“Dawn. Already. Red strokes paint the horizon, and the light makes its way through the villa window. He is up early today, as there’s much to do before tonight’s ceremony at the Game Palace. One last time, he’s going over the invitation, making sure he didn’t miss any details. When finished, he tosses the letter into the fire. Ah, the smell of burning paper. How he loves that smell. Now, back to work. The still life arrangement is waiting to be immortalized on the canvas. He prepared it ahead of time, opting for an Autumnal decorum - some fruits, herbs, and flowers. Taking another sip of his Moscato red wine and thinking, “This should do,” he proceeds to place the cup half full next to the other items. He starts mixing his colors while measuring the canvas. The light is now burning the room, setting everything on fire. The smell of burning paper is still vivid, the light is perfect, and the canvas is waiting for his stroke. And the dance begins...” Dawn feels like a warmer counterpart to the more esoteric and stern Night. While it took me some time to understand and appreciate the latter, I immediately fell in love with the former. To me, it smells like early Autumn days, when temperatures are still generous. The colors that come to mind are those of turning leaves- golden, maple red, and brown. The perfume is very dry and warm, whereas Night is more resinous and cool. There is a prominent smoke accord that feels ever-present, and to me, smells like combusting paper. I was one of those weird kids who enjoyed setting paper on fire, only to savor the fragrance. The smoke accord here reminds me of that scent, without the acrid nuances, only the warmth and the subtle vanillic sweetness that comes from the volatile compounds such as Lignin. There are herbaceous qualities, dried fruits, a soft red wine accord, dry tobacco, and dry woods (perhaps oak). Nothing jumps out, apart from the smoke accord that lies like a veil over the rest of the composition. The strokes are delicate, and depending on the viewer, one might perceive slightly different facets. The dryness makes me picture a still life arrangement lit by the red bursts of light at the coming Dawn. The blaze almost breathes life into the lifeless flowers and fruits, warming and allowing them to charm us one last time with their formerly profuse fragrance. IG:@memory.of.scents
