Yohji Homme 1999

I’m thrilled to report that I’ve scored a unicorn: an unsprayed, 100-ml bottle of OG Yohji Homme. Launched in 1999 by Japanese fashion house Yohji Yamamoto, when its fragrances were still under the Jean Patou label, it was designed by nose Jean-Michel Duriez, probably with support from legendary Patou in-house perfumer Jean Kerleo. Yohji Homme attained mythical status and a cult following in the early 2000s, later cemented by Luca Turin’s rave, five-star review in his first Guide with Tania Sanchez (2008). Honestly, the juice is pretty freaking incredible. I haven’t been able to stop sniffing it since I got it a few days ago (I’ve worn it twice at night, once for a formal dinner and once before bedtime). Today’s my first full-day run with it. It has a complex, three-part structure consisting of 1) an anisic fougère that lightly treads on 2) gourmand territory and ends on 3) a dark, chypre-like base. The first time I smelled the opening it reminded me distantly of Davidoff Zino and Azzaro Pour Homme — the former, due to the lavender-rosewood; the latter, because of the lavender-anise. But all reminiscences end immediately, as Yohji begins to unfurl its secrets and take an utterly unique path toward an unexpected destination. After the initial aromatic burst featuring bergamot, lavender, anise, and coriander, it gains in depth and warmth with cinnamon, a more prominent rosewood, and a delicious licorice accord that functions as the pivot to transition from fougère to gourmand. I can discern geranium (or is it carnation?), but whatever florals are present are subtle and quickly subsumed by the irruption of its base protagonists, the real stars of the show: a boozy rum that takes you for a spin, a rich coffee that provides sturdy comfort (and prevents a hangover) and a fine grain, worn-in, brown leather that is only slightly sweetened by high-quality tonka beans and a creamy sandalwood. Heaven. Yohji Homme was a pioneer and is the perfect gourmand for those of us who don’t usually like gourmands. It’s merely gestural in this regard, in no way evoking anything truly edible. Rum and coffee: two of the best aromas in the world, especially to someone from Guatemala, like me. I have now found my holiday season holy grail: light, fresh, spicy, warm, boozy, semisweet, suave, inviting, and effortlessly interesting. No wonder it’s a legend.

Victor Hugo once wrote that if you look in the eyes of the young, you see flame but if you look in the eyes of the old, you see light. Paradoxically, this fragrance manages to combine wisdom with youth. Yohji Homme is a playfull fougere that whispers and manages to say so many. Hybrid in nature but pure in its intent, extremely complex and understated it enters the most virile category and achieves being a unique stand-out. Furthermore, it adds tremendous depth and energy in an otherwise too sober genre with a composition that screams of great inspiration and heavy work. Every time I wear it something new comes to my nose. It is has the freshness of lavender, the bittersweet aspect of licorice and the woody suaveness of cedar. It uses old school florals like carnation combined with modern notes of coffee and rum gifting an overall fresh warmness. The quality of the materials is way above mainstream and the fragrance gives me a sense of melancholy of easy going days when the confidence of youth made me believe I could go through walls. It also reminds me that with age usually comes exhaustion and not necessarily wisdom. Funny that like those days this beautiful fragrance has been discontinued. As of 2013, happily re-issued.

Yohji Homme by Yohji Yamamoto The good: Yohji Homme is crème brûlée of the fragrance world. It pushed the boundaries of fragrance classification, and much more. A dignified and unique answer to Annick Menardo's brilliant Lolita Lempicka, Yohji Homme took the "gourmand" genre and gave it a new face. A lot of gourmands are definitely warm and sweet, but often they're too sweet and can lack substance. What Yohji does is give sweetness to elements that aren't usually sweet, and gives comfort and sensuality to the accords that already are sweet. And, through the lavender and hints of coumarin, Yohji Homme becomes a successful gourmand/fougère hybrid with a decadent "roasted" quality reminiscent of a crème brûlée. Sillage and longevity are both excellent, but Yohji Homme is never invasive or cloying. The bad: Yohji Homme is discontinued and getting harder and harder to find. The ugly: Someday there may very well be no more Yohji Homme out there. Bottom line: Guys and girls, try it already. Yohji Homme is one of those fragrances that redefines perfumery as an art form, and basically establishes what a "good" fragrance can be.

This is sold in Singapore still though it's getting harder to find. Still, I got a 30ml bottle today for $45 SGD = $20 USD. What a steal! Regarding the scent, I actually got a whiff of it from a guy friend of mine and I knew I HAD to have it. It was love from first sniff! Warm, inviting, cozy thanks to the rum, licorice and coffee yet the citrusy opening makes it fresh and invigorating. Definitely try it! It's just so lovely and comforting, my go-to bed fragrance when my loved one is overseas and I miss his embrace.

I have just discovered this fragrance, and I'm sick that I missed its glory days. There are a few bottles available online, but they are expensive. I bought one anyway. The anis and lavender are exquisitely clean. The woods are so fresh. Yes, fresh. The overall experience is divine. This has been instantly elevated in my mind to a favorite.

Complex and beautiful fragrance! Shame it was discontinued. It has a distinct scent and is noticeable yet is not overbearing in any way- perfectly nuanced.

What a masterpiece this one is. Soft sweet and boozy fougere. I smell mostly licorice, lavender, coffee, and anise. Nothing like this. Lovely, lovely.

I remember the word of mouth when this came out and it deserved every accolade it got. Yohji Homme embodies what L'Eau d'Issey strove for. This is the epitome of Far Eastern perfumery sensibilities: noticeable only at arm's length, smells natural (..ish), radiates while fading away, amicable to re-application. I find it hard to categorize, so I call it an aquatic oriental. There's some gourmand in there, but definitely oriental. Since I'm almost running out, I find Lauder's Intuition a nice substitute because Yohji's prices are just ridiculous. Another option is Guerlain Homme -- its dry down is simply and unmistakably similar to Yohji. Oh, and one more thing...Yohji's longevity is immensely improved if layered with the glycerin-laden aftershave...which brings me to another point...the aftershave has top notes of syrupy yuzu, Why a different top note? I dunno, but it dries down to similar heart notes of the EDT...makes sense? I think on some level it does...or you can just spare yourself the agony and get your own glycerin.

i just got a 100ml vintage bottle. It was a blind buy. well, i didn’t expect it to smell like this. initial sniff was very nice, but definitely my most sweet/powdery scent. performance wise i expected more to be honest. i was thinking, maybe it lost some power due to shelving all these years. can anybody confirm that? or is it really this thin? for example: i can’t really make out any leather in this. however... i think i’ll give Yohji Homme some more wearings. i could imagine i’m gonna like it soon...

Yohji Homme is a very unique spicy and sensual sweet fragrance. It push the boundaries of classifications. The hits of lavander, cedar, cinnamon, anis, brazilian rosewood and rum combination is so yummy and all in perfect harmony. Sillage and longevity are both excellent, but Yohji Homme is never invasive, it hugs you and stay with you for many hours...This easily could be a unisex perfume....I love it !

Yohji Homme opens fresher than I’d imagined, kind of citrusy. It feels like a big blue sky. I really get the sage-lavender combo, a sort of fuzzy herbal landscape feeling. A prairie, all sagebrush and big sky. A few minutes in, I get darker notes, a slightly sweetened rum-coffee note with a licorice aftertaste. Still surrounded by airy herbs and rushing wind.

The vintage Jean Patou bottle is a beautiful chocolate rum fragrance. The ingredients, especially licorice + coffee create a delicious dark chocolate with a slightly boozy background. This fragrance smells mature even if it's dry sweet. Very intimate with a very limited projection. Even though a great fragrance.

There is an ingredient in some perfumes that smells like mud. This one has it. And it's not just a reaction on my skin. I can smell the muddy scent right out of the bottle.

بررسی من براساس نسخه اصلی این کار (سال 1999) هست، هرچند فهمیدم که نسخه اخیر هم کاملاً مشابه اصلیه (اوه آرزو داشتم بقیه خانه های عطرسازی هم اینطور عمل می کردن) یوجی اوم یکی از اون دو یا سه عطر هوشمندانه ی عطرسازی معاصره (منظور دهه ۲۰۰۰ به بعد) که سزاوار همه معروفیت و ستایش هایی که ازش میشه هست. بی تردید یک شاهکار کهنه نشدنی و منحصر به فرده که همه در این مورد اتفاق نظر دارن. اگه شما کتاب راهنمای عطر تورین رو بخونید، بررسی او از عطر یوجی اوم بی نقصه. مثل تعداد خیلی کمی از عطرهای معاصر دیگه (فکرم به سمت ام 7، دو تا از کارهای کاستوم نشنال، و کویرون میره)، اساساً شبیه هیچ کار دیگه ای نیست: تمیز، سفید، دارای یه ریزه کاری مصنوعی خیلی مدرن. یوجی اساساً یه عطر چوبی ـ ادویه ای پیچیده ست، با یک بافت شفاف، صاف اما گرم و چگال از روایح خوشطعم، کمی خامه ای و پودری، همچنین به همراه چیزی گلدار (که واسم بویی شبیه به زنبق داره، سوا از نت لاوندر) که به شکلی شیک با یک پس زمینه ی ظریف مشروبی و تاریک از شیرین بیان در کنتراست هست. مهم تر از همه این ها اینه که نت های انتزاعی مخملی و آلویی فرِش، ناب، یکم عجیب و بشدت جالب، یه نوع "تابش سفید" قوی و ملایم در سراسر عطر ایجاد می کنن. آنچه باعث میشه یوجی یه شاهکار باشه، علاوه بر بوی خیلی فوق العاده اش، بی کم و کاستیِ باورنکردنیِ این ترکیبه: یه عطر پیچیده ست با کلی انعکاس، نت، و ریزه کاری از روایح ادویه ای گرفته تا روایح شیرین، و کلی چیز های جدید و هرگز-قبلاً-شنیده-نشده که در سراسر عطر جریان داره. اما هنوز خیلی با ظرافت، متراکم، لطیف و شفاف، و تقریبا "ذن"(اشاره به مکاتب بودایی) و به نوعی مسالمت آمیز است. این مثل همون موج نوی خوراک های آزمایشگاهی با اون سر آشپزهای شیمیدانه که دستورالعملهای آشپزی و بسیاری از طعم های پیچیده رو توی قرص های کوچیک جا میدن. اما جدا از همه این ها، گفتن این کافیه که رایحه یوجی واقعا مجلل، اعتیاد آور، مجذوب کننده، و مثل تعداد انگشت شماری از عطرهای دیگه خاص و منحصر بفرد هست.

Yohji Yamamoto's Yohji Homme, the hard to find everywhere in the globe except Singapore. This is woody spicy (cinnamon, anise & coriander) with right sweetness (licorice) and booze (rum). Very light creaminess from sandalwood & almost undetected lavender. Yohji homme can be a signature scent as it isn't a beast in sillage. A versatile perfume that is great especially during spring and fall. Cuddling moments? Yes it fits. This is also perfect on casual dates, dinner, parties and movies its kinda a quiet one, maybe it will ignite more if I perspire a bit. Well the big surprise is, to my skin, the mix of spice and woods projected a coffee note that ain't sweet. It's so wonderful, loving its balmy feel and so comforting. There are few perfumes that reminded me of this fragrance. Just some vibes. It is just how Yohji H. works on my skin, doesn't mean an over all similar scent to the following perfumes. David Beckham Intimately Yours, Gucci Gucci I pour homme and Mont Blanc Exceptionnel. Yohji Homme is a wonderful addition to my perfume collection. It's beauty is remarkable although quiet and very close to skin. If this aint long lasting? But with a bittersweet coffee impression, my nose will constantly be lured by this fragrance. A must own if you find a cheaper deal.

I have a sample of the original formula - there's actually a lot of lavender, coriander, and anise in the top notes of this fragrance! Yohji seems unique in that it move in "waves." The top is brisk and strong. Then it quiets down quickly as the coriander and carnation spice their way through (it's a mild peppery-floral accord), and by thirty minutes into wear I'm getting star anise and doughy coumarin, dusted with cinnamon and some leftover anise for residual freshness. There's a rummy vibe in the base, mingling with a roasted coffee bean note. This is a far more satisfying coffee note than the one in A*Men, surprisingly. Interesting fougere indeed. Worth the hype? Well, you know what? Yes. Not the strongest fragrance in the world, that's for sure, but the deftness of the balance and lucidity of the notes is remarkable. Few fragrances are crafted with this level of subtlety and intricate nuance, which is kind of sad, now that I think about it.

"Yohji Homme" is indeed a light and beautiful scent that shares its similarities with other gourmand fragrances, like "Rochas Man" and "Au Masculin" by Lolita Lempicka. Actually, I think it's Lolita's older brother. On my skin, "Yohji Homme" opens and remains most of the time with the same notes: a light combination of anise, rum, and licorice, with just a drop of coffee surrounded by cinnamon. It's a very intimate fragrance, most suitable for dates or office wear, though there're many other options easier to be found for the latter. As I've already said, it's light so don't expect something like "Au Masculin" or "A*Men", which are really strong scents, but you'll surely feel its presence around you for some time. It's really a shame that such interesting fragrance has left this world of boring and "been there done that" scents.

Many things have been said about Yohji Homme including, obviously, that's basically a fougere with smooth boozy-gourmandic facets. Lavender prominent with spicy elements, woody and bittersweet but, most of all, with an incredible balance and an overall classicism inherent to it. It's able to smell modern and traditional at the same time. Casual and elegant, sophisticated and easy to like. I'd dare saying this represents perfection in an unambitious and unpretentious genre mainly targeted to younger crowds. I'm generally not a fan of these type of compositions but Yohji, especially when compared to other fragrances playing similar themes, destroys boundaries and elevates itself to the *classic* status. Rating: 8/10

After a lot of hesitation I bought a bottle of vintage Yohji Homme. Let me start with the negative part of my review: the sillage and longevity are below average. You'll get a few hours, max. The positive: Yohji has character and charisma. It's certainly masculine. Complex, not too sweet. It has an Arabian vibe to it. Not offensive. The drydown has some of the drydown of Escada Homme (I think some similar chemicals have been used). I would like to try the 2013 version to compare! 8/10 Edit: Maybe I'll lower my grade a bit. I don't regret buying it but I never feel the urge to wear it. Sometimes I find it a bit dull and it reminds me of detergents. Will try to give this a few more chances.

Ha Ha ... I was searching for a good cologne just for intimate, I bought it but I think maybe I had much better choices! This is very sweet, warm and leathery! Nice but not such a groundbreaking stuff. I don’t go for it again, mostly because I don’t like that pipe-shaped and tall flacon! Longevity and sillage are about average, as I remember! سالها پیش وقتی داشتم دنبال یه ادکلن واسه قرارهای عاشقونه میگشتم، به این برخوردم. اما حالا فکر می کنم که واقعاً انتخاب های خیلی بهتری هم داشتم بوی شیرین و چرم گونه ای داره و کلاً خوشبوست ولی چیز خارق العاده ای نیست من که دیگه دوباره نمی خرمش، بیشتر بخاطر اینکه از شیشه لوله مانندش خوشم نمیاد ماندگاری و پخش بوی متوسطی داره البته تا جایی که یادم میاد

I still have about 10ml left in my original bottle I got from my first boss for Christmas one year. It still smells gorgeous and I keep it mostly for nostalgia and good memories of being young and carefree in late 90's NYC before timelines shifted into a thousand shards. The opening is like a walk through a citrus sage brush but within minutes you start to get the real magic and mystery of the deeper notes that blend incredibly well into a soft but masculine fougere, and later an intoxicating and very sexy skin scent.

This is a blast from the past. I once bought this on a trip to London in Liberty's 2001. I remember it was very different and unique compared to others I owned around that time. The anise and woods were very striking and strong. I would love to own this again, but I can't find it anywhere. The prices on eBay are ridiculous.

When I bought this cologne shortly after it was released, I could not compare it to anything I had previously worn. This is not your garden variety cologne, it stands out. Think coffee and leather, the aroma of very good coffee mingling with the smell of rich leather upholstery, classy and warm, great evening fragrance.

The Gentlemen and Ladies, fans Yohji Yamamoto! In letoile (Russia) finally-that appeared the declared republications classical scent Yohji Yamamoto , including under discussionned. On wholly democratic prices you will be able to gain the loved aromas Yohji although and mildly (but can and no) changed!

I think it's overrated. It's like a roll in the hay (literally) with a bar of gingerbread soap. The licorice note appears--as it always does--but not in a way that elevates this scent overall. Warm, but it doesn't pulsate. I think licorice is done far better in both Lolita Lempicka and Casual Friday.

Yohji Homme starts out with a citrus blast accompanied by a coffee smell that fades out real fast. Trough time, as the fragrance goes on, the rum appears mixed with the star anise, giving a particular sweet smell. Overall a good light scent that stays on the skin for actually a long time.

I really want to smell this, as Luca Turin seems to believe basically every other fragrance in the world copied it (at least thats the impression i get from his massively over rated book. I also get the impression he and Tania Sanchez are arrogant tosspots)

Well i have not tried this fragrance neither planning to sniff it anytime soon, but boy what an amazing Photograph.. Easily can be hanged with undeniable pride on the wall of any modern art museum.. Flawless art direction for the 90's!

Very nice scent but the white musk they use has a piercing quality that becomes incredibly irritating to me within half an hour or so, and led to me swapping off my bottle. If you have the same issue, try "vintage" Rochas Homme.

A well constructed fragrance that wears close to skin. Very elegant, gourmand, the chocolatey aroma lingers for hours, one of my most complemented scent

This is definitely a cologne to wear for intimate, special occasions. It has a sweet smell, very sensual... Particularly I love the smell of cinammon.

In ref. to honeydays, it's probably the tonka bean. It can do that for some people.
