Tosca

What a stunning perfume. I see where the Chanel comparisons are coming from. There are a lot of similarities. Still, Tosca is distinctive and it develops to be substantially different. Aldehydes, neroli, citruses, and indolic yellow flowers. A cloud of soapy, sunny, powdery pollen. As it progresses, it smells less like No. 5 EDT. It's much more of an amber floral, I get hints of L'Heure Bleue. Tosca has a generous helping of carnation, as well as musks, amber notes, vanilla, and chocolate powder patchouli in its base. The final stages remind me of Shalimar's base. Tosca straddles the line somewhere between Chanel's classic No. 5 and these legendary Guerlain ambers. Not as light and soapy as the former, not as heavy and vanillic as the latter two. If you love classic French perfumery, please try Tosca! It's absolutely lovely throughout its lifespan, this is a thoroughly beautiful and worthwhile perfume. It smells sophisticated and expensive. The price is... a steal for what you get. This perfume deserves a lot more praise and attention than it gets. I hope to turn more people onto it!

I didn't particularly like this when I first sprayed it onto my skin, it smelt rather too harsh. But after about 15 minutes it moved to its next stage, and it is lovely. Its smell of warmth, comfort and dare I say class. Someone mentioned it having a 'nivea cream' undertone and yep, I get that indeed, but above that is floral and citrus. It's like a warm hug. I would say safe for an office environment. I think you could wear this anytime of the year, especially on dull rainy days it just exudes sunshine. And it would go with day or night.

This perfume sounds noble and impeccable. It is elegant and moderately bright. The sound of the aroma is warm and refreshing, the middle is filled with an aromatic floral potion. The base is tasty, not cloying. Overall, this perfume is like an old acquaintance whom we haven’t seen for a long time, and how good it is that he is alive and found! There should always be such perfumes.

Such a beautiful citrusy white floral.. My art teacher when I was a child wore this or something extremely similar. For an elegant, mature person.. Although many associate this with their grandmother I think that it works these days too if you have class. You could wear it all year round but I think I will save this for when it's sunny and warm again.

So far, the only perfume I ever used to go to bed. It somehow clears the air, making me feel more relaxed. It is soapy, yet quite deep as much as aethereal. I am talking about the eau de cologne version, possibly 80s, maybe earlier, have no idea what the current one smells like. Flowers, a nice collection of soaps and yes chanel no5 are all there.

This scent was my comfort growing up. My Oma wore Tosca in Germany and in my 20s so did I (in Canada). I evolved to Chanel No5 in my 30s then Van Cleef & Arpel's First for the 40-50s, until I finally found Guerlain l'heure bleue which is gorgeously full version of the Tosca tones I loved.

I blind bought this at a really good price. My version is an Eau de Cologne Splash with a dark blue and gold label. Since I was already wearing another perfume, I first tested Tosca on fabric. I put a little too much on it, so the smell was quite sharp and alcoholic - it smelled like classic 4711 Eau de Cologne, which I do not like at all. So, I tested it again on paper and this time got a little bit on my finger as well. While on the paper it still smells like 4711, on my skin it is much more pleasant, more reminiscent of Chanel No. 5. I say this cautiously, mind you, because I don't want anyone to blindly buy this, thinking Tosca is a Chanel No. 5 dupe. In my opinion it is not! The "trick" to make this nice to wear really is, to rather use a thin layer of it on several spots, because then you won't have to deal with the overwhelming sharpness. Instead you will have a creamy, lemony, smoky, slightly floral fragrance. Definitely a safe blind buy, if you're into the notes!

just got it from my authorized online shop for $25. first dab smell a bit strong and I smell a nutmeg. after 5 minutes, i love this powdery smell like a fancy baby product or kinda Enchanteur talcum powder..sooo classy back in the 70's 80's when beautiful mothers wore this to formal and holiday event... sweet and warm childhood memories. are you sure this is an eau de cologne? this is perfume extract. I want to sleep in a fluffy pillow and blanket everytime smelling this cologne. try to wear this right after you took a shower and feel the mother's huuuuugggg... update : hey hey hey... I realize that this tosca has similar powdery notes with Shalimar. Johnson n' Johnson quality with strong nutmeg and herbal notes. no wonder they were born int he same year (even tosca were earlier), same era. tosca, you're rock!

Recently received a bottle of Tosca in a vintage lot. My bottle is from the late 60'ties or early 70'ties and in excellent condition. Must have been stored properly. It does smell a lot like Chanel no. 5. Less aldehydes, though and it's more powdery. Actually, it's like a mix of no. 5 and Vanderbilt, being a little musty too and to my nose it smells like the inside of a make-up bag from a long, long time ago. It isn’t a scent to my liking at all, but it is very well made and I understand its popularity over the years. It’s a very mature scent and I remember many older female relatives smelling like this, when I was a child. Mine is an eau de cologne and I’m surprised about the lasting power. It can still be bought for a song and it doesn’t smell cheap at all.

I was first introduced to Tosca by the much-older daughter of my Dad's best friend. She wore this as her regular scent and every time I smell it I think of her. It's very evocative for me, but I tend to reserve it for hot summer days because it is so light and fresh. I bought my bottle on a trip to Germany in 1988, so I've been nursing it carefully for a while. It's a bit heavier than 4711 original EDC, I'm a patchouli freak, and it's my go-to summer scent that has patchouli without being cloying/overpowering.

Tosca is a nice cologne. For me a true classic. Fresh, like 4711, but with alot of soulful basenotes too. More womanly than manly to me, but great for all as it can easily work for men and women. I remember my friend ́s German Mom had this along with many bottle of 4711. I remember the Tosca bottles to be on the Mom ́s dresser. I am sure this scent takes many of us back to the 60 ́s and 70 ́s. I think many young people would like this too if it were marketed under something ̈cool ̈.

This is the perfume my mother used to wear back in the 70s and 80s. It reminds me of her a lot. At that time, most women wouldn't buy expensive perfumes and they would wear them in special days or occasions (Sundays, weddings, anniversaries, etc). It is decent, soapy and clean perfume, it lasts for about 2-4 hours and it recognisable. This means it has character and thus, deserves to be given a chance. Mostly recomended for spring time.

An oriental floral to wear in the heat of summer daytime, unlike other orientals (Panthere, for example, or L'Heure Bleu, or Nuit de Noel) which I tend to reserve for evenings in fall and winter. The patchouli is barely noticeable & perhaps that's why it seems more summery while still having an oriental flair. Make no mistake though, there is a certain 'heaviness' here, despite the citrus in the opening.

I have an Eau de Cologne bottle from my mother. Soft, powdery and has an almost herbal quality to it. Very delicate composition. I also smelled the relaunched edition, but i found it harsh and masculine.

This is my first perfume. I was in my first year and my mum was always put this perfume on me. I love it though... I am 45 now, and I still love it.

Today I received my Tosca eau de parfum in a royal blue box with a golden rim. I bought this perfume to remember my mother, who passed away when I was 18 years old in 1992. For sure I remember this fragrance in her cabinet, and I was always amazed by the beautiful mesmerising lady face on the box as a little girl. For sure my grandma used the 'tagescreme', which I often tried when visiting her in my late teens. A beautiful velvetty cream, which smelled divine (I found). A few months ago I discovered this cream was still available in our perfume store in the Netherlands (Douglas) and costs nothing! It did smell exactly the same and even the concistency was still the same. Brought me back immediatly! The cream makes you feel very pampered en clean (creamy soapy) and gives a luxurious vintage feeling, that won't leave during the day. Same for the perfume. The beginning is very fresh, citrussy and even sharp, but after 15 minutes or so you are left with the same creamy fresh feeling the 'creme' gives you. There is some soap, there are flowers and a little bit spice, I recognise the soft yellow narcissus, but all very blended and feminine. Although the original must have been spicier, this eau the parfum is quite strong and lasts for hours. You could use this on top of your Nivea cream, it has the same vibe but with that extra luxury. Some people say it smells like Chanel No 5. I don't know Chanel No 5, but I can image Marilyn using the Nivea with Chanel on top and Tosca was her little niece for girls like my grandma and my mother. Girls from Holland, who like to be a little bit glamorous, but not too much, because you need to be neat an cleanly. I hesitated buying a vintage one and chose for the contemporary one this time. I thought to myself, what would my mother have done? Would she buy the old bottle? No no, for sure not! In those days everybody wanted to get rid of the old stuff and be modern. Though this version is not modern, but very classy stiled, with the facet glas with golden lettering, the golden downwards tapered cap that has an extra 'click' to assure it's closed. Inside the box there's an extra cardbord to protect the glas. Everything very nice and solid as we are used to with German brands, nothing cheap. The aim is still to reach lady's from my mothers generation I think, the ones that 'click' to it, not the younger audience. The only tragic thing is, after this journey that I took with the cream and the fragrance that memories of my mother smelling like this won't come back. Although I know for sure she used it, but I think she used the Nivea cream even more. And I still use that too.

It's a mix of 4711 or the like cologne (eg Fa cologne from the early 80s) and Chanel 5. They overlap in time, luckily the cologne seems to win eventually and the aldehydic notes become softer and softer until they mostly evaporate. Given the price, it's really worth testing - even just for the sake of the retro experience that it provieds;)

Here this is a classic next to Nonchalance and 4711. The older generation loves it. But maybe that is because back then there were less perfumes and these scents were affordable too. I would say Tosca is ONLY for old ladies. It might be because it brings back memories. Otherwise I cannot recommend this scent at all.

With a name like TOSCA, the title of that grand romantic tragic Italian opera by Puccini, one would have expected a strong, romantic, glamorous fragrance one could wear to the opera. One also expects something similar to Krizia's Teatro Alla Scala. It's noting like that. This is not a bad fragrance but it's definitely more of a cologne that can be worn by both men and women. It's from an old German company called Maurer and Wirtz 4711 that have since the 1700s 1800s 1900s sold mostly colognes for both men and women. In the 1970's 4711 sold various interesting colognes and advertised them with funny ads like men and women needing to cool off together drinking cocktails in an outdoor restaurant by splashing themselves with 4711 cologne. Another ad sold it as an "ice cold" cologne to put on when the weather is very hot. In Tosca you get a very warm hot fragrance probably consisting of patchouli, an orange and a red rose. While it is very strong once you put it on, it completely disappears after 2 or 3 hours. This leads me to believe that it's a unisex cologne one wishes to wear when one has to be somewhere for a short time just to put something on: a casual day of running errands, a PTA meeting, meeting your kids teachers at school, a job interview, an audition for theater TV or film, a visit to the library or book shop, a concert. It's also best worn in winter months and colder months like October through February. Even though it wasn't the loud romantic operatic fragrance I thought it would be, I found it very charming and likable. It's also very rare and hardly anyone wears it. 4711 and Maurer & Wirtz is barely getting by in a competitive world of fragrances made by Dior, Chanel, Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent, Ralph Lauren, Revlon, Elizabeth Arden, Estee Lauder, and of course all the young celebrity reality star, rappers, singers and actresses: Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Madonna, Paris Hilton, etc. This one is a little gem.

I have all the varieties of current formulations. The EDC spray can be had for a few bucks. Literally 2 bucks here and there online. I'm a guy. Tosca smells delicious. Occasional sniffs of Tosca bring me the same pleasure as smelling Shalimar, 1000 Patou, White Diamonds, Beautiful, etc. Tosca isn't as heavy as those, yet it is complex. I like it on skin but more often I'll spray Tosca EDP on some fabric. It smells like powders that I might have experienced as a boy in the 60s. I don't remember, them, though, so it's an imaginary scent. There are crystalline flowers projecting from the powdery background. It's surprisingly not chemical. The initial blast is fine but the pleasure starts at 10 minutes and continues a few hours at most. Tosca EDP is permanent on fabric until it's washed. Tosca Eau de Cologne settles down quickly, yet remains complete. It's a comforting, pretty, and evocative fragrance to pass by fleetingly in one's home. One spay on a linen mouchoir. One spray in the sheets at the bottom of the bed. Don't do this for a guest, it will likely horrify. Tosca Cologne reminds me of fragrance strips in magazines in the 1980s, before perfumes were reformulated... And how much were you getting on those strips? Quite a lot, you may recall, though there was a sameness. If Tosca were a candle I would burn it for 30 minutes max. I understand why people say Tosca smells "old lady" but to my nose it smells like what I want products to smell like today and sadly they do not. I would like bug spray or sun block to smell like Tosca. Some Toscas are cheaper than bug spray nowadays. It seems transgressive to enjoy something nobody considers valuable.

There's something so "yesteryear" about Tosca and I'm not sure where I've smelt it before but it seems that I might've smelt it on someone during my childhood as there's no adult memory of it. So, you could say it’s quite unforgettable. At first blush this fragrance seemed a bit too herbal or medicinal, yes, manly, like something you might smell on an old-fashioned gent. But then it dried down to the most delightful scent, perhaps a bit like 4711 Eau de Cologne, only more intense and a bit sweeter. The next day I tried it on again and absolutely fell in love with it. Now I just can't get enough... So yes, both men and women could easily wear Tosca. I for one wouldn’t mind smelling it on a fella...

In the 80's every women in Greece has it. I had a wrong idea of this being cheap,awful and discontinued. I find it today and is a great chypre/aldeydic fragrance! If Estee don't fits to you,choose this.Are similar. Is a very well done fragrance,cheap in price and high quality in feeling.Sparkle,sunny,playful and "serious"also!But not overdated,on me at least. (My opinion,choose it for colder times.) I m so happy I found a smell of my childhood dancing around again. Give it a try!

Am SO excited to discover that Tosca still exists; I fell in love with it when aged 17 (40 years ago!) then after marrying couldn't afford to keep buying perfume. It sprang to mind several times over the next four decades so decided to Google it tonight and am rapt to find I will be able to resume buying it - hope it hasn't changed over the years!! Will let you know when I've obtained some ...

The current Toscas that I have, the modern ones sold in shops today, smell quite similar to Maurer & Wirtz Tabac - the Cologne version. In the fat middles of the fragrances. Also Toscas aldehydes smell similar to Irisch Moos, though Moos is stronger, almost overpowering for me. So Maurer & Wirtz has a house style -- based on my limited sampling, mind you.

I love this one. There is considerable difference between eau de cologne, eau de toilette and eau de parfum. The cologne smelles very sharp and soapy and I would not recommend it. The other two are much warmer/nicer. If girls think it's 'old woman' and stay away from it - fine with me. I like to use a perfume that is not on everyone else.

Like so many others of you this is probably the first perfume bottle I had a sniff of.. when rummaging through my Grandmother's dressing table. The forbidden act of "using" perfume was the only exciting thing about it, otherwise its fragrance until today can only be described as Eau de Hell for me!!!

well, my friends tosca is back again in my country. you will find it at hondos center in new packaging and it costs only 11 euro. but lasts only 1-2 hours.

I don`t like it myself. But it`s my granny`s scent. And I have lot of sweet memories... It`s very old fashion.

It is sold by the house 4711-Cologne. EDC and EDP. I’m going to order one bottle of this beauty.
