Haze

Discovered as part of a curated discovery set, “Haze” has swiftly transcended its sampler status to become full bottle worthy in my eyes. This fragrance ensnares the senses with such an intoxicating allure that it’s impossible not to return for another whiff. As spring’s arrival makes its rich warmth more of a seasonal memory, I find myself longing for the cooler days that would allow me to indulge in its embrace. “Haze” stands distinct from “By the Fireplace” by Maison Margiela, with which it shares a woody vanilla profile but not its essence. Where “By the Fireplace” conjures a smoky, forest bonfire, “Haze” opts for a sweet and velvety chestnut prominence, a note that is only a whisper in its counterpart. The dry down is a testament to the artistry of Who is Elijah, a sweet, smoky vanilla that clings to fabric and skin with a tenacious yet gentle touch. Among the various woody profiles in my collection, “Haze” holds a place of honor. If “By the Fireplace” is the quintessential autumnal outdoor companion, then “Haze” is its sweeter sophisticated indoor sibling, a fragrance that wraps you in a woody embrace and whispers tales of cozy evenings by the hearth.

I love this fragrance. It has all the lovely elements of By The Fireplace, without the smack-in-the-face pungent smokiness and oily undertone. It is also a consistent scent - I know what to expect every time I spray it, whereas By The Fireplace is temperamental and unpredictable, depending on the time of day, weather, body chemistry etc. As GenevaX said, there is a coolness to Haze, which makes it more suitable for daytime wear. Longevity isn't phenomenal, but this doesn't worry me considering the price. Sometimes I will put it on during the day and then layer By The Fireplace over the top towards the evening, but I do prefer this one to the Replica scent (better value for money too). I will definitely be repurchasing it when my bottle is finished, whereas I doubt I will buy By The Fireplace again, as much as I like it. I think I would prefer By The Fireplace as a room scent or candle.

At first spray, I wasn’t a fan. I got the vanilla but also an overpowering blast of ‘camp fire’. I gave it time to settle as you can’t judge a fragrance on first spray. After a few minutes I was ready to wash it off, but continued to persevere and I’m so glad I did! The ‘camp fire’ disappeared and after around 30 minutes I was left with a unique, delicate, powdery vanilla with an ever so subtle smokiness. It really is one of those you need to try for yourself to understand what I’m describing as while it is a soft, sweet vanilla fragrance, it has a real uniqueness to it. Sweet and delicate but not sickly. It’s definitely an ‘adult’ perfume. The dry down is long lasting and in my opinion, leans more feminine than unisex in the traditional sense. If you’re into niche fragrances you won’t smell on half the population and are a vanilla fan give it a go!

Out of the Who Is Elijah discovery set, Haze stood out for me. The rest were bit blah for me, but this hit a mark. So much so I bought a full bottle. This is what By The Fireplace should have been like for me. I do like BTF, but much prefer it on others. Gets overly smokey and overwhelming on my skin to the point I feel dirty, like i've got soot all over me, and have to wash it off. Haze is a tiny touch smokey but all about the beautiful sweet chestnuts for me. Its other notes are certainly there but they prop up and emphasise the chestnuts. Mouth-watering. It's going to be a wonderful winter scent for me. Not sure how it would go in the hotter months. It's turning cold here down under. ❤️

A gorgeous woody vanilla fragrance! I'm undecided on gourmand scents so when it comes to vanilla fragrances, I'm always weary going in. But this definitely leans on its woody notes, and the dry down exposes a gorgeous deep vanilla scent that settles so nicely on the skin. Maybe it's because I've been told by multiple people that this fragrance suits me, but the second the weather dips, I'm spritzing this on all my pulse points! The price point on this one is great too - $159 AUD for 100ml, and they always have incredible sales and deals!

I love this one. It smells very vanilla to me, like a vanilla cloud. I do not find it reminiscent of by the fireplace which I cannot stand. It actually reminds me of another perfume from this brand called nomad - they are related I feel. And also poets of Berlin. If you are a deep rich vanilla lover you will probably adore this one.

This is a pretty close dupe of By The Fireplace. It has that same toasted, nutty, woody smell, like chestnuts and marshmallows roasting on a fire. I would say, however, that it is a little sweeter (from the vanilla) and a little less harsh/smoky than BTF. This makes it lean more feminine, although a man could still pull this off.

an ever so slightly sweeter btf.. the original smelled too smoky for my liking, almost to the extent of smelling like burnt rubber ; this smells much sweeter and well rounded, inoffensive. i wore this during my final year of highschool and i’m contemplating a repurchase although the longevity is horrible

Love this so much. Smells Smokey with vanilla. Definitely female not for men. I worked at a store that sells this and a woman picked it up, smelt it and told her friend that it stinks like a campfire... I disagree, I was surprised, but can see how to the unsophisticated it would smell like that...

Love this!!! Sweet creamy amber, so good !!! It's extremely feminine and so different than the other samples I tried from this house! I will try it tomorrow to see if has any power and projection but at first sniff it's a love!

I love this fragrance - it's supposedly a dupe for By the Fireplace but I find it so much wearable without the unbearable opening of smoke. More subtle, nutty, sweet and warm. It's perfect for cold weather.

Smokey, sweet, nutty, vanilla crème brûlée fragrance. I LOVE IT! I am not your gourmand gal but I adore this scent, because of the sweetness being dry and crisp with beautiful powdery softness.

Easily the best from the brand. It is definitely a replica of Replica's By the Fireplace but thats okay because it's slightly more affordable

This is my top 2 favorites from Who Is Elijah. It’s SO addictive. My other favorite is EAU!!

I honestly wouldn't compare this to Maison Margiela's By the fireplace - does it smell similar? Yes kind of. But it's not a dupe. BTF is very unique it has a heart to it that I'd find hard to replicate it has a smokey note that's inoffensive. Haze is sweeter and lacks that spice and smokiness . The note profiles are exactly the same but again different, i find they show up very differently in both as the day goes. I do like Haze on myself cashmeran and Vanilla come out on my skin really well and there is a woody sweetness on dry down with a peek of pepper. This would last 8 hours on me easily, and even when I can't smell it, other people can definitely still smell it. For the price it is I probably wouldn't purchase again because while I like it, I have so many other perfumes I'd reach for before this.

I actually didn’t like this when I first tried this I found it way too smoky and there was something about the woods notes that took over in a way I didn’t enjoy. I feel the formulation has changed as I sniffed a bottle the other week and it actually smelled really good. I find there are some ‘fresher’ notes and sweeter notes which balance it out now, or perhaps I for a bad batch when I tried a sample a few years ago. This is definitely a dupe brand and some of their scents are even confusingly similar to each other, but I do like this one.

attractive woody/smoky scent that would work well for everyday winter wear. the top notes are prominent in the initial, but it loses most of its pepperiness in the dry down unfortunately - would be nice if it stuck around for longer i think. after it settles the scent stays strong enough for a few hours, with the cedar wood and vanilla notes most prominent and some orange blossom lingering above. slight tobacco twinge here, reminds me the tiniest bit of TF tobacco vanille but less smoky and more wood.

This is sweeter, a lot less smokier and overall more appealing than it was when it came out . I’m actually on the fence about buying this. This scent used to be a lot more challenging but they’ve definitely tweaked the formula. Seeing as they offer 5mL bottles now though I think I will. I enjoy the top notes a lot but find this fades just a bit quickly, bit woodsy and pencil shaving like but still appealing.

This is a very dry, woody, smoky chestnut. It is similar to By the Fireplace by MM, but to me it isn't as smoky - more woody. This is unisex but leans more masculine in my opinion, maybe because of the strong cedar note that I associate more with men's scents. I'm a female and I love wearing it, but it's definitely not an everyday scent. It's a warming, comforting scent with zero sweetness that I can detect.

A cosy cloud of sweet cinnamon dusted vanilla, chestnuts, cashmeran, soft sueded leather, herbal balsam. Reminds me of library books and leather chairs and marshmallow chai lattes in the study. Nothing like By the Fireplace which makes me want to throw up with the smells of dirty cigarettes, hot dog water and lemon syrup on steroids.

Not bad. A little woody/(incense?)/warm, balmy/smoky. The vanilla base is a little too chemical for my taste, but the rest of the notes offer something rather pleasant for autumn. Not a masterpiece of finesse, but has its little something.

it begins very sweet nutty dusty vanilla, reminds - Cape Heartache Imaginary Authors. Then dries down to oud vanilla, very similar to Cartier oud vanilla. It is good oud, not very smoky

The chestnut and Peru balsam combined with vanilla is a hard no for me and quite unpleasant to my nose. Very smokey scent. Good if that’s what you like but a no from me

a toned down MM by the fireplace as with btf, the clove here also pulls quite strong on me.

This gets compared to Maison Martin Margiela's By the Fireplace, which in turn gets compared to Commodity's Velvet. I've worn Velvet for years, and have smelt BtF enough times to have retained a reasonable scent memory; Haze is a slightly softer, less abrasive version of both. The intense clove note of those other two scents is dialed down considerably in Haze, and since clove is, in my experience, a polarizing note, Haze may be a good choice for those who want the pungent spiciness to be muted. Otherwise, BtF and Haze are nearly-identical; the only difference between their note pyramids, in fact, is the nominal listing of cedar in Haze's base, which perhaps lends the latter a bit more of a cool, camphoraceous air, whereas BtF is all about warmth. As similar as they are, they might suit ever-so-slightly different styles. I've modestly enjoyed some of Who is Elijah's offerings, but overall, they simply imitate already-popular fragrances. It's a glorified dupe company. I appreciate their dedication to sustainability, but they are in need of an identity if they want to last in such a saturated market.

Smells very strongly like smoke, fireplaces, and incense, and like cigarettes. The smoke has a sweet smell to it as well, but it is overpowered by the smoke which is a pity. Most of the Who is Elijah? perfumes I've tried (I have the discovery set of 11) smell strongly like incense (a few smell like bad men's cologne) including this one. Lots of positive reviews on their website (which is hard to believe now I've tried them) and yet no-one describing what they smell like, which seems suspicious to me. Most of the perfumes are more masculine than unisex (as advertised). Very overhyped and overpriced brand. Regretful purchase.

Fragrantica has this listed as having the exact note breakdown as By The Fireplace, but these two smell nothing alike much to my disappointment. I'm on my fourth bottle of BTF. There's something strong and "perfumey" about this - you know what I mean. It's giving a little more Black Opium (of which I have also been through several bottles) than BTF to me. There's no burning smoky-ness to Haze, and the woods get lost in some kind of sickly sweetness. I can't smell the guaiac wood at all and it's one of my favorite notes in perfumery. It's okay, but I'm not impressed with this one. 5/10

On my skin the sweet, vanilla, and powdery scent is strong, up close the spice and smoke are slightly more apparent. Definitely has more of a feminine side due to the sweetness. The sweetness reminds me of a really popular perfume circa 2010 but I can't put my finger on it! The sweet side is Summer day, but the smoke side is Autumn night. I agree that By The Fireplace is much stronger on the smokiness.

This should have been called spice bomb. It's a decent spicy fragrance for winters. Does have the middle eastern Cafe vibes to it , good for a night out with mates where you're chilling and doing shisha. If it weren't for the price point I would have said it's a good buy. This and His/her are the only stand outs for me from.this fragrance house. Everything else was slightly disappointing.

The first waft of scent after spraying on my skin was lovely. It was soft, intriguing and definitely a little hazy. Up close, it was a little harsh, and quickly became very smoky. Woody, spicy, smoky - it reminds me a little of MM Replica By The Fireplace, but I’ve only smelt that on paper in store. I quite like it from a distance, but this genre of fragrances doesn't really suit me.

This is identical almost to a scent called "Ember Haze" by Australian fragrance house "Vahy". It's a sweet firey vanilla with whispers of cinnamon. Think fire place in the alps sipping a chai latte wearing a cashmere sweater. It's warm and cosy.

5/10 It smells like a floral marshmallow. Not totally in a bad way, but not a scent that I am super into or clicks with my body. There is not a lot of complexity to the scent.

Absolutely just by the fireplace by margiela, except somehow they’ve chosen to price it even higher?

I received one of the generous free sampler packs that Who Is Elijah sent out recently. All I had to do was pay shipping. There are 11 samples in the pack. These frags are definitely not in my wheelhouse. They all smell very masculine and many of them have oud, leather and/or saffron. I'm not a fan of those notes. I'm also getting a pickle smell from several of these. I'm definitely smelling pickle with Haze. Not for me. But I definitely appreciate the company seeing a free sample pack. Very generous!!

Haze by Who is Elijah features a beautiful warm, roasted chestnut accord with dusty cedar, cozy vanilla and cashmeran. It does share some similarities with L'Artisan Parfumeur Noir Exquis, which I own and wear from time to time. Haze is not as refined as the niche versions of which it is copying, however, it is pleasant nonetheless. I am now convinced that Who is Elijah is an unofficial dupe house, as many of their fragrances smell like several high-end and well-known niche perfumes. This kind of spoils the experience of sampling their line as a majority of the Who is Elijah fragrances smell like something I already own or know of well. Haze is one of my favourite fragrances from the house, and despite the vanillic sweetness, this scent is perfectly unisex. My only critique is that the cedar note is a touch too dense on my skin, leading to smelling like a cedar chest as the fragrance dries down on the skin. My partner responded positively to Haze, and was keen to sample it on his own skin. When blended with his skin chemistry, Haze smells more woodsy and less nutty or vanillic. On clothes, this fragrance has excellent longevity and projection, yet on my skin, Haze lasted approximately 6 hours and had moderate projection. This is a cold weather fragrance and a bit of an acquired taste, (as the note of chestnut will not appeal to every nose). I would highly recommend sampling this fragrance before purchase.

UPDATE: I just realized this is another dupe house like Ssaint. It hit me that it smells like 'By the Fireplace' by Masion Margiela. I looked it up and surprise surprise this has literally the exact same notes as MMs BTF. SSAINT has one too called 'Smokeshow' which at least had the decency to change the orange blossom note to orange and citrus and change Guiac wood to Cade Oil. Super shady as both claim to be original but both companies frags are duping iconic perfumes. I wouldn't be surprised if they are owned/under the umbrella of one company because now that I think about it. Their marketing practice, theme, appearance, etc is weirdly similiar. Trying to cast a bigger net to unsuspecting people. Dodgy af. Because of this realisation I have deleted my original review because copycats do not deserve credit or financial gain for someone else's hard work.

This is a gorgeous scent which leans more masculine, however once it dries down it feels too smoky on my skin. Obviously being called Haze I expect a smoky vibe, but it’s like I’ve just been sitting at a campfire all day and I lose the orange blossom and vanilla notes. I purchased this in a 6 x 10ml trial set, so I’ve really been loving layering this scent, particularly with nomad, which brings back a bit more of a creamy scent with almond and Bulgarian rose notes, making it a little more feminine and not so harshly smoky. I wouldn’t purchase a bottle on its own, but do love having the 10ml for easy layering :)

I bought the discovery set when it was half price and had high hopes, but honestly only two scents stood out for me - Haze and Rebel Rose. I was thinking I'd use my redemption discount on Haze, but after an hour it's almost completely disappeared. It's gorgeous while it lasts. As others have said, it's like a sweeter version of By The Fireplace. For the money, I think I'd rather get the smokier BTF.

Why buy this, When you could buy the real fragrance it's copying (Maison Margiela By The Fireplace) for less than this brand? Makes no sense. This appears to be a dupe house posing as original and "niche"? Ridiculous. lol

Agree with previous reviewers - a copy of By The Fireplace but much sweeter (in a syrupy kind of way) and less of the smoky/bonfire note. This is much more accessible than By The Fireplace, but far too sweet for me.

A softer version of by the fireplace. Very very similar to by the fireplace but by the fireplace is a bit more harsh and masculine while this is a bit more unisex
