Salish Sea

I sat on this perfume for two months before reviewing it; because I wasn’t sure how to categorise the feelings it gave me. In short- I can’t. It feels like.. longing? As an Australian; my ideas of ‘beach’ tend to skew hotter than the cold aquatic this perfume offers. In my collection; the closest I would pair it with would be “sea of gray” by solstice scents paired with a men’s aquatic. However, my ongoing quest for SALT led me to this suggestion time and time again. And honestly- I’m so glad it did. This perfume is moody; it’s complex; it’s brine. It smells like rocks on a shoreline covered with a salt crust. It smells like a grown up vodka on the rocks in a sea shanty; with a photo of a scorned lover in your hand. Most reviews peg this as masculine, but there’s something so mermaid feminine about this/ If you want your date to double take; pair with a red lip and a fisherman’s jumper on a date over candles. There might be an undercurrent of sea kelp for some; but for me it’s just sea salt and cold air. My partner who hates most perfume loves when I wear this. This is now a top ten forever favourite for me. Five stars; bravo.

Salish Sea is a gorgeous naturalistic marine scent that successfully captures the smell of an untouched shoreline and the flora that grow on the sand dunes nearby. The aromas of salty ocean water, delicate honeysuckle, and strands of beach grass all make themselves known on my skin. I grew up on the east coast, and Salish Sea doesn’t smell a thing like the ocean of my childhood — but it *does* smell astoundingly accurate to the coast of the Pacific Northwest. Amazing how different the two shorelines smell when compared to one another. This perfume is clean and refreshing without smelling synthetic or overly “perfumey.” Really nicely done. Impressive longevity, too!

quietly & antigravitationally beautiful, like a ghost finally being sent to rest, dissolving in a million drops of mist & fleeting memories....now set forever to the wind. i used to live in Seattle and my favorite place in the world is still the puget sound shore along Discovery Park. this smells just like a rainy walk up the beach path through the mud and ferns and fragrant bushes and rocks and and and....it's so nostalgic and so true to my memories, it makes me tear up a bit :') soooo special to me.

The first time I smelled this it made me a bit emotional to be honest, it brought me back to my days spent working at sea as a diving instructor. The first notes are very herbal, I can definitely get the rosemary on the top. A burst of fresh, cool salty sea breeze. The initial punch of herbs give way to driftwood and the florals coming in on the breeze, and it all gently calms down into something very sensual but still light and fresh.

Salish Sea is cold. North Pacific cliffspray, kelp on the wind, sand and rocks. It doesn't develop too much, I just spray it and teleport back to Ocean Beach in 2017. Realism always impresses me, because not everything boils neatly into aromachemicals, but realistic air is something else. Amalfi lemon haters and marine sticklers, you are home.

First notes are animalic, herbal and very marine. Extremely interesting scent. It's got a sharp cleanliness (in the way that oxidization and salt is cleanly.. rather than cleaning product clean), with some floral softness to bring depth and intrigue. The pepper adds some masculinity and warmth that also helps soften a very cold foundation. I live on the PNW and it does a pretty good job at capturing that experience. The description might sound divisive, but folks seemed to generally like the fragrance, and my usually-fussy husband really likes it. However, it might just be my skin, but it dries down to pure pepper and loses a lot of that layering and interest. I wish it had a touch less pepper, because it overpowers all the beautiful, unique and intriguing notes.

This caught me off guard with its realism, capturing the cold northern waves of the Atlantic that I grew up around. The air, the brine, the seaweed, the sand, the trees bordering the public parking lot. Not a sunny day at the beach, but a downcast one, when the season hasn't yet warmed up to summer and there are less people around. Retrospective and a touch melancholy. I agree with other reviewers -- if these scents are familiar to your own history, this fragrance can leave you a touch emotional. A little more masculine, if that factors into your buys. Not a date-night scent or something for the office, but great for outdoors or days of quiet introspection. Another gem from Untamed.

I've never come across a fragrance that mimics its inspiration as accurately as this one. This smells EXACTLY like an overcast day on a rocky north shore beach, it's incredible. You can smell the salt in the air, the surrounding foliage, the waves lapping on the rocks; the mental image is so clear. Yet despite loving this scent, I don't find myself reaching for it on my shelf that often. On the occasional overcast, cooler spring/summer day, I'll consider it, but on virtually any other occasion it feels out of place. It feels more like a work of art than a fragrance, which may or may not be your cup of tea (it typically isn't mine)!

An incredibly unique fragrance. Opening is wet moss: a walk through the Olympic National Park. Dry down turns to seaweed, driftwood, sweet ambergris. I don’t like to describe things as salty, because i don’t understand why something scentless would be a descriptor in a fragrance. But, if any fragrance would be worthy of that note, it would be this one. 2-3 sprays will suffice — it can become cloying. Will last well into the night even if applied first thing. Smells completely different when sprayed on the skin vs fabric. Worth experimenting with the two.

it’s a beautiful fragrance with great projection (my partner whose sense of smell is particularly muted could smell it from several feet away) and immortal lasting power. i swam in my highly chlorinated pool and could still smell the seaweed, sea salt, and ambergris. it gets its ‘meh’ rating due to the simple fact that its just too heavy for me. it overwhelms on the skin and never quite settles into something fresh and light as i assumed it would. my partner is now testing it to see if it blends better with his chemistry, so fingers crossed!

By the sea and the forest... Salish Sea made me realize that many sea-themed perfumes are tropical and peppy. This perfume represents the wet and windy beaches of the Pacific Northwest. Salish Sea just smells like the beach during a cloudy day. Cold air, sea foam, wet rocks. But I also smell the plants that are commonly found here in Vancouver: honeysuckle and fir, making the whole thing so evocative. There is this wonderful tension between gritty and pretty. Some parts of this perfume reminds me of Tom Ford's Oud Minerale or Heeley's Sel Marin, but it's still smells very far apart. I’d recommend Salish Sea to those longing for the West Coast - it's a nice alternative to the 'forest floor and bonfire' perfumes often made in the same theme. I’d like to propose Salish Sea as an unconventional dapper masculine though: the mentholated herbs feel clean and invigorating, while the interaction between oakmoss and driftwood creates this incidental hot-iron sensation found in certain aromatic fougeres. It paints a picture of crisp shirts and rocky Vancouver beaches, a combination that feels illegal to me, so I like to think its Untamed's Greek heritage seeping through.
