Rive d’Ambre

What a masterpiece. I blind bought this one, when it was discontinued and I found an insane discount. I nearly hadn't even heard this one, I didn't even know it was an eau de cologne take, my full attention from Atelier line was on Plum Japonais. I first tested it during a heatwave on May and it performed quite bad, it disappeared within a couple of hours, I went really easy on the spray though, I thought this might be a heavy private blend and on the same track with the rest private blend powerhouses. Well this is not the case - but we will talk about this later, because it is not as weak as many say. I kept reading reviews saying that this is weak and linear so I was a bit skeptical about it, I used it again over spraying a bit, during the heat of the Greek summer and I got disappointed again as it quite collapsed to a weak mess in less than an hour. I decided to give it another try today, a perfect sunny warm autumn day and I experienced something totally new and amazing. I guess that Rive D'Ambre needs a bit of over spraying and a bit of the right temperature to shine - I don't mean snow but it had a hard time during the extreme heat I used to wear it. It opens with slightly dusty and bitter citruses but the balance between the dusty and bitter notes is phenomenal. It is like a modern eau de cologne minus any hints of retro notes. Then amber starts to shine but it is quite like a base of the whole composition and quite soft and a bit muted. It is so well blended, so amazing, I really can't get enough of its magic. I absolutely love this dry down which surprisingly stayed with me for a total of 8(!) hours with good projection and 6 more hours as a skin scent. This surprised me so much because what I kept reading - and what I had already experienced - was that this one doesn't last at all - I thought that if it underperformed in heat, it would just evaporate in minutes on more cold days. Not really. Its duration was a huge surprise when I used it today - I guess that 20C degrees make it shine like a diamond. Is this one overpriced? Well it could be cheaper, it is not the definition of niche but it is a amazing perfume whatsoever. A masterpiece hiding in plain sight. Huge love from me and I hope to be able to get another bottle of this one.

Rewriting my review: Initially, I dismissed this as one of my grandmother's floral perfumes. It was just too blossom-y and powdery for me, and upon smelling it I instantly pictured this as something she would wear. After some time, I've given it a few wears and I've changed my stance. Slightly. Although i still get the "old-lady perfume" vibe, I also get clean orange zest and blossom. There's a smell that reminds me of standing by my grandparent's wildly overgrowing tangelo tree, a similar "stinkiness" that comes just ever so slightly in the background. Not sure it that "stink" came from the blossoms or the sap of the tree, but I recall that scent so vividly just typing about it now. I don't get amber at all, nor do I get cognac. I find this to be a crisp clean citrus fragrance that showcases what it smells like to be amongst orange and lemon trees. I feel like this fragrance got mixed up in marketing, maybe due to the name, but it absolutely should be in a blue bottle and not a dark amber one. 8/10 for me; a great clean scent that's unisex leaning on, well I'd say masculine upon re-review, but barely so IMO. Fragrance is choking if you over-apply it, 2 sprays on the neck should do it and lasts almost all day.

I'm sure most, or all of us, at one point has either "hit a wall" or become generally bored with fragrances. For me, this is the type of fragrance that reminds me why i love this. I don't know how else to say it. For me, it starts out kinda like a "dark" citrus with a "dark" aquatic vibe. The sweetness of it reminds me of orange fizzy candies but more of a tangerine aroma. Then, a couple hours later it's an almost totally different fragrance! Absolutely incredible. It almost literally smells different from one wearing to the next. Overall performance is very good. I used to think this belonged in the blue bottle, but nope. Tom got it right. Marketing didn't mix it up. Not one of my favorite fragrances by any means, but hugely impactful for me and really does remind me why i loved colognes and perfumes to begin with. To find gems like this. 10/10 as an overall product but I'd rate it an 7 for me personally. That may sound odd but giving it its due props.

LIKE A SPICIER VERSION OF PORTOfINO I find Rive D'ambre absolutely refreshing as well as warm and pleasing. It opens with a zesty citrus blast of orange and orange grind soaked in cognac and spiced with Cardamon and tarragon and mint. Very refreshing and like a men's cologne but taken the cologny aspect out of it for both sexes to enjoy. I prefer this in the summer and spring but it is a all around warm ambery yellow fragrance. It's like a sunset over a field of orange trees . I find this fizzy , orangey , slightly boozy , spicy and ambery, my only problem with this one is, it only lasts about two hours. But. I do enjoy reapplying a scent, I really don't mind , since we all love fragrances we all enjoy spraying it. I replay most of my scents 3 times during the day, just so I can enjoy the fresher top notes again and again.

The best that Tom Ford has ever put out. Its fresh, spicy and somehow seems perfect for any occasion. Opening is a very bitter citrus, similar to a citrus rind squeezed over a cocktail. Once it begins to dry down, you get a creamy citrus with hints of the cognac and minty, spicy, herbal undertone that create a unique amber barbershop like scent. Tarragon has to be the most unique aspect here that just seems to catch you off guard when you find it. You smell a hint of floral vanilla in the base from the tolu balsam, but it remains very fresh with those hints of spice. Simply a masterpiece and the best citrus scent to me, I will be stocking up on this discontinued gem. Surprisingly I get pretty good performance from the couple of bottles I've stocked up on. Tom Ford needs to re-release this one.

My first tom ford private blend experience was with tobacco vanille, its longevity and projection is beastly so i thought this would be the same, boy oh boy was i wrong! I had just smelled this at the shop and loved it and being private blend i didnt spray it to test it out, come 6 months later i decided to purchase it, it was this october i got it, sprayed it and was literally like “didnt i spray it? Did i miss my arm or something? I couldve sworn i sprayed it!”. So you can imagine my disappointment. It smells wonderful, tom ford has an awesome nose but something obviously went wrong here and im thinking maybe thats why its discontinued. Also, it triggered my skin allergy, just as tobacco vanille had but i just sprayed it on my clothes.

A palette of citruses that catches the bitter, sour and sweet aroma from all parts. It's bright and lively but there are shades of dark hidden underneath. The base provides some depth and ads character, but the star is always the citrus. Another companion is the mint, that puts the citruses even more into the spotlight with added crispness. Only in the late dry down, after about 5 hours, when I can only smell it from up close, I get a clear amber note. For me, this is a better alternative to Neroli Portofino as a summer scent, because it's more sparkly and complex. 8/10

8/10- The most fun TF composition. This blend is basically made of different citruses which don't lean too tart, fresh, or bitter. It's a perfect balance of all elements of the citruses featured in this blend. The cognac is noticeable and sophisticated, lovely scent if you can afford the price tag for sub-par longevity. Unlike the unruly and playful Bulgari Aqva Amara, Rive d’Ambre can be worn all year round and can be a signature scent for someone who loves citrus in fragrances. This citrus is calm and composed, suitable for the office.

I wore this the day I saw my husband for the first time, in 2014, because we both love citrus scents. There is a variety of citrus combined with hints of brandy and the subtle sweetness of cardamom that brings all the notes together. Not so masculine for a feminine dressed woman. It becomes a body scent in the dry-down. Unfortunately the longevity is quite short. Mr Tom Ford, I’ve spent so much money on buying your perfumes, can you please bring this one back without reformulating it?

Oh wow what a beautiful scent. Tom Ford never disappoints. Imho. This one is such a lovely unique citrusy Amber scent but it doesn’t project much and doesn’t last very long. I love it for Spring and Summer. When you first spray it give it a few seconds to settle down before u take a sniff. I suggest buying a sample first, from a reliable place. Definitely full bottle worthy. Once I finish my 15ml decant, I’m buying a bottle. I love this one.

Completely unisex! Not masculine. Last on skin for 3 hours max. Last on clothing 3 days max. Don’t waste this expensive product on skin b/c it won’t last. Instead, spray on your clothing and let the wafts illuminate your mood thru and thru. I typically don’t care for citrus based frags but this citrus is beautifully / beautifully done.

Did anyone clone this? I'd love to be able to wear this in abundance. Possibly the best summer scent i used to have, but it was way overpriced. Glorious scent though. I remember thinking it should have been in a fruit tingle colour bottle and 250ml and affordable, that would be great.

Fresh, green, clean, Christmas tree evergreens with a citrus top. I don't get any amber in this, and very little citrus. Rive d'Ambre is my favorite of the Atelier d'Orient series. Not as long lasting as other fragrances by Tom Ford. Still full bottle worthy for me.

What I love about this fragrances is that its not trying to be astounding and render all who smell it speechless. It's a lovely fragrance, perfect for Spring/summer, uses quality ingredients, has a discreet trail and gets compliments. Its a fav!

like opening a bag of satsumas really nice smell but not worth the money, i can get that in tesco for a couple of quid but i'm not carrying oranges about with me all day

The fragrance that wakes me up in the autumn morning. It's so pleasantly citrusy fresh with a twist of sophistication! Absolutely love it - mood booster!

This is so imperial and citrusy, I love it! The amber is indeed hidden, but in perfect balance with all the other notes.

Longevity 5 mins. Is there anything else out there that smells as awesome as this but actually lasts more than 5 mins?

112)This is a nice citrus water mainly orange spiced with cinnamon, on a bed of incense, ginger and musk but who was already done, unfortunately for T.F. quiet better, by Diptyque L'Eau de Tarocco. There is absolutely not a hint of amber so I guess that the reference just comes from color or a place in Asia. It is very pretty but go directly try L'Eau de tarocco for more nuances and pleasure... especially since it is a quarter of the price of a Tom Ford. I think Tom Ford has sens of humor. When he called his new 4 creations Atelier d'Orient (east Workshop) it means the countless workshops in Asia that produce clothing with the logo of the brand of your choice above. The four creations are all slightly modified copies of "small" classics from French niche perfumery (Lutens, Diptyque, Maître Parfumeur et Gantier, ...). Voilà une agréable eau d'agrumes épicée à la canelle sur lit d'encens, gingembre et musc mais qui a malheureusement été déjà bien mieux faite par Dyptique dans son Eau de Tarocco. Il n'y a absolument pas une touche d'ambre donc je suppose que la référence provient juste de la couleur ou d'un lieu en asie. C'est donc très joli mais allez directement essayer l'Eau de Tarocco pour avoir plus de nuances et de plaisir...surtout qu'elle est au quart du prix d'un Tom Ford.

Delightful bright citrus on application and for 20 mins thereafter. Unfortunately, the follow-through is poor and is thus disappointing, with the citrus fading into middle territory far too quickly, then a nearly zero-sillage bottom after 40 mins. While having a much more tighly-wound and overwhelming lime top note, TF's Azure Lime is far more linear on my skin and is preferable to me. However, since I liked the top on RA so much, I will be simply reapplying every hour to test how long it takes for a co-worker to complain that I'm wearing too much perfume. That will help define my application "upper limit", as it were. So I suspect my bottle of RA will disappear rather quickly, which is not optimal for a perfume at this price point. Fortunately, I got my bottle for free from a rep at a major retail outlet where I spend a lot of money on fragrances. I was thus predisposed to write a more positive review on RA, but even at that "price", I can't do it.

First Impressions (rollerball): Bruh, did fragrantica ghost my reviews or something. When I tried to look back at my reviews it doesn’t show up like it usually does. DISCLAIMER: I bought an impression of Rive D'Ambre from amazon. However, I smelled this in the past and it does smell the exact same to me. I do love this perfume. It smells very much like a creamsicle in the hot afternoon. What I don't like is that it sits VERY close to the skin, and doesn't last at all :(. Omg did I forget to write a review about this one. I guess I did :(. I really really liked this one. It’s citrusy, it’s minty. It makes me happy. However, it does not last long at all on my skin. It’s a shame really. Summary: Smells like: a happy go lucky citrus creamsicle fragrance. Family of: N/A Silage: intimate Verdict: Pass- longevity and silage is pitiful.

Bitter orange with florals and some herbal notes underneath on the opening. This lasts for quite a while and, after some time, the amber-y woody base kicks in. I could see this as being considered less interesting than some of TF's early deep scents but I think this is mostly a successful composition. Very unisex, leaning masculine maybe with the bitterness. I get okay longevity, around 3-5 hours. Projection is light but you can smell it floating around in the summer heat. It's right in line with performance of most other citrus-dominant summer scents. If rereleased, this would be in a TF blue bottle (if those still existed) as it's more akin to Neroli Portofino, Costa Azzura, etc. I'll give this a strong 7.75/10. Hard to find but it's a great summer alternative.

This juice opens with some nice spicy citruses; sounds funny I know, but it works. 5 minutes later the amber comes out from under the covers... for about 5 minutes. Then nothing - absolutely nothing, there is no amber to be found. Then, for the next 4 hours, you're left with a nice semi-sweet soap. After about 5 hours, that amber wakes up from another nap and you have that slightly sweet honey-chocolate vibe going on. Nice dry down, but I'm not sure it's worth the wait - or the price. Great quality fragrance, smells nice, and developes quite a bit. I'm just not sure I would commit to it.

I usually don't fancy colognes unless they get tinkered into something more than their usual hesperidic and tonic overtones. This one is beautiful and although the Fordian Private Blend Collection exudes a sort of detachment, this one perhaps takes me back to a time when people scented themselves in citruses and Provençal herbs. Rive d`Ambre differentiates itself by the infusion of cinnamon, ginger and saffron. The name befits the scent: the autumnal glow of cologne, golden flashes of a virtual amber and a slightly oriental twist. What could one ask for more?

Very lovely fragrance! Opens with a burst of citrus, mint and spices (tarragon and cardamom) which lasts a good 10 minutes on me and then calms down into a very nice soft spicy amber skin scent. I really enjoy this fragrance in warm sunny wheather as it is very bright. In my opinion, the name does not reflect what this fragrance really is. It is not at all one of those dark amber fragrance as the name could mislead someone. Expensive for what it is but I truly enjoy this one! Sillage: Soft Longevity: 5-6 hours

People don’t realise this, but the best part of this fragrance is the creamy dry down . Although I think the opening is very nice, I don’t think people give this enough time to settle. Some say this is very weak, I thought this was also the case at first, but it can surprise you. You think it’s gone but in reality it’s not.. it’s still there and other people can definitely smell it. My wife loves this on me. I just wish the citrus opening would last longer then it would be a 10 from me.

Citruses first with an added fresh spicy amber accord. Nice & pleasing. Common scent. Can't recall what fragrance smelled like it but Rive d'Ambre smells like a designer fragrance I've smelled before. Maybe YSL Elle but with citruses. Elle is better though. Good scent, definitely not worth the ridiculous asking price. "Like". Was this more affordable, I would've liked it more. But if you gonna act niche, you gonna get judged like one.

It opens on my skin with a burst of freshly squeezed lemon and bergamot, followed by squirts of slightly bitter oil from the skin of a zested orange that is tart, sweet and bright, all at once. Overall a Bright citruses masterpiece. Great longevity and very sophisticated fragrance that in no way is offensive in any setting!

No amber at all on me which is a letdown. I get citrus spices and a dash of mint. It's very subtle in the longevity and silage categories. I don't know why the perfumer was chosen who was mostly done cheaper designer stuff for Ed Hardy, RL and Arden. I don't think this was a wise choice or a wise name for this scent.

I smell pepper in the top notes. I cant believe there isnt any in this composition. To me, it's amber, citrus, and pepper with a very little Cardamom. I like the scent a lot but the sillage and longevity are very weak. I struggle to smell anything less then an hour later. Because of that, I wont buy a full bottle.

It's very hard not to like this. The scent is fantastic but the price is highly unlikeable. It smells like an Atelier scent and unfortunately the same Atelier performance. 4 or 5 hours with good projection for the first 2 and dies off as a skin scent a few hours after that. Citrus heaven with a devilish price tag.

Smells great. It’s an aromatic, minty, bitter orange. It’s somewhat linear and the dry down remains consistent. As others has stated longevity and silage is brutal. Since it’s hard to find and the price can be exorbitant, you’re better off spending your money elsewhere.

I like this fizzy, citrusy, effervescent scent. The 'put-down' so often thrown here - that it should have been packaged in a 'blue bottle' is actually high praise to me. And it's very light. Safe for the office. Citrus + herbs.

wow, I'm usually a TF groupie, but I've been so disappointed with his latest offerings! This is a nice and interesting frag, but it doesn't last! Price point+ lack of staying power= nope,nope,nope!

Summer in a bottle and maybe the best citruses ever: fresh, clean, funny - just perfect for hot days. Too pity it`s very light and after two hours is gone.

I’ve “liked” this, it should be a “love” as it’s a beautiful. Fresh citrus with amber perfectly blended. But the performance and sillage is woeful.

Surely this should be in one of the blue bottles. My first thoughts are thai salad. Bright citrus and herbal.

One of the most beautiful TFs there are. From the opener I get the smell of bitter oranges alongside a prominent green note that seems to depict the unripe fruit still hanging from the tree. However, there is a reserved sweetness, an amber undercurrent that carries the scent and differentiates it from hundreds of other citrus colognes that exist. The citruses are soft, rounded and fresh, never astringent. There on the skin, the oranges ripen and a fleshy sweetness emanates from the fruit. However, the scent settles quickly to the skin and becomes barely detectable in the air. From 1.5-2 hours, the scent is no longer detectable, even up close on skin. For a private blend, the scent can be forgiven for being relatively simple, but its performance cannot be overlooked. I've worn my decant frequently this summer and, even with overspraying, only one person has ever smelled Rive d'Ambre on me. Were I to own a full bottle, it would disappear in a flash.

What's interesting about this fragrance is that there is a floral quality to it... but there are no florals. Instead it's all citrus, herbs, and woods. That's about the only noteworthy thing about this fragrance, the illusion of florals. Otherwise, it's pretty safe, pretty boring, "good" stuff - not great, not bad, just good. Monodimensional and stagnant, bergamot and bitter orange sit over beds of cardamom and tarragon on a base of balsams and bright woody ambers. Not much happens with it, not much is said by it, its life is relatively short, clean, and simple. One could call this a cologne then, as the only purpose it would serve would be to freshen up the dapper gentleman after a shave or a bath. But, this is Tom Ford, so of course even as a very safe and very easy cologne it's priced like a high-end statement-making EdP. Add to this the fact that it was discontinued nearly as quickly as it was developed and launched, you would spend enormous amounts on the aftermarket for it. In other words, it came, it smelled fine, it was discontinued, we all have forgotten about it, and that's as it probably should be.

This starts off with a blast of bergamot. 5 minutes into this fragrance you will notice that this isn't really a unisex perfume. It later develops into a citrusy-floral type composition. Interestingly enough, the amber is absent throughout. Yes, absent. Longevity is about 4hrs which surprised me because I usually get good play from Tom Ford fragrances. I have received some very good compliments(3 different women). I think women would enjoy wearing this; men.....not too much.

This is uncool of me and I am usually not a fan of mixing or layering fragrances at all but this tomforf Atelier Rive d’Ambre (in layman’s terms) is better to me if I use about 1/3 ADG Profumo or just original Armani ADG and the rest TF Rive dambre. USUALLY DONT LIK MIXING fragrances, unless its just a single material like ‘Molecule __’ or product from one of those prfm compound / raw materials-selling websites.

It opens with a slight minty citrus freshness with a touch of amber and floral musk. It's very light and non descript and does not last. A poor effort.

Rive d’Ambre from Tom Ford’s his Atelier d’Orient line is a light elegant take on a classic eau de cologne with a twist tied up with a silken rope of mystery. The nose behind its creation is perfumer, Olivier Gillotin. He is known for creating 10 Corso Como, Cristobal for Balenciaga and Notorious for Ralph Lauren. Among his many perfumes is one of my favorites, Fath Pour L’Homme for Jacques Fath. (See my review Falling In Love With Fath on my blog Scents Memory) Classified as an Oriental for men and women Rive d’Ambre opens with a sparkling pop of citrus notes like the clash of cymbals and wind chimes in an exotic modern symphony. These notes are linear and come at you in a heady bright jumble of lemon, bergamot and bitter orange. This plays around on the skin for about 20 minutes and slowly the course of the opening they calm and are absorbed into a cocktail of cognac and amber. Spices of cardamom and tarragon add dimension to the fragrance as it falls to the skin at about 5 hours. In the dry down there is the warmth of tolu balsam and patchouli to cover and comfort the bones of what remains of the fragrance. This is not a complex or challenging fragrance but that does not make it uninteresting. On the contrary it is surprising in where it goes from that familiar eau de cologne opening into an exotic warm range. It is a perfect fragrance to wear in the tropics where the heat will open it up and add to its projection. In more temperate climates it would work best in summer. I can see how some folks were let down by this, considering the completely misleading name, "Rive d' Ambre." It's not really an amber fragrance at all. But I still like it. Rive d'Ambre smells like a freshly opened can of Sprite or 7Up, a sort of effervescent, fizzy, semi-sweet lemon and lime concoction. It seems composed with a soft touch, and while it's fresh and bubbly, its citrus notes never appear particularly sharp, due to a moderate addition of mint and a gentle orange blossom that rounds the edges. The reason why I think this deserves a second look is that while it's part of a genre (fresh citrus) that's flooded with competitors, it doesn't quite smell like the typical offering. It's not a 'sporty' or 'athletic' style of fragrance . It's too smooth for that. The rounded citrus notes and kind of carbonated fizz that accompanies them help Rive to stand out on its own. I feel like I could easily pick this out of a line-up in a blind test. The biggest draw back to this one is its projection and longevity, which could both do with an improvement. After the initial hour, it stays close to the skin, and doesn't seem to last more than 5 hours. For some, this may be the deal-breaker, and understandably so since you'd be paying top dollar for it. Regardless, I'll give Rive d'Ambre a few more shots once the weather heats up, as the climate may drastically affect its performance. It's really a spring/summer scent anyway, and since I love the way it smells, I'm hoping it blossoms in the heat and projects better as a result. If it does, I'll certainly consider it. Temporary Verdict: Thumbs up despite the mediocre performance and worth sampling if you're looking for a smooth citrus fragrance.

Rive D’Ambre opens with a bright burst of citrus that creates a very becoming first impression. The citrus quickly feels warmed by Amber, which gives it the character of many a men’s grooming product. It’s not exactly barbershop, but it does feel very aftershave-ish. However, the citrus opening is the star of the show. It’s worth seeking out for Tom Ford fans, as this feels so far removed from many of his other offerings and is the closest the house has come to creating a mass appeal blue scent in my experience. As the fragrance’s wear goes on, the more Oriental facets emerge. Rive D’Ambre becomes more balsamic and the Amber, of course, grows stronger. It’s quite a delight to breathe in deeply and be treated to a scent that is rich and deep, yet remains noticeably tropical. Shame this is discontinued as it feels like a rare fragrance suitable for everyday wear that would shine as the weather gets cooler, but remain suitable for spring and summer. Projection seems to remain pretty close to the skin, does not feel like it’d be intrusive if worn on too hot of a day. Overall, an unexpected treat, I’m happy to have been able to take a dip along this bank.

Oh no... no... I so very much wanted to like this, but I couldn't be more disappointed. This is citrus alright, but it is also waxy, synthetic, like a scented candle. And it's also a skin scent, with barely-there kind of silage. And it's also fleeting, lasting for about a maximum of 3 hours on my skin. If you prefer fresh, realistic citrus like I do, stick to the Hermes. Do not blind buy this just because it is super rare. I did, now I wish my money back. Edit: I just realized Memo's Winter Palace has the exact same smell profile: warm citrus + amber. But Winter Palace has a much much more dense silage and lasts wayyy longer too. So if you want the same thing but stronger, go for Winter Palace. Edit again: The more I left it on my skin, the more I appreciate it. What makes it slightly more unique than a zillion other citrus is that little bit of tarragon and cognac. Very very faint, but detectable and classy. But you'd really have to drown yourself in it with multiple sprays...
