English Rose

Second review, for reformulated version (clear liquid). Top notes of neroli, rose absolute, chamomile, heart notes of rosebud and jasmine and base notes of sandalwood and amber. Opens a pinch fresh and bitter, neroli making its entrance, and quickly settles into a smooth, pretty rose scent, soft, feminine, with woody ambery undertones for sure. It reminds me very much of Cerutti 1881, that same dreamy, relaxed scent, though with different accents of notes. Absolutely office or hospital safe, gentle, unobtrusive, like a scented soap without smelling soapy. I actually love this version more than the older version with the pink liquid, which is dry and a tiny bit spicy, with a little bit more of a vintage flair to it. I like having both though, but be careful, as they're really not the same smell. Safe for rose lovers either way, but I would recommend the reformulated version to those unsure of rose.

Upon first sniff, this reminded me of Loubidoo by Christian Louboutin in the best way possible! I love Loubidoo for it's rosy and airy smell. This is way more rose forward, without that heavy powderiness. I think that's what I really love about this. The powder finish in this fragrance is quite soft and cozy. I never knew that I loved rose THAT much until Loubidoo, actually. For the price point of it - I'm happy with this English Rose bottle I got from Shoppers Drug Mart for less than $20. This pairs so well with the body mist version of "Cloud" by Ariana Grande. It's my new favourite combo - I'm obsessed!

This is such a beautiful light fragrance. Great for when you don't want to wear a heavy scent but still want to feel fresh. Very clean scent but poor longevity - it lasts all of 5 minutes on me quite literally. I own the edt, deodorant and soap. I absolutely love this fragrance. I love these types of fragrances - very classic. It reminds me of my grandmother! She loves Yardley. Great bedtime scent as well. This is not a pungent rose attar smell but more like a soft innocent rose scent - the type that still has morning dew on it.

As a fan of florals this doesn't disappoint. Clean, fresh and delicate this rose on a background of white florals (lily of the valley and jasmine) is suitable for any occasion. What I like most about Yardley English Rose is that there is not a single hint of old lady powder which many rose scents are afflicted with. I would most often use it as a daytime fragrance. I find it light enough to layer with other fragrances and elegant enough to hold it's own when you require something clean fresh ans comforting.

I bought this blind, knowing I like rose, to wear as a daily scent as an alternative to wearing my more expensive Jo Malone and what a good buy it was. Such a pure rose perfume, it's amazing. The dry geranium scent is there at the beginning but fades fast into a musky garden rose. I would call this a soliflore really. It seems quite strong when you first spray it, but isn't overpowering on. Just simple and pretty. I'm really very happy with it, especially at 12 euro for 125ml.

Rose being my favourite flower, I fell in love with this perfume at first sniff. It has a pleasant, soft rose scent enclosed in a matching simple but classy bottle. Sadly it's pretty weak and doesn't last long, especially on these hot summer days. If it wasn't for that, I would find it a perfect choice for rose lovers. I might still buy it again as the price is quite favourable and I just can't get enough of the scent... :)

A lot of rose-based perfumes tend to not last very long on my skin for some reason. Yardley's English Rose lasted 6 hours on my skin. A gorgeous strong rose scent (not light and 'watery'). My late mother used to own the English Rose talcum powder so this scent reminded me of her. Inexpensive and easy to find where I live.

A cheap gem! Love it for hot weather and it stays long on clothes. I also spray it between my clothes in my luggage when I travel. Clean crisp perfume . It doesn't feel cheap or synthetic to my nose which is highly sensitive to any synthetic smell. Despite having expensive perfumes, I think I will always refill.

Smelled this in a perfume shop and fell in love with it! I own april violets and english lavender by Yardley so i guessed i would like this too, and i certainly did ! A gorgeous fragrance wich reminds me of something from the regency or victorian era. Romance in a bottle! 10/10 for me! And extremly priceworthy!

Miss Guerlain, you are SOOOOO right!! I also think it has a great similarity with Jean Patou Joy, which I love very much too. But it is just what you are saying, are you willing to pay the price for niche or Joy, if you can have it all when you buy this masterpiece for only a fraction of the price?

What a rose! Not a polite, delicate little rose. A full blown aggressive one. This is an old fashioned "big" rose scent. Although several notes are listed all I smell is rose: clean, clear, and sweet as if just plucked from a summer garden. Classic, the only rose perfume you'll ever need.

This also goes for the "pink juice": The best rose I've had yet. Clean, fresh and easy to wear. Does anybody know, if the new bottle contains a reformulation with an altered fragrance as well?

Really love this. Feels nice and classic, plus a cheaper alternative to Rose by Paul Smith which it reminds me of. Probably 'cos they both smell of roses? ;)

Does anyone know where the old formulation can be bought from now (the pink liquid)? So sad. I accidentally bought the new bottle and it really is awful.

I've recently become obsessed with the rose note. Per other reviews I've written about rose perfumes, I've always hated the note because it was poorly done in every fragrance I smelled. It either smelled like cheap toilet spray, mosquito repellant, or cough syrup. After sampling a new niche rose perfume, I've madly fallen in love with the note. Most of the best niche rose perfumes are quite pricy, so I decided to hunt for more affordable ones while I save up to buy the particular one I sampled. I went back and forth about buying Yardley's English Rose. Yes, it has high ratings but has been around for a long time, just like Tea Rose by Perfumer's Workshop. I dislike TR intensely and didn't want a repeat of that experience. Also, English Rose is said to be similar to Paul Smith's Rose which I also own. I'm so glad I bought English Rose. It's a beautiful, soft, clean fragrance that's perfect for anytime wear. It goes on a little sharp-- those are the green notes combined with the rose but it settles fairly quickly to a fresh, pink juice that's inoffensive and sweet, without being cloying or sickening. It dries down to a clean, creamy, cozy, soft, and clean rose scent. I can absolutely layer these with the more expensive niche perfume I am targeting. I see the similarities between Paul Smith's Rose and Yardley's English Rose, but I'm glad I have both.

I purchased the old bottle few days back, not the contemporary version. I liked it in initial spray, like freshly cut bouquet of roses. Very fresh and pleasant. I immediately decided it is going to be my after shower scent. But the second day I applied it almost gagged me. All I got was rose water toner! Cheap and frustrating. I put it up for swap but nobody wanted it. I tried it again and realized I over sprayed last day. This one is quite strong on me. I splashed out five sprays, on skin and clothes! And I was working in a closed cubicle. The day was warm as well. Today temperature dropped and I sprayed only once on wrist! Omg! It is indeed such a beautiful refreshing fragrance! so, I got my lesson I will use only two spray on my skin in cold days and it needs cold breeze to bloom! It becomes cloying in closed environment. It plays well with skin than clothes. On clothes it does not develop at all, and smells like cheap rose water. On skin I get good projection for three hours and then it stays as skin scent for another five+ hours. It is very in offensive and delicate. I got a faint whiff of magnolia and spices in the dry down! well, it will stay in my collection but I wouldn't repurchase as this 125ml is going to last forever.

As many others have stated, I believe this version is the best and truest to the original. Unfortunately, this is becoming more and more scarce. It took me some doing and some patience to find this exact version but it’s worth it. The box is white with hot pink sides and a rose on the front just like the default photo. The pink juice is what to look for. There is a difference between this and the transparent bottle with the silver cap (a.k.a. the Contemporary version.) They have obviously different notes. Pink juice is demure but so beautiful. It might not be a show stopper with impressive projection but it shines in its own way. I feel like this is the sweeter, soapier sister to the greener rose scent of KK’s Fleur Fatale. It must be the geranium that gives this a bubble bath vibe which I love. Longevity is okay but lasts much better in hair or on clothing. It’s a no-brainer in spring and summer. I’ve found that this fragrance definitely needs to be layered with another fragrance for it to have any longevity or projection whatsoever. My favorite is Demeter’s bubble bath (formerly the Mr. Bubble version but now repackaged) because I find them similar. Anything rosy or musky will do the job though. 8.5/10

For the most part,i'm into florals. Love the fruity florals,floral-florals and woody florals. This is a delicious spicy woody floral perfume. I love it. Yes,dry autumn roses are center stage but the spices are very there with gorgeous wood base. I wore this the first day i installed hard wood floors in the house with my bf and it just seemed so appropriate to wear afterward,when the whole house was finished. It gives me a comforting feeling. I craved this so bad this morning and i think it's the spices. In all of my current collection,i believe this gem posseses spice that isn't a pepper note. I need more spice to my collection. This is more suitable in autumn & winter,imo. Too bad the sillage is only 4 hours. A good twisted on a rose perfume. Definately,not for everyone.

Oh niches... Sometimes very overrated & hyped. "Rose Poivree" by The Different Company smells very much like YARDLEY "English Rose". Only Yardley's rose is sharper. Not 100% identical, but yet still "almost like this". A big old-fashioned classic Bulgarian rose. A deep red rose in full bloom. Sparklingly vibrant, & with an fantastic strength, sillage & staying-power. The old-fashioned rose from the 1800-century. Note: Remeber to use it with a very light hand. A bottle of Yardley's rose will last you ages. YARDLEY "English Rose" is $10-15 for 125ml edt. "Rose Poivree" is $233 for 90ml. Well, the choice is yours to make - which one will you choose? ;)

A most beautiful, classic rose fragrance. Rose is my absolute favorite aroma in the world, and I've tried and worn countless rose perfumes. This formula by Yardley boasts a traditional English rose garden scent: fresh, soft, breezy, inviting. Serene. It opens quite strong with a bouquet of bright rose and geranium, melting slowly over time into soft woods and musk. The musk is very subtle on me. It would be hard to beat this value for a rose perfume at such a reasonable price point. The formulation I purchased is advertised as over 90% natural, which is something I vastly prefer to synthetics. Well done, Yardley.

Couldn't determine when my EDT spray was made from batch code checking but the bottle and box are the same design as Yardley Peony, which is dated 2008 here, so it's older than the contemporary version. Notes on the box are: rose, neroli, chamomile, jasmine, amber and sandalwood. It's not a green rose like Yardley's Red Roses is, it's a subtly spicy rose fragrance instead. Red Roses is fresh and dewy, whereas this one is more like dried rose potpourri. I like them both but would choose this for autumn/winter and the other for spring/summer.

While this is definitely not a true rose scent, it smells pleasantly rosey. Like a rose scented soap or a fresh rose potpourri. Or a rose petal tea. It is a diaphanous, breezy and oddly refreshing scent. To me it almost has aromatherapeutic properties since it promotes a sense of uplift and contentment and seems to create an aura of innocent mental as well as bodily cleanliness. Of course, longevity is rather mediocre, but for a perfume in this price range this is to be expected.

It's a very lovely rose. I am new to rose scent and I usually prefer non powdery smell. This one got me hooked. I love this rose, it surprised me. It's not powdery and is actually quite fresh. The rose is of course very prominent but in a clear way. For the price, this totally worth it. It doesn't last long (1-2 hours) on my skin and then disappear but I would gladly refresh anytime. Don't wear too much though, because 1 spritz radiates moderately.

This is a light, clean, sweet rose scent. It smells very floral and very English. The longevity (on skin) is ABYSMAL. Less than 15 minutes! Maybe because it is winter? But still shocking, and even for the price I was extremely disappointed. The rose reminds of late spring evening walks around the botanical garden. I've never done that but it probably does.

A very good daily fragrance that smells clean and not too overpowering. Gets me some compliments but not as much as some other rose fragrances. Super good price and also a good affordable gift for a friend. It has a classic rose fragrance that is slightly citrusy and not too sweet. Perfect for spring morning brunches!

I was given a bottle of this years ago when I was getting ready to attend my first jr high school dance. I remember I loved it then but the scent is heavier than I like to wear now. Still nice memories though and it even today it makes a nice linen spray if you don't want to use it as a perfume.

Elegant and clean rose scent. It seems quite strong when you first spray it, but isn't overpowering, not too long lasting, but I think it doesn't really matter as the result is just simple, light and pretty. I usually get complements like "elegantly grown up" wearing this.

A lovely, light rose with fresh airy notes. Unlikely to offend anyone. A good go-to scent for those situations you don't want to be wearing too much -- air travel, etc. I sometimes layer it lightly over my beloved Youth Dew for a twist. Bonne Chance.

krmarich said it all - Yardley English Rose is my go to clean, fresh and comforting fragrance. Uplifting and perfect for Australian summers.

This is a fresh rose, a clean rose, but not necessarily a modern rose. It has a bit of a vintage feel to it. And yes, very "English", it smells garden-y, like wafts of rose bushes in the air alongside the planty scent of geranium (though it's subtle). It's uplifiting, refreshing, but transparent and inoffensive (unlike Tea Rose which is snappier, greener and hardcore rose, which I actually prefer). Light, safe and inoffensive, though it might not appeal to a younger audience because this has a slightly antiquated feel. Performance is so-so.

To my nose, this is not a true rose, it feels like a gardenia fragrance that just so happens to be right next to a rose bush. English rose is as watery as it is dusty, smells like moth balls honestly, but I even like a lackluster rose so I have used half of my bottle as a room spray since it's so relaxing on my sheets.

I am pleasantly surprised by this one. It is the most used rose perfume in my stash. It’s fresh dewy rose that doesn’t smell soapy or powdery. I had really low expectations now I am thinking of keeping a backup bottle. As the current bottle is about finish.

A clean, classic, light but less lasting fragrance..

I love rose fragrances and generally the scent of roses. So I obviously have to have English Rose from Yardley. This is the thing: This fragrance is not the best rose fragrance in the world. It has a sharp, synthetic, spicy undertone to the rose. The rose is more of a spring, light rose. It's not a heavy one. It's also more of a one dimensional rose. You will smell one type of rose only. Again, on it's own this fragrance has a bit of a sharp, synthetic feel to it, but as it is so one dimensional it is fantastic for layering. As soon as this fragrance is layered on top of something else that sharpness is camouflaged by the other fragrance and you get an extra touch of rose with whatever other fragrance you decided to wear. That may sound a tad ridiculous, but I've been layering this fragrance over countless other springy perfumes. You wear Coco Mademoiselle: Throw a bit of English Rose on it and now it smells a bit more fresh and spring-y. You wear Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet? Throw a bit of English Rose on it and now the bouquet comes out even more. It's like you adding roses into an already existing bouquet. I could go on and on. It's even good with something vanilla, something lavender, something fruity. Each time I need a bit of a floral pop: English Rose will help me out...as it is so wonderfully one dimensional and great on top of something else. On its own you can smell the sharp synthetic note a tad too much. But hit it on something else and it's absolutely fabulous.

There's no rose in this. Seriously, this "English Rose" has woody and musky notes but not even a tiny bit of rose. I'm not just disappointed, I'm disgusted. Yardley perfumes used to be a reliable brand. What has happened? Is this a reformulation gone wrong? In any case, this is not the fragrance I wanted.

This English rose is, in fact, a very synthetic, watered down oriental rose. It starts off with a synthetic yet promising whiff of rose flavored turkish delight... And then, nothing! Simple soap has better longevity. You get what you pay for and, in this case, it is a slightly more expensive Febreze.

I really dislike this kind of rose, the kind that smells like an airfreshener for your bathroom. Unfotunately, most rose scents smells exactly like this... like a poutpurri gone bad. Give me a sweet, powdery, spicy and honeyed rose!

i usually love rose fragrant, this one is a bit funny. it smells nice in a distance but I cant wear it myself, there is this deep spicy scent in it that reminds me of the cough syrup... Sorry Yardley

Whenever i think that a fragrance is oriental and very heavy, its title contains something like "english" or "london". I hate this unsophisticated, banal, old fashioned, cheap scent.

ENGLISH ROSE As a certified Rose Queen, I love this fragrance. It's a fantastic rose but I must warn everyone that it's not a realistic rose which is known as ABSOLUTE ROSE. It's been chemically formulated in addition there are other scents which are combined with the roses to make something which is more of a floral bouquet. I have experienced the rose and geranium harmonic pairing before and let me tell you it's beautiful. White floral notes in this fragrance appear to be tuberose lily of the valley and jasmine. It is because of this white floral accord that this fragrance feels old fashioned and like something out of the Edwardian or Victorian age. It smells of something Queen Victoria would have had on her own dresser table, and even King Edward her son! Yardley's English Lavender is superior because it really does smell of beautiful and real lavender. This one is more synthetic. It's still very nice so if you're on Fragrantica searching for a beautiful rose perfume, this one is high on the list. But I would also recommend ROSE DE FRANCE by HISTORIAE. I love that one because it's a softer, sexier, sweeter French rose whereas this one is a pretty but ordinary English rose. This one I put on whenever I can't find anything else to wear and again it makes for excellent room air freshner. Avoid TEA ROSE by PERFUMER'S WORKSHOP because it's mostly chemical and too overpowering. I use it to spray my house with and in October for Oscar Wilde's birthday I used it during a seance to summon his spirit (he loved roses). English Rose is really nice but I'm more in love with Rose De France by Historiae. This is mostly an impressive fragrance in that it comes from a very good old British company that has history of its own and because English Lavender is such a masterpiece.

Let my start by saying that this was a blind buy, based on reviews and my romanticized view of Yardley in general [the notion of beautiful flowers blooming in English gardens, as well as "Yardley of London" being one of the oldest cosmetics, perfume and toiletry companies in the world - I figured they know best, right?]. So, I've been wanting to get my hands on Yardley fragrances for years now, even though I never actually smelled them before - apart from "English Lavender". Problem is, I can't buy them where I live and ordering them online is not an option either, so when a close friend who lives in the UK said he'd come for a visit, I took my chance and asked him to bring me "English Rose", "Lily of the Valley" and the new "Daisy", all by Yardley. I was so excited when I got them that I opened all 3 boxes at once and tried them all on different parts of my arms... and was instantly disappointed :( It's not that I didn't like them per say...they just didn't come close to what I've read and expected. "English Rose" does not remind me of roses at all; it has that powdery smell you find in those sachets you put in wardrobes and drawers, or the girly stationary with translucent pictures of puppies, kittens, flowers etc. I used to collect when I was a little girl... Mildly reminiscent of white flowers and talc powder, kind of synthetic... I have other rose fragrances that smell much more of rose than this one. I would be OK with wearing it as an everyday fragrance, or even to the gym since the longevity and sillage are fairly weak and the fragrance is quite inoffensive to most people, but my husband "strongly dislikes" it, so it will stay in the very back of my perfume collection, until I find someone who likes it more than I do.

(THIS review is for the PINK colored version) *Blind Buy* for today because I just purchased April Violets last week and really loved it! I wanted an inexpensive rose frag for bedding, linen & laundry--and I got it! English Rose is a light simple rose with some white floral on the side. I think I get a hint of Neroli in there too which is a nice bonus! Longevity is on the faint side with a spray or 2, but if you go overboard with say, like 10 sprays you actually can get whiffs a few hours later. For the low price you can spritz all day long and refresh ! My highest rating: WBABUB= Would buy a back up bottle PNDT= Please never discontinue this ! ----------------------------- I only wish these were more available in stores like T.J. Marshalls and Wal*Mart instead of having to buy them online (I'm in the USA - NYC suburbs)

I agree with II that this is a thin scent. It's a shy but pipeingly sweet pink rose (for the 1st 1/2 hour) that settles to more green than rosy pink (maybe yes, geranium). Not a full blown red rose like Annick Goutal's Ce Soir Or Jamais, or Stella, and after a half an hour it gets soft and powdery, then just fades away in a green smell. I don't get, at all, that its a big old fashioned Bulgarian rose or a deep red rose in full bloom. To me, its a chaste high pitched sweet 16 yo girl rose. I like my roses to be a dripping top heavy Mr Lincoln or Souvenir De La Malmaison. Sweet yes while it lasts, lacks depth.

This is probably the best true rose scent out there in my opinion. I wasn't expecting much since it is cheap, but I was pleasantly surprised. When I wear this, I imagine myself walking through a luscious garden in summer in full bloom. The sun has brought forth the rich smell of the roses. I cut the most perfect one I can find off a rose bush. I bring the the rose to my nose and breathe in deep. This is what this perfume smells of. Freshly cut roses from a garden in summer. This manages to avoid smelling like soap or an old lady, and it makes me feel fresh when I wear it.

This is for the original version, the pink juice: Yardley English Rose smells exactly like an English rose as the name suggests. It is quite a successful creation in its category (soliflores). Wearing it is like walking in a Victorian rose garden, very vintage, and very lady-like... The smell of English roses can be quite overwhelming however. I mean when I wear it I feel like I am smelling like a rose garden, or a vase of roses. This point reduces the actual wearability of the scent, but nevertheless Yardley's English Rose stays quite a distinctive fragrance.

Picked this up today as I had wanted to smell it and it was in TKMaxx for only £4.99 for 50ml. Bit disappointed so far - think they should have left it as a pure rose and not messed with it. Kind of warm and powdery, no geranium evident, meh. Will try it again but will probably end up getting rid one way or another. Update, 29/10/13: This has grown on me! Yes it's a very 'talcum powder' rose, but if I apply it, in the evening, after a nice bath using some inexpensive but lovely rose shower creme that I have, it is comforting and reminds me of childhood!
