Forlorn Embers & Black Reigns

One of the most easily enjoyable Toskovat’ fragrances I’ve tried, but it still has that strange, emotional, textured quality that makes the house interesting. It is sweet, smoky, woodsy, resinous, nutty, and slightly boozy, with a sticky warmth that immediately makes me think of early autumn. The opening has this syrupy, almost maple-like sweetness to my nose. Not pure maple syrup in a literal breakfast way, but that same sticky ambered sweetness, like marshmallows roasting over a fire with graham crackers nearby. As it develops, the woods and smoke come forward more. I get a piney forest quality mixed with dry woods, ash, tobacco, and a faint boozy warmth. The woods do not read masculine to me. They feel environmental, like actual trees and old logs around a fire, not a cologne-y cedar or sharp lumber accord. There is also a nutty facet that adds depth, almost like chestnut, walnut, or toasted nuts under the sweetness. There is also a subtle spiciness running through the woody heart, likely from the mace, that gives it a warm, dry, slightly aromatic edge. The smoke is present, but it does not overwhelm the composition. It feels like campfire smoke clinging to fabric rather than harsh burnt smoke. The sweetness stays sticky and warm throughout, but the pine, carob, woods, tobacco, and ash keep it from becoming too edible or syrupy. It has a little spice too, but more in a warm, resinous, autumnal way than a cinnamon-heavy gourmand way. There is definitely a gourmand structure here, but it is not a straightforward dessert scent. It smells like marshmallow, syrup, nuts, woodsmoke, tobacco, and resin all blended into something atmospheric. The bourbon accord adds warmth without becoming fermented or sour. It just gives the fragrance a darker, richer body. This the story I picture. You’re outside in the woods in early autumn, before it gets freezing but after the air has started to turn cold at night. Someone built a fire, and the smoke is moving through the trees. There are pine needles under your shoes, old logs stacked nearby, and the air smells like dry wood, ash, and damp leaves just starting to die. You’re roasting marshmallows and pressing them between graham crackers, getting your fingers all sticky in the process. Your hoodie smells like smoke, and everyone is telling ghost stories while the fire slowly burns down. Overall, I really like this. It is sweet, smoky, woody, nutty, resinous, and autumnal, with a campfire-gourmand quality that feels very wearable while still having depth.

This fragrance is one of the best winter scents ever made. Smoke and synthetic sweetness are balanced incredibly well, while resting gently on a dark woody base. Great longevity and decent projection, like most of Toskovat's extraits. The story behind this perfume is poignant as well, as it represents a sense of fortitude through cold weather and hard times. Its a very linear scent, but that's not a problem given how well the notes are blended. This would be one of the first perfumes I'd share with someone who is skeptical of Toskovat or any artistic fragrance, as its one of the most mass appealing scents in their entire line.

Strongly agree with @Junsniper08. I've tried a number of Toskovat's by now and only few seemed at the very least okay to me while this one is simply amazing. It is a By the Fireplace/Jazz Club's depressed sister—less refined and classy, more mournful and bitter. The woods here are clear and aromatic, really getting into your sinuses, the sweetness is deep and thick but not cloying, the nuttiness is what I imagine when one says the word. There's little to no weird synthetic gimmick going on which is a common occurrence with Toskovat. Good balance between artsy and wearable.

I'll start this by saying I'm not a big perfume person. My everyday perfume has been Your Turn by Eilish fragrances since I bought it. I bought a sample of this on a whim. This perfume makes me want to bite it off of my skin. At first it smelled like my ex-priest grandpa, which I wasn't crazy about, but then it dried into this sweet OUGHHGHGHHGHG MY GOODNESS . I smell like a knight who lovingly made the most perfect toasted marshmallow for his beloved prince. Usually I don't like sweet scents, but goodness gracious this is so delicious in every way

wow. thats the only thing i can say about this fragrance that hasn't been encapsulated in the pictures we see provided in the presentation. but i'll give it a go because i usually tend to care about my reviews for the fragrances i truly love. imagine you're at a campfire with your friends, roasting marshmallows and making s'mores. they're obviously burnt, but you guys don't care. sitting down, reminiscing on your childhood, and where all of the time went while smoking a tobacco pipe. what a beautiful fragrance, genuinely so beautiful. 10/10

I love dark, smoky fragrances and to me, this is dark and smoky meets cozy and sweet. The opening is caramelly, smokey, and peppery. It's very unique, but still very enjoyable. As it dries down, the smokiness fades and you get more of the woods. The middle for me is woody, light caramel, and touch of spicy pepper. The dry down is a very enjoyable skin scent of marshmallowy woods. The smoke and pepper fades completely and you're left with this soft, pillowy sweetness. Very nice. This has become my favorite cold weather fragrance.

such a masterpiece. at the first whiff it hits the nose with some carob and pine, then we get a woody / green soft masculine scent, some maple syrup, and it lies down sweet and quirky. very comfortable fragrance, same odeur profile as By The Fireplace, but muuuuch more complex and mutating ! 10/10 i tried almost everything from the perfumer and this one is the most lovable and wearable.

This reminds me if the fireplace in "by the fireplace" was taken place in an abandoned dirty house with a very leaky ceiling. The only thing you have left is your sorrows and in your bag is marshmallows and whisky. This is one of my faves from the lineup and one that I bought a full bottle of.

It smells like an oak tree developed sentience, its roots transformed into legs, then it walks into a bar for cognac and a cig. Honestly, great fragrance - a little sweet but very woody. It's rich but not overwhelming; I would quite happily buy a full-size bottle.

wow is this fragrance stunning. nutty, a little smoky, sweet, and beautiful. the marshmallow note is apparent here, but also the marron glace, which is done beautifully. very glad i got a sample and will be buying a full bottle if i even can find one. 9.5/10

maple syrup on top of a campfire 9/10 EDIT : considering a full bottle this stuff is incredible campfire maple syrup with a base of woods. this is the cabin scent without a shadow of a doubt the most cabin vibe from a fragrance ive ever smelt

Absolutely amazing. Defenitely a fragrance for myself to enjoy as opposed to a mass appealing going out fragrance. Super sweet and soft with a nice pine. Something about it brings a little sorrow or sad feel. Beautiful work of art.

This is very nice. I was initially disappointed but it quickly grew on me. starts off a little sweet and smoky with a slight forest vibe. dry down reminded me of a darker, more unique PDM Althair. This is very nice.

the PERFECT campfire roasted marshmallow perfume!!! it smells exactly like when i roasted a bag of marshmallows at a beach bonfire and came home with a burnt marshmallow smell on all of my clothes

Sweet, woody, a little nutty, and another quality almost like camphor or menthol. The sweetness reminds me of cream soda. There's something both comforting and ethereal about this one.

When I first heard about Toskovat’ I was led to believe that their fragrances were weird and unwearable, and I think that is why I am getting so blown away by this one. Imagine that you are in a big, warm, cozy cabin with a grand fireplace. You have a glass of brown liquor in your hand while you are sitting in a recliner, completely relaxed and watching something unfolding in front of you. The sweet whiskey top notes in the perfume forms an intimate relationship with pipe tobacco. And while you are watching their secret romance the embers in the fireplace are slowly dying out but it doesn’t matter because you’re still warm and cozy. So, I truly understand the ‘Forlorn Embers’ part, but what is the ‘Black Reigns’? I have tried to take my nose on several journeys with this perfume. Could the ‘Black Reigns’ just mean the ashy aspect after the fireplace has died down? And if so, why don’t I smell the ash more prominently? I get the woods, several of them, but they are burning, never really burning down. So, I don’t think that is the ‘Black Reigns’ for me. The only thing I think it could be is the sweet liquorice? The kind I have grown up eating. Sweet scandinavian salmiac liquorice. Because that is a really heavy note to my nose, and I can’t even begin to explain which notes that combines to make me smell that. The dried fruits combined with... ? I am at a loss, but what I know is that I really adores it. It gets nostalgic even though I have no memory connected to the smell at all. Its just one of those fragrances that you get really intrigued by and end up really liking. I understand how this could be a hit or miss for many, and I would absolutely recommend trying before buying, but try it. Give this one a chance! And if you end up liking it you will be rewarded with great sillage and longevity, and a perfume you could make work in many different settings and seasons!

While it doesn't deliver on a smoke/campfire/booze scent that I expected, It's still a thumbs up from me. Very cozy and sweet. Not the smoky cowboy campfire scene reviews here might suggest. Some reviews here built up a grander expectation in my head of what this fragrance would be. However, this is still a wonderful scent. Instead of a campfire with fiery tobacco and smoke as I was expecting it to be, it instead opens softly with a sweet, powdery scent like vanilla marshmallows, graham crackers and dried yellow grass steeped lightly in honey. My experience was more akin to a sweet, skin-like scent that's hard to dislike. Perhaps I could compare it to smores, very light cream soda, sugar-dusted marshmallow, a dash of vanilla, or plain powdered coffee creamer. It strikes a nice balance, avoiding being cloying, overly sweet, dry, or wet. I would almost compare it to Divin' Enfant by Etat Libre d'Orange, and perhaps it might be a cute pairing with Zoologist's Chipmunk. This is not a particularly strong fragrance, and I'm a huge fan of that here. Another bonus is that it is remarkably stubborn and lingers even after a full shower! Talk about endurance! It is static and unchanging for the most part. I'm someone who's generally very averse to gourmands and sweet fragrances, and I still enjoy this one. This is a great gourmand fragrance for those who typically shy away from them. I highly recommend spraying this one at the back of the neck if you wish to flirt or just want people to notice your or turn heads.

This is suuuuch a wild ride! I really wasn't a huge fan at first, I thought the smoked woodiness was wayy too overbearing at first, not sweet at all like everyone has been saying. Definitely get the campfire vibe though. It's like drinking spiced rum by a campfire, in a big empty expanse in a pine tree forest. It's dark and moody, foggy. This scent wears carhartt beanies and shops at REI and loves hiking at 5 am to watch the sun rise. THEN several hours later, it becomes this super yummy jammy sweet scent. I don't know how to explain it at all. It must be the dried fruits coming out more because to me it smelled like a delicious fruity marmalade on a smore?? minus the chocolate. I have no idea what it was. Either way, the journey was so worth it because the sillage was incredible for hours.

Sweet, warm, woody, but not boozy at all? To be honest, I thought this would be a lot crazier looking through the notes. I do get the by the fireplace similarities, they're totally alike, except this one is a tad dustier with some slight bitter greenness I assume is from the pine? As it dries down the greenness does show it's face a bit more, but the longevity isn't very good, so sadly you don't get it for very long. Overall very enjoyable fragrance, but.... not worth it for the price.

Boreal bacchanalia. Go home marshmallow, you’re drunk! Bombastic, boozy, and oh-so-sweet. Woody notes create a naturalistic, forested backdrop for outdoor revelry. I don’t smell much ash or smoke, maybe the fire has died down by the time I show up to the party, but I definitely sense the liquor, desserts, and subtly botanical elements. Dry-down is extra sappy-sweet. Like going on vacation to Dionysus’s dude ranch.

HOLY this is absolutely nuts. Quite literally too. Picture this - a caravan of horses and their men settle down in the deep forest and gather together to ignite a bonfire, and they all bring out sticks with marshmallows and walnuts to cook on top of the fire, and the marshmallows and walnuts get that smoky taste and smell after being burnt for too long.

Very heavy dark, old woods. Nice old cabin vibe with a hint of tobacco, and marshmallowy sweetness. Comforting to smell, I like it.

this was a nice warming boozy fragrance i feel like this is very normal and not as eccentric as the others in the range

i cant even lie this smells llike intoxicated by killian lol. Very lovely scent just not mindblowingly awesome

What a 40 year old freshly broken up diabetic father of one would smell like,at a bar at midnight. The top notes were quite fresh and fruity, bourbon and tobacco smells are very prominent mid notes and their sillage is what stands out about this perfume. The sweetness of the s’mores gives it a cake like quality at the base notes which overpowers most other scents at some point. Overall a very steady not that evolving perfume with a medium sillage. Similarly to other perfumes by Toskovat, it felt very straightforward and ‘’it is what it is’’ from start to end.

Smells aggressively like Chinese medicine. Screamed when it hit my nose hairs. I fear the man who wears this - no really, I want him out of my sight. If you trying to scare children, or need a smelling salt to keep you awake as you are a long-haul truck driver, perfect scent! Everyone will think it's time for medicine and run away. Edit: My friend loved it, I gave her the decant as a gift. I was surprised it smelled different on her. Refined, sultry, precious woods and heavy copal. Still not my thing personally, but wearable in small doses - as in you will only need a little because it is very strong.

I smell like a Christmas/winter candle. Lots of deciduous smoke and sap, some sweetness like a syrupy marshmallow, and spices. It's not a bad scent but definitely not special. It's a little weak for me compared to other Toskovat' scents. I feel disappointment though because it smells like a bookstore/shopping mall autumn-winter season candle. It smells, in fact, so much like a "campfire smoke" candle I once got at Indigo it tricked me into thinking I was smelling that (which I no longer have).

The great northern from twin peaks. Winter vacation, a ski-trip in the mid-nineties, sitting in a log cabin, swirling bourbon while starting aimlessly into a fire, the sweet-turned-bitter taste of a scorched marshmallow lingering in the back of the throat. Y'gotta brush your teeth to get the flavor off your tongue, but you take a sip-too-big from your drink. Smells like waiting for someone when you know they're not coming. An angsty holiday season, laced with melancholy.

This is easily the best Toskovat fragrance in the entire lineup. It smells like a beautiful mix of maple syrup glazed marshmallow's toasted over a campfire. If you’re curious about the house and want to start somewhere other than the more popular Last Birthday Cake or Inexcusable Evil, this is a fantastic way to experience what makes this house so special while easing your way in.

Top note is a medicinal Chinese dries fruit (dates), similar to Rosso Pompei. Mid and dry down is all dry vanilla with some hint of tobacco. No sweet. This is my first scent from the house of Toskovat and it's not that interesting. May be I will change my mind after I test other scents.

wow this smells niceeeee. This woody note is complimented nicely with his blend of creamy sweetness, alongside with the alcohol note that balances the sweetness with a hint of bitter aspect.... this is definitely a very unique and nice smelling fragrance 8/10

It’s Byredo 1996 plus brown sugar with less longevity and less projection. When I first sprayed the sample I have I had to make sure I wasn’t spraying something else because I was immediately like “wtf, I already own this”.

Beautiful Beautiful scent. this just smells like youre in the middle of a forest prepping some smores, without the campfire smell. 10/10. only con would probably be how its fairly linear.

The most wearable Toskovat perfume out of those I've tried. It's nice but still has an underlying 'off' smell that is in all the Toskovat perfumes.

This comes off to me like Last Birthday Cake but a lot better. I would skip that one and grab this one personally.
