Ten years ago, I was wearing Chanel Cuir De Russie on the regular because it was the closest I could find to the specific notes that I loved in Cire Trudon Ernesto. How I dreamed this day would come and they did not drop the ball. Ernesto/Carmen is like an atmosphere of Havana glamour: sultry cigars, strong jawlines with dark stubble, Chanel No. 5 on bronzed decolletage, ceiling fans and leather club chairs. It conveys something very clean at the same time as something antique and dusty, intimate and lusty. That cigar smoke note is, personally, a reminder of the scent of a beautiful, swarthy man’s personal odor. I suspect there is a little cumin in here. This fragrance is warm, heady, and Old Money. It’s an incredible fragrance. I’ve been wearing this in the summer heat and it’s delicious, the rum and tobacco radiate beautifully. It is very masterfully blended so it smells expensive and refined. I bought it while visiting a Trudon store in Paris. The shopkeeper was wearing it, and it smelled so alluring, I had to buy it. It is very masculine leaning in my opinion, but that said a woman could certainly wear this. The fragrance brings to mind hot nights in Cuba, an evening ride in an old Mercedes, an old library with wood, leather chairs, and a wisp of smoke.

Love it on my husband. It smells expensive and I like the mix of rum, sweet tobacco and old leather on him. When he wears this one on our date nights, I can't stop smelling him. It reminds me of Byredo's Bibliothèque, which is another of my husband's favourites. They both give off that same vibe, but he leans more toward wearing Bibliothèque for the day and leaving Trudon for the night as it's heavier.

This perfume is absolutely stunning.. I can’t get over it .. I would say best release in 2026 among all perfumes .. unique, fougere, classic, addictive, elegant and exceptional. Well executed perfume from top to base with a beast mood performance.. this definitely should get much more rating than the current 3.96

The opening kind of gives classic barbershop and the dry down is pure Ernesto in a bottle. Others have noted it is a bit powdery on me but not a bad thing. It’s a very classic masculine scent but doesn’t feel dated. Now they need to turn Cire into an EDP.

This is a luscious bold A tier men’s fragrance. WOW. Would love to smell this on my husband or dad.

If you aren’t familiar with Trudon, they’re one of the oldest candlemakers in the world, and they sell very high end luxury scented candles. One of their most popular candle fragrances is called Ernesto. It is inspired by Ernesto Che Guevara. Carmen is the brand’s recent take on a wearable EDP inspired by Ernesto, and Carmen is unmistakably connected to Ernesto. It’s recognizable immediately if you’ve ever smelled the candle. The opening is bright, boozy, sparkling. The rum note is quite present in the first few minutes, giving the fragrance a slightly dark, spirited warmth without turning sweet or gourmand. Bergamot and grapefruit add an effervescent citrus lift, which keeps the opening from feeling too heavy. It has that familiar Ernesto atmosphere, but presented with more edge and intensity. As it develops, Carmen quickly moves into leather, tobacco, clove, and woods. This is where the fragrance becomes much more structured and, to my nose, distinctly masculine. The leather and tobacco are noticeable early, and I get a clear clove-like spice that gives the heart a warm, almost aromatic sharpness. The oakwood doesn’t stand out immediately for me, but it becomes more apparent in the drydown as the fragrance turns drier and woodier. After about an hour, the citrus has mostly faded, leaving a beautiful spiced tobacco warmth. This middle stage is probably my favorite part of the fragrance. It’s polished, elegant, and slightly smoky without being heavy or syrupy. The clove/tobacco aspect lasts several hours on my skin before settling into a softer woody-spicy skin scent with a faint powderiness. Performance is good, but not overwhelming. Projection and sillage are noticeable in the first hour, then Carmen gradually wears closer to the skin. I would consider it office-safe with a light hand, though overspraying could make the leather, tobacco, and clove feel much heavier. Overall, I think Carmen is beautiful and very well done. I’m glad I bought it, and I would repurchase it. That said, I don’t love it quite as much as I expected to. I was hoping it might become a new signature scent for me because I love the candle form so much, but it hasn’t quite reached that level. It’s elegant, distinctive, and unmistakably Trudon, but it leans sharper and more intense than I personally hoped. I think it’s great for autumn or winter, but I live in a place with very high temps and high humidity, so this definitely won’t be a spring/summer fragrance for me.

Guys, is it even legal to release something like this in 2026? Sorry, but this is an absolutely gorgeous chypre... A MONSTER of a chypre! It instantly took me to Bogart by Jacques Bogart and Quorum by Antonio Puig. I never thought anyone could put something like this out nowadays. I always assumed that scents like this could only come from houses like Rogue Perfumery, where some hardcore guy mixes chypres and fougères in defiance of IFRA, loading them with overdoses of natural oakmoss. At the same time, Carmen is not one of those awkward modern attempts to recreate a true chypre that you sometimes find among niche or artisanal brands - those unwearable, clunky, unbalanced things. This is done in a very convincing way, with a classic character, free of screechy, industrial, or harsh modern amber-woody notes. Alongside Bogart and Quorum, it also brings to mind Antaeus by Chanel, but without the rose - it has that same earthy patchouli base that gives off a “chypre soil” vibe. In terms of “brutality,” they’re roughly on the same level. I was also reminded of Devil’s Nightcap by Lush - a similar dark, almost chthonic atmosphere, though that one is softened with a fruity ylang-ylang note that pushes it toward unisex. Here, however, the fragrance is clearly masculine: woody chypre, dark, deep, dense, almost gloomy - yet elegant. All the notes from the pyramid are perceptible, and the balance is excellent: nothing leans too far into smokiness, woodiness, or dryness. The tobacco, rum, and clove don’t stick out. Ambroxan doesn’t jump out either and doesn’t spoil the picture. If blind-testing, I would never have guessed this wasn’t from the 70s or 80s. There’s definitely plenty of castoreum - Yatagan by Caron also comes to mind. I’m impressed. A must-try for all fans of “old-school” chypres and for those who’ve been looking for a modern take on Bogart by Jacques Bogart. The latter is a bit greener and more tar-like, while Carmen is drier and slightly more woody. The isobutyl quinoline leather facet is present in both. Why this is called Carmen remains a mystery to me. With such a name, I expected a theatrical feminine fragrance with heavy, syropy roses. I was very surprised to find instead a dark, twilight forest inside. I knew nothing about Ernesto candle while testing it for the first time.

It carries that same rough, mossy, and herbal-spicy backbone that anyone who grew up back then knows by heart, but executed in a purely luxury niche fashion. The opening drops dry rum with a quick flash of citrus, moving fast into dense tobacco, smoky clove, and raw leather. The drydown is dominated by dark oakmoss and patchouli. Okay am i crazy or does the initial spray of this smell similar to Byredo bal d'afrique?? I've been using the Byredo one as my everyday perfume and I just recently tested Carmen. They both have that gorgeous, bright bergamot blast right at the top. Woody fragrances are my thing and Carmen will be my going out and colder weather perfume. I love the way carmen eventually goes much darker and more leathery. And the siliage was crazy good from the tester I sprayed on my shirt. If I didn't wash it, I think I would still smell it

This is everything I hoped it would be based off the Ernesto candle I have. Warm, cosy, masculine, also quite clean at the same time, and with that comes a strong silage and very decent longevity. If you have ever smelt Ernesto and wished it was avaliable as a personal fragrance, get this.

Two things strike me. One, the loudest note is aldehydes, which are not listed, but they're there, and they're MASSIVE. Two, it smells like one of the more aggressive Nicolaï perfumes (which I'm not a fan of). It smells like an 80s masculine perfume akin to Krizia Uomo etc, but without the magical, non IFRA-compliant ingredients that made them great. The result is similar to when I smell modern reformulations of those old scents. Abrasive, scratchy, synthetic and lacking the cosy warm heart that made this type of thing so wonderful in the past. Having said all of that, it doesn't smell terrible, but if I'm gonna wear this type of profile it'll be an actual vintage rather than this.

I’m really conflicted because I’ve got this on my arm right now and one second I love it, the next second I hate it and I keep changing my mind. I definitely don’t think it’s suitable for anyone young or women, I don’t think it’s as nice as Ernesto but there are moments I’m really enjoying as it continues to develop on my skin

Now this is what i wanted Trudon to do all along: perfumes based on their candles. It’s taken them 10 years since they launched their line (which I wasn’t a fan of until this point). Carmen smells pretty much like Ernesto, and it’s stunning. Crossing my fingers for perfume versions of Solis Rex and Josephine.
