Cuir (2023)

Cuir opens with an absolutely beautiful OUD assafi note. If you didn't know; Oud Assafi is a premium-grade, brand name oud oil produced by fragrance ingredient house - Firmenich. It’s considered one of the purest, most refined oud oils available commercially and is often referred to as the “most precious natural oud in the world” by the brand. Its very smooth and slightly barnyardy. Think OMBRE NOMADE. Its very prominent in Cuir for about 30mins. As it dries down the oud naturally fades away a that soft supple leather comes forward. Its the same type leather that's in Tom Ford's Ombre Leather Parfum. Its like an expensive pair of high end leather gloves. But the oud assafi gives it a little "breath". Like someone took these expensive gloves and shovelled snow for 10 mins. And you smell the inside on the glove. The leather is warmed up a bit. Its breathes. Fantastic. With the leather comes the Violet leaf. I adore Violet leaf. Since 1988 and Fahrenheit I consider it to be a quintessential masculine note. For me the combination of leather and Violet leaf is as manly as it gets. Smooth, sophisticated - yet ready to rumble. A woman could wear this. Its very sophisticated and smooth. Although I've compared it to Fahrenheit - it really doesn't smell like Fahrenheit at all. They share notes but its a different type of frag. Also this Smells NOTHING like Oud Wood! In summary, if you like the oud in Ombre NOMADE and like the leather Ombre Leather Parfum and like the violet leaf in Fahrenheit, you will love this. Its a strong 11/10 for me. Performance wise - projection is similar to Ombre Leather Parfum. Which is like 7.5/10. Very noticeable for 4-5hrs. On skin, it lasts about 8hrs. On clothes - IT IS NUCLEAR! 20hrs plus on clothes.

Quite a surprisingly love from me, all things considered. It opens up with a potent Leather and an a Strong Booziness with some spice added in too, it then settles down into a Leather-Oud, with some overarcing Violet, and some warm spices in the back, I could also be getting a very subtle tea note as well, but it's hard to tell. Overall the smell I'd say is like 60% leather with a hint of Violet, 25% Oud, and 15% spices on my skin, the Oud is very understated and definitely isn't animalic, it's a western nose appealing Oud for sure, that being said, despite its potency I quite like the Leather accord in this fragrance it smells refined, bold and is given a little charm by whatever warm spices are beneath. Onto wearability, this on my skin is absolutely monstrous, it feels like it's projecting strongly but it goes even beyond that 😂, after applying this on my hand and getting home it filled my while house with the scent after not even 2 minutes had passed, which is sad for me as I don't like strong projecting fragrances usually, but I still like it, in terms of longevity I got around 12 hours. This us a cold weather ONLY scent, I genuinely think you'd make someone pass out if they walked past you in the summer whilst wearing this, definitely not an indoors fragrance at all for me, To me it definitely leans masculine but a woman could pull it off for sure. Overall it's definitely what I expected from a Leather (Cuir = Leather in French) fragrance, with a stupidly strong amount of projection, simplistic yet a piece of art is how I'd describe this. Its getting an 8.4/10

Got this one through a blind trade with a dude online.. and im not disappointed. Smells like purple suede. Except I feel purple suede is a bit fresher and airy and cuir is a bit more robust, still fresh just seems a little deeper. Almost like if you chew spearmint gum you get this fresh minty feel from this fragrance mixed with some animalic undertones and a touch of leather, and not couch leather. I dont think this is offensive at all. If youre a confident masculine more mature man this eill go over extremely well on special occasions, dates, black tie events. It lasts awhile but I dont feel it is room filling. Maybe on clothes it can be and ive only tested on skin. If you like mature scents and can get your hand on this for a good price id say go for it.. dont pay retail. If you cant find it go for purple suede until then. Great smell though ill be wearing this a ton.

This is extremely elegant and mature. You need to be prepared to wear this fragrance: Black suit with white shirt and black shiny shoes, or black tuxedo. For a very formal moment like a wedding where you have a major role on it (not for the groom), or a very important business dinner. I'm not a biker, but probably with that outfit too, but it could seem redundant. Very masculine. Strong, long lasting, almost eternal. Not a versatile perfume. For men of 35+ old, serious and with lot of self confidence. You are making a status and authority statement with this. Not for compliment seekers, dates, parties or clubbing. Not for kids or clowns either.

I got a special printed bottle with a Dubai print and it’s so nice. The smell is literally leather and nothing else. I noticed that in hot days the violet is stronger in my skin but the silage still leathery, may be hard to wear in a day to day life but when you get the chance for sure everyone will notice it. The duration is really really strong even after a bath I have a light leathery smell and if you spray it in a jacket it will be there forever. Definitely worth the price, still expensive tho

Most new “oud” launches only wink at the note, Creed’s Oud Zarian included, but here it feels full and authentic. The oud is deep and full-bodied, wrapped in supple leather and lifted by violet. Spice and woods add warmth, and it wears masculine without being overbearing. Autumn, winter, and early spring bring out its best. It wasn’t instant love, but it grew on me with every wear, and now the oud has that same tannic, mouth-filling depth you get from a bold black tea. Solid 10/10.

Super solid slightly animalic cowhide i wouldn’t even get close to making a dent in a bottle of this stuff you only need 1-2 sprays too maybe if I didn’t own an Ombré Leather that I love just as much but never wear I know this will be the same for me, probably top 3 leather scents atm for me

when i wear it I always like always get compliments, i feel it's super sexy to wear as a woman, the scent is also super overpowering so if you want something discreet just don't go for that one. I have used like 3 bottles already i really like it

It’s absolutely not green or aquatic at all not in this side.. all I can catch is a very smoky leather perfume with a touch of oud ... that’s it ..

Ultimate beast mode, i love it

Cuir, part of the Le Vestiaire des Parfums by Yves Saint Laurent collection, is exactly what the name suggests: leather. The review could almost end there. From the first spray, the scent unfolds like opening the door to a boutique filled with expensive leather goods — handbags, gloves, coats — that rich, slightly raw smell of finely treated hide. Spend a little more time with it, though, and the fragrance reveals more texture. The leather leans slightly animalic yet never becomes dirty or overwhelming. A crisp violet leaf note cuts through the heaviness, adding a cool, ozonic edge that keeps everything feeling sharp and refined. The scent also has green facets and a faint chemical, gasoline-like nuance humming underneath. This subtle petrol-like undertone inevitably brings to mind Fahrenheit by Dior, though here the leather takes center stage and the floral side stays quiet. At moments it also evokes Portrayal Man by Amouage, but denser, darker, and more straightforward, with a much stronger focus on leather than airy aromatics. It leans masculine, but a confident, independent woman could absolutely pull it off. Performance is excellent: easily 12+ hours on skin, and on clothes it can linger for days — sometimes even weeks. Definitely not blind-buy safe unless you’re a true leather enthusiast.

Since smelling vintage Balmain Jolie Madame, I am partial to a well-composed leather-violet scent. I was excited to try Cuir, YSL's effort, and while it is pleasant and good-quality, it is more leather than violet. In fact, it is essentially a straight-up leather scent, living up to its name. Cuir consists of a smooth, dry, animalic leather accord that shifts as the scent develops. It is smooth from initial spray, at its most animalic at the opening, becoming progressively more dry as it develops. The violet emerges early on, adding a predictably beautiful counterpoint to the leather - violet and leather marry extremely well. It is subtle however, fading from view early on. It becomes dry and slightly smoky as it dries down, with a woody undertone. Sillage is moderate and longevity is long-lasting. It is best worn in autumn/winter. Perfectly unisex, it is a good-quality leather scent, but look elsewhere for a successor to Jolie Madame. 3.5/5.

It's a strong leather fragrance with smoky and green notes underneath, Not your typical leather scent, I have many leather fragrances and it doesn't smell similar to any of them, It's like a new creation. I imagine a guy in his 40's who wears a leather jacket and rides his harley davidson bike, why? Because it's a mature scent yet it's bold with a statement. Not a safe blind buy, You have to sample it first. Performance is really good, 8 hours minimum.

This is a really nice fragrance. Although not very original it manages to recreate an older formula in a more wearable fashion. It is like a combo of Dior’s Fahrenheit and Amouage’s Portrayal Men. Very soft suede leather in comparison to Fahrenheit thick leather. It is an easy wear for someone who likes Leather but does not want something challenging. The whole YSL private line is a mess. This would be the only exception worth sampling.

Such a beautiful, deep, slightly more masculine leaning scent. This comes from someone who doesn’t like violet notes! It opens up smokey and leathery but settles to a creamy violet-oud. If it was the other way around I would have ranked it even higher in my personal list. I will still choose something like Caban and Tuxedo over it but this scent is beautiful for someone who loves smokey violets.

The epitome of a leather fragrance. Super strong. Simultaneously raunchy and classy.

You take encelade, purple oud and leather oud from dior and put them in a ysl bottle the result is ysl cuir starts with a large dose of rhubarb with refined leather at no time I detected the leaf of the violet after twenty minutes the note of spicy Oud (from saffron) begins to appear very good smell identical to purple oud and then three hours after the scent turns into leather oud animal the civet is the star of this scent it's weird that it's not listed it really dries into leather oud from dior so if you like that type of scent profile you wouldn't be not on it, tested on my forearm in the middle of a heat wave the longevity is very good more than 12 hours Sillage and projection remains at do in the day to come

Testing blind from a sample thrown in the bag when I purchased something else, this opened up smokey to me with what I thought would be a obvious vetiver centered fragrance. The woodsy element though turns more leathery with a funkiness (you might like or hate) making it a bit more complex and layered. Looking at the notes now, that funkiness comes from the blend 9f the powdery elements of the violet leaf, and agree it gives off a sense of animalistic elements, but it is slight. The main take away is a leathery (more fashion goods than raw leather) with an animalistic and hint of smokiness (to me). Longevity is good so depending on your fondness for the scent itself is ok to good on price.

The opening of this fragrance is the best thing about it: it opens with a slightly animalic leather accord along with a dark oud! So dark and mysterious! Unfortunately the violet leaf kicks in and overtakes the whole show pretty soon, and stays on the center of the stage alone for the rest of the journey of the fragrance giving off that ultra ozonic profile. They should have put the violet leaf in the top and the leather & oud in the base, not vice versa, especially since it's called Cuir! A video review is also available on my YT ▶️

Opening is a little herbal I guess that’s the violet leaf and citronella? Citrus? Bergamot? Green mandarin? I don’t know which of these citruses it is, but there’s definitely citrus all the way throughout this fragrance, very, very leathery right down the line. For the heart I’m getting clove. And leather and the citrus. For a good portion of the dry down But what I keep thinking is this just smells like bug spray sprayed into my best leather handbag Oud and citronella or citrus or whatever it is in here that smells like lemons combine to make something very unpleasant. It’s pickle juice bug spray. In the very last phase of this, I’m still getting very slightly Pickle. But mostly leather and clove. if that last part of the dry down was missing that pickle part, this would be just right, but this is no cigar for me.

This is quite potent stuff. I have a 2ml sample vial, but you really need only one spray to give it a proper run. So I've given it a few. High quality, but as the notes indicate, very straightforward. Leather, and some violet in the back. Now there are a lot of leather variants out there but I don't like this one. To me it has a faint smell of urine.

A potent, smoked tannery leather with a watery and ozonic green violet. Find it to be an odd mix that just doesn’t work for me. There’s a sharp, industrial, chemical vibe similar to Dior’s Purple Oud that I just can’t get past. Feels overly synthetic and harsh

Smelled it on a coworker, very leathery and slight animalic and tons of smoke. Sillage is very nuclear. Not for me tho as I find it very crude and simplistic.

love the leather opening for the first 30 seconds, then dislike the animalistic drydown. i ordered Cuir Sublime Oud but they sent the 2023 Cuir

It opens with a rough, fresh-edged leather, but later, especially on fabric, it turns into the smell of damp, moldy decay.

Leather accords are such a hit or miss for me. Some of them I love, some other ones I absolutely cannot stand. This sadly falls into the latter category. It's hard to believe that YSL decided to discontinue some of the other Vestiaire fragrances and chose to put this out instead. Babycat and Grain de Poudre have in my opinion much much better leather/suede notes and overall much more complexity. I cannot imagine wearing Cuir, but I'm sure it will find some fans.

Straightup, Cuir YSL is a smoke bomb! For a while now after exploring Tuxedo to the point of boredom, I've been dilly dallying about which one from the Le Vestiaire des Parfums collection to go for. I finally settled with Cuir as the next best thing although I've got my eye on a couple more from that line-up. Cuir YSL is leathery but in a refined smoky way. The leather tempers down a bit in the dry down but smokiness and musky undertone stay on. Sometimes when I over-sniff it, I get the sensation of a sore throat which I think is from the dense smokiness. Still, I take no point away from this beauty. While it doesn't smell like Amouage Myth Man, it sure reminds me of the beautiful smokiness in MM. Cuir stays on you for ever, both on clothing and on skin. It performs better on my skin though lasting the ENTIRE DAY and by entire day I don't just mean 9-5! Really, a couple of sprays is enough otherwise it may be too much. This one is a love for me as it does well in the opening and then goes on to shine even further in the dry down. I love fragrances that linger in the air and Cuir YSL is one of them. It is unapologetically bold and daring while being gorgeous but I appreciate that it may not be for everyone for the same reason, so probably best trying before you buy. But for me, it's a keeper all the way 10/10

Refined, Animalic Leather I finally got to test Cuir (2023), and it’s exactly what the name suggests: straightforward leather. It leans towards that slightly animalic type of leather, but this version is wearable. On my skin, I noticed a bit of a sour edge to it. Interestingly, I compared this to another YSL exclusive fragrance I tried, Grain de Poudre, which had suede and ozonic elements. I felt some similarities in the way the leather and those airy, ozonic accords were treated in the backbone of both scents. I think YSL is trying to establish a signature leather accord across this exclusive line—which is really smart perfumery, in my opinion! If you like leather that is both animalic and refined, this is one of the best executions. 6.5/10 (A refined leather for fans of the style.)

This presents also some clean soapy whiffs and develops nicely on the skin, at first raw and animalic and more well behaved and clean as it progresses. I have to mention the scent is invading everything around it. The closet where I keep my sample now literally all smells like leather. I never got that with any perfume. Well worth the money simply for the stunning performance and the overall nice quality of the scent. Just bare in mind however that it us after all just a simple well crafter leather fragrance that could do well layered wisely.

I like it. It opens with a really smooth leather, backed up by a crisp, slightly sweet edge from the violet leaf. As it dries down, the leather takes a step back and the violet leaf starts to come through a lot more. It’s definitely a bold fragrance, but not so bold that it feels like it’s wearing me. It’s not mass appealing but it smells great. it’s quite a unique scent that people seem to gravitate towards. I’ve put it away until winter where I think it will truly shine.

The farenheit combo(le parfum and edt) gets you there 60-75 percent. While the edt is a bit flat, the le parfum is way sweeter boozy. This is a nice middle ground, the leather/oud feels more oily, the violet less watery than the edt. Unless you are a collector or like the little differences, all three may not be needed. I would sure get me one of this, wish a 75ml was available for cheaper

I just wonder why Yves SL produced 3 editions of CUIR the first one is the original in 2014 then 2023 and now a new version in 2025, what is this?? We can understand the previous edition 23 after about 8 years of the original but after 2 years a new edition!! It's really a farce and a mess from a prestigious house like Yves 🤔😔

Straight up leather in your face, surrounded by smokiness, and to my nose it’s definitely a little peppery. This is something that you have to love to wear in my opinion and you have to be wearing it for yourself. This is a little tough to pull off and I’m just not a fan of it.

I got a sample over a year ago, maybe 2 but when I tried it then it was quite sweet but now I've circled back to it and I don't get sweet at all its pretty smokey and leathery. WTF 🤷♂️

Cuir (''Leather" in French) lives up to it's name. It smells 100% of leather. I hate leather fragrances, therefore, this one is a huge no for me.

One word, Fantastic you can't find any smell close to this or similar, this is a new creation, thank YSL for this gift.

This is Santal 33 + Leather + diesel(violet) notes.. overall a pretty good one profile wise
