Rose de Chine

I’m genuinely surprised with how much hate this is getting hahahaah. Anyway, I like it as far as the Tom Ford roses go. It starts off with a fruity peony and dries down to a rose with something almost tea-like in its pungency. If you get a bunch of loose leaf tea fresh from a sealed tin, you can kinda smell this wafting bitterness underscoring a sweet vapor. Once it dries down, the kind of smell it reminds me of are like unlit incense sticks we used to have back home when we would light some by my grandfather’s picture. It’s sweet but not like an edible sweet, stuffy without really assaulting your nose, and had this weird texture of being ‘once warm.’ I didn’t really think of it as a “Chinese scent” until like that dry down and I was like “oh...” and I remember like visiting the temples and all that. The incense in those temples were so distinct from the incense in church. I always liked it more. You know, those dark pink sticks! I had to buy myself a bottle when my sales rep told me it was going the way of Rose De Russie a year or so back. I don’t regret the purchase. Like rose D’Amalfi, I had to give myself six overlapping sprays to get the best office hours performance. It doesn’t do too well in the heat. Sure it projects but it doesn’t go with sweat most of the time. So, when I spray it, I tell my office mates to “eat lunch without me,” hahahaha as I go for a place that doesn’t involved as much walking. My only issue really is the skin scent part maybe seven hours in because it DOES begin to smell like incense ash in a bad way, but other than that, I really don’t mind it. Hope this helps! It's interesting, because I'm not one for spicy scents usually, nor am I particularly keen on rose (I like it, but it doesn't rank in my top 5 favourite floral notes) and yet I find myself quite enamoured by this! Maybe it's the "Tom Ford DNA" (can't put my finger on it but it's definitely there, and I enjoy it), or maybe it's just how well this is constructed, or both, who knows? Either way the spice doesn't overpower the florals, since the peony is there to give the rose a helping hand in terms of retaining an air of freshness, and for me it puts Rose de Chine in a league of its own when it comes to this kind of scent - it's equal parts fresh, floral and spicy right out the gate. I usually find spicy notes trample all over any other notes allegedly present in the mix, but that's very much not the case here. The price tag is a kick in the teeth as is usually the case with Tom Ford, but I think I can juuuust about justify it to myself since the longevity is on point... the florals drop off after ~5-6 hours, leaving in its wake a mellow, comforting, soft spicy yet still subtly sweet skin scent. This phase sticks arounds for a good couple of hours too so from start to finish you get a longevity of about 9-10 hours. Perfect for autumn-winter and probably even spring if you're from a colder climate. Edit: can't believe I forgot to mention this but the silage is also quite strong; I was testing four(!) other fragrances at the same time but this won out - I could catch whiffs of it without even lifting my arm!

[450] Rose de Chine is a smooth, luxurious amber-rose scent. The rose is the focal point, and it develops beautifully throughout this scent, with the other notes simply serving to complement it. Initially a fresh, dewy peony-rose scent, RDC opens with a light rose note, reminiscent of rosewater, and sweet peony. It is slightly green yet sweet, pleasant, but underwhelming. However, it develops beautifully, becoming a rich, jammy rose scent, bolstered by an opulent, spicy amber base. The rose note is sweet but deep, getting progressively powdery as it develops. The amber base is balsamic and rich, complementing the rose to perfection. The amber-rose accord is refined and classical, yet has a light touch - it is nicely wearable. It fades to a slightly animalic amber skin scent after a while with a whisper of rose remaining until final fade. Sillage and longevity are moderate. Unisex as in Middle Eastern tradition, RDC is an utterly elegant transeasonal rose scent. Light yet rich, timeless and elegant, this is an excellent, nuanced, well-balanced rose scent. Beautiful in its simplicity. 4/5.

Very unhappy to report: Estée Lauder has discontinued Rose de Chine. Why does Tom Ford always have to discontinue its best releases?! It drives me insane. Rose de Chine is a stunning amber floral oriental fragrance that is suitable for either sex. It is a CLASSIC Tom Ford silhouette, with deep amber surrounded by pungent unisex floral notes. Sound familiar? It’s what the brand became illustrious for. Rose de Chine opens with a note of peony and eventually settles into a rose and tea fragrance with amber undergirding the other notes. Rose de Chine was one of those rare modern TF releases that could actually justify its retail price. So disheartened seeing it go. Another one bites the dust. But hey, at least we have an Electric Cherry release that smells like a Bath and Body Works fragrance teenagers 🤦♂️ I will be cherishing my small 50 ml bottle of Rose de Chine

I really like it! I’ve really been into myrrh fragrances lately and in this one, the myrrh and the rose really play hand in hand. And the peony is definitely leaving its impression as well. Somehow, this fragrance manages to be kind of smokey and kind of soapy clean all at once. It’s kind of funny because it’s both different than something that I would be used to, but it also doesn’t feel like it’s breaking any barriers. It’s a great performer on me as well. Definitely fits the quality of the Tom Ford Private Line. The rose is reminiscent of Noir de Noir, Rose de Russie and Cafe Rose (Private Line version)

I’ve never been into Tom Ford fragrances, but this one got me. I walked by the display and took a quick spritz thinking that it will be just like all the others from his collection. To my surprise, this fragrance got me. It lingered on, I kept sniffing my wrist throughout the day. I smell chypre, peony, rose flowers and patchouli, a sexy oriental evening fragrance, I was hooked. I went back to the store a few days later and purchased the full size bottle. I hope it will stay part of the collection, if not I’ll have to buy a back up.

It is one of the best perfumes I have ever smelled. It's a rose with a little bit of spice, but it's so well blended and pretty. The longevity and silage are the best from all the perfumes I have tried. Really a complement getter. Honestly the price is a little too much for me to keep buying, considering I am still studying, so If anybody has a dupe in mind that I can get my hands on in Eastern Europe then hit me up. I checked out the dupes list here but I can't buy the ones that are listed here on Notino, Douglas or in Sephora.

Sexy, sexy, sexy and romantic. When I first sprayed it my brain said, "that's weak, what did I just waste my money on?" C'mon Tom, what happened? I was about to call Tom and ask for my money back. About 20 minutes later, the most soft, elegant scent was swirling all around me. The intensity definitely increases from initial spray. I stopped myself and said, "Now we're talking." This is the TF I know...the myrrh softens the sharp floral edges. Well done TF!!!! Beautiful creation..

This reminds me of rose petal jam from my childhood and toned down Bulgarian rose oil. It’s sweet and very rosey not really in a vintage way or old style perfume way. It is rose through and through, very clean scent but with a little spicy kick. It’s got myrrh so if you don’t like that smoky quality myrrh sometimes gives off you might not like it. I can see this working well on a man. I think it is very pleasant and will probably work better in the spring. Recommend it!

If you like Rose you will love this. It’s kind of spicy. The opening is a distant cousin to MFK oud satin mood but it doesn’t smell like it but seems familiar. After a while it dries down to a rosey baby powder scent. For those of you that’s familiar with the lotion called Baby Magic, it’s that plus’s the base notes. I love it.

An amber-floral that smells like a Grimm fairy tale. You've stumbled upon the witch's garden. The tendrils of the rose bushes grapple around you, leaving cuts upon your pale flesh. The beauty of the garden - the scent of roses and peonies and the cold midnight air and the full, heavy moon - keep you spellbound.

I am in love with this fragrance. Bought 2 bottles and a travel spray. Can't stop reaching for it. This is basically a rosy, spicy, reduced sugar loukhoum fragrance. It's elegant yet sweet, sexy, flirty and warm. An addictive and inviting balsamic sweet rose.

Amber and rose in a chypre style. Take Arabian Wood and add sweet rose. A like, not a love. Smells like it could be a Gucci Alchemist Garden fragrance. Feminine leaning in my personal opinion, but tastes are subjective

You can definitely smell the peony and rose. It's not sweet at all but more bitter and a bit sour. Its not fresh airy roses. I a mixture of the 2 fl9wers with black tea. I personally like it. Not a safe blind buy

After years of searching for a rose perfume that actually just smells of fresh roses, I finally find one...and it's been discontinued! 😭 Please don't stock up from Ebay - I want to be able to buy them all.

Rose de Chine is one of my all time favorite perfumes. Smells like a bubbly glass of Moët et Chandon Champagne Rosé Impérial. God life's a dream wearing this one.

The peony note mix with rose in Rose de Chine smell quite unique, this fragrance definitely leaning more feminine, but if you love rose scent, it's worth a try.

Finally, the perfect substitution for my beloved, discontinued Gucci II.

I agree with 90sbanana I tried it just launched in my city at the beginning of February. my expectations were high and by the notes of everyone in the "private garden collection," I thought that Rose de Russie will be my favorite, and the other ones will be just another mainstream rose fragrances. Well, I was wrong like, very very wrong. Just to make an example how I would relate to something more visual of the other twos: - Rose d ́Amalfi: let me say it's a lovely fragrance, shy, but beautiful, like a Portrait of a young girl with a rose is a painting by Johann Heinrich Tischbein. That's how in a quick review I will put it. - Rose de Russie: It's a person who has a hobby and knows exactly what he/she wants doesn't go with the trends it is hard to make to change his/hers point of view. Like Ivan Morozov (taking the nationality) Just with this, I will continue with Rose de Chine. These fragrances at the first sight maintain a low profile if the SA shows you the three sisters. In the beginning, I got the smell of something like an herbal tea, the Matcha Kaori "Chazutsu" and that's it, at the beginning like the Matcha Tea you feel it strange but then it became addictive. the first hour the note of tea maintains well, it develops in the form of a cozy day just feeling the breeze and getting the smell of your tea in your hands with the Chinese Peony. Softly the Rose and Labdanum start to make more presence showing that the name is because there's a rose in this fragrance, after 6 hours keeps the two with the Myrrh in the background just feeling like a personal fragrance, something natural and beautiful. In sillage, the first 6 hours is a little bubble not so big like Rose Prick, the other 6 hours its a personal smell if you hug a friend he/she will smell it, but this is not huge like RP so I see it more for a romantic date in a restaurant, or something more just with close friends. Perfect for Spring, Summer and Autumn for day and night. Totally Unisex because the Tea and Myrrh give it a masculine touch but the Peony and the Rose counteract that notes. Just the bad thing for me (personal opinion) is that I would love a superior sillage like Angel of Thierry Mugler. In the end, after 5 tries I end up buying a full bottle because it is addictive like the Matcha Tea!!! rate 8.5/10

Opens with a prevalent red/pink floral nose. Peonies and various roses blended in here to create an extremely feminine scent. Powdery undertones to support it. The dry down is a lot more pleasant to me, I draw a comparison to when you first enter a pub and smell the air. It's a good fragrance, not exactly unique though and for the price point I would be wanting something memorable. Definitely opens feminine, though it's more of a mature feminine. I could picture a middle aged woman wearing this, the same as I could a well dressed early adult. For me however, the dry down is purely unisex, which surprised me considering how floral it opens. The powdery note is allowed to shine a little more with almost an incense note in there accompanying the pleasant peony that can be observed throughout. So much so that I would consider wearing this as a male, the dry down is actually very nice. It does lack performance, the top notes only moderately project & gets worse within a few hours, sitting close to the skin. It's been about 5 hours and it's sitting pretty close to my skin. Over spraying this would definitely help it in the projection department but I'm not so sure about the length of it. For the price range I would opt for something different. I'm not an expert on feminine/women leaning fragrances but there is definitely something out there that recreates this for cheaper. It's a great fragrance but has minimal memorability in my opinion. The use of peony and addition of a smoky overture poses as a pleasant intimate fragrance that is inoffensive and opens very feminine.

Turkish rose loukoums with oriental tea in a Chinese porcelain cup, anyone? An exquisite bouquet of peony “Yunnan” and roses, with a balsamic and spicy hint. Happens to be my favorite from the line, since I finished my travel spray first out of the 3 I got. I had to search for what is a Chinese peony Yunnan exactly, because like many I have never heard of it, seen or smelled it, and it seems many have left reviews without looking at the notes in details. This is what brings the “tea leaves notes” many wrote about, and to me it gives an oriental and aquatic feel to the perfume, overall. From what I smell, I suppose both fresh Chinese peonies and dry-tea peony Yunnan were used in this perfume. Rose de Chine is delicate yet powerful. Edit : One spray over the head and/or a small drop on the wrist is enough to leave a strong trail, personally it gave me a headache because of the strong rose, a little too artificial for some reason. I don’t feel like purchasing a full bottle. Overall good quality, pricey but value is fine. _____ Sillage, longevity, projection : 6.5/10 Originality : 8/10 Quality, value : 7/10 7/10

Excellent spicy rose, grounded with myrrh and amber. Very oriental feel, therefore the reference to China in the name is apt (or any other Oriental reference would do). The rose is deep, patchouli deepens it. It has an oudy smokiness, and a soft, warm amber in the base. Wintry feel, persistent, excellent longevity (on me up to 10hrs). This is a sexy rose, that demands a certain confidence in wearing. Probably not the most original composition (it reminds me a lot of Dark Rose from Czech & Speak, that I literally adored many years ago) but... It's an excellent composition, with good ingredients. For me Rose de Chine has been a great discovery, as Tom Ford's are often a hit or miss, especially in the most recent releases (I mean, Violet Blonde , Black Orchid, Portofino, Jasmin Rouge , Tobacco Leather are great fragrances issued 10 or 15 years ago), and RdC is a 2022 release.

I am not a lover of Rose in fragrances and when there is a mix with peonies, I like when peonies dominate. Here I almost do not feel peonies. But I feel citruses at the opening: at the beginning they are crispy and lift up a feminine rose (like you usually have in light female perfumes), but then the citruses show their bitter size and battle with the Rose. I start liking the fragrance when the florals are dead. At this moment the mix of sweet amber and labdanum takes over, with a secondary layer of myrrh and sweet cardamom. It is truly unisex and make me want have more of it. This mix could be a perfume on its own, it reminds me of older Tom Fords when they did not care to make sweet mass appealing juices. A review after a brief encounter at Nordstrom this evening; between this and Rose Prick and the Amalfi one, I decided I preferred to wear Rose de Chine. Loved the opening, an interesting, slightly fizzy and spicy—and with the unusual pairing of myrrh—a smoky, incense driven rose. The dry down was less appealing. Rose de Chine slowly faded away. I did not pick up any new notes, just a soft version of the compelling opening. Since I loved the opening, I kept going back to the single spray on my wrist.....and huff like a mad woman. I like Rose de Chine (better than the other two rose Fords I was sampling), but not enough to want a bottle. Although I would like to wear this again, when there’s less competition in the air of a busy Nordstrom.

I disagree with the negative comments about Tom Ford Rose De Chine. It’s not unpleasant at all. It’s also not sweet rather, it’s a refined floral with a soft, slightly oriental touch. The smokiness in it comes from the myrrh, giving off an incense-like quality that enhances its oriental character. It reminds me of vintage folding bamboo fans from China with a delicate scent, nostalgic yet elegant. Despite that, it still smells expensive and sophisticated. The name truly captures the essence of a “rose of China.”

Very masculine at first spray on me but it's dries down more feminine, dark, very dry rose. I like it but to me it's more mature, a bit... JUST a bit sweet rose, very woody and very long lasting. you just need 2 sprays because one day I spray like 10 sprays (which I normally do with TF perfumes. cause somes are NOT long lasting) and I ended up choked myself and people around me, I'm so sorry😭 it lasts me 9+ hrs. with intense projection. mfg: 2022

Warm amber floral. Slightly powdery, slightly smoky, slightly oriental. Unique melding of rose & peony in the overture but peony & powder triumph in dry down. Scent remains pretty linear throughout, though quite elegant in a quiet luxury way. Powdery peony keeps the curtain parted just enough to allow rose to peek through with one eye as the audience inhales deeply to catch a whiff. Poor little rose. Where art thou?

I kinda like this. The top is a pretty peony rose combo with a slightly powdery ionone mid. The drydown is reminds me of a less spicy la nuit dlhomme, with slightly less coumarin. Although this feels like a fragrance that was created to appeal to women, it’s very neutral. Its style isn’t constrained by any gender borders, if a woman wears it, it’s sexy. If a man wears it, it’s sexy.

This is the best of 3 recent roses by TF. This is why: - this is unique rose like nothing else. I have dozens of rose perfumes and this is unique: it is fresh and warm at the same time, light and sticky, great balance - bottle is fantastic; - longevity is great for "not too dark: rose fragrance. The price is off course too high, but at least you would pay for something unique.

The peony is sharp in the opening, something juicy and almost spicy. It dries down to a beautiful fresh powdery rose that's not stuffy. I think it's a lot to take in at first but if you can get past the opening I think it's worthwhile and very pretty. Unfortunately, it does not sit well on my skin and tends to give me a headache. I think it would suit a more assertive person.

As much as I love rose scents, I fear this one really isnt it. It smells like your rich smoker aunties couch. Its almost fabricy and its so peppery every person over the age of 70 may flock to you. Its not a young scent, but its definitely mature. I think uts good in SOME scenarios, but overall its extremely pungent. Its more pepper than rose. It smells like cigarettes.

This is one of the nicest, most pleasant Tom Fords I think I've ever smelt! There's not hidden surprises, no wierdness, no snark, NONE of that. Sweet floral rose, delightful resinous myrrh and not all that much else! It's beautiful, no doubt, but possibly TOO beautiful. It needs more woodsiness or something like that. Stunning, but not for me.

I personally liked it a lot, it's a slightly spicy rose. However, its not unique or ground breaking, it's just a nice rose! It's dark, slightly smoky, versatile, "safe", unisex. It's definitely kinda realistic and slightly "dewy", but not as much as the Diptyque's Rose. Peony makes it more feminine.

Definitely more feminine than the other rose fragrances from TF. A bit more "girly" than "mature woman" type of flower scent. I would recommend TF Rose Prick any day before this for a clean, nice rose scent, or TF Roses d'Amalfi which is more subtle (yet a beatiful) rose and flower scent.

Smells like a lighter and less spicy rose prick a spring version in a way. It's absolutely beautiful but I have to admit it is my least favorite of the collection due to it being so similar to rose prick. I would rather have that instead

Fizzy peony opens to an incense-forward & spicy rose. The myrrh is quite complimentary to both accords, never leans too light or heavy. Arms length sillage, lasts around 5 hrs on skin & clothes. Best suited for spring & autumn.

Smells like a gentrified Turkish delight with an aura of tea, a fantastic long lasting fragrance with gentlemanly projection, but probably not worth the 200 euro asking price.

This reminds me of earlier Tom Ford releases like Oud Fleur and Lys Fume. Quite nice, and has that almost vintage quality, but this is my least favorite of the three new ones.

It has a chalk-like quality from the myrrh that reminds me of Nasomatto China White, plus a touch of tart fruitiness from Oud Fleur—the best from the trio of roses.

It is a happy scent. I thought it was interjecting enough to Own a bottle When I just sprayed it. However, to my Nose it dries down to twilly d’hermes eau poivree.

I found this one really nice too. Nice. Yeah not exactly lavish praise but the best I could muster. I thought it was the most forgettable of the line, but as terrible as that sounds, it's really not. I definitely have to give the disclaimer that I need to try this more. Okay so same impression of the rose note in here, it's infused, not overly sweet or jammy, which in this context is a really classy move. This is probably the most floral (SA mentioned peony to me) of the three, but I did get a labdanum type note in the top/mid so I guess this the 'ambery rose' of the bunch? It's good. Yeah but I was least interested in this one (until d'amalfi dried down on my skin) but I have to revisit. I think the take away is that these are competent and somewhat interesting releases from the loud, oud rose type biz I might've expected and smelled a million times before.

I really thought I would like this one, so much so that I blind bought it. For a rose fragrance, I get very little rose. The Chinese peony in the opening is very strong, a little powdery, and overpowers the rose in many ways. Slowly the ambery spice rises to the top with a fizzy, slightly sour myrrh warmth on the bottom. Each of these components is high quality, but the mix of them doesn't work for me. It's definitely unusual and distinctive, so I could see this being a great stand-out signature scent if this works for you. For met, it feels a little unbalanced and mature.

Dry, not strong, not entirely reminiscent of rose, more pharmacy-counter rose. It’s “fine”. The first few minutes warn of a headache, maybe just me. I didn’t find it entirely long lasting. EDIT: Enjoyed it better on the second wear. floral, but the peony maybe overpowers the rose. It's still not a complex rose. I might see how I go with a second wear. EDIT: 5 months later I initially had this as "like" but now it's "ok". I feel there is a sugary sweetness I'm not resonating with. It's a rose but a very flat rose. Not as complex as I'd like.

I liked this one best of the new Roses, but it reminded me of something I had in my collection. Then it hit me, it reminded me of Starlit Mandarin and Honey by Jo Malone. The notes aren’t similar, but they are strikingly similar in smell. I believe Starlit Mandarin has a tobacco note, which this one smelled like too despite it not being listed. Anyways, definitely try before you buy, because this collection left me unimpressed.

Took me a while to finally have the courage to try this after double failures of the other two in this line. Anyway, I think I sort of like it. Not too much rose. It’s kinda sourish but not in a citrusy way. Will come back to add more afterwards. Edit. Very much too soon it turn unpleasant. This was for the on skin spray; the on clothing spray was okay. Edit. The silage was moderate and longevity about six hrs.

It's a sledgehammer assault on the senses. A scent like this should not be this screamingly loud. This is by far the most obnoxious of all Tom Ford's perfumes, and that's quite a high bar. Somewhere in there there's a nice smell, but this is just absolutely brutal. It even burns my skin. Perhaps dabbed on with a roller it could be OK but I'll probably just wear something else.

I appreciate that this a bit spicy, however, I'm turned off by the powdery scent. It ages me (30F). Reminds me of a rich auntie. It's an expensive bottle so I'd like to potentially layer with something else to lessen the powder and brighten it up. I agree with Kenudigme that something is missing. Any suggestions on what to layer with? I'm thinking vanilla and citrus?

A rich, but dry, rose. The peony appears and then goes away, on my skin. I don't like labdanum but it's not making much of an impact here. The myrrh grounds the flowers. Sadly this isn't a very exciting take on a rose scent. I prefer some others, especially TF's Cafe Rose. But for some, this might be the right combination for them.
