with decent longevity. I am looking to see how cheaply I can get a full bottle on ebay right now. It is going to be great for the spring and summer

This is such a beautiful fragrance to me. Honeyed blackberry jam, bare feet on warm soil, loose braids — honey sticks at the health food shop. This is an understated and delightful fragrance that would be at home in any feminine or cottagecore type collection. I wish I understood the negative reviews here a little more, because I think this fragrance is just soft and lovely!

I am surprised that there are so many negative reviews , this is one of my fave perfumes. It’s hard to explain the way that it smells though, it is different than my others, I’m 33 and I love it . And it’s winter time and it’s working well . Smells so good and it lasts a nice long time. Very floral and yes patchouli. Great scent , very fresh smelling

Men love this, it's a compliment-getter. Edit: I really, really love this, too. Updated my rating to a love, but the sillage and longevity DO leave something to be desired, so be warned. Seems to do better on hair and the back of the neck.

I really like this. It's what I imagined Del Pozo Halloween would smell like (but that one is a freesia bomb.) Easily my favorite so far from Tocca. Reminds me of Rance Josephine a little bit.

It has a pretty woody smell but also smells sparkly, the Chypre parts of it make this smell really fancy. I think it’s really suitable for formal events but not really casual wear.

Iris and blackcurrant play so nicely together. This is a bit mature and has prominent patchouli but somehow it still works for me! Need to test it on my skin next time.

Upfront is a juicy blackberry smell, with very warm notes underneath. Appeals to me as it is makes me feel very feminine without being cloying or powdery.

Gorgeous fruitchouli made earthier with oakmoss. If you like this, try Piege de Lulu Castagnette.

The perfect chypre for someone who wants to try one for the first time, or for someone who likes the base notes in chypres but are put off by how beast mode some can get. This is a very soft, understated and approachable chypre. As someone who has a very sensitive nose, I find the projection weak, and that is saying a lot. I had to over spray just to be able to smell it and 2 hrs later i have to put my nose up to my arm to get a scent. Having said that, it really is a lovely soft scent, typical of the Tocca aesthetic. Romping through fields in Italy, wearing a boho dress and straw hat kind of feeling. Or probably what an Anthropologie store should smell like. Tocca does a great job at creating a sense of romanticism. The patchouli, sandalwood and oakmoss blend togetehr for a light creamy woodiness without any damp forrest floor that oakmoss is usually known for. I can detect the jasmine and iris, with the blackcurrent adding a touch of jammy sweetness. It's not a sweet perfume, the fruit lends an airiness to it usually missing from old school chypres. It's nice, inoffensive and something of an easy reach if you're in a rush and don't want to mull over a fragrance. If you like collecting Tocca scents as I do, you won't be mad at having this in your line up. It has enough of the Tocca identity to blend in with its sisters but different enough from the other scents to stand out.

Maya is another generic if nicely-composed feminine scent from Tocca, unchallenging and pretty. Sweet yet fresh, it is reads to me as a fruitchouli - floral-fruity facets with a subtle chypre base. It is surprisingly subtle after the bright, fruity opening subsides. As an iris lover, I was particularly keen to try this, but despite the iris note listed, it is far from the iris scent of my dreams. Maya has a sweet, fruity opening, led by cordial-like blackcurrant, sweet yet refreshing. The Parma violet note follows closely, more sweet than floral, amping up the fruitiness of the opening, and adding a powdery edge. This paves the way seamlessly to the lipstick-like iris-rose accord that forms the heart. Powdery and sweet, it is airy and nicely-rendered. The patchouli dominates the drydown, adding an earthy cloud that brings the modern chypre accord to life. It is a logical progression, complementing the rose and fruity notes nicely. Soft woody notes creep in as it fades, becoming an earthy, powdery skin scent after a little while. Sillage is intimate and longevity is moderate. A youthful and lighthearted floral-fruity-patchouli scent featuring a lipstick accord at its heart, Maya is a pleasant, transeasonal feminine scent that is easy-to-wear but not particularly memorable. Pretty but subtle. 3/5.

God help me, I like this. It’s awash in the sort of synthetic, rubbing-alcohol-like, “perfumey” sharp smell that you get in less-expensive department store perfume. That’s life. But underneath there’s a cool, interesting structure. It starts off with mostly the violet leaf (a sharp, fizzy-green aromachemical that makes me insta-happy) and a very gentle patchouli fuzz, like the fuzzy-shadowy base of Agent Provocateur. It has kind of a “moonlit garden” feel, bright leaves and dark underbrush. And some kind of generically “floral” note that I assume qualifies as rose. And then in a few minutes the blackcurrant comes out and it’s *just right*, hanging out on the edge between trashy and poignant, briefly melding with the patchouli into something whole and complete. I’ve been craving a purple fragrance that wasn’t too literally just grape kool-aid, and this is proof that purple can be graceful and almost delicate. No discernible iris. Obviously no sandalwood.

My least favorite tocca in a vial sampler set. Even as I write it & hold my wrist to my nose, what started as a dirty blast of patchouli with screechy black currant is morphing into something bold & slightly less hateful even on my unaccepting canvas. This scent is a confident woman, effortlessly elegant sitting in a patch of sunlight cross-legged in long skirts at repose in a walnut-rich library, soaring with stacks of rare volumes, fading jewel-toned orientals at the velvet-tipped toe of her low heel. She looks up to evaluate you as open the door, takes an unhurried sip from her glass, winks over the rim of her specs, & turns the page, kind but firmly engrossed in her novella. Her crisp white shirt stands out in the rich-hued image of her imprinted on your mind after you leave the room & you find yourself wishing for her brand of confidence though her scent is uniquely her & never you. I like her confidence but I’d be an imposter to smell of her.

Juicy sweet black currant! That’s what’s super dominant on my skin and to my nose. There’s something a teeny bit powdery and lipsticky here too, with a sweet patchouli. Not a terribly complicated scent, and not really a chypre, but I like it. Must love black currant to enjoy this one. But, seems like folks get really different strengths of the notes depending on personal chemistry so who knows! I think it’s cool when scents are like that. There are a bunch of black currant-heavy fragrances out there, and I do think this is one of the better ones I’ve tried. I’m not in a phase where I want that note dominating on me, so it’s a “like” for now. Wish I had this instead of Flowerbomb Midnight which gives me the pungent cat piss accord after a while... no, Maya stays sweet and lovely all day long. Unlike most Tocca scents I have tried, this has decent sillage and good longevity—smellable within a few feet and lasts 8ish hours.

Moonlight Fairy. Worn globally from the bottle it is deep and feminine, sweet and fruity iris, a classic fruitchouli construction that reminds me of Coco Mademoiselle style which I love. Not similar as a scent as this is gentler, sheerer and more dreamy, even nocturnal. I quite love it today but it does not perform well. From the sample it seemed flat and lacy sugary violets! Now it is deep and romantic. A pity that in this 5°C weather it lays close to the skin after first hour of projection. This is well blended. I cannot truly take the scent apart. Black currants are so soft and gentle here they only add tartness to the abstract floral bouquet that has a woody finish to my nose. Patchouli is unperceivable. My namesake so I am happy it is a variation on my fav fruitchouli. Today not even reapplying helps with performance.

Very nice. Honestly I didn't read it as a chypre at first, but that may be due more to inexperience than any failing on Tocca's part. The strongest elements are the black currant note, woods, and patchouli, but it's a very well balanced patchouli with zero headshop inclinations. I think this is a wonderful scent for day or night, cooler weather preferred; I will say that it doesn't smell as expensive as it is, and it's hard to justify such a subjective statement but I feel it's true. Not every Tocca perfume gives me this impression. Stella, for one, feels like it should cost what it does. Projection and sillage are just alright. A win if you can find it on sale.

Received a sample from Tocca after ordering some of their laundry delicate (Giulietta) but this fragrance smells and or reminds me so much of Avon Imari, my mother wore this fragrance the entire time I was in high school and upon first whiff of this it took me right back to being a teen. Can’t say this is a scent for me I get a lot of the oakmoss, sandlewood and violet with a hint of patchouli. And this fragrance has even managed to give me the same slight headache the Avon Imari use to give me if I sat and had to smell it for too long, lol. But if you’re someone who loves deep rich scents with a side punch of florals I would recommend this fragrance to you.

In 5°C it was too close to the skin, but in 25° it is sheer and delicate also. The effect is similar so it is universal with regards to weather just on the delicate site yet substantial. It is weird like that. And I think I prefer it for the evening, it just has an aura of dusk - soft and hazy. The scent of violet leaves, iris, jasmine and a drop of black currants. In this order. The base is sheer and lightly bitter with oakmoss. After 4 hours I start to feel the patchouli. The scent is eerie, mystical and light in character. The bottle is a gorgeous decorative item with metal top.

I definitely enjoy the die down versus the initial scents of black currant. I would rate this a 6/10 as I feel that the scent is nothing to write home about. The positives were that it is a very fresh smell, leaning a little towards a unisex scent. It is also very light and I could see this as a great summer time scent. I may revisit it during those months. I took this on vacation with me and the Rating has changed. I give this an 8/10. As I was walking through the streets if San Francisco, I kept getting whiffs of this scent. I also was complicated several times. :)

This reminds me of a sweet Angel. Perhaps the patchouli? This a fruity, sweet and earthy scent. The dark fruits add a deep juicy twist. Maya at first is juicy and fresh, with an undercurrent of earthy and woody bases. I really feel like this is a more wearable angel. Although its not exactly what I would buy for myself off the bat, I do really like this. I think if you're worried about the patchouli note, don't be. Its blends quite well. It dries down to a muted, musky fruity patchouli.

Quite a lovely subtle feminine scent. The opening is my favourite part of it; the blackcurrant is juicy and has a slightly effervescent quality. The florals then come through in the drydown, particularly the rose and iris (although it’s not an overpowering powdery iris). I can smell the patchouli and oakmoss but they’re fairly muted; I wouldn’t say this is a classic chypre (it’s too fruity). As with all Tocca scents the longevity and sillage are quite soft.

A really nice blend of blackcurrant, florals, and patchouli, that's not incredibly memorable. I don't really get the powdery notes that other people do. I wish I had more to say about this perfume, honestly, but there's not much there. It's slightly sweet, slightly floral, and doesn't project or last too long. In fact, the perfume stays longer on my clothes than it does on my skin. It's nice, it's just not anything to write home about.

This scent opens very richly as a salty, musky berry. It doesn’t have much depth and goes in an almost oceanic direction, still salty and fruity but almost with a watered down musk? I actually like this scent, it is unique and mysterious. I don’t think it really suits my personality but I like to smell it from the bottle as it’s very calming. It doesn’t last very long though... Longevity-1 hour Projection-light Overall-7/10

Originally I thought this reminded me of Coco Mademoiselle bc of the strong patchouli at the beginning, but it dries down really fast and becomes very nondescript on me. It just smells like "perfume" and not for very long or loud enough to make an impression. I got it very inexpensively at TJ Maxx so I'm not upset, but if I had paid $76 for the 1.7 oz. bottle I have I'd have had a hissy fit.

smells very witchy and mysterious to me, which is fitting since the bottle looks like a potion... ive had this one since high school so i dont wear it anymore due to scent associations but i generally like the scent a lot :) im not usually into woody or earthy scents on myself but this one has a sweetness from the currant that really balances it out for me!

Lacy, fragile, delicate. Super feminine verging on girly. Beautiful, translucent, sugary black currant with violet and iris supported by white, pure jasmin in its daytime, fragile, sugary aspect. Gentle, soft, subtle but easily 8+ hours performance and feminine presence. Perfect in its sugary, fruity-floral, lightweight, feminine cathegory.

This is a light, sandalwood, floral chypre on me. Although not listed within the notes, I even get a hint of cedar. It reminds me a tad of Chloe Nomade. And yes, it becomes more of a skin scent rather quickly. While I wouldn't otherwise purchase this, as I already have Nomade, I justify having it as part of a Tocca 3 ml rollerball set.

This is the first Tocca perfume I have sampled. It doesn't get the best reviews, but I think it's a perfectly nice fragrance. It's woody and fruity with prominent notes of patchouli and black currant. I also really like the powdery iris heart. Maya is a win for me!

This scent gives me the same vibes as Sissi, the movie. Its woody, princessy, fruity scent. If you have a cottagecore aethetic it smells like that. Kind of princess aurora before the prince. Its a beautiful iris and sugar earthy scent. Perfect for a damp fall day.

If you love black current and lovely florals, you will like Maya. It's well blended, decent longevity with moderate projection. Is it ground breaking? No. But it's a very lovely fragrance, especially for fall weather.

This smells like the dry down of Angel after several hours which is what I like about it. A nice clean, soapy, floral patchouli.

It's okay. I got it for free from Sephora to review. #Summerscents A little too sweet for me, but I may wear it on occasion.

This is like a lighter, fresher version of Flowerbomb. Strong rose, well-balanced with subtle powdery and earthy accords.

It's a fun fragrance to spray it on anytime. Unfortunately, it doesn't last for me and the fragrance isn't memorable.

get the iris and flowers but it also reminds me of noxema or vicks rub.... Just me??

Maya is just an ok for me not because of the way it smells but because of performance. It is a honeyed blackberry type of perfume w/ a slight lipstick accord that never is allowed to shine because it ends so quickly. Maya ends in a slight powdery finish that is barely a whisper. Does not perform as well as expected either. I find all of the other Tocca's I sampled last quite well but Maya fades very quickly. I have one more to test, Bianca (I'm not testing Lillianna or Belle) but my favorites are in order as follows Florence, Stella, Gia, Colette, Simone, Cleopatra, Maya all of these are nice easy and very wearable. As a whole I like Tocca very much. The branding is lovely and so are the bottles. I see myself being quite loyal to this line. Giulietta, I didn't care for at all but that was the only one I found objectionable. Maya is pretty but longevity is an issue.

Maya is a very commercial, of-the-moment fruity floral patchouli; it’s perfectly well executed, but it’s scent profile is so ubiquitous that it’s easy to dismiss this as a worse fragrance than it is. Tocca specializes is pretty, refined scents, so this mall bomb is somewhat off-brand, but it’s a serviceable fragrance if that’s what you like, and plenty of people do. The only real downside is the price, and for something that has so many comparable scents, the $80-ish pricetag for 50ml seems quite steep. I blind bought this at a discount retailer for less than $20, and that seems about right for this particular composition. At retail price, I’d probably spring for the similar-but-richer Marc Jacobs Decadence if this fragrance style were more my thing. Collette remains the uncontested gem of this line in my opinion.

I semi-blind bought this at Marshall's, thinking it was Colette, so definitely not what I was expecting! Maya is fine -- inoffensive, sweet, and linear, with decent longevity and sillage like other Tocca scents I've tried. Although I don't think it's very interesting on its own and isn't woody enough for my tastes, it does layer very well, so it's fun to experiment with. Also has this very odd artificial grape note that dragged up a sense memory of one of the Harajuku Lovers perfumes from back in the day (maybe Music or Love from whatever the second line was called).

Out of all the tocca scents i've tried so far Maya is my least favourite. Despite polarizing reviews I took my chances getting a rollerball on sale being that I do enjoy a good woody fragrance and I could use this for layering but i'm not a fan. Its a very sharp blackberry with wood and i dont really think they compliment each other. I also initially thought it was very masculine, but the dry down is more unisex. Its not terrible but I would never think to buy this especially in a bottle.

This smells very distinctly like the colors pink and purple. Starts fruity, just short of headache inducing (sharp patchouli), dries down powdery; I agree that it’s fleeting but it does last about an hour or two and the drydown sticks around for longer. It’s a pleasant drydown, like musky Iris/violet. These notes truly do go well with blackberries and black currants. The fruits do come off a little sharp though at the top compared to other perfumes in this category.

The opening is a very sweet syrup-y artificial black current, which I really do not like. After a few minutes, that becomes less prominent and it becomes a gentle sweet powdery scent. It's very much a skin scent. Not really a fan. I'll probably come back to this tester every once in awhile to give it another chance. Overall, I just find it boring and I don't like the black current in this. Not a note I dislike in general. I just don't like how it's done here.
