A Lilac a Day

This. This is the holy grail of Lilac fragrances...it's absolutely perfect.... I feel that I am extremely discerning when it comes to Lilac accords; my mental reference is quite specific and it has been the quest of an age to find a perfume that captures it...or even comes close. A Lilac a Day is a fresh, dewy, living lilac shrub...it's the whole plant...lush and heady purple blossoms that hang heavily like bunches of grapes from verdant boughs...a cool misty breeze dancing gently with the leaves. It's photo realistic, true-to-life, it breaths life into my soul. It is the forest of Lilac at my grandmother's house, the one I would bury myself in as a child, teaming with fluffy bees, shimmering butterflies, and stealthy hummingbirds. It's my goddamn youth in a bottle. The only problem is....it's discontinued. 100/10...I will hunt for it until my last breath....I will sell my pasma to be able to afford the rare bottles that will hopefully surface for resale....and I will pray to any and every god that Vilhelm gets of their ass and re-releases it.

A big thank you to Monique who sent the sample to me. Lilac is always in bloom everywhere here in the UK in early May. I can always pick a few flowers for my birthday. This is a pretty good recreation of that scent. A touch more peppery than the real thing but very good and very wearable. The freesia adds the pepperiness. The galbanum provides it's usual fresh and green contribution. I think galbanum should be the official note of spring. Well, it is to me. The galbanum doesn't hang around long here though. The lilac does last though and it's very much supported by jasmine. Picking out the rose or ambergris is very hard. The rose perhaps adds a touch of sweetness. You have to wait an hour or two when the scent is waining for them to really become evident. Not surprisingly it's the ambergris that carries through to the end. A lovely spring floral and considering the notes it has decent longevity. I think it's a pretty ageless and timeless scent. It's for when visiting family and friends. Happy times! I get moderate longevity and sillage.

I am heart broken to see this was discontinued. I just went on a wild goose chase to track down a bottle. This is a photo realistic, transportive lilac. This is the month of May, standing in front of a lilac tree, breathing deep. Lilac gets a bad wrap for coming across as "old fashioned" or "old lady" or "cheap air freshner" but I will have none of it. I love green, natural smelling fragrances, so this fits my bill. Perhaps it mixes with my skin chemistry well but this is the best lilac fragrance I've ever smelled- followed by Pacifica French Lilac which is a bit softer and fluffy but still undeniably lilac. Yes, this is heady and strong, but that's where the beauty of purple florals come from, at least for me. Sometimes it goes a little Nivea lotion creamy in a good way on me. Also pairs nicely with a vanilla or something sweet to bring a different dimension, or make it more palatable to the haters. Also one of Vilhelm's more interesting creations

My grandmother had white and purple lilac bushes lining her property and each spring I would wander slowly amongst them, inhaling big clouds of the heavenly fragrance. It is one of my favorite memories. The initial spray of this perfume is the closest I have found to that experience. As someone mentioned earlier, it is every note of the lilac bush - bloom, stalk, leaf and air around it. I haven't picked up any of the indolic notes others have mentioned - just pure, fresh, not too sweet spring lilac. The only disappointment I have is that it fades to a white floral note about an hour or so after first spraying and becomes a faint skin scent that I have to press my nose to around the 4 hour mark. Still, I deemed it full bottle worthy for the gorgeous opening and warm memories associated with it.

This was love at first sniff, and it has been my favourite perfume for the past three years since purchase. The notes are fairly simple, with a strong linear projection. It lasts long on my skin and clothes as well. It's a realistic but deeper scent with the lilac being the dominant note. It's not a soft powdery floral - the lilac has a more mature (not old) presence. I'm glad that it is predominantly floral, as I'm not a fan of galbanum. If I could describe this as a colour, it would be purple and I usually wear it in the evenings for going out. I love this fragrance but my tastes are far from mainstream and I can see how this version of lilac can be quite polarising. This is my favourite perfume from Vilhelm Parfumerie.

A very unique take on the lilac. Beautiful. You know those gorgeous flowering tea balls? This to me is much of how Lilac A Day plays out on my skin. It starts out the lilacs buds...very green, the not-yet- blooming anticipation. After time, like steeping, the lovely blooms unfurl like the tea before your very eyes... And it's a lovely fresh purple dewy lilac. Exquisite. Very lady-like and realistic, fresh on the branch. Sparkling raindrops after a spring rain. A really lovely take on lilacs and one I am going have to save upon as it's quite pricey. Longevity seems to be good and it is leaving a really lovely cloud on my hand... Over time it dries down to a soft powdery lilac...

Smells like spring itself in a bottle. I fell in love with this scent, but not sure if it is because it has that almost medical green punch or because the scent is so close to a real lilac. Either way, it is a very bitter lilac, not just flowers, but leaves and stems mushed in one cup. Refreshing like an April shower, romantic. I love it, even though it is pretty much a concentrated lilac scent. A great alternative is Rue de Lilas by Phaedon. Both would be a great choice for those who like green lilacs, and not a fresh laundry type.

I was expecting to be disappointed and have it just be either an impression of the smell, or straight off just be a generic white floral. But this completely tricked my brain! It's exactly like lilacs, there's no need for further explanation. And to top it off, the projection and longevity are stellar! I'd made my peace with the fact I'd have to sniff at my wrist to get a whiff, but it just goes on and on. This is a piece of magic that will get me through the year until next lilac season starts.

My perfume dreams come true, I love how realistic this scent is to the real flower. I grew up with my mom cutting flowers from her lilac bush and leaving one in a vase in my room while I was at school, when I returned home the window was open and the scent of the flower would waft through my room. While this perfume is mildly heavier than a fresh cut lilac (like the ones my mom would cut) I think that's necessary to get the scent to project and last and doesn't detract from its loveliness

One of my favorite times of year is springtime when the lilacs bloom at the New York Botanical Garden. This scent is a wonderful way to experience the magic of lilacs on command. Some people are very sensitive to indoles—and in my opinion, they won’t like this fragrance. (No such qualm for me.) The only con is longevity — this fades to skin scent within three hours, so I need to keep my bottle handy for frequent touch ups. Not that I’m complaining!

This is a truly beautiful fragrance. The most authentic, fresh lilac you could imagine. I love to smell fresh flowers, now I can just smell my arm. So uplifting, a warm spring day, running in a meadow, I adore this. It sweetens over time; but not in a sickly way at all. In a perfect, sweet, lovely, flower way.

The whole lilac bush... with all the green, the purple, the bush itself, the weeds beneath and all of its freshness, sweetness and bitterness. It's a lilac garden, beautiful, but as others have mentioned, you really have to like this flower to enjoy this scent.

This is such an incredible scent. It reminds me of my mothers garden on a light spring day. Perfect for day-to-day. It truly smells like fresh lilacs.

This is like sticking your face straight into a lilac bush. It's perfectly true to life and nothing in here smells synthetic to me at all.

Indeed smells like a flower shop. No lilac for me. More like freesia, tulip or bouquet of flowers.

My initial immediate response: it’s SHARP green. It’s rough. Been lusting over this one so hard, talking my self out of blind buying every 3 weeks, after falling in love with En Passant. And after seeing Vilhelm bottle design 😍 This is so different from En Passant. A lilac a day is Super sharp green, not the same green of En Passant. This is Green green. This is broken stem type green, cut grass kind of green, not the living watery type of green of En passant. I think someone below mentions a sad killed green smell, (to me it’s cut grass) I’m glad I didn’t blind buy. But with this bottle and name, I REALLY wanted to be obsessed 🥲 Update: I hardly even smell Lilac, the SHARP masacred green smell never goes away. And now a month later, I’ve tried and tested a similar but toned down lilac fragrance: Lilas Exquis by Jacques Fath and I found that same sharp green smell, but toned down a bit. I ordered small 15ml Lila’s Exquis based on lilac perfume videos on YouTube from The perfume Guy as well as Tommelise. I would group Lila’s Exquis and Lilac a Day in the same cut green floral group. However, Lila’s Exquis is much more tolerable for my nose, but I really don’t love it. And I would say that En Passant is in the green watery-morning dew floral group (not aquatic in the way of popular men’s body wash or deodorant) En Passant has rounded edges and is green like REAL dew on a flower type of water “green”. I’m discovering that people use “green” to describe a huge array of smells. Which is accurate in nature, but I’ll note here that this perfume os GREEEEEEEEN and sharp! It is not round, it is not dewy, and it’s pretty offensive to me.

This is a proper lilac scent as others mentioned. Lilac is a hard floral to find in perfume and body products. Tons of lavender out there but not alot of lilac. The lilac here is treated the same way lily of the valley is in most muguet soliflores. That is with a hefty dose of soft (not sharp) green notes from which the purple floral springs forth. The greens, in the opening, are synthetic smelling almost to the point of smelling like banana. Whatever that aroma chemical is that veers toward banana, I’ve smelled it in Carillon Pour Un Ange and other muguets and it’s used in abundance here. That’s not really meant as a criticism, just an observation. I ended up selling my bottle of A Lilac A Day because it turns out that I seldom reached for this pricey juice. But it deserves the distinction of being the most realistic lilac fragrance out there and is a must try for all fans of that particular flower. Edit: I came to realize that I am not a fan of this house because all of their scents have an aesthetic quality of being streamlined, super-new, using only the latest mollecules. I need a perfume with atmosphere, layers of naturals mixed with synthetic effects. I need poetry and the feeling of a living breathing world. Lol. This house, like Le Labo, Byredo and others, makes perfume that smells efficient, HD, but void of magic, nuance, or timelessness. It’s not bad but I’m not paying $200-$300 a bottle for that.

This is a lilac explosion. As real to the fresh lilacs as it gets which also reminds me of bathroom refreshers. Sorry, I mean is smells great with lilacs but I wouldn’t get this if you don’t like a real real lilacs scent at it’s full bloom. Like you would smell lilacs and almost feel like you will get a headache from enormous flower smell, like almost you about to sneeze from all the Pollen in the lilacs (: A little update, I used it for a little and I’m wondering why musk is not in the note, it smells very musky on the late dry down. And I love it.

Lovely and very realistic lilac scent, that captures both the flower’s green and heady facets. Although A Lilac a Day definitely opens fresh and dewy, it is not quite as aquatic as En Passant, which I am glad for. Moreover, this fresh opening is supported by the heady, fleshy, almost indolic aspects of the lilac, that linger for quite some time. Its longevity and projection are wonderful, making this scent a great one for whenever you need a reminder of spring.

This perfume smells lovely, it's not quite photorealistic liliac, which is what I would love. But it is nice. It starts out fresh lilac mixed with fresh cut green leaves. But eventually the lilac dies down and it stays mostly green. Unfortunately this perfume had almost no longevity on me, after 3 hours it would fade. So not at all worth the price for me.

The juice from the bottle I got is an orange color. It could have been an aged bottle. The initial blast is a very natural realistic lilac. Green and floral. After 1 hour, I get an animalic ambroxan and aged floral note. Lilac scent is not that noticeable but still present for the entire sillage.

Fresh Lilac. Nice for spring or when you are missing spring. I love wearing this while reading as it helps take me out of my own environment. It is not sweet, more fresh. I marked it as feminine leaning but could definitely be a cultured gentleman’s scent spritzed on a neat pocket handkerchief.

Quite a green opening but this is quite a realistic lilac floral scent with a bit of sweetness. Best from the house I tried so far, as I have not had luck with this house. Still not my style and not fb worthy for me.

From my experience, A Lilac a Day lacks in the sector of wearability (or it really takes a very particular, unique type of person to pull it off). It's extremely sharp and has absolutely no sweetness or softness to it, which would be good for something less powerful, but this perfume has insane sillage and lasting power. Rather being an airy, crisp, realistic floral, it starts off with short-lived bold lilac and dries down to a scent similar to water which held a bouquet for too long: bitter, a tad floral and overwhelmingly green. A galbanum overdose, really. Overall, it's not a bad fragrance at all, I just cannot imagine it being pleasant on anyone's skin, but it would work as air freshener really well.

I sampled this a few months ago and wanted to love it. Lilacs are my favorite flowers but it just did not work for me. I didn't think it smelled like lilacs at all. I have several in my yard fully bloomed and the scent wafting in my house as I am writing this so I know what lilacs smell like, grew up w/ lilacs my whole life. It just smells green and floral w/ something weird mixed in at the dry down. Like a spoiled fruit of some sort. The closest I have ever come to smelling a lilac fragrance is Love in a Mist by Providence Perfume Company. It isn't lilac it is made from barona flower but it has a lilac quality to it that is lovely.

I remember the day I fell in love with this perfume. It was a milder than usual November afternoon and I was in London with my husband and daughter for our annual pre Christmas jaunt to the city. Liberty was the last place we visited that day. Walking through the entrance, it was full of metal pails filled with fresh flowers (unusual in the winter I thought) and smelt glorious. I made a beeline for the Vilhelm Parfumerie counter having read about this perfume in a magazine and Liberty being the only stockist in the UK (as far as I know), this was my only chance to sniff it so I'd been anticipating this opportunity all day. Upon first spray I was back in the entrance way to the store, my face buried in the fresh blooms, the cut stalks, the lush green leaves... I was besotted instantly! I've been searching for an authentic, green floral for years. So many floral fragrances are muddled and diluted with the addition of too many other notes, rendering them too fruity or artificial smelling. A Lilac a Day is the most authentic floral fragrance I have ever smelt of any kind. It is pure, lush green flowers, it smells exactly like walking into a florists shop (one that isn't full of lilies thank goodness), or burying your face in a lilac bush. Other floral scents may make similar claims but I guarantee that none of them will smell as genuinely authentic as thIs one. This isn't your usual powdery or sweet floral, oh no! This is a queen amongst florals, a truly stunning experience and superb longevity to boot. Back to that day in London, I looked at my husband with imploring eyes but he declined to allow me to purchase the perfume having already treated me to another perfume in Harrods. I've thought about this perfume ever since though, regularly searching the internet to see if anywhere else stocks it yet. This story has a happy ending though, two days ago on Christmas Day I unwrapped one of my gifts from my husband and to my utter surprise and delight saw a bright yellow box containing this beauty.

Floral and fecal. A Lilac a Day opens up smelling beautiful, like a green lilac, lilac bouquet and it's green stems. Almost tricked me into thinking this is now one of my favorite floral perfumes. When it dries down a few minutes, guess what? You smell an intense fecal smell, reminiscent of human feces, a smell that was not there at the opening at all. I guess the ambergris note is generating this missfortune. So how does the perfume smell? Long story short, lilac flowers and feces. It's so disappointing. Vilhelm created such a beautiful lilac scent, why ruin it by adding fecal ambergris?

As other reviewers have mentioned, this is a fresh, dewy, photorealistic lilac. I can see how some might be turned off by the initial green sharpness or think it lacks in depth. I love experimenting with layering and I think any vanilla/lactonic fragrance would layer beautifully with this. I currently have this layered with Soliani’s Crema di Latte, which is another fairly linear fragrance. Together they are absolutely dreamy and remind me of taking a nap in a sunny room with pillowy soft bedding, springtime breeze through open windows.

The opening is so beautiful and my husband compliments this one which is rare for him. But this is not the first time wearing that after the 15 minute mark it gets a touch... indolic? Smells a bit fecal when I put my nose to my wrist, but I don’t get that scent from the cloud around me. I’m wondering if it’s the jasmine with my body chemistry. However the cloud is a gorgeous springtime scent with the perfect about of green galbanum to make it smell very realistic. Unfortunately due to my chemistry issue probably not FBW.

Edit: it in fact was too good to be true. It was a mistake on the website and they sent me a completely different Vilhelm perfume 😒. As a lilac lover, I was so sad this was discontinued, I have been wanting to try this for so long... and for a little while... I could find it for a lot of money online if I looked hard enough. Today, I just so happened to search for it, and Joma had it for $120!!!!!!!! So I blind bought it.... I'll return to give a proper review once I've received it and given it a good sniff :-)

from the very beginning of my perfume journey, I've been on a hunt for a photorealistic lilac. the lilac in my yard for one week in spring is my absolute favorite smell in the world. This is the first lilac I tried, and while I LOVE this scent (and devastated it's discontinued), it smells nothing like my lilacs. To me, this perfume smells JUST like a flower shop- the sharp scent of cut stems mixed with the nutritional stuff they put into the water. It's sour and green to me, with just a hint of sweet.

This is a photorealistic lilac experience. It's disturbingly beautiful. The only thing is, for me, it completely lacks sex appeal. I feel like there should be something... mysterious(?) about a fragrance that makes it alluring. This has no mystery whatsoever. It's a big whiff of a lilac bush. It skews old to me, but definitely old and rich. Like the Queen. Wear with white gloves and a huge hat.

It starts very fresh-floral, the lilacs being the main player. On my skin, it dries down to almost a leathery lilacs. It has a vintage appeal that I like; I think I've smelled something in the same genre a while ago, but have no idea what it it. I'm a "clothes sprayer", and I'm afraid the vivid colour of the juice will stain my shirts, etc. A small like.

Lilac is very polarizing. Especially fresh, real lilac flowers. Like many say, there's something lilac scents give off that is very... different. This fragrance is as close to a real, fresh cut lilac I've ever smelled. It also has that certain sniff. If you love lilacs, you'll 100% love this because it's so similar to the real flower. Imagine a steel factory somewhere in the north. It's November, the sky is grey and low. The steel sheets and rolls are stored outside, where the cold wind blows. And there, among the shiny metal, grows the lilac. This is not your regular soft and fragrant lilac. It is sharp, rough, medicinal even. Love it.

This is a flower shop inside a bottle. Walk into any place that sells flowers early in the morning and this is it. There is something very “fresh cut” about this. Is also the smell of a fresh jar of water in which fresh flowers have been sitting for a couple of hours. Pleasant.

Very real lilac, without the real-life bitterness that typically accompanies a sniff. There’s a bit of champagne or bubbliness to this scent that gives it a unique albeit a smooth boost. Very pretty fragrance.

This was love at first sniff for me. As others have mentioned, it's extremely photorealistic. It convinces my brain that it's spring every single time. I want to always have this one in my collection.

I was so excited to sample this scent. Sadly, it was a true hate for me. On me, this has some kind of rancid note. It smells like rancid osmanthus and I couldn't wait to wash it off

There is zero lilac but it is beautiful green freesia scent that lasts. Very floral and very melancholic scent but I expected a bit of lilac.

I love lilac. My favourite flower! And have been looking for a true lilacscent for ages...this does it for me!
