Unheimlich

1st Impression: Intriguing, sexy, and a bit unsettling. Head-turner. Fall and winter smell, mostly. Animalistic and warm. Myrrh and ambergris at first, then settles down to an intriguing difficult to place scent. It is "too", too innocent and effeminate, too aggressive and masculine, too much of one note then another... just too much. I can see myself wearing this occasionally, primarily for evening affairs. Spicy, animalistic, with a bit of herbaceousness and iris to balance it out. Saying that, it remains very well-balanced. In a Freudian vein, it is an anti-transference potion. Protection from transference and from being seduced by the gaze of another. 2nd impression. Like the smell, but the leather or lavender gave me a bit of an olfactory overload. Wish I could wear it more often, but it is a bit too much for my (excessively sensitive) sinuses.

Recently I read a brilliant interview with Alexander Lauber, WienerBlut founder (published on Fragrantica, interviewed by Matt Morris). I expected some magic from Unheimlich after reading that. Have been wondering about that "presence of the familiar and the unfamiliar at once", the uncanny. I got tar and dust. Got really stuck in that birch tar and can't get any deeper.

A nice floral and spicy opening but then hairspray, greasy scalp, wet carpet, a dog owner's car interior...Unheimlich means "uncanny" or "eerie" in German and the PR text of Unheimlich draws references to psychoanalysis. Maybe this is what Freud's famous carpet covered couch at his practice smelled like.
