Baby Doll

I'm so shocked to see people describing this scent as sweet, and I'm certainly shocked to see rose listed as the most noticeable note here because, on me, this is a fresh, juicy, citrussy fragance. I must say, I LOVE this one and I never get tired of it. It's fresh and juicy and, at the same time, it feels elegant (it's YSL after all, isn't it?). This really smells like grapefruit to me, combined with other juicy notes, and I think they got the notes wrong in this website, the official YSL website describes it as: "Flirty, fun, forever young... a happy-go-lucky fragrance that lives in the moment. Like a top spinning, the opening accord amuses with newly ripened grapefruit, then teases with witty turns of wild rose and spicy red currant. The base notes that follow--cedar, grenadine and new peach--linger momentarily, only to whirl anew. In a faceted crystal flacon reminiscent of a spinning top." And that makes a lot more sense than the Fragantica description. There's definitely grapefruit in this one, and there's nothing sweet about it (no tonka, vanilla, etc.). It's light and fun but it lasts a pretty long time and it projects well. I also believe this is not the most popular YSL scent, so most people like this, but when I tell them what it is, they have never heard of it, which to me is great: it's a really original scent! By the way, this starts as a pink liquid and it becomes almost transparent after a while, so don't be surprised if it changes color. And you can also find it quite cheap because of its low popularity. Have fun with this one! I LOVE it!

I found a YSL Baby Doll 100ml bottle perfume in a box put away in storage (in 2009/2010 when I put away baby items with some other memorabilia). There’s a little over 50ml left. I’ve totally forgotten I had it. I’ve been dreaming to get my hands on a bottle of Baby Doll for years! It is just as good as I remember, probably even better now that I could refresh my palate of the specific scent. The colors have all faded but the amazing scent is there! It does have the grapefruit scent many have mentioned. The grapefruit pulp scent to be exact. Bitter, fruity (not sweet nor fresh) and freshly peeled. When I saw rose in the list, I thought no way would I ever have liked perfume with rose in it. But it’s a very fresh and delicate rose, a very light pink. When you smash the petals and they break, and give off a delicate aroma of the juices in the petals. And to my surprise I like it very, very much. The specific aroma of the rose is what took me back 20 years when I sniffed the perfume. I think this is the perfume where my love for black currant began and it also has lily of the valley which is my all time fav component in a fragrance. I remember when I saw it on the perfume shelves of a luxury store in 1999, my mom was looking for a perfume for herself (I remember it was JPG Fragile, “the glamorous snowball” scent). And in 2002, when I had my first adult money, I bought YSL Baby Doll for myself.

I love this perfume! There is no pink grapefruit listed in the notes but I get a very realistically pink grapefruit note, Rose and maybe some sweet pineapple. I never know what they are doing with this - one minute it’s discontinued then it’s back then gone again... I wish they would just consistently keep it in stock! It’s my favourite YSL scent after Premieres Roses (Ali’s difficult to find). It’s a simple but very happy, energizing and pretty scent. I find that the pink grapefruit note keeps is quite bright and lovely for the summer. Sillage is quite good (not monstrous) but better than I might expect from a pretty bright citrus rose. I think that it may get passed over because the concept may not appeal to everyone but that’s unfortunate because I think it really is a beautiful and somewhat unique fragrance. It was my signature fragrance for about a year in my early 20s but I still love wearing it. I have a tiny little bit left and I’ve been using it up a bit liberally this summer so i should probably slow down. : )

Baby Doll is not my favorite perfume. I only ever had this one bottle because I knew that its days were numbered and it was too good to just let it pass. Once I had this strange conversation with a friend about gourmand perfumes and is there a way to do them right. Can they be interesting, complex, elegant, dignified even? Along with fun and addictive? We came to agrement that Baby Doll is all that. It's also one made rather early, when gourmands were not a norm, but a rare phenomenon. Then is it really a gourmand? It's not that sweet. Since it made us both salivate, we agreed that it was. On the other occasion I used it as a easy exemple of sparkling or fizzy, effervescent even in perfumes. Quality or texture not that common. Although, it's not my favorite, I believe that it was technicaly too good to discontinue. I know that In Love Again is not that different, and it's the closest potential replacement, but it laks sparkle. Then, even In Love Again is getting harder and harder to find.

I wore this the year it was launched and loved it. I noticed then immediately how it reminds me of "InLoveAgain" by the same house! I remember when I pressed the "this perfume reminds me of" button here, long time ago when no one here noticed that similarity, I was the first. Anyway, I were ignoring "BabyDoll" almost 2 decades!! I repressed its love in my soul and took it for granted, thinking I will purchase it one day. Yesterday I were visiting this page and were horrified to know it is discontinued, I immediately visited their official website and OMG it wasn't on the perfume list there, it means it is officially stopped from manufacturing! Long story short; I wend today and purchased 4 bottles from a local shop, 2 of the 50ml and 2 of the100ml, I'm really doing myself a favor, to not feel guilty afterwards.... I learned my lessons well. PS: the lady in YSL counter didn't know about this tragedy and said: "no body told me that!"
