This is not positioned as a light or playful interpretation, but rather something richer and more complex, built around layers of spice, florals, woods, and gourmand elements that suggest a more mature and nuanced composition. On paper, the blend of saffron, coffee, barley, tobacco, and vanilla reads like something warm, slightly smoky, and quietly indulgent, balancing dryness with sweetness in a way that feels both comforting and refined. There is an expectation here of a vanilla that does more than simply sit at the center, one that evolves and interacts with the surrounding notes to create something more dimensional. Let’s see if this darker interpretation of vanilla draws us in or begins to fade once it settles on the skin. Opening: The opening is sweet, warm, and spicy. The primary notes I get are Madagascar vanilla, coffee, saffron, and suede, with the vanilla and coffee leading. The Madagascar vanilla immediately sets the tone with a rich, creamy sweetness that feels smooth and almost custard-like, giving the fragrance a distinctly gourmand foundation right from the start. The coffee rises alongside it, introducing a dark, roasted accord with a subtle bitterness that mirrors the aroma of freshly roasted coffee, creating a familiar and comforting contrast against the sweetness. This pairing immediately brings to mind Coffee Break by Maison Martin Margiela, where creamy warmth and roasted coffee blends together. Beneath that, the saffron adds a refined, softly spiced warmth that lends a luxurious, almost velvety undertone to the composition. Lastly, the suede anchors the opening with a soft, supple leather nuance, adding texture and a gentle dryness that keeps the sweetness from becoming too heavy. In the background, there are faint hints of tropical and green florals from the frangipani and narcissus, but they remain subtle, adding just a touch of lift without distracting from the core profile. The result is a rich, inviting opening where creamy vanilla and roasted coffee take center stage, supported by soft spice and smooth leather for added depth. Dry Down: The dry down is sweet, warm, and woody. The primary notes I get are vanilla, coffee, tobacco, and mahogany, with the vanilla and coffee continuing to lead. The vanilla maintains that same rich, creamy sweetness from the opening, staying smooth and enveloping without shifting in tone, while the coffee remains just as present, delivering that dark, roasted character with a subtle bitterness that keeps the composition grounded. The tobacco emerges clearly in this stage, adding a warm, natural depth that leans dry and slightly herbaceous rather than overly sweet or honeyed, giving the fragrance a more mature edge. Beneath it all, the mahogany provides a deep, polished woodiness that acts as a foundation, adding structure and a sense of refinement while allowing the sweeter elements to sit comfortably on top. The result is a very consistent dry down that closely mirrors the opening, with added depth from tobacco and wood that reinforces the fragrance’s rich, cozy character. Performance: Projection opens strong within the first hour, easily capable of filling a room and establishing a noticeable presence right away. Sillage follows with an intensely heavy scent trail that fully carries the fragrance’s rich, gourmand character. After about three to four hours, projection softens slightly but remains strong at around six feet, while the scent trail becomes a bit lighter but still clearly detectable. As the fragrance moves into the later stages around the eight hour mark, projection settles to about three to four feet, and the scent trail continues to soften while remaining present. It persists for roughly ten to twelve hours before transitioning into a skin scent. Overall, this delivers impressive longevity and presence befitting of a gourmand profile. When to Wear: Vanille Fatale finds its sweet spot in the fall and winter, where its warmth and richness can fully develop in cooler air. It naturally leans into evening wear, pairing best with slower, more intentional settings where its cozy and inviting character can be appreciated. It works especially well for special occasions like date nights or anniversaries, where that indulgent, enveloping quality can enhance the atmosphere. At the same time, it can also suit more relaxed situations, such as a quiet evening at home, where its comforting nature feels right at ease. However, its gourmand weight makes it less fitting for formal environments that call for something more restrained, and it would likely feel too heavy and intrusive in an office setting. Blind Buy: For those who already enjoy gourmand vanilla fragrances, this leans toward being an easy blind buy, as that rich, creamy sweetness sits firmly at the center of the composition from start to finish. Everything here is built around that indulgent vanilla and coffee pairing, making the overall direction very clear and consistent. On paper, some of the supporting notes like frangipani and narcissus might seem a bit out of place within a dense gourmand structure, and could raise concerns about the fragrance leaning too floral or unfocused. In practice, that never becomes an issue. They are blended so seamlessly into the composition that they simply add a subtle lift and nuance rather than standing out as distinct floral elements. They enhance the fragrance without ever distracting from its core identity. That said, given the price point and the overall richness of the scent, sampling is still the safest route. Final Verdict: The vanilla category is one of the most crowded spaces in fragrance, with countless variations competing for attention, which makes it difficult for any one release to truly stand out. Vanille Fatale manages to do just that by leaning into a profile that feels both familiar and elevated. Having previously experienced Coffee Break by Maison Martin Margiela, I was already drawn to that combination of creamy sweetness and roasted coffee, but ultimately let down by its performance. Vanille Fatale takes a similar idea, removes the airy freshness, deepens the gourmand elements, and reinforces it with significantly stronger performance. The result is a fragrance that delivers exactly what I enjoy about that style, but in a more complete and satisfying way. There is very little here that I would change, and despite already owning several vanilla-focused fragrances, this is one that stands out enough for me to seriously consider adding it to my collection when the time feels right. An indulgent, praline-ribboned woody vanilla with soft whispers of tobacco, this scent is creamy, vaguely tropical and boasts the most intoxicating woody/gourmand base that has me constantly sniffing my wrist. Compared to the sultrier floral/woody OG, this version has an overtly gourmand character that echoes creamy sandalwood scents such as Initio’s Paragon, De Gabor’s Darling, L’Objet’s Oh Mon Dieu and Laurent Mazzone’s Soleil Infidel. It also references the original Tobacco Vanille, in a sense that it plays up its sweeter tobacco facets, making for an enveloping, though close-to-skin experience. As it dries down, there’s a hint of smokiness that works seamlessly with the buttery praline core as well as the barely-there tendrils of saffron that imbue it with intrigue, making it stand out from the current trending vanillas. Personally, I enjoy the lighter touch with the materials, which, to me, makes this version of Vanille Fatale beautifully versatile. Add to this Tom Ford’s signature creamy base (similar to that in Soleil de Feu) and you get a likable, easily-to-wear vanilla that will garner you multiple compliments while delivering a pleasant, cocooning experience. @mytopnotes IG

I am usually sceptical of critics who claim they detect huge differences when a perfume changes its packaging, bottle, or joins a different line. I often suspect that some of them are simply trying to sell older versions at inflated prices. But in this case, that is not true. I own both versions of Vanille Fatale, and the 2024 version is noticeably different — and, in my opinion, worse. The differences are not huge, but they are definitely noticeable. The 2024 version is not as sweet, and there is a slight bitterness to it. At the same time, it lacks projection, longevity, and overall quality. The original version feels deeper and richer — more resinous and ambery, with a fuller sweetness. After two or three hours, it projects extremely well. It feels bold, powerful, and genuinely expensive. It really makes no sense to me why they discontinued the original formula only to re-release it in a weaker form and at a much higher price. I agree that the new formula is easier to wear, but it feels like a shadow of the original. I am very happy to own a full bottle of the original version.

Despite its name, I don’t really get much vanilla here—at least not in a way that stands out. What I do get is a beautifully blended mix of sweet coffee and wet tobacco The coffee leans sweet rather than bitter, carrying just a touch of spice. I was surprised it wasn’t spicier, considering the listed top notes. The tobacco is moist, almost chewy, not dry or ashy. It actually reminds me of my Nana’s chewing tobacco, with that earthy nuance, paired well with the hay-like smell in the background. Every now and then, I catch a slight banana-like fruitiness, which brings to mind New York Nights from Bond9. As the scent develops, there’s also a subtle boozy quality, like a sweet rum, though it’s not very pronounced. I do wish the boozy facet was stronger—but it’s still enjoyable as a supporting detail. Overall, this feels like a coffee-tobacco fragrance first and foremost, smooth, slightly sweet, and quietly rich. Even if the vanilla stays hidden, the blending is excellent and the scent itself is gorgeous.

I tried the original a few times and it never quite worked for me. I tried this one today thinking it was the same one - suddenly it works really well with my skin and I absolutely adored it. I couldn't work out what changed, until I came on here and found out the perfume itself has changed. To me it is very similar to Dior's Vanilla Diorama but I find this one slightly more wearable, more modern and closer to a real vanilla scent. I love them both but I'd probably choose this out of the two if I had to. I find it lovely, definitely more suitable in winter, and it lasts a very long time on my skin. I definitely get a creamy/cerealy vibe with this scent, it also has some slight similarities to Tobacco Vanille as there's a hint of chocolate for me. It projects quite well which is rare for me, and it lasted well over 8 hours. I can see others feel it doesn't perform well but for me personally this is one of the best performing fragrances I've ever tried.

Wow! This works wonders on my skin. It opens up with luxurios saffron and coriander, which makes it smell a bit like chocolate as well. Then some fantastic coffee and beautiful, creamy yet a bit dark and mysterious vanilla says hello to let you know it has arrived to the party as the V.I.P, and a subtle hint of tobacco to liven up the party even more. The Vanilla then invites the other notes up to a dance and in a wonderous swirl they create a gourmand dream. After the dance, the vanilla sticks around with the coffee and some mahogny at a beautiful afterparty that’s still very present on my skin more than 11hours in to the spray. This to me is a perfect fragrance because it does everything i want scent wise, it’s well crafted, interesting, smells beautiful and luxurious. It projects great for me and the silliage on my skin is also very good. On par with my favorite fragrance of all time which is Tobacco Vanille also by Tom Ford 10/10

Don’t understand the hate for this and the original version. Both are fantastic and the new one is nearly identical to the original. The new release is missing some of the bitterness from the barley note that’s in the original. It comes across a little dirty on me- I enjoy it but other times I don’t. In the new one, it’s there but smoothed out a bit more. I think they improved upon it. It’s very complex. I think many go onto it expecting a safe vanilla gourmand when it’s a dark, brooding amber incense with vanilla supporting. The bitter notes balance out the sweet. Above average projection and average longevity on skin- longer in clothes. Again, it’s just “cool” to shit on Tom Ford for some reason.

I can tell immediately reading these comments that people have gold label bottles for sale, so they are bashing this new version. Sorry but the new version is better, at least for men. The old one was heavier on florals and kind of smelled like a run of the mill Sephora fragrance like an Atelier Cologne if anyone remembers those. Very 2017-2019 vibes. This new one is a great coffee fragrance that doesn’t announce to everyone I AM A COFFEE FRAGRANCE. There are plenty of those fragrances out there that take the coffee note too far, so I am so happy this one doesn’t. It has coffee, but in a subtle way. The mix is superbly balanced. I've only recently started collecting more fragrances, but vanilla and spice is something I've come to love and this is exactly that. Vanille fatale does what I says on the tin I think, it's a very strong vanilla scent with equally strong spice mixed in to create something unique and powerful, although because of this I do think it could be quite overpowering if too much is used or someone doesn't like this type of scent. This isn't something I would wear everyday however, more of a nighttime special occasion, especially with the high price point I would not want to waste it.

I don't really understand the criticisms of this new formulation - it performs just as well as the original blend. I would go so far as to say that I much prefer this version. The florals are slightly toned down and the coffee note is more pronounced than in the original, which I quite welcome. Super seductive and rich fragrance. Vanilla is there but this is not a sickly-sweet vanilla - it works harmoniously with the suede, coffee and tobacco notes to ground it. I think it is unisex but leans masculine. I'm glad I decided to purchase one of the new bottles.

Yes. Right down my alley... Make-upy vanilla with a touch of smokiness. This is something you wear on a rainy day, a date (but only a special one), or if you’re like me if you wanna just feel cozy so whenever you want!... this is mysterious woman (despite most saying unisex).. Smells like Black Orchids sexier cousin. Lana Del Rey-esq. It’s called Vanille fatale for a reason, because this will turn you into a femme fatale. I would pair this with Vanilla Musk-Nemat to add more vanilla and sweetness.

I sampled this in the store and the smell is amazing. The most intoxicatingly sweet vanilla-coffee-tobacco scent. I love tobacco notes so this is right up my alley. The sillage is not strong however the fragrance is beautiful. The only reason I have not purchased this is because 50ml of this fragrance is not worth $395, especially because I’m a heavy sprayer and I’d run through a bottle of this fragrance in less than a month.

This re-release is more unisex and less feminine than the original release. I get the floral flintiness of Santal Blush, the coffee from Noir de Noir, and a slight sweetness of vanilla. Make no mistake though, this is not a powerful oriental fragrance like Noir de Noir, it just has a shared DNA somewhere in there, but it is far more tame. I can see this being the “masculine” counterpart to Vanilla Sex

This is beautiful if you can afford it. Would be so much better if it lasted longer on my skin. Has a sweetness to it that leads me to think it leads more feminine than unisex. Not a safe blind buy, but if you like Tobacco Vanille, Alexandria II, and Angel's Share, you will probably like this one too. It's a very pretty, well done scent

Solidly unisex, beautiful notes, very long-lasting for a Tom Ford. Vanilla, barley, tobacco, coffee, suede are all present and harmonious. This is what I wanted from TF Tobacco Vanille, even though I love that one too! This one is fluffier. Like a Nutella-spread-on-suede kind of deal. Reminds me a little of Chelsea Nights from Bond No. 9 in that way. Wish it lasted longer. 8/10 :)!

Surprisingly good actually. Mainly get tobacco, light coffee and suede. I'm sure the old formulation was much better, but it's still a nice fragrance. Performance is bad however, and for that reason it's WAY overpriced. 7/10

This is by far my favourite fragrance. It’s so elegant, much less sweet than tobacco vanille, and it is my number one comment receiver. Absolutely love it - but it’s so overpriced.

I like this cologne a lot. I had tobacco vanilla, and it was very nice but had a kind of synthetic smell, and this does tobacco vanilla better without that.

This 2024 Vanille Fatale is my favorite from Tom Ford. Smells great, luxurious and rich. Easy reach, don't get bored of it.

Whoops, I wrote my original review on the wrong Vanille Fatale, this one is the right one. I got this secondhand from my brother, he's allergic to something in it and he's not really a fragrance guy, so it's mine now. Lucky me, I wouldn't have bought it... I've received Tom Ford from family members twice now actually, but their frags are so overpriced I don't even consider buying from the brand myself... Holy Thank goodness he literally just let me have it. This frag is super nice. First off I can most definetly smell the barley, but in the form of a boozy barley malt syrup. It's not sticky or anything, and I love that soft kinda-sweetness, it's sweet in the way unsweetened syrup is sweet, not sugary at all. Also, the barley scent itself brings to my mind beige-golden, feathery stalks of barley, not the little processed grains. In general it's a boozy, syrup-ish haze, thickly (not cloying) but subtly sweet. Wow, real nice. As someone who does actually want to smell like maple/pancake syrup, I really love this non-gourmand-ey, not overpowering treacle. I've never worn this in public actually, but I wouldn't say it's unwearable at all, it is incredibly wearable! Just not like, in (high)school or at work or anything (just isn't appropriate for the environment?). I'd genuinely wear this anywhere else. I even think it suits me, waaaaah... Also, I think it's alluring and even a little sexy, and plan to wear this when me and my boyfriend can hang out. It'd be great for dinner dates and the like, but that's not to say it's only a evening-out frag, no, I think it's fine, wearable in the daytime, too. It's really not cloying or overpowering or anything like that, at least on me. It’s more of a haze rather than a smoke, not sooty, too strong, or burnt: it's just soft, slightly syrupy sweet... it’s really just my type! I love the scent of actual smoke, like incense, cigarette smoke, and etc. irl, and I love the smells of syrup and barley (and yeast, wheat, those sorts of grain things), but those scents aren’t super public wearable at least for me (or at least more rare, or done too strong in the case of smoky scents)... But VF makes it work. Yeah but that price tag is Fatale, lol. It's definitely nice, but for what you get, it's absolutely not worth a roughly 1:10 ml-to-dollars-ratio. When I run out I am not repurchasing. I cherish it by huffing it occasionally at home; I’m mostly saving it for the future. P.S. I think my brother basically never used/sprayed this, so it never really got a chance to oxidize, which is why my initial review was wayyy different. Back when it was passed off to me, the barley note was nonexistent, and the general scent was also super fizzy, and much more woody... honestly, it smelled like spilling a rum and coke (heavy on the coca cola) on the floor of a burnt log cabin. I think Tom Ford frags tend to change a lot as they start actually developing, my bottle of Vanilla Sex was the same. Also, just like with VS, I don't really smell vanilla anywhere in VF... It doesn't feel like it's missing anything, but if you're buying this for the vanilla, sample first.

“It smells like some vanilla lotion” 3 hours later. That’s what a majority of non fragrance enthusiasts think after I came home with it on my hand. I own 10 TF private blends, over the last 13 years of collecting I’ve been all over the place with my collection. I’ve had it up to 250 bottles like a nut job, now down to 50. Tom Ford, Kilian, and Creed seem to offer some of the best smells out there imo, but shrinkflation is a real thing. I sprayed this on my hand 3 hours ago and the dry down is already faint. I can tell it is very high quality. One thing people must understand in the perfume industry is that longevity and smelling good is a compromise. A lot of TF fragrances don’t last long bc they prioritize best smell. Fragrances are to be worn to events and special occasions or which all will last for. Some of my 10 year old bottles on the other hand will last much longer. This is a rough economy so they are putting less oil in now days. This smells good though no doubt and if you are in an intimate situation 7 hours later, I’m sure someone will smell it, just don’t expect everyone around you to be complimenting you asking who smells so good.

I love this perfume. Unfortunately, my husband thinks it is too masculine leaning. Usually he compliments my perfume, but with this, he kind of shook his head. But that does not stop me from liking it! I am usually a powdery floral type girl, but when I put this on, its like I have a different 'persona'. I feel warm, sexy, and confident (not that I don't with flowery powder types) but instead of feeling shy and coquettish, this makes me feel like I am in the spotlight. Like I could walk out in public with an oomph in my step... not caring what anyone in the world would think. Vanilla, that light lingering tobacco (I absolutely detested TF's Tobacco Vanille for smelling like soggy cigarettes) but this tobacco is done right. It mingles with the vanilla, a tiny bit of coffee scent balancing it out. Oh this is lovely. Currently using my sample up alone at home, enjoying this other persona it gives me ... I might just have to purchase this.

I haven’t been a fan of Tom Ford’s more recent fragrances over the past 2 years, I guess that coincides with the acquisition by Estée Lauder. But Vanille Fatale is a more rugged gourmand that’s custardy with caramelised smoky oomph. Even though it’s a vanilla, it’s not a powdery feminine sponge cake, this is resinous and shares a similar DNA base to Ebene Fume - I detect the same ebony/mahogany leather/suede base but this isn’t as heavy, dark nor smoky. Whereas Ebene Fume is more of a mature uncle smoking a cigar on a leather sofa kind of scent, this is more unisex from the gourmand creamier lightness. The scent: chilled custard crème brûlée that’s just had its brown sugar top melted by a blow-torch into a caramelised brittle crust, that’s placed on a leather topped mahogany table.

This fragrance reminds me of a saying. Just because it can be done, doesn't mean it should be done. In theory, this should not work for me because they threw in frangipani, which is a staple in tropical fragrances. Then they added tobacco, coffee, and leather, which is really odd and normally wouldn't mesh well with frangipani. But it does work, and credit to the perfumer for weaving the notes of a potential disaster, into a wearable fragrance. It's an interesting tropical esq type fragrance that is held together by traditional heavier base notes. I probably won't buy this because I have no need or desire for a hybrid type fragrance. But I give points for creativity and skilled perfumery of turning lemons, into lemonade. Scent 5.5/10 Performance 7/10

I’m getting very similar feelings as I do when I wear Red Tobacco. It’s a great vanilla mixed with coffee and tobacco. Feels very smooth and creamy. For such an expensive fragrance I am going to pass this up. I can only think of a couple times I’d wear this every year and for that, a 2ml sample will last enough time. It’s a fancy upscale event kind of fragrance.

this is definitely not a straightforward vanilla scent. for me, i get a nice milky coffee, spices and roasted barley, and a nice base of tobacco and vanilla. big fan of the saffron opening, punches your nose in a good way. overall it’s a delicious scent, if you can get it at a discount it’s worth it! (as with most tom fords)

Nice, warm vanilla. Weak to the extent that I suspect the tester at the store was heavily diluted. The tobacco is beautiful. Not that complex though, or extraordinary. Maybe I'd have picked up on more notes or layers if it wasn't soo weak. Will try again someday though, I suspect it is a problem with the specific tester.

I received a sample of this. I don’t know if it’s the reformulated one or OG. I really Enjoy this. Really Nice blend of Spice, smokiness, wordiness. Slight hint booziness. Resins. I enjoy it more than Tobacco Vanille & Vanilla S&X. Would make a lovely Autumn Winter scent. The only thing I don’t like is the price point.

This leans pretty feminine on me - interested to see how it dries down. I definitely get the TV vanilla here but surrounded by floral nots and rich mahogany resin. Edit: unfortunately stays quite feminine and floral on my skin. I dont get much vanilla until many hours in the drydown - which I really enjoy.

Crazy longevity and sillage, probably the best vanilla fragrance out there, I might add its better than tobacco vanille. Its very sexy and alluring but can also be overpowering.

Soft vanilla with smoked tobacco, suede and spice. Borderline gourmand, with a sudden but not sharp sweet-sour floral note. Zero coffee. Pleasant, safe, fluffy, slightly spicy.

The original was fantastic but too feminine for me. Let's see if they've changed anything with this new release or it it's just the same perfume in a different bottle.

Beautiful smoky chocolate/coffee/vanilla unisex scent that i enjoy getting to wear

What happened to this one? The new formulation is so weak and watered down compared to the robustness of the original release. The older one was this amazing rich and dark vanilla with lots of myrhh and spice. There was a lovely bourbon profile to it that worked so well... this new one lacks it. It's a safe vanilla with some watercolour delicate suede and a little floral and coffee. It doesn't last. At all! What's a disappointment. Sure, it's inoffensive and nice, but it's dull and without a strong performance. A ghost of it's old self. As another review said below - it is very much like the wrapper that remains of the rich desert of the older formula.

The performance of the new version is quite disappointing to be honest. It sits very close to the skin, and it is barely noticeable after 3 hours of wear. Even when sprayed on cloths, the sillage is quite minimal. The top has a weird dusty/ attic note to it and it stays for almost an hour. After the first hour it becomes truly stunning and unique. A beautiful mixture of ripe plum, tobacco and a touch of myrrh and coffee . The dry down is very unisex, not overly sweet vanilla, but it is quite toned down. All together the scent is lovely after the first hour, but the performance is terrible for the price point.

haven't tried the original vanille fatale and I'm not sure if it has been reformulated or just repackaged, but to be fair this smells like something that Montale would release, but a little more complex and not as synthetic at all. It smells like something a rich person would smell like and I definitely get a little tobacco and coffee, it's blended well, but then again let's be real here - it's not worth the price as all of the latest TF releases. Longevity: 7/10 (around 6-7h) Sillage: 6/10 Uniqueness: 7/10

Whereas the old version is like indulging in a rich dessert, the new version is like merely smelling the plate after someone else ate it. The scent profile skeleton is there so you will recognize it, but there is no flesh, no fullness. Longevity is subpar; the original stays until next morning, the new version is completely gone after 4 hours. Judging from some reviews here I am inclined to wonder if Tom Ford payed for them. It’s a shame, and makes me cherish my pre-reformulation bottle even more.

If sweet and boozy is your thing then this is for you. Otherwise, I find this to be a redundant addition to that genre, as there’s nothing particularly unique or compelling here. Was hoping to get a more pronounced coffee note but I find it instead taking a back seat to vague sweetness. Well-blended and smooth composition but for the price there’s better alternatives on the market.

For me there isn’t much to add to Datura Darling’ review below. Just to reiterate: I also feel like it’s merely a shadow of a rich deep scent Vanille Fatale used to be, watered down and boring to the core. I really see no point in owning this (even less in paying the asking price) when there are so many interesting oriental vanilla fragrances out there.

Floral coriander/saffron is evident on opening, along with a coffee/beer mix. Not loud vanilla, the floral reminds me of black orchid, the background wood aroma is sort of ebene fume. If you like those two, you’ll like this
