La Collection Pour Homme

This is a review of the current La Collection formulation which is available now to purchase. On first application I get a searing piercing lemon citrus accord that is underpinned by mint. And oh boy I was not ready for it's power, it could sear the hairs off your chest. lol You know that bracing effect when you splash freezing cold water over your face or add aftershave to your skin. Well this really awakens the senses like you have been slapped around the chops. This is followed by neroli and petagrain which tries to soften the blow but fails. The mint adds a menthol effect to the concentrated lemon citrus which you can feel on your skin and around you. Now usually most modern scents the top notes last for about ten minutes or so but this keeps going for about forty minutes before you get to the midnotes. This opening certainly separates the men from the boys, I do like it as I've never experienced it's like. Quite brutal if your not ready for it, I almost thought 3 sprays was too much. Now in the midnotes everything mellows and it's smells like pure barbershop. I got a flashback memory of when my Grandfather took me to a old barbershop in the late seventies for a haircut, that was the smell. You get a lemon herbal neroli shaving cream with woods which is underpinned by that cool mint effect. I've smelled this accord before in a lot of scents from Givenchy to Chanel but here it has a lot of depth which is what impresses me. When you analyze what you are smelling there is a lot going on. I can pick up Patchouli, woods, thyme and other notes. I don't really get the dirty notes, well maybe a hint here and there. Maybe YSL have cleaned it up in this formulation or it needs your body chemistry to heat up to come out, I don't know. All in all I like it and where as the shaving cream accord in Rive Gauche is dark and broody, here it's bright and cool. Thumbs up, what a ride.

I have two vintage (76% volume) bottles of this, one from 1984 and one from 1988. I bought this LA Collection release (clear bottle) as they are getting low in volume. The first thing I noticed in comparison to the original formulation is that the lemon citrus note in particular in this version is nowhere near the same strength as the original. It's there but it's not on the same level. Taken on it's own it's a pleasant take on the 1971 powerhouse release, but in comparison, sadly it's missing the target by a fairly large margin. Although it smells good, it smells nothing like the original. CONCLUSION | ★★★ If you like this fragrance profile and don't own the original formulation then this release is extremely wearable but sadly (to my nose) it is a pale imitation of the 76% volume original bottles I own.

A masterpiece. If it's one thing YSL can deliver is proper reformations, YSL Pour Homme is no exception. Although this smells nothing like the original formulation, the smell itself is the epitome of class and virility. It's bright, herbal, and smoky in the cleanest and most invigorating way. There's a slight animalic tinge in the composition due to civet and patchouli, some might even call it a funk, but to me, this makes the overall fragrance far more interesting and much more distinctive than the dozens of other copycats. Once it completely settles down it is reminiscent of the smell you experience during a wet shave treatment. That very known smell of shaving foam, and skin oil being scraped off a straight edge razor blade. Discontinued now, (again) and I'm not surprised one bit.

I think I found the last bottle on the internet that was going for decent price from an authorized retailer. It arrived today and it is the square black lacquered bottle. I think I panicked about the fact that it has been dicontinued. Glad I found it again and quite a flashback. I had a couple of bottles with the red top on repeat when I was young. A stunning fragrance and indeed there is nothing like it on the market today. Cultural heritage that should not be allowed to be discontinued.

Yesterday I was wearing YSL PH, and eventually I ended up in a bar, drinking an Old Fashioned cocktail. And they formed a perfect harmony. The dirty vibe of patchouli and moss plus a bit of citrus... and the dirty vibe of bourbon and Angostura plus a bit of orange zest. I wouldn't call YSL PH the "Old Fashioned in form of perfume", but they definitely have something in common. Both longevity and sillage are excellent. 1 to 2 sprays, no more.

Patrick Bateman's signature scent in the movie American Psycho. I wear it because I want to...fit in. The lemon opening is as heavenly as Eau Sauvage. Unfortunately it only lasts about 15 minutes like ES. After that I predominantly get the oakmoss. Not a lot going on in this one but it's high quality. Longevity is good. It's not a projection monster but it's noticeable throughout the day. A keeper.

If you have Gucci by Gucci, 1 Million, Channel Bleu, YSL La Nuit, CH 212VIP, and you want to smell a bit different in a vintage classic way, with awe and splendour, then this is a classic masculine fragrance which will be different in one of the nicest ways possible.. Or you could smell like the rest of the crowd!!

In all honestly, I couldn't tell this apart from the original, so the fragrance itself definitely gets a thumbs up. The problem lies in the price. This is far more expensive for no apparent reason other than it being a collector's edition. If you can find the original, grab it.

Oh man! This is a powerful citrus, fizzy in the beginning. Moss appears then doing a remake of the classic. The drydown is balanced. Reminds the YSL good times!

SHAME EVEN THE REFORMULATED VERSION IS NOW DISCONTINUED BY YSL! NO RESPECT TO YSL LEGACY EVEN !THAT WAS HIS SIGNATURE SCENT BY THE WAY! BRING IT BACK!

Starts like another citrus fragrance, but the oakmoss in the middle and patchouli in the base makes it dirty and special in a best possible, french way. It has some similarities with another classic, original Chanel Pour Monsieur, but YSLPH is dirtier, cause there's more patchouli than oakmoss. Good longevity and silage. I don't know, will I chase the original old bottle, cause there's a small possibility that it isn't changed through time. And this Collection version is really good. Recommended.

So here I’m checking the reformulation differences. I feel the citrus—it’s okay, but I really need to compare them one-to-one. At first glance, it seems more synthetic. Funny enough, it’s like the same cologne, just in a different village, with a different kind of air blowing around. Elements of a rural hallway atmosphere.

Definitely reminds me of Eau Sauvage by Dior. Smells nice but really old, I mean mature. Longevity and sillage are moderate.

A clean gentlemanly fragrance from a fading era of fragrance world. It's in the same category with things like Eau Sauvage, Gucci Pour Homme 1976, Chanel Pour Monsieur etc. They are similar but different in their own ways. Suitable for moderate temp days. It is an OK fragrance to me and it is not something that I have reached for quite a while now. Longevity is about average and silage is not that good. It becomes a skin scent on me pretty fast. For the price you can get some better longer lasting options. It's very citrussy, green, bright, and slightly mossy with a base of semi earthy patchouli. The original perfumer for this (Raymond Chaillan) also participated on creation of Boucheron Pour Homme. Boucheron Pour Homme EDP is a very loud and long long lasting fragrance in the same category of frags such as this. It's also very cheap. I would recommend checking on it. To me it is a more interesting fragrance than this.

Smell is very strong from single application. wanted to keep paper-blot to test mid and base tones. 20 minutes past had to throw it away from car window as it was giving me headache. Sharp mossy, no for me. very expensive as well.

Wow - bought it buy mistake. worst mistake about perfumes ever..the bottle is very pretty - it seems that this perfume was made for old people not reccomended unless your'e at the age of 50+.

Blind bought due to Amalfi lemon and citrus notes. I love lemon and citrus but this stuff stinks. Do not blind buy.

Imagine a guy back in the 60’s who used to douse the collar of his crewneck sweater with Eau Sauvage every day. The 70’s came around and by 1975 he officially decided to retire Eau Sauvage in favor of the heavy hitters of that time like Givenchy Gentleman and Brut by Fabergé. He could no longer use the same sweaters as they all permanently smelled of Eau Sauvage, so he picked a few of his favorite ones and tucked them away in a wooden chest just in case he ever decided to wear that cologne again one day. 40 years passed and one day a few of his grandchildren were rummaging around in his attic and decided to open up this chest. A distinct smell immediately wafted out and caused all the kids to turn their heads in awe of this discovery they just made of something from a completely different time period. What they were basically smelling is YSL Pour Homme: an old man’s sweater that was repeatedly doused in Eau Sauvage and left in a dusty old wooden chest for 40 years...

This indeed reminds eau sauvage. The perfume starts almost the same but in a while, you get the feeling of a more animalic/herbal smell. Will check and revert with regards to the longevity etc. The dry down brings to mind egoiste platinum, maybe there is some geranium in this. UPDATE: for a citrus smell more or less, the duration is very good...I get more than 5-6 hours and is enough for this type of scent. I like the way it develops from deeply citrucy to herbal/animalic/dirty type that is not offending, indeed nice citrus fragrance. not necessarily for summer as i see it to suit better in winter/autumn. Civet type smell and summer do not mix. Maybe the mossy dry down gives this animalic type smell...somehow old fashion but finally i consider Eau Sauvage much much better and wearable today. Too too mossy for a young guy...

Extremely close to the original, however, not identical. I say this because it just doesn't have the same depth. It might not be totally apparent at first, but if you've worn the original enough, it's noticeable straight away. It feels like the basenotes have been substituted with a 2 dimensional rendition of a 3 dimensional object. It's like comparing coke to coke zero. I imagine this is due to the restriction on ingredients able to be used. To be honest, if I were to run out of the original, which is unlikely given it's strength and the fact I have close to two full bottles worth, and I had to replace it, then this would do. However, given its cost and how cheap the original can still be had (which still leaves a lot of room for the 'discontinuation inflation') I don't think i'll ever be faced with this situation.

Believe it or not, IMO, the most successful reintroduction among the YSL classic masulines is Pour Homme which is still made of sparkling citrusy notes on top and a strong old-fashioned mossy middle phase that immediately brings to mind of the splendors of YSL during those years. I don't have a vintage Pour Homme to make a comparison but, from what I remember, it used to have a strong lavander presence which is now completely missing. The current version has also a slightly different base which seats somewhere between vintage Equipage and Eau D'Hermes but it's still darn good. Rating: 7.5/10

As someone who is really not found of what L'Oreal has done with YSL's brand, They actually did a great job on this reformulation. I own the very old vintage YSL Pour Homme, as well as a bottle from 2003 and this reformulation smells a lot like both of them. The main difference is that it's less dirty and more summer safe where as it would be hard to wear the vintage Pour Homme in the summer, so this one is more versatile. IMO it's easier to wear and closer to Haute Concentration which I prefer. All in all take it or leave it, in all honesty I prefer this to the vintage.....

This one is confusing... It starts with a truly gastly bitter accord that quickly fades to a wonderful woody lemon-and-verbena accord. But then the drydown is just a mix of woody, inky notes from Monsieur de Givenchy. Worth buying considering it is well made but compared to the three woody-citrus giants (Chanel's Pour Monsieur, Eau de Guerlain and Eau Sauvage) it smells completely unoriginal. If you crave for that stinky, bitter smell, check YSL's magnificent Kouros which is both fresher and warmer than Pour Homme.

Opens up like olips lemon candy, really mesmerising. In the opening i get a bit Opium pour home’s opening but after 20 mins it transform into some oakmossy lemon with a pinch of soft spices. It’s less bitter than eau sauvage(i prefer ES) but kinda liked this one as well just need a couple more wearings to point out where it transforms in dry down.

As a guy happy to leave the dna of designers concoctions, Penhaligon is a good launching point. Whatever the vague marketing of a masterpiece, this is nuclear. Loving oldies like YSL pour homme but clearly reading the difference, congrats, Penhaligon's for aceing this genre. Clear, clean, present and past. Adoration from IMHO. XO

Big turnaround on this fragrance i last tried this in the summer and absolutely hated hit thought what a waste of money. However in the colder months honestly it's beautiful lemony fresh aromatic and very long lasting 2 sprays and your good to go usually I'm a heavy sprayer but with this you only need 2 to 3 max.

The lemon is very prominent surprisingly long lasting for a top note. Then there is a barber shoppy middle of oak moss/powder. I am not nuts about it (sorry, the lemon is such that I feel like I smell like men's room floor cleaner), but the descriptions are right on.

YSL pour homme has a great bitter-green warmth and a persistent citrus decadence. Sounds a bit oxymoronic but it's actually a desired effect. It's a chypre with a wink. Not as good as Chanel's or Givenchy's Monseiurs, but still excellent. ****(*)

I love YSL fragrances the vintage M7 is my absolute favourite. The dry down of pour homme is honestly headache inducing terrible awful nasty drydown.please try before you buy. To me it literally STINKS.

Citrus ( tart lemon) and a lot of oak moss. Animalic notes. It is very 70’s . Strong citrus barbershop old fashioned style of fragrance. Half way between Musgo Real and Moustache Original EDT.

It’s unbelievable that YSL discontinued a classic like this. For anyone trying to find a dupe, Loewe Pour Homme is the closest one I found so far

Is it me or is one of the perfume's note is near "fecal" ?
