Jazz Prestige

***** Amongst those collectors for whom the pursuit of now obsolete olfactory treasures remains a constant source of fascination and nay, dare I say, obsession, then the discovery of a boxed, full bottle of YSL’s, ‘Jazz Prestige’, would be similar to a back-street car-boot-fare scenario in which Steve Buscemi’s, ‘Seymour’, discovers a pristine copy of an early, vinyl, John Coltrane album released on the original Prestige record label. Indeed, just as in Terry Zwigoff’s remarkable, Ghost World (2001), we would see ‘Seymour’ admire the album’s sleeve and 50s artwork: feel the weight of the vinyl as it slides from out of its inner sleeve: watch his thorough inspection of the disc for scratches, faults etc, and ultimately his playing this disc on his old hi-fi equipment to preserve the sound of the day, marvelling at the ‘live’ feel of early Coltrane’s ‘sheets of sound’ captured on an analogue –not digital – recording: Buscemi’s trademark over-crowded teeth breaking in to characteristic easy, yet friendly grin - left foot tapping in time to the beat of Art Taylor’s driving drumming. Such is the masterpiece of ‘Jazz Prestige’: a bottle of now discontinued hard-bop perfume delight that, like the youthful Coltrane’s tenor solos, goes on-and-on: twisting and turning as the (unknown) nose throws everything in to this creation, yet manages to ‘pull it off’ with an unfolding series of outcomes that constantly engage and inspire the wearer. So, as if in the film Seymour had also been in to vintage perfumes, I ask you to imagine Buscemi’s unmistakable laconic tone giving enthusiastic, erudite commentary to the quietly quizzical, ‘Enid’, (Thora Birch), having judiciously sprayed ‘Jazz Prestige’ on to each others’ wrists. I shall leave you to imagine the rest.... ‘You see...it is at once citrus bright; aromatic green, and kinda deeply floral, with a heavy ylang-ylang head note to me.....but don’t be fooled by the box: this is really a unisex despite the 90s bullshit marketing label. Yeah... here we go...this baby is backed by a depth of pepper and spices: an ‘Oriental’. Here...check this out...yeah! Great! You get the apples, okay...but wait now for the chypre notes...these were really cool in the late-50s/60s with a guy called Chant...but here’s the thing...this is no chypre either...cool...you dig the ‘leather’. Yeah that’s genius...really....but you wait a few hours and tell me how this smells then. The oriental shifts to chypre and then to a true fougere...the tonka bean-plus oakmoss thing...yeah, that’s right, the Paco Rabanne fern vibe. Only this is a 1000 times better! In fact, this is one of the best fougere chords there’s ever been, though most people out there just don’t know it, they just stick to Paco and Drakkar. No go on...take it, friend: it’s for you!’

I really miss this fragrance, a flanker of the awesome Jazz.. Jazz was my signature scent and have been using on and off since my teenager days. What will make me extremely happy is to be able to get Jazz Prestige again. I remember it to be even stronger and with better longevity than the normal Jazz. I could go out clubbing and after dancing the whole night, still be smell it on myself after showering the next morning. Amazing creation. I wish YSL can bring this back but since L'Oreal took over around 2008, things have been going downhill so it is very unlikely that the world will get to smell this masterpiece again. 10/10 UPDATE: 16 February 2021. I was able to secure in total 10x 50 ml sealed bottles from a seller on eBay in the USA. My personal stock levels of my original signature fragrance is now sorted for a VERY long time. LOL. All are from a September 1996 batch and they arrived today. It is as awesome smelling as I remember it to be. The items were obviously immaculately stored which has a big effect on how potent and good they will smell decades later. I have bought a couple of vintages recently all 13 years + in age that is either weak or the top notes smell a bit "off", all coming from countries with very high average temperatures. Prestige is much richer and more potent than the original Jazz release. The opening is almost like a blast of notes being thrown in your face and really awesome. I get the carnation, tobacco accord and some green notes not present in the original Jazz. The drydown is one the very best of all my fragrances with the prominent sandalwood. Mysore sandalwood is indeed listed as a note on the Jazz Prestige box. I have realised that chances are probably zero that Prestige would have been released again, so I am happy that I was able to track it down again after just over 20 years. As I have both Prestige and vintage Jazz (in the white & black molded plastic cover) now at the same time, I was able to do a direct comparison. I definitely prefer Prestige over the original. Although I wear fragrances primarily for myself, this gets me unsolicited compliments every time I wear it. It obviously projects very well and stays a full day on me.

I would LOVE to see this AMAZING juice make a return to the market. The sharp notes of lavender with a spicy undertones of sandalwood being supported by cypress and oakmoss giving this juice a real attractive bold aroma. There's warm floral aroma from Geranium, carnations which helps to soften the sharp spicy notes. The aroma of leather is just noticeable when it's combined with nutmeg this juice has a very attractive robust aroma . This fragrance has such complex blend of notes coming together beautifully like a symphony. Longevity and Silage is very high lasting well past 8hrs It is a real shame that this fragrance is not available anymore. :(( I'm soo happy that I found a 100ml bottle, I use it sparingly knowing that I won't be so fortunate to have another bottle. Prestige is just that...a PHENOMENAL JUICE that you won't have anything else to compareit to. Without a doubt this frag is definitely highly recommend. 10/10...this juice is UNBELIEVABLY SEXY...why wait until the summer. The heck with that!!!!!!

i like it. is different. perhaps reminds me selfish chanel platinum but so bitter! is a fragrance that goes in many directions .... we can find a thousand facets like a good wine ..... elegant, sophisticated, stylish, macho, dandy ....... a perfume to have. really suitable for many occasions. 9/10 rich!!!!!

I have a sealed 50ml Sanofi era available aswell as a full parfum corps 50ml available aswell. Corps isn't sealed but hasn't been used as i own a 30ml and a 50ml so no need for other 2

This is a masterpiece,IMHO. Have loved this for years, and still retain in my collection a larger bottle,which I treasure. The great reviews below say it all.

Pros : smells great,not offensive but strong, not cloying even in hot and humid weather, projection is good, longevity is exellent. Cons : it's dicontinued.

YSL Jazz Prestige is noticeably sharper and spicier than the original Jazz, having sampled the original only yesterday. It's certainly similar, or at least an homage, to the original released five years prior. The most substantial deviation from the original occurs during opening, during which the sharp blast of spiciness is borderline overwhelming, whereas the original remained a bit more consistent. In the dry down, though, Jazz Prestige is much closer to the original Jazz Oakmoss factors in heavily still, with a mix of some citrus, more amplified spice via cinnamon and pepper, and a similar dry down of leather, sandalwood, patchouli, and of course the oakmoss. None of the drydown elements stand out except the oakmoss--I get hints of leather and patchouli, and a generally woodiness of sandalwood or possibly cedar, but nothing striking apart from the oakmoss, now no longer used in natural form Despite the higher-rated consensus of Jazz Prestige, I slightly prefer the balance and more classic feel of the original Jazz, but only slightly. Jazz Prestige is still a fun wear, a good throwback, and a powerful masculine option. I'm not sure I'd seek this one out either but certainly this is worthy of having continued the Jazz name. Next will be Live Jazz. 7 out of 10

I can't really compare this with Jazz because I haven't smelt Jazz for years. This is quite strong, masculine, sour/green and a little medicinal to me. Found it very hard to pick out notes - they seemed to all smudge together. For the first few hours it reminded me a lot of the early stages of GBH Giorgio, but YSL JP is less sweet and less strong. I found the smell compelling rather than necessarily enjoyed it - I partly kept sniffing it to try and decide if I liked it. It develops more woodiness and herbiness and mellows a little from 3 or 4 hours in. It stays strong for hours and later develops a herbal, earthy, muskiness that verges on animalic. Projects strongly for 5 or 6 hours. At 10 hours it is still strong on skin and projects a little, and it is quite strong on skin beyond 12 hours. I personally feel this is a cooler weather scent, partly because of its strength but also it feels warm/green rather than fruity or fresh. Not bad. Nothing special. [I don't get any obvious similarity with Quorum or any significant soapiness in this, unlike Bigsly below]

If you, like me, think YSL Jazz is a nice fragrance that could have been better if the perfumer had tamed that annoying slightly medicinal accord that complements the spicy refreshing green smell, than you should try Jazz prestige. What a nice spicy green fougere! A faceted Jazz, more versatile and easy-going, although still 80s style. In my opinion, better than the original. It's a pitty It's so rare nowadays.

This is one of my fist perfume, n it keep remind me how stupid i'm. It was a gift from someone, even i love the smell soo much, i'm kinda waste it, spray on everything coz i tough it was a cheap perfume.. Years later i go to store to get 1 of this.. N just got heart attack. Its worthy, but wayy out of my reach.

smels very strong and bitter. smilar to ungaro III but strong.

Lots of notes listed but I can't detect many of them. Instead, this is a well-executed blend that has certain qualities. It is "soapy" (mostly lavender, I'd guess, along with synthetic musks used in laundry detergents), fruity (muted, light, a little lemony and minty), powdery (in a laundry detergent way, though not as synthetic or irritating as one finds in many recent fragrances), and tobacco-like. There is a very light spicy quality too, but good luck detecting much else. If you are expecting "Old School" leather, patchouli, geranium, or oak moss, I think you will be very disappointed with JP. Longevity is great and projection/"sillage" at least very good (with one spray to the chest). For comparison purposes, this smells like a "clean" version of Quorum, though without pine. The tobacco in JP is not dry/brown/leafy, but instead has a bit of a damp quality, though not earthy. UPDATE: I've now had a chance to try Jazz (the new bottle design), and you can detect a "family resemblance." However, Jazz is lighter and there is better note separation. It's "cleaner" and crisper, whereas JP is a bit muddled and dense. Clearly, Jazz is better for warmer weather whereas JP if for cooler weather.

A concentrated version of the original Jazz. The bottle I had must have been quite old. I had high expectations for the opening which, reportedly, is supposed to be fruity and fresh with pineapple and fruity notes but got none of that. I figured the top must have faded along the years as the scent skipped the opening notes and headed straight for the base. The base is warm and spicy and feels "massive". I think of the colour brown for some reason. It's got the original Jazz's leathery base flanked by sandalwood, geranium, dry lavender and oakmoss and it's amped up x 10. It really hits you and, likely, everyone around you. Whereas Chanel's Egoiste Concentree amps up the original Egoiste in a stylish and subtle manner, Jazz Prestige does so in an all-in fashion. Almost overkill. I bet this concoction would have been far more interesting with the fruity top and, possibly, with the top notes lingering in the background to lighten up the heavy base.

This is a great YSL classic. Fresh spicy is right! The ginger, anice, pepper, made fragrantly aromatic with a bouquet of floral notes, a bit of an old school soapiness with a nice coniferous nuance of Cypress. It has some sweetness and aldehydes added, all on a nice woody and balsamic base that ads richness. It is more interesting and complex than Jazz. A nice classic to visit from time to time. Rating: 8.5/10

A richer and spicy version of Jazz. The citrus-peppery opening notes are wonderful, with mint, bergamot and nutmeg. The middle with geranium and carnation dries down for a base plenty of sandalwood, leather and tobacco. The longevity and sillage is good as usual in YSL colognes. Very masculine, rich and interesting fragance, sadly discontinued, this Jazz version was one of the best YSL .

Beautiful scent. Reminds me of Chanel PE with less metal and citrus. The lavender is similar to the one in Creed Scottish Lavender. So imagine a blend of vintage PE with that creed

Where is my soap and water? I blind bought bsed on the reviews on here and this time was thoroughly disappointed. Dated dated dated.. and not in a good way.
