Tabac d'Armagnac: The Perfect Scent for a Rainy Northern Day There is something truly special about getting to the very last sample from a brand, that feeling that you have saved the best for last, and with Tabac d’Armagnac by Vanitas Parfums that turned out to be exactly the case. Living up north you learn to expect days that are cold grey and often wet and today was no different with steady rain falling over the coast as I walked into Tynemouth market. It was the kind of weather that calls for something rich warm and comforting and from the moment I sprayed this on and jumped into the car I knew I had found exactly that. Right from the very first moment you can smell the direction this fragrance takes. It opens with a beautiful sweetness wrapped around rich tobacco and it feels instantly familiar yet incredibly refined. What surprised me most though was the appearance of a soft delicious chocolate note. Normally I absolutely detest anything gourmand especially anything with chocolate as it usually feels too sweet heavy or cloying but here it is done with such mastery. I think the way they have blended it with deep earthy patchouli changes everything completely. It is not sugary or over the top instead it adds a depth and richness that feels luxurious and grown up and honestly it is one of the most incredible combinations I have ever smelled. As it settles and dries down the scent evolves into something even more special. Amber and benzoin come through carrying a sweet almost vanilla like warmth that feels soft and luxurious. The tobacco itself is strong and distinct but in the best way possible it comes across rich and cigar like rather than sharp or ashy like a cheap cigarette. There is none of that rough burnt edge you sometimes get with this type of fragrance. Everything about this composition feels smooth and addictive from start to finish. What stands out most is just how easy it is to wear. So many tobacco scents can be heavy rough or overpowering but this is nothing like that. It is a smooth drag all the way through balanced perfectly by layers of sandalwood vetiver and oakmoss that give it real grounding and staying power.
