Burst!

Bright, fresh, and clean. Sunlit sour citrus pops in the opening, quickly moving toward dry powdery dust (chalk not makeup or baby powder), and settling into a light woods base (the pencil shavings—iso e?). The initial sweet-sour juiciness fades fairly quick on me <1 hour but a tangy green note continues to cling close to the skin, complementing the blonde woodiness and soft musk overlay throughout, ~4-6 hours. This is perfect for any gender to wear on a daily basis, to work, to school, to run errands, or just when you want to feel put together without potentially offending others. I love starting my day off with this scent at least 1-2x a week to get me in a productive and positive state of mind. After sampling 500+ mostly niche frags over the past 9 months, I still find Burst to be a standout scent. It evokes confidence and playfulness and avoids many of the pitfalls encountered with citrus dominant frags, where the citrus is overtaken by other dominant notes, too harsh/synthetic, or resembling cleaning agents. For reference, my favorite “pure” citruses right now are Profumum Acqua Viva and Laboratorio Olfattivo Arancia Rossa. Of designer frags, I find Burst to be vaguely reminiscent of J'adore, circa early aughts, but not as fruity or floral. Clinique Happy has a harsh shampoo quality to my nose and the combination of florals and sweet musk in it makes me physically nauseous. I’m glad to have discovered Universal Flowering as I can see myself wearing Burst for years to come. I also enjoy Fig Leaf (3rd favorite fig after Philosykos and Ichnusa) and Heliotrope Milkbath (creamy, fruity, shower fresh). Check out this line for highly wearable twists on familiar profiles.

I’ve been looking for a summery, citrus-forward scent that’s doesn’t smell like dish detergent or a spa product, and Burst delivers in a big way. For starters, the top note is Yuzu, so it’s citrus without being immediately recognizable as the more familiar orange, lemon, or lime, and it’s joined by notes of “Rhubarb, Apple Skin, White Chalk, Pencil Shavings, and Musk.” Now, rhubarb is a pretty subtle scent to start with, and I find that here it blends pretty seamlessly with the yuzu, apple, and the woody notes to make something that’s extremely pleasing: fresh and fruity, both juicy and dry (somehow!), almost-candy sweet without being cloying (partly because it’s also zesty and a bit sour). The musk underneath makes me think of warm, sun-kissed skin, almost like sunblock—and it actually smells great along with the SPF I put on along with it. One of the listed characteristics is “squinting into the sun,” which feels 100% accurate to me: this is one of the sunniest fragrances I’ve ever smelled. It immediately made one think of the sunburst cover art of Boredoms’ Vision Creation Newsun, and the ecstatic, joyous, percussive rush of that music totally fits the vibe of this smell. It’s uninhibited fun and satisfying complexity at the same time. It’s like eating a dripping peach over the sink in July while preparing a really impressive dessert with the rest of the basket. It feels like going to the summer wedding of your oldest friend and it’s a wild party. Longevity is pretty good, I think! I stopped smelling it after a few hours but my gf could still detect it in the evening.

I blind bought a 15mL bottle from Luckyscent based on the notes and reviews. I’m terrified that she won’t be restocking the large bottles again since this is a limited release. This is everything I had hoped it would be. Such a realistic yuzu burst at the beginning which sticks around throughout the lifespan, and the pencil shavings and potentially rhubarb notes surface 10min later to give it a pleasantly woody, waxy quality. The musk adds a comforting softness and warmth. It’s very tart but slightly sweet, and combined with the waxiness it’s very reminiscent of a Granny Smith’s skin. It is nostalgic in a way. It reminds me of being at those day camp events that elementary schools would hold on their campuses during the summer. I want a full size bottle so badly. Please restock!

This one really grew on me. The yuzu starts off bright and sour and eventually gets evened out by the musk. The pencil shavings accord is also interesting, it’s like walking in the Home Depot lumber section but a little bit waxier and lighter. I think the pencil shavings note adds a warmth/depth akin to cinnamon, without diving into warm autumn fragrance territory. I don’t get a lot of the Apple specifically, but I do get a “fruitiness” other than the yuzu (maybe from the rhubarb?) So it doesn’t stay a 100% citrus fragrance, but it does remain relatively tart. It’s refreshing and fun to wear throughout spring/summer and early fall. This fragrance is nostalgic, mature, and inoffensive/enjoyable to many (but still complex and a little strange). I love this so much!!

burst is such an accurate name - the scent literally pops in your nose. opening is sour, but it’s more of a sweetarts sour, not something sharp and offputting. as it dries, the sourness mellows into something chalkier, more subdued. the pencil shavings note grounds everything and adds balance. i don’t get any greenness here, just sweet fruitiness. could still smell this on my skin after a full work day. i purchased a 15ml after using up a dabber sample, thinking it was a limited edition scent, but it looks like they removed the LE label from their site!

I order this off lucky scent on discount and was pleasantly surprised. This smells like if byredo pulp, pacific rock moss and aqua Sexitus had a baby. Starts off very fruity like overripe fruit and pulpy then it’s contrasted nicely with iso e, a very tiny bit of suntan lotion to make it slightly creamy and some cedar mixed in. It’s very good and nothing like Clinique happy at all. It’s very good on projection and longevity as well

Mouth-puckeringly tart and juicy and just so much fun. It retains a green apple peel fruitiness even after the yuzu and rhubarb die down. I love the way the chalk/pencil shavings/musk ground everything while it stays light and airy enough for the hottest weather. While I don't think it smells exactly like these, if you like Pulp or I Am Trash, I think you might like this one too.

on this very sunny day i am wearing BURST! which is quite appropriately named. this ray of sunshine keeps in line w/ the traditional universal flowering DNA but also incorporates fresh elements like apple and yuzu. feels like 2009, laying out on a beach towel at the country club—headphones in, listening to unwritten by natasha bedingfield <3

The chalk+fruit combination makes this so wearable and not too "perfumey." It's so bright and effervescent, and I love the yuzu and rhubarb combination. Decent longevity and projection but this is mostly just for me. So perfect for Spring and Summer, and the beach. I am on my second sample so if anyone is selling it please lmk:):)

I mean all the drama when I say I cannot live without this, this is the perfect summer fragrance, it makes me GIDDY. It is bright, it is zesty, it is a little sweaty, I cannot stop smelling myself. Does it last long, no, do I care, no, imma keep spritzing away and let everyone have a little ray of SUNSHINE, stay blessed.

sour, endearing, dazzling; apple and yuzu powdered candy, sucking on a lime, staring in the sun for way too long, and writing in chalk on sidewalks. i reach for this whenever i want to brighten up my day...it’s the closest thing i have to a signature scent. i just love it to pieces.

Crisp and tart, super refreshing. I love the chalk note, which keeps this effervescent citrus from floating away completely. Feels like the last days of 7th grade before summer break or eating a popsicle in the sun after going back-to-school shopping.

An eclectic, pep-in-your-step citrus... sullied only for me by its opening note and flighty lifespan. Yuzu is my sleeper agent activation phrase. I’d drink poison if you told me it had yuzu in it. I once got violently ill because I ate a whole jar of yuzu curd in an evening. I haven’t found a great yuzu fragrance yet, because if I did I might never want to smell anything else. Alas, Burst! wasn’t quite it. The citrus is tangy and sweet, but I wouldn't blindly peg it a yuzu. Its fragrance arc is close enough to Gumamina’s Odette (one of my faves) to be a fraternal twin, but while she opens like a sweet-n-sour grapefruit edible, Burst! opens with a dry, skunky cannabis nug. It dwindles within the first five minutes, but unfortunately was enough to sour my experience. A pity because following two hours of sugared citrus and pencil shavings (!!!) was A+. Seriously. Dry down had me hollering Ticonderoga. Mental Snapshot: First day of school. First day of school at the commune. The classroom is a sun-stippled meadow. Some students lounge on picnic blankets, others dangle from the boughs of the orchard trees. A distant ukulele twines with the birdsong. Your only assignment is to vibe. You feel real silly to have brought all your pencils. tl;dr: nerdy hippie ✏️📒

this is a really yummy fruity scent! a lot of other reviews are giving it a bit of a childish and nostalgic description, but I personally don't get that. maybe I didn't have the same sunny childhood as the rest of the reviewers... anyway the yuzu hits you very fast, it smells sour and playful. when it mutes it still blends nicely and I immediately got he smell of cinnamon apple. I think the musk is what is warming up the apple, so unlike the other reviews I think that is what gives it just a bit of maturity. It also makes it more wearable for other seasons besides spring and summer. Although a fruity yuzu is not what you'd expect, I think this is actually pretty season-less and you could get by wearing this throughout the year because it's just that yummy! overall it's really addicting and I could see it being someone's "signature scent". I still have to try the rest of the Universal Flowering scents so I'm not sure if this one will be my absolute favorite yet. If a fruity smell with the perfect hint of musk is your style, I think this scent is worth the splurge!

I view this perfume more as interesting for the notes but questionable on wearability. Starts with a very interesting and powerful citrus note. The yuzu note is extremely strong, and rather sour, and fills the room. It kind of makes my throat feel like I had a tart candy. Super interesting sugared-lemon smell (most likely yuzu but smelled more lemony to me) starts to peek through, with a smell thats kind of like the inside of a school desk. The pencil shaving note is very unique adds a very cool energy. Wearability, for me at least, is questionable. There is the really cool sugar-citrus and pencily notes that are super satisfying but also a very strong sour note which might not be the most pleasant for those around. The sour note is kind of cat piss to me.

The first spray is very citrusy and fresh, and then dries down into something that smells like orange vanilla—the way a creamsicle tastes. After a couple of hours it smells like a powdery musky vanilla on my skin. The creamsicle notes that I pick up are a bit candy-like and I don't love it, but the way it changes throughout the wear is addictive to me. A lot of perfumes make me feel nauseous after a while but I feel like I could spray myself with a lot of this one and not get sick, and not overwhelm people around me with the fragrance. I don't know as much about perfumes as other people on this site so I don't know if I'm as discerning with some of the different notes, but from a perfume layperson (?) that's my experience with this scent.

this smells like September, equally as much February. It’s back to school in 2007. Not a childish scent at all, but it is nostalgic.. I think of the printing room you’d get the special privilege of going in elementary school where the XACTO cutter lived. Warm lighting. Chalky dust...notes of Voban, Hallways and overhearing the shuffle of students. Waiting on the hot slab to recognize your parents car picking you up in carline or the bus stop on a dewy morning. It smells like doing your homework after school. You can't sit still. Someone just ate an apple. You may be a child, but there are adults hovering.

squinting into the sun! I've smelled something like this before, and for now I'm going with washing my hair with herbal essence in middle school. fun, fruity, bright! It's a little sweeter than I usually prefer, but I do really like the vision:) The musk, pencil + limestone come out on my skin more than paper to keep it grounded. Playful. Burst! is having too much fun to care about time or place: wear it year-round

I love Burst! and I think it’s a perfect spring and summer scent. I get an initial strong green scent followed closely by the sharp pop of citrus, all carried along a wave of subdued sweetness. The yuzu is not a long lasting scent and over the course of a few hours it will fade. It reminds me of lemon warheads in the way that it goes from something so powerfully citrusy to just sweet. It makes my mouth water!

Fruity, fresh, bright, appealing. Light in every sense. The color yellow in a bottle. Not sure what the pencil is supposed to smell like but, as in most UF scents, there's something unusual and unexpected at play here. Wish it stayed sparkly-citrus-y instead of going juicy-pulpy before fading away, but everything dries down sweet on me (alas). Still like it a lot.

mmmm so fun and playful! bright tang, straight zest, refreshing citrus. i get a slight stank note as it dries that no one else seems to get ... skin chemistry i guess, but before i read other reviews i just assumed it was a genius move so common in UF, juxtaposing refreshing juicy citrus with deeep dirty musks no creamsicle or powder on me (thank god)

such a fun uplifting tart fruity scent!!! the pencil shavings & coral limestone add an interesting chalky feeling to it that makes this more complex than your typical fruity profile. this isn’t very wearable for me just because of personal taste but i can picture this being perfect for others!

if the lemon jellycat were a perfume. "soft & round" citrus with a nostalgic pastel glow. perfect for a warm september day with a blue sky... summery fresh yuzu is the star, but the apples and pencils evoke the first day of school.

truly a scent where all you can say is "oof!". not necessarily in a bad way. the pencil (or maybe the yuzu) is LOUD, and I wish I got more apple. but it's still a very sunny scent!

A typical but very wearable citrus, a bit on the tart side because of the yuzu. It reminds me a lot of Clinique Happy, which I don't mean as an insult.

I don't see it listed but the impression I got was of a tangy raspberry-forward accord in the style of Byredo's Pulp with shorter longevity.

This starts off extremely tangy and bright. It's an intriguing opening! But it quickly dries to a perfumey and almost aquatic fragrance. It wasn't for me but I understand why it's beloved!

Like eating a creamy, citrus popsicle and letting it melt into week old sweaty clothes. Also, lasted <2 hours on my skin

Yuzu, apple, rhubarb, and pencil? Then, rocks. Bursting rocks. Rank as a perfume. It's interesting, but it gets into my airways in a very uncomfortable way. It's really, really bad. Is this going to hurt me? Test strip in the garbage.

I will admit, that despite having one of the most notably poetic and beautiful fragrantica note visualizations, Universal Flowering’s ‘Burst!’ was not something I expected myself to fall in love with on paper. It genuinely takes a lot to convince me on a citrus-dominant concept, as smells like grapefruit and orange so often lean sterile and flat to my nose. Perhaps, however, my entry into appreciating the genre as a whole can be through the yuzu fruit, because a number of perfumes featuring this Japanese delicacy have won me over. Diptyque’s refreshing orange-creamsicle dalliance Oyedo, Japanese haute perfumers DI SER’s bracing herbal tonic Mizu, and Strangers Parfumerie’s self-explanatory Yuzu Soda, are some of my favorite options, but debatably the greatest among them is the yuzu note in Burst. Perhaps what entrances me with Yuzu as a citrus type is how little the smell recalls actual citrus fruit, and how much it conjures the specific simulacra of “orange flavor.” Tart rhubarb adds a neon red sort of vegetal-ness to the vibrancy of yuzu, and the resulting combination is laid atop of bed of ingenious synthetic fantasy accords to create a lighthearted vignette of what summer vacation felt like in the fifth grade. Notable secondary scents captured within the extroverted zest of Burst are light and tart apple skin, a blanched white chalk essence, and a notorious very much present metallic wood-miasma christened as a pencil shaving accord. I’ve found this perfume is very much something I wear for me. Be it spritzing it on before bed, or tucking a few sprays in the crook of my elbow, its hard to not feel happy in a stupid and unabashed sort of childhood way while wearing it.

Initially, l mistook the fruity citrus be a bitter mandarin before realizing it was a bit too green to be any type of orange. I actually find the main combo of yuzu and rhubarb more interesting because its giving bitter citrus peel without veering into functional freshness. Though, this fragrance is notably tart, so those who prefer watery or candied citrus might want to sample first. There's also something here that inexplicably reminds me of Universal Flowering's other scent, Holy Hell. Something...kind of mineral/metallic/ chemical, but its quite faint in comparison and doesn't persist into the drydown, maybe its the limestone idk. This is a citrus scent so it was never going to last like 12+ hours, just not in its nature. There's decent projection for a couple hours before drying down to a clean, musky, and kinda powdery skin scent. I'm definitely not mad at it. I dont know if I'd FB it, but I'm definitely not mad at it.

Makes me feel like I’m at recess on the last day of 7th grade before summer. Smells like writing HAGS in a freshly printed yearbook and getting sticky from a freeze pop on field day. Very bright, juvenile, fun. Like my crush sat next to me on the bus this morning and our arms touched and neither of us moved them away, I can smell the warmth of his skin and nothing bad has ever happened to me yet. At the end of summer break my male math teacher is going to comment on my changed body in a way that feels like the death of childhood, but I am a version of me who that hasn't happened to when I'm wearing this.

on first spray this reminds me of coming home from school as a kid to my mom & her the body shop mango lotion. i know there's no mango in it but that's exactly what it smells like to me. deeply nostalgic--the woodiness and muskiness start to peek through a bit later. i normally don't like fruity scents but this is an exception

Smells like a sunny pastel yellow, being excited for school because you can pass a composition notebook full of notes to your best friend, the side of your hand covered in pencil lead, simpler times, drinking juice instead of eating a snack, wearing a long pilgrim skirt and hoping your crush sees you.

Solid scent, freshness from the fruit but not clean or aldehydic at all. Reminds me of an Angel flanker by Mugler because of the buttery texture of the fragrance; I can't detectable what specific fruit, or the unique notes like pencil, limestone and rhubarb.

a sweet and tart opening of lemonade with juicy green apple. theres a syntheticness that unfortunately smells like lemon lysol on me :( was super excited for this one but i js cant get past the cleaning product smell of it all

A very happy sunny jovial scent. Water guns, very zesty fruity green jello. Bright green fruity ninja turtles ice pop with gum ball eyes. A natural yummy citrus fragrance that has the tiniest micro bug repellant vibes.

I'm blown away. The rhubarb and yuzu are perfectly sour. The apple skin and musk are creamy. The woodiness of pencil is def there in a nostalgic way. This fragrance is SOOOOO pretty omg.

So zingy and refreshing almost mouth watering. Like you are a little kid again eating citrus and rhubarb ice pops and coloring outside
