Rose de Russie

I think Tom Ford's leather accord relies heavily on cypriol, because I get a strong whack of it here, as I do from all of the other TF leathers I've smelled. Not that it's bad, but it isn't what I expected. I prefer Rose de Chine [EDIT: Nope, I prefer this!], however this is more wearable for me out and about, at work etc. as a 43 year old man. Anyway, I was lucky enough to get a grey market bottle for 150 euros so I'll be eeking it out carefully over the years. Update: Giving it a proper wear today, and it smells 100 times better on skin than on card or clothes. Imagine the aftermath of a Shakespearean tragicomic massacre, with one guy left alive with a precious rose he salvaged clenched between his teeth to take home to his loved one. That's what this is. I've realised I love this so so much, and for the first time I feel like it's "me" through and through, perhaps a signature scent finally. Not only have I had several compliments from clients over the last two days, one of them said "it's perfect for you". It's bold, but not aggressive, and the jammy, dripping rose on the leather base is to die for. This is waaaaay better than Ombré Leather whilst sharing a little of the leather DNA. Re. comparisons to Rose et Cuir... It's like comparing two different fruit tarts. It's the same principle but one has apple and the other apricot. Here we have rose, the inaccurately named Rose et Cuir has geranium, and minty geranium to boot, so the resemblance is there, but it's more of a genre resemblance, and one certainly cannot substitute for the other. I prefer Rose de Russie, it's jammier and way easier to wear, while Rose et Cuir is perhaps more technically impressive. Another update: I reckon there's a hefty dose of cypriol here. Shem by Nishane does the same trick, using cypriol with rose to make a rosey leather, but Nishane overdid it, this is much better, although not actually any cheaper.

After a long time of questioning whether or not I should get it, as I found a reliable seller for an unopened bottle of this for a much cheaper price compared to what it originally was sold for. I wasn’t sure about it because, while I’m a fan of Tom Ford, I don’t know if they’re always worth the price. And also because of the fact that I don’t particularly want to wear leather scents. Nevertheless, the collector in me wanted to give it a go, knowing that it was discontinued. Why not, it’s my birthday month anyway, so why not treat myself? It’s definitely not a ‘rose garden’ type of scent. In that sense, I feel like it shouldn’t be a part of the ‘Private Rose Garden’ collection. The rose is present, but it’s definitely playing nicely together with the leather, wood and the pepper – all of it nicely balanced out. I was a bit worried about that as well because I don’t really enjoy fragrances where the pepper is too strong, which I heard in some of the comments of some of the people. But it wasn’t like that to me. Yes, it was a bit prickly in the beginning, but nothing overwhelming. In the drydown, the freshness comes forward more, with the smoky, leathery touches still there but perhaps more on the background. Hours and hours later, like ten hours later, surprisingly, the fresh rose is what’s still standing the most as a skin scent. Projection doesn’t seem to be huge, but longevity is great! I’m pleased with it! Is it among my favorite Tom Fords? No. But it’s not a blind buy fail, and I still love it. And it’s great to have in my collection for the fact that it’s discontinued.

rosequeen hits a bricks & mortar store for the first time in 2 years and buys a Tom Ford scent at full retail. This is actually the first full bottle of any Tom Ford scent I've ever bought. Until now, I've always made do with the little 4ml bottles decant sellers offer on eBay. Rose de Russie is that good a fragrance, and that's still so despite its now unfortunate name, considering Russia invaded Ukraine this very week. (All things "Russie" don't have as much of a romantic appeal as they had even 10 days ago.) I didn't walk into Neiman Marcus thinking I was going to buy this either. I strolled up to the Tom Ford counter like a large fly to a spider, thinking I'd spray it and walk away briskly like I usually do. But I love spicy rose scents and this is a good one. I'll go with a few other reviewers who said that it may have a bit too much pepper, but better that than too much rose. You can always add some other rose, like Van Cleefs Rose Velours or something if you think you want more rose in it. I don't though. And like some other reviewer whose words I skimmed, it is a rather scratchy patchouli. I like that too. And unlike some of Tom Ford's other offerings, this one feels like a real fragrance and not a gimmick. Thoughtful, intense, and definitely not ordinary. So far it lasts 5 hours on my skin. It had better, since I bought it at full retail. Next day note: It fades away abruptly at 7 hours, or at least did last night. It probably wore itself out.

Woot! Been trying to land this baby for awhile now since I first encountered it during pre-release at a Tom Ford boutique. There was no question that this scent is a must have since its charm is beguiling and fun. After what seemed like too long and a fly-by before getting a bottle, it is so beautiful to wear. On the paper strip, the leather is not raunchy and there is sort of an Alamo style dried desert chypre with the sweet though polished rose that is like gold sparks on a hot stone. Sizzling. The Voice of The Snake by Gucci and Indompte by Givenchy share the same raw, clean, leathery oud facet that dominates in wear on skin. Ever so lightly rich and sweet, a tart raspberry rose mixes with a chocolaty leather and a hint of almondy marzipan twirls between like a soft poudre.

Purchased this last Thursday at David Jones and I must admit I’m very impressed. Starts off as a peppery rose with an underlying spicy element to it which does add long lasting depth to this fragrance. The leather and wood notes are also prominent very early for mine and clearly last through drydown. That juice colour is amazingly vibrant and another reason I fell for this one. Apparently released with the other two private garden fragrances as part of a St Valentines Day sales pitch here in Oz. I’m sure it will do well.

This was a really pleasant surprise to me! It lasts longer than I ever would have thought even though I did go into it thinking it'd wear off after like 20 minutes lol. The rose is the star of the show easily here but you do still get a little leather. I somehow think this would suit amazing for the horse races as it's just a beautiful fresh rose scent. I feel it's mostly feminine but could be unisex as well and good for warmer weather. This is a love for me.

Peppery, slightly spicy, delicious dirty rose. A pungent, smoky rose. Sophisticated. Intoxicating. Dangerous. There’s something nefarious about her. You can smell it. It emanates from her pores like billowing black smoke from an extinguished fire. Succulent smoky smoke you inhale as deeply as you can because it tastes so delectable. Maybe it’s the roses at its center, petals singed & curled...once blood red, now burnt black...like her vengeful heart.

TF's Rose de Russie is a very ashy, green stem of the rose scent if I had to sum it up. The dry down is pretty much 'class-ed' and dressed up incense and pepper. Solid fragrance with a good perfumery backbone going on and a tad Middle Eastern and yet ultra-French smelling at the same time. 5 stars and class in a bottle personified!!!

Was genuinely and pleasantly surprised by this. It didn't last on me all that much (maybe Melbourne's current state of humidity.. you can always have too much of a good thing in a muggy climate) but the opening of pepper just lasted the entire ride. Light rose in the background. Felt like strength. Has an undeniable presence.

There's something about this scent that brings to mind the now defunct Amouage Tribute attar. This reads as more rosy and sweet, grounded by woods and roots and smoke, whereas Tribute felt more wood/vetiver/leather forward. I appreciate the more diaphanous aura vs the denser attar, but I do love Tribute much more overall.

A blast of pepper from the start with rose supporting it. As the pepper calms it turns into a leather-rose. I liked this the least out of the trio at first, but it has really grown on me and I will most likely purchase. 1. Russie 2. Chine (close second) 3. Amalfi - plastic candy rose that turns into powder.

Easily my favorite of the three new fragrances. This is actually pretty stunning, if I’m honest. Interesting, too, that most of the floral quality of this fragrance comes from the pepper and not from the rose. Also, for a recent Tom Ford, this is pretty powerful in terms of performance.

Guerlain Santal Royal + Amouage Interlude Man dry down + Tom Ford Tuscan Leather without the artificially sweet and tart raspberry note. Much smoother, more balanced and well-blended than each of the above three individual perfumes. NAAAAAAIIIIIIIIISSSSSSEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unique rose fragrance. Very realistic rose. It’s a fresh rose bouquet. Doesn’t smell like any rose fragrance I have smelled before. It smells like fresh cut roses. It’s a lot better then Roja’s, FDP etc...

This is NOT a realistic rose. It's a dark rose. I love it, but not for the price. It's mainly rose with leather and some spicy edge to it. Pretty. Powerful.

Most realistic rose I’ve ever smelled. Beyond next level for me. I adore it.

im crazy loyal with tom ford, ive tried all three in this line many times, (personally i find this one relatively better than the other 2) hoping them to grow on me. but cant wrap my head to buy it. tom ford's too rushed making new releases. its simply impossible to make good quality if you rush things. good things take time. i think its a pity that they are wasting tons of money marketing and packaging while ignoring the quality, smell and longevity which are all deteriorating. tom ford please, focus on making old good quality perfumes, a true perfume addict are more than happy to keep purchasing good old ones, as well as the patience waiting for SLOW release. u dont need to rush yourself keep inventing cheaply made new releases. a true perfume addict cares only the quality, not "whats the most updated"

As the best in the new line, this one is at first surprisingly sharp and fresh, and not very rosy (though none are). It mellows but never loses a sense of the individual notes. However I agree that it's a close combination of Rose Prick and Ombre Leather. In my opinion, it improves on both. RP was oddly dusty for me, and Ombre aggressive and furniture like. They also had abysmal sillage and just okay longevity. RdR manages better longevity and sillage both, without resorting to anything harsh. In fact its smooth blend of notes is surprisingly sophisticated and makes for perhaps the most suitable feminine leather scent I can think of. If you're looking for true rose, go to Diptyque, though waiting through the hours on this one rewards you with a small trail in the drydown.

The lovechild of Amouage and Roja Dova. Thick rubbery gasoline leather, reminiscent of the old leathers from yesteryear (Hermès Bel Ami, etc). It's still loaded with isobutyl quinoline, and has a sharp attack of black pepper in the opening, but is modernised compared to Bell Ami which had that now dated carnation note I don't detect much rose but it's 'softened' 😂 by something, maybe the rose? I laugh at the word softened because this is not a shy retiring fragrance. It's like a highwayman in smell and stature. I think I like it but I'm a little scared of it. Edit: the rose appears in the moderately softer drydown, after the pepper and gasoline has finished attacking you.

This fragrance gives off a somewhat grungy but still elegant leathery rose. Opens with a fresh burst of pepper and a somewhat spicy rose trailing close behind, followed by a soft leathery note that adds a masculine touch and some depth to this fragrance. The leather note is never too strong, but the pepper does fade a bit after 2-3 hours and the fragrance starts smelling more fresh, almost like a rose tea. Very unique and keeps your interest. Very good performance that lasts 7+ hours on skin and has consistent moderate sillage which gives you whiffs throughout the day. Worth giving a sniff if you're into more masculine rose fragrances.

I am in no means a perfume expert, but this one reminds me of what will be if Tuscan Leather had a baby! 😄 It is a love from a second date, I let it stay on me for a day, lost it somewhere in the eight hour but than I took a shower and this thing just woke up on my skin. Very interesting.. So the next day I went and got it from my local Cosmetics Company Store. The removal of this perfume because it contains the name Russia is INSANITY! Wokeness will be the end of everything.

I love this. Masculine leaning, the rose is buried under peppery leather. Fresh cracked pepper that’s crisp and invigorating, blended well with smooth leather (thankfully unlike ombré this doesn’t smell like jasmine) with just a touch of smoke. I’m very impressed with this one. For a female it’d be harder to pull off, but definitely softens up into the drydown as the pepper subsides and the leather comes out. 8.5/10

I think this is a very interesting rose fragrance. For anyone in the UK - To me this smells like the Duel ride at Alton Towers (this ride is now called The Curse, not sure if it still has the same smell!) It's not even a little bit, like it smells exactly like the ride used to.

Not sure why, but the juice has been gradually turning from pink to a light gray over time. I bought it in January 2023 — back then it was a soft purple, and now it’s completely gray. The cap was a bit loose, could that be the reason? I’ve always kept it stored inside the box.

Pepper overpowered and too sharp for the nose. Hard to really like it to wear often. Not an easy wear.

First spray. One thing. The only thing I could think.... IsoButyl Quinoline nightmare. (and I love IBQ) Here me out though, this is a stripped back, raw and modern (if a little lazy) leather accord which is predominantly one material IBQ. Now I'm being a little harsh calling it lazy, this is a well made perfume, a deliberate overdose and stylistically on trend with a certain perfume I didn't like initially but now LOVE!!! So let's talk about Frederic Malle/Jean Claude Ellena's Rose & Cuir. I get that the 'reminds me of' section here is full of R&C associations and it can't help but remind anyone of that, it's a simplistic transparent rose with a massive scratchy, smokey, mossy, leathery IBQ note. Crucial difference for me is that rose and Cuir is much more leaning into the geranium (minus the minty facet) aspect of rose, but then giving a sweet, raspberry jam at times too. This it still that infused, lighter more PEA rose, like a rosewater, being dommed in quite a savage way by the leather note/accord/material. Although it's an overdose and as I said I like the material and this style, it just feels a bit too grubby, oily, like a mechanics discarded rag. I'm not saying it doesn't have nuance and I will have to try it again because R&C took ages to grow on me but I get that. It's a modern art piece, this just feels like a bit of an afterthought. Sorry.

I wish I had read the reviews prior to sampling this at the Estee Lauder brands cosmetic outlet. I might have invested in a bottle had I known about the product removal related to the name. I don't generally wear rose centered fragrances, with the exception of Stella, but I enjoy sampling them as I am fond of rose flowers in nature. This is definitely a leather centric rose fragrance to my nose. Full on leather and/or wood fragrances are a no go for this introvert to wear. This does seem to be well blended from quality ingredients. I tested Rose de Russie on a paper strip but not on skin as I had already tried a couple of other fragrances that day (and it may have been headache inducing). I left the strip in my purse and it stayed pleasantly scented for almost 2 weeks. My fairly obvious impression of it is a beautiful, strong rose scent enhanced with some spiciness, with a prominent base of leather and wood. I need to find my sample of Guerlain Santal Royal to see if it has similarities.

Interesting blend, I like the notes of dark pepper, leather and rose dancing all together. I wore this a couple of times, It’s little bit too much for my taste and gave me a headache (worn at night, tropical weather). But I also want to try this when it’s snowy/freezing cold, because I still like it and it’s very sophisticated. At dry-down, a lot of the rose has disappeared and the leather, wood and pepper dominates the notes. This is a masculine rose, so gentlemen, feel free to give it a try and let us know! Edit : One spray over the head and/or a small drop on the wrist is enough to leave a strong trail. Good quality, pricey but correct value. _____ Sillage, longevity, projection : 7/10 Originality : 8/10 Quality, value : 7.5/10 7.5/10

Went into this one with high hopes as I am a sucker for rose scents and anything labeled Russia. Unfortunately, it's a miss for me. The leather overly dominates. True to the name, it's a very dark pungent leather. The rose is there but is too subdued. My experience with this can be summed up within the first 5 min of spraying it. I was asked if I had been smoking. When it dries down, it softens up quite a bit, and then becomes decent. I got a sample of this, as it has been kind of hard to track down outside of Ebay. I'm sure some people will like this, and it's an interesting scent in itself just as a curiosity. Considering the money, when I saw one come up, I decided not to buy it. It's not one I would choose to wear over anything else.

Gosh a second consecutive dislike from my favorite brand and all from the same collection! While Rose D’amalfi caused me to gag at first sniff, this caused me to sneeze! This perfume’s notes are really pepper leather rose in that order of importance. So this should really be a perfume of pepper with a slight leathery note and a negligible trace of rose. Not at all pleasant! I would have rated this as hate but don’t have the heart to. Edit. It smells surprisingly good after nine hrs (on skin mind you) and sticks around for about three hrs more. Unfortunately I have to wash it off but I can bet it’s going to stick around even longer if I haven’t. Edit. Layered it with Ombre Leather and it was surprisingly good together.

Its very smoky, that was my first thought. And there's quite a lot of smoke/leather, I could barely get the rose smell. It is not without some charm (I will probably finish the sample bottle rather than discard it entirely.) But for floral/rose fans this is not going to hit the spot. The peppery smell on the drydown is a bit sharp. EDIT TO ADD: I gave this to my son as its more of a masculine smell. It would suit as a male-leaning unisex fragrance!

Rose and leather in combination with not a lot else going on. Anyone who has tried their hand at making perfume might be familiar with perfumersapprentice's 'leather accord', and this smells quite like that. It's just not meant to be the main star of the show, it comes across as metallic, screechy and just high-pitched. I don't mind what's going on down there, below the screech, but the other note distracts too much, I feel.

A unisex rose and leather scent that has a rustic vibe. Almost Home Depot. It reminds me of cowboys and desolate, dry American Western landscapes. A desert rose with burlap, firewood, and horse saddles. I wish there was something else here, though. While the simplicity is cool, I can't help but feel something is missing to make it a fragrance I would want to wear.

I originally thought this was at least more interesting than the fine (but overdone) Rose D'Amalfi, but now I'm finding the leather to be too green, and the "interesting" factor wore off, so I'm completely over it.

It's got a very in your face leather smell, which, when combined with the wood notes becomes borderline over powering. The rose is nice, but it disappears during the dry down

I have been looking for a scent that combines rose with darker facets like leather/woods and possibly fresh spicy/aromatic/green facets... This is a "no from me, dawg..." First of all, I bought a 7.5 ml dabber bottle off an ebay seller with a reliably good-looking rating. When I opened it up, I was hoping it wasnt a fake - the plastic sealing it almost looked suspiciously loose, even though it was sealed - but more suspiciously, it was missing maybe 1/5 of the liquid when I opened it. While I don't think it's a fake, I do wonder why/how that much perfume evaporated(?). The scent, though... oof... it just checks none of those aforementioned boxes re: a dark, masc/unisex rose fragrance. Instead: old lady's ancient mouldering purse, a very powdery dry tea rose-type-rose, and - ugh - there is this yucky animalic note that comes out on me. I have no idea what note in this would be responsible for it; I have never smelled it before. I know some people have said cumin notes smell like sweat on them; this seems to be a similar phenomenon... The scent also seems kinda weak compared to other TF scents I've smelled. Next to Black Orchid, you wouldn't even be able to smell an equal amount of this. If anyone has any idea what this note is please lmk! I want to make sure to avoid anything containing it in the future 😬 EDIT: learned that my bottle probably (definitely) began oxidizing. Maybe it was the black pepper that turned rank; idk.

I don't like this at all. It's got a harsh scratchy patchouli-ish vibe and to my shnozz it is not well-blended eg the rose and the harsh leather act like two lovers who have fallen out and will never be reconciled because of their inherent differences. Cuir de Russie and Ambre Russe are more nuanced and smoothly blended. This feels shouty and arrogant.

I didn't like this on paper, but I went ahead with a spritz because of the positive reviews. On my skin, it was actually better, but an hour later it had morphed into an unpleasant 80% smokey leather, 10% powder, 10% rose. Not what I would classify as a rose scent. The good news is that after 5 or 6 hours, it was gone.

I like fresh, floral scents, so this is way too heavy, blunt, and masculine for me.

A spicy, potpourri style rose. Masculine and rough around the edges.

I was so disappointed by this fragrance. I was hoping it would be a lovely sweet yet deep rose reminiscent of Rose Prick with more leather notes but as soon as I sprayed it on all I could smell was rubber. Anything from Tom Ford that has leather notes in it tends to turn to the scent of a tire shop on me and this was no exception. As it dried down it became a bit sweeter but the leather/rubber was just overpowering. Ended up having to wash it off because of the headache it gave me. If you can pull off the Tom Ford leather I'm sure this has potential to be a gorgeous fragrance but I would not recommend blind buying. I will be sticking to Rose Prick for the time being.

I got a free sample of this with a purchase I made for another fragrance, and let me just say thank God I didn’t pay for the sample. I made the mistake of spaying this on my skin to test without smelling it on paper first. I was horrified. This smelled like pepper and an ashtray in one. I didn’t get any rose at all. Just spicy pepper and old cigarettes. Horrible. I had to immediately shower and scrub this off. I’ve never had such a horrible experience with a fragrance! This is definitely not something I would ever wear or like to smell on anyone!
