Weil Pour Homme

[This review is for my newly acquired 1980 version of Weil Pour Homme; it turns out, it is far superior to the 2004 version] This is quite proper. It wears tweed, a bow tie, and sensible Oxfords. A progressive thinker with a conservative disposition, this gent switches from classical to jazz when feeling frisky, he'll intently watch Open Mind on PBS but his guilty pleasure is British sitcoms. Weil Pour Homme is a trustee, a benefactor, and a patron. Opening up with aldehydes pushing forward grey-mauve hues, I discern citruses infused with lavender and rosemary, it soon settles into one of my favorite pairings: geranium and carnation. This duo was all the rage at the time, and here, it gives me the urge to thumb through old magazines. Yes, the smell reminds me of 70s issues of Harper's Magazine or Life, featuring ads for Saratoga cigarettes. This is so lovably stuffy, I feel so bookish and square, I can't escape the notion that I am going to get lost in Tess of the d'Urbervilles as I begin to feel my skin manifesting a fine shaving soap and my body warming an oily, musty leather recliner, molding into it like very satisfied gelatin in a smoking jacket. At around page 510, I am a musky, wooden mass of contentment. This would be featured in my Top 10 fragrances to wear to your local library. I freaking love it.

Here's an unsung classic, and it's surprising that there are only seven review prior to mine (and no photos showing the earlier incarnation!). Weil Pour Homme was originally released in 1980, and the vintage bottles are prohibitively expensive from my research, but this re-release in 2004 is so well done I can't imagine that it is too far off from the original. The cool lavender, bay, and wormwood impart an austerity to the composition and this is counter-balanced by the somewhat more playful florals and spices. As it dries, it has the most wonderful soapiness, with the an Equipage-esque leather the intensifies in the base. The whole experience isn't loud or brash; it murmurs very nicely. I scored this for 18 bucks. Call me lucky...I am very happy to have this one in the collection.

A classic fougere. Its in the same vein of YSL Rive Gauche and Azzaro Pour Homme. I love it!

Did you notice no one can relate this to any other EdC? That is right, it is very unique. Initial herbal notes later morphing into (very) animalic tones giving way to powdery basenotes, that is the olfactory journey of Weil. This general description does not do justice to the blend because without much effort one can perceive the different notes, attesting to its complexity - citrics, lavender, thyme, musk of the non-galaxolide kind, patchouly. It feels either dated, if you classify classics as "old men colognes", or traditional if you are fond of such like Guerlain's Habit Rouge and Vetiver, Chanel Pour Monsieur, Rochas Moustache (1946) and Dior Eau Sauvage. However, Weil is in another league in the sense of an outspoken and bold masculine character, thus lacking the grace of those mentioned. For the price, a worthy find.

I agree with those who say that retro, classic perfume odor ..... gentleman to have more time! I sprang from experiences such as Givenchy Xerius, Pasha de Cartier, or Marbert Classic ... Very nice scent Weil PH, which fits into the series! Bold edition from 2004, since no such tones characterize the current scents although highly valued that it is not allowed to dive into the old forgotten classic scents like Pour Homme from 86' .... :) PS: But I consider misleading to compare the smell of Kipling !!! I used it a long time ago Kipling Perfumery (Edt, AS, Deodorant), but it was not like the smell! I hope it will be available again in the Kipling !!!!

This juice is a well blended "old school" mossy, clean, earthy and spicy perfume. Longevity and silage are both very good. I've been wanting to get this for quite a while now and it was well worth the wait. It's in the same family as Azzaro Homme and One Man Show. I bought this from USA because I found it hard to get hold of in UK. Anyhow, this is a pleasant retro juice.

Weil pour Homme, a classic fougere that absolutely brings me back to being a little girl—this is what my dad and my uncles smelled like. It precedes Kipling by a few years (1980 v 1986) and they share some bones. To my nose WpH has a citrus opening, whereas, Kipling swaps out the citrus for tobacco, making it a bit more daring. They are both retro in the best sense.

This elegant, refined, and "barbershop spicy" UFO armada that is zooming under-the-radar, seeks to land each one of its individual crafts on understanding and appreciative shelves. Most akin in my collection to: Givenchy Xeryus for Men (Les Parfums Mythiques) Puig Sybaris for Men. Rochas Globe for Men. Aubusson Futuros for Men.

While this came out 2004, it very much has a masculine old-school scent from the 80s. It's in the neighborhood of Bogart (Signature), Paco Rabanne Pour Homme, and Vermeil Pour Homme. Performance is good and prices are reasonable. Recommend.

Well, I admit my initial reaction to this fougere was rejection. I thought it smelled foul, dated and crappy. But on other days and when I was in different mood, is smelled nice and enjoyable to me. Truth be told, it smells absolutely atypical for a 2004 launch. It has no tutti-frutti, no marine, no modern synthetic notes. Just plain ol' redolence of lavender, herbs, amber and aged mosses. Albeit it is very French, classic and proper, and even a little bit sour and stale for a while (in an aftershave-y, mature man sort of way), it is exactly that unashamedly conservative approach that adds a nice distinctive edge to this masculine scent. It without doubt smells like a man should smell. Aloof and severe, yet welcoming. It's a fragrance to pick on days when you don't want to make a statement, just feel clean and well-groomed. ------------------- Update: I found out that Weil Pour Homme was actually only re-launched in 2004. Originally it was available since 1980, so this is a classic indeed... :)

Nothing for the modern man. This smells like an attempt to create a men's version of white diamonds. I get 4 hours of white florals,yellow florals,a tiny amount of spice, a sense of rose, and some notes that make it aromatic. soft projection This is the worst men's release I have ever smelled and I suggest you sample if you have any interest at all. It is the older brother of YSL Y and that is saying something. I suggest you pass on this one. 0 out of 5

I believe this is a remake of the original "KIPLING" by Raymond WEIL that I have used around 1988 as a youngster (teenager) who wanted to smell like an old man, lol. I need to try this one to find out whether I am right or I am right, lol. Another classic I loved back in the late 80ies was "Samarkande" by Yves Rocher....

Lesson to every reader to think beyond negative reviews on this site. You never know until you try for yourself. This one is very well presented and isn’t at all dated. It’s a good flowery soap which lasts. Manly and deep. Like Prada for rugby players.
