Patchouli lovers, take note—Mea Culpa is a full-on patchouli ride from start to finish. It opens with a clean, slightly herbal patchouli that quickly deepens into richer, darker territory. If you smell up close just after spraying, you’ll notice something cold and metallic, yet simultaneously reminiscent of hot coals. I assume this is the sand note coming through. Soon, the heart reveals a smooth, powdery patchouli with chocolaty and woody undertones. Hiding just beneath is a soft, resinous incense that adds depth and mystery. With a bit of imagination, you might even catch subtle coffee vibes peeking through, adding a warm, roasted nuance that blends beautifully with the earthy core. It has a slightly vintage elegance without ever feeling dated. The patchouli never fades—it simply evolves. From clean to dark and creamy, and finally to a cozy, woody, musky vanilla in the drydown. It’s textured, comforting, and quietly luxurious. Performance is solid, with good longevity and moderate to strong projection—powerful without being overbearing. The presentation is also worth mentioning—like most V Canto bottles, it’s luxurious and eye-catching. The velvety bottle perfectly matches the scent itself: elegant, velvety, and indulgent. It feels like the physical extension of the fragrance. Mea Culpa delivers exactly what it promises: a quality patchouli fragrance done well. It is unisex and leans enough in both directions to be versatile, though its earthy depth might feel slightly more masculine. It doesn’t reinvent the patchouli wheel, but it executes it beautifully and wraps it in elegance. If you're not a patchouli fan, this probably won’t change your mind. But if you are, Mea Culpa is absolutely worth trying.

V Canto is an impressive project of the Terenzi family. Personally I love all of them. I have Mea Culpa, Irae, Kashimire and Magnificat but I sampled them all. Mea Culpa is straight Patchouli. Personally I am not a fan, of Patchouli so... condensed and heavy. But here me out, for a cold evening (even summer) going out dressed up your best, for a nice evning out... this is a 10/10. Elegant, sophisticated, heavy but not cloying. And exactly as described: pungent (it hits you in the face haha) and "chest of memories" earthy, deep. It is work of art, it is perfectly executed, refined. Not a blind but, especially if you are not familiar with dense Patchouli. Poetry in a bottle, Paolo Terenzi is an artist! A 10/10 elegant, full of personality, vibrant, dense and pretty emotions loaded fragrance. I still place Laudano Nero as my No.1 Terenzi

Mea culpa is such a classy fragrance.I can wear this whole day and night. This is how incense should feel in a fragrance. and surprisingly sand note made so much sense. The sand was a beautiful opening note. it sets well on a vanilla musk note. overall a beautiful scent. This scent is an experience it is not at all sweet. very deep and nuanced. LOVE IT.

#1559 in my "Tour de Fragrance" Paolo Terenze is absolutely guilty of crafting a magnificent scent. This is one of the nicest scents out there for sure. Good quality. Very attractive powdery, patchouli-forward fragrance, with just the right amount incense and birch. This is a must have for me. Signature scent worthy. Priced right.

This is the strongest perfume so far in my collection. Very powerful. It's not for women, imo. Stays on clothes a whole week! 2 sprays are enough. Lots of Patchouli and Vanilla. Very earthy.

It is very,very close to patchouli oil + thick resins, cool powder, bitter vanilla and woody notes. Projection : 8/10 Longevity: 10/10 (over 12 h on my skin)

For 15 minutes, it's exactly the same as Lorenzo Villoresi. Then the mea culpa comes out.

Such a powerful fragrance. Lots of vanilla and patchouli which creates a wonderful combo!

opens as a dark, dense, & gothic patchouli bomb with a powdery feel. some church incense as well. only a subtle sweetness within the opening, just peeking out from the very back. not to sound too cliché but its a very Edgar Allen Poe sort of vibe. cloudy skies, crows cawing, that sort of imagery. for me it stays that way for around a couple hours, then takes a complete left turn into something sweeter & close to the drydown of Coromandel. don't know if its just me but there are points this manages to even have the 'Chanel' sort of feel to it, without that distinct overdose of aldehydes. to me, unique in how it shifts suddenly from a transportive/vibe evoking opening into a much more polished, refined, yet familiar and 'perfumey' drydown. It's quite strong, loud projection, more longevity than most will need. fairly forward in its approach for sure, I happen to like that in this instance. I'd give it a slight masc lean for a more mainstream audience, but still would be completely unisex for patchouli lovers. I think it's best during the wintertime (the uglier the weather, the better) & on Halloween (imo it fits this function quite well).

First time smelling patchouli, I dont like it, but I can appreciate it, its unique and wearing it is an experience. Opening patchouli is harsh, almost stinky but it quickly settles down and the composition starts to shine. I recommend niche enthusiasts who like to expand their horizons try this one. Paolo Terenzi knows his craft. Sillage and durability are of course, out of this world, 12hrs

Big chocolatey patchouli up front but somehow ends up turning into a soft, powdery skin scent. The drydown smells like a root beer float with vanilla ice cream. A Black Cow. I like it but it’s not at all what I expected. Whoever says it’s “strong” is probably just talking about the opening. It becomes a skin scent within an hour.

Got to love eit. Sweet, powdery and geentle incensy. Maybe too expensive since it lacks performance, but it was a gift and I'm happy with it.

I have been reviewing fragrances on this site for nearly a year and I have to say this is the first time that I can honestly say I truly disliked a frag.. I found nothing about Mea Culpa that I liked. It smelled like old wood from wine casks, vanilla, spice and vomit...which quickly became overly minty, rubbery and vanilla. So sorry. I adore Paulo Terenzi but this was an epic miss for me.

Classy of all V Canto collection as per me. I am fan of Paolo Terenzi and his scents, especially this V Canto range and has been adding them to my ever-growing collection of scents. Mea Culpa opens with the sandy accord with the notes of sand and incense which settles well to powdery notes, patchouli, cedar and birch. Lastly, the dry down is all about the vanilla and musk with punch of benzoin. The warmness of this scent makes it fit for fall, winter and mostly for the nights. Silage is enormous and the longevity is eternal. On my skin, it lasts for more than 15-16 hours and on clothes, I can feel it even after the day. This one is more of masculine scent as per me as the accords are mostly of masculine taste though women who likes such accords may surely wear it. Good value for money is another good point about this scent as it makes it must buy. The quality of this scent is organic which is not absurdly high but yet noticeable. Even the patchouli is moderate and quite stable in this making this fragrance most classy. I am happy with this buy and recommend you all to try it once.

This is an incredibly linear fragrance. It doesn’t really evolve on my skin, but honestly, I don’t think it needs to. From beginning to end, it tells the same story. To me, it smells exactly like walking into a very old abandoned house that has slowly surrendered to decades of moisture. The walls are damp, mold has crept into the corners of the room, and cold water has been seeping through the foundation for years. The scent of wet earth rises from below, mixing with aged wood and stagnant air. I’m standing alone in that room with the lights turned off. It isn’t a comforting fragrance, nor is it easy to wear. In fact, I struggle to find occasions for it because the atmosphere it creates is so specific. But that’s also what makes it fascinating. I’ve never smelled anything else that captures this feeling so convincingly. It’s not trying to be beautiful in the traditional sense. It’s trying to paint a place, and it succeeds better than almost any fragrance I’ve experienced. 9.0/10

I can't find it :/ I did find your list of notes on ParfuMaria however, which seems less reliable than First in Fragrance; it falsely used the story of Mastin as well: "'Soon as the wind in our direction sways them, My voice uplift I: o ye weary souls! Come speak to us, if no one interdicts it.' There is great strength and personality in this rich fragrance of precious woods that can lead your emotions along the paths of freedom and pride. A bold choice for those who prefer not to conform, but know how to choose their own destiny." This is the actual one for Mea Culpa: "'Love, that exempts no one beloved from loving, Seized me with pleasure of this man so strongly, That, as thou seest, it doth not yet desert me.' A pungent and sharp aroma, it lends a strong personality and creates an aura of positive energy to live your day as an 'Indomitable, haunting and conquering spirit'."

Mea Culpa is an esoteric cologne that speaks with a 3D layer of scent only few connoisseurs can comprehend. It is an intriguing miscela of notes featuring mainly patchouli note with slight incense and a musky-vanillic trail lingering on for hours! Interestingly, one can't readily place Mea Culpa in an olfactory group. For me, this is seemingly a rare hybrid of chypre + Oriental vanilla (or something of the like)! I believe Mea Culpa was signed/created with unflinching virtuosity and I give Mr. Paolo Terenzi kudos for creating this "cosmetic perfume". Do I comment on its longevity? Projection? Sillage? Aesthetics? And packaging? Apt words fail me here! Ideal for mornings, evenings and wee hours for cologne connoisseurs who to want to make an unadulterated statement on their sartorial elegance. STRONG! SOLID perfume that is such a compliment getter and attention catcher that once you wear it, you are sure to being asked what are you wearing and how I smell this beautiful by not just one but by many many people that would come across you throughout day. This is amazing at opening, superb at heart and outstanding at dry down. Opening notes in this one is sand and Incense, heart is powdery, patchouli, cedar and birch. Dry down is vanilla, benzoin and musk. An amazing blend of notes that made this scent a powerful, beasty and earthy. Vanilla and patchouli in this are two notes that are present in such a balanced way that you are going to get them throughout but never overly. Initial earthy, minty feel is quite different with the organic quality. A classy stuff I would say. Amazing projection and superb longevity (more than 14-15 hours on my skin). Love. Love. Love it!

Perfect patchouli fragrance that is luxurious, boozy, and incredibly inviting at the same time. This reminds me somewhat of Coromandel by Channel and Monsieur by Frederic Malle but Mea Culpa is quite more appealing to me as this is more of a compliment getter and crowd-pleaser. Like some other people, I also got some minty feel at the opening followed by patchouli and the musk that oozes out the booze, seduction, and smoothnesssssssssss that holds me so tight to it that makes it a masterpiece. Longevity is long-lasting and the silage is super enormous along with the gorgeous bottle that itself speaks love, seduction, and lots of expensiveness. Highly versatile and super recommended one for sure. A solid and classy scent that is way more powerful than any other scent in my collection of fragrances. Pleasure and mystery in one scent. Stunner!

Earthy, minty and totally an organic scent with amazing performance. Longevity for this one is more than 12-14 hours on my skin. This classic fragrance feels like moderate and stable patchouli with the thick resins, bitter vanilla, powdery and woody notes. One thing that must be worked out is its price. Too expensive but the scent is doubtless amazing being powdery, sweet and gentle. P.S. The bottle is gorgeous too. This scent somehow reminds me of Chypre. This one is much versatile and could be worn on any time and any day of year. I think, this could also be someone’s signature scent. Highly recommended!

This is a best kept secret in my opinion. From the start , this smells like a rich and creamy chocolate filled with a vanilla bourbon flavored filling. Many bourbons have the same flavor profile as perfumes, which includes vanilla, spices and wood (oak vs a combo of birch and cedar). This is a welcomed addition to the patchouli-focused family of Perfumes as it takes patchouli down a boozy path, where you may have to be a bourbon drinker to recognize the connection.

Very patchouli forward fragrance. Opens up very earthy, resinous, herbal and a bit smoky. A few minutes later, the sweet, musky and vanillic backbone is already smellable, the powdery facets are definitely present as well. Overall great fragrance. Dark, sweet, very well balanced. Unisex leaning masculine.

Very good patchouli vanilla fragrance. When I tested for the firs time it's remind me so much to Obsession man by Calvin Klein. I love Obsession and Mea Culpa give me the same vibe of calmness in the cold season.

I am afraid I do not have a mass spectrometer for a nose so all I get is mouldy patchlouly...patchouly..and on top of that some patchouly...but the velvet clad bottle is quite cool. Cheers Mats Stockholm Sweden

Boozy blueberry chocolate lava cake & incense sitting in a oak barrel that continously gets rounder and more powdery in the drydown. The opening is harsh. Lasts forever.
