Opium Pour Homme

On the brink of being fully discontinued... I tried to find it in stores, and they said they will soon take it off the shelf. I managed to get a good deal on it. WOAH, this is something! Where has this been all my life? One of the most interesting and well-done thematic executions for a fragrance. The name Opium fits it so well. The initial spray is a hazy, fruity, minty black currant leaf combined with a strong, powdery, syrupy licorice and star anise. From the get-go, I'm getting a medicinal vibe, but not at all in a bad way. The opening lasts quite a bit until it settles immediately into a strong base of alcoholic vanilla and a very strange, lightly animalic, musky, woody amber of tolu. I am not so familiar with this note, but I can see that they couldn't have picked a better balsam. The animalic nuance stood out to me the most, so I've registered it from now on. It will, to be honest, catch you off guard. It has such a dirty, vulgar, sexual attraction to it as well. Like, this bottle is everything god forbade under the sun. It has allure, bravado, and it has mystique, but it has a self-corrosive personality. It smells like a week-long cocaine bender. A specific scene in the film Pulp Fiction comes to mind while smelling this, when Vincent loaded up his veins and went for a drug-fueled drive. It's so top and base-heavy, not much real complexity to it - just two transitions with slight hints of a crackling pepper (I'm interpreting it more as cloves) and galangal, which is like a more rooty, sweet version of ginger. It's about the quality blend however. Very narcotic... every whiff is addictive. It's blended so well. The creator had a vision in mind and executed it flawlessly. Nothing synthetic, boring or cheap-smelling about it. It's playing such a difficult game of balancing an alcoholic sweet vanilla, heavy blackcurrant, undertone spice, powder top of a musky, woody/animalic balsamic, and a "sterile" aldehydic soapy backdrop. The more I smell this, the more it's becoming a genuine favorite. I can tell right away that it will not go away in just a few hours, and it only needs 2-3 sprays. I don't want this to be any stronger than it already is. With all that said, it has a unique, nostalgic, masculine, classy/trashy vibe that's hard to pull off and requires a lot of confidence. I love this. Might pick up the EDP if I can find it. EDIT: Found the EDP and made a review already. Since this fragrance is still around I'll give my take on it here for those curious about the EDP; I have the EDT and love it a lot, so it became a favorite. So, I was curious what the EDP does. This one is gone, gone. Finding a bottle is pure luck. I happened to find a store that had a supply error with a tester, LOL. I pointed it out and wanted to buy the tester, but sadly wasn't allowed, so it had to be returned to the supplier. Dang it... but the lady was so kind to give me 3 samples, so I have like 10ml now. It's not as common these days that EDT/EDP meant "making it more concentrated." Instead of a label to sell a variation that smells completely different. Modern aromas are really strong these days, so EDTs can be just as strong and lasting. But it seems the case that this is actually an higher concentration of the exact same fragrance! With a much more pungent black currant opening, and it was already out there in the EDT. It does what the EDT does, but with a delayed fuse. Some of the soapiness is a bit muted compared to the EDT, making it slightly spicier. The EDT was already strong AF, but it was more balanced. Side by side, I honestly prefer the EDT, and I think I've already mentioned in my review for it that I don't want this to be stronger. The black currant here is bordering "too much" but the rest is the exact same unique personality the EDT has, but just delayed and slightly spice-forwarded and not as soapy. They're genuinely the same, and now I understand why they decided to scrap the EDP, because the slight difference is completely redundant. The touch of soapiness the EDT has makes it a more pleasant wear. However, it's still amazing. Get your bottles for the EDT while you can. You're gonna miss it when it's fully gone. THE OPIUM SUNDAY NOON SWEET OBLIVION It's Sunday afternoon somewhere between Savannah and Baton Rouge. There's nothing like southern comfort, wearing a tuxedo, eating vanilla cupcakes and drinking a spicy-sweet iced liqueur. It's sweet, it's strong, it's different, it's elegant, it's attractive. It's Saint Laurent, it's Opium! Opium is a very impressive fragrance. In the beginning, there was "Opium EDP", "Opium pour Homme EDP", "Opium Parfum" and "Opium pour Homme EDT". It got complicated later on with several flankers both for women and men. My favourite "Opium Pour Homme" has always been the original EDT for being more masculine, subtle and wearable. I had several flasks over the years and currently, I have only the last reformulation. My memory must trick me with the continuous use of this fragrance and I don't recall if the EDT first version was very different from the current one, or not. Twenty-something years went by and I am still in love with this fragrance. I know it's not as fashionable any longer as it was two decades ago. Probably younger men consider it old fashion either because they prefer the new wave of "Bleu", "Nuit", "Dylan" and "Sauvage", or because they never tried this YSL rough diamond just for being a release from the previous century. Well... young guys out there!... give it a try! It is at least as oriental and spicy as many expensive modern offers, if not more. It opens with a very strong sweet blackcurrant note and also strong star anise that adds a pungent sweet liquorice note to the fragrance opening. The opening sweet strong notes endure till the beginning of the drydown. The heart notes give you two spices to embrace a bit of the initial sweetness. The black pepper note is slightly stronger than the blue ginger although the latter kind of gives an Eastern tonality to the fragrance. The bottom notes propose very strong and pungent bourbon vanilla accentuated by the warmth of the ambary tolu balsam note and the cedar woody note. The dry down consists of a long voyage through an Indian / Chinese oriental sweet ambary scent and yummy vanilla. Let's check the sweet math of Opium EDT: ____________________ Scent Opening: 9.0 (a fantastic near animalistic blackcurrant note with anise) Scent Dry Down: 10.0 (super alluring balmy vanilla) Longevity: 8.5 (8 hours+ with two sprays) Sillage: 8.0 (more than 6-8 feet at its peak with 2 sprays) Uniqueness: 9.5 (Penhaligon's LP 9 is younger and very similar to Opium Pour Homme EDT; The similarity with Opium flankers does not count 🙂 Compliments: 8.5 (close to a serious compliment grabber. It's a head-turner because it arouses a lot of curiosity due to its pungent sweetness; some ladies just find it irresistible) Wearability: 8.5 (Use it day or night during all seasons except in the Summer) Versatility: 8.0 (You may use it in almost any event, although some perfumes are more adequate for specific situations. Avoid using it on the beach, sunny events and workouts) Quality: 10.0 (faultless) Presentation: 7.5 (elegant, effective and simple but a bit outdated) Price: 9.0 (100 ml non-tester for 31 Euros + shipping) ____________________ Overall rating: 8.79/10.00 between 8 and 9 = recommended; Opinion: One of the best exotic oriental scents for me. I like it very much. A vanilla gem. Recommended? Yes, but only if you like the scent of strong Orientals & sweet vanilla. Is blind buy worthy? No! Do try it before you buy it. “The Roaring Nineties” was the fitting title of a book on the zeitgeist and economics of that decade. “Winning” the Cold War opened up the entire world and set the stage for spectacles of every thinkable inspiration and both real and imaginary journeys to any place on the planet, with an ever accelerating pace. Little wonder, then, that towards the mid decade, amidst the first war on European soil since 1945, there was a need to create a mental escape room from it all — a feeling that inspired soothing yet sexy music albums such as Morcheeba’s Big Calm from 1997. Jacques Cavallier’s Opium pour homme captured that notion impeccably, and released already in 1995 it was my companion to the latter part of the 1990s where we all spiralled faster and faster towards a new millennium. Gifted to me for Christmas I was immediately stunned and the setting of just that season was its perfect backdrop. Yet it smelled of nothing I was used to in men’s perfumery; Oriental does not mean Christmas spices in this context. Opium pour homme is in a sense the powerhouses of the 1980s adapted to a new, global reality where everything was new and familiar at the same time. It is more sophisticated and more traveled; well trained and muscular but calm; eager, curious and open eyed, but learned at the same time. The barbershop vibes in OPH are somewhat exotic and new, even to this day. Where scents such as Jaïpur pour homme layered oriental spices atop the classic barbershop base, OPH integrates it all in a manner that feels innovative 30 years on. Perhaps it is the tolu, I would not know. And while we talk about spices: some of Cavalier’s stroke of genius here is to use galangal and other scents that are not quite the everyday orientals every one was and is familiar with, adding to the blend of the new and the known. There are also some animalic nods in the direction of Aramis, and perhaps Dalí pour homme, but executed like it was an elegant fantasy beast from a Japanese manga universe or the winning album of the French cartoon festival in Angoulême 1995. All in all, OPH is not easily categorised, but that is also the point and a great strength. Performance is perfect, if you prefer a strong EDT performer to the “beast mode scents” of the new millennium. It is quite linear after the first 30 minutes. I should mention that OPH is by far my most complimented scent through the years, yet it is absolutely not a summer scent. I mistakenly brought an unlabelled small bottle with me for a summer’s holiday the other year. OPH was in that context as misplaced as wearing an ushanka — the Russian winter hat with furry ear flaps. A note on vintage, reformulations etc.: I bought a bottle in 2018 that was perhaps slightly off compared to the original. But my 2023 purchase brought me straight back to my last “vintage” bottle from 1998. Do not hesitate to try.

Opium, the sin of the skin Yves Saint Laurent Opium Pour Homme EDT, is a piece of art of perfumery, synonymous with masculine luxury. Please do yourself a favor and add it to your collection until it's too late. Warm, alluring, Opium Homme is a creation of the house of YSL, a response equivalent to the perfume launched for women, well known by the community. I don't know if he wanted to be a success from the beginning, but over time he gained his respect and now is a reference of world perfumery. It is so well composed and the quality of the ingredients is so good that even a less trained nose can discover almost every note. For me, YSL Opium Homme is the perfume that highlighted the best note of bourbon vanilla, and the combination with blackcurrants makes it particularly syrupy, sweet and slightly aromatic. The star anise in the opening and the pepper give it some spicyness, tilting the balance towards to the masculine side. Tolu balm, cedar and vanilla bourbon together bring the scent into the category of woody spicy orientals. Very chic, Opium creates the addiction, having a special refinement typical of france perfumery, the transition from one note to another being done smoothly. The scent, as you would expect, has no sharp, no rough edges.. . Vanilla practically covers him with a soft blanket, creating a feeling of addiction from which his name is probably derived. Lascivious and seductive, Opium has an elegant and masculine touch, a little sober marking a high degree of complexity. The performance is amazing considering that we are talking about a fragrance that has passed through several formulations over time. YSL probably wanted to keep this jewel of the senses intact. It lasts on the skin for about 8-10 hours with a sillage and a projection of over two hours. The scent does not change much over time which is a good thing because you will have the beautiful feeling of the opening until the end. As for the bottle glass, elegant and classic, typically masculine, typical of the '90s. It is an elegant, seductive, extroverted perfume that offers and demands attention. Wear it to special events and you will feel special. Be careful to match it with a correct, distinct outfit and it will shine. Otherwise you will have ironic smiles. The fragrance must be well known and feded with good taste. A superb autumn perfume, in which you want to immerse yourself, induces a feeling of well-being, it dresses you in some pleasant aromas that you would never want to get rid of. Jacques Cavallier created here a masterpiece of perfumery, a painting of aromas. If it had appeared today, it would no doubt have been part of the Le Vestiaire de Parfums collection.

Yves Saint Laurent Opium Pour Homme EDT is deceptive, I have the 2022 reformulated variant but it's DNA is still very similar to the original formulation. It's deceptive because modern fragrances are designed to primarily match their initial spray scent, then as time goes on you'll see slight changes in the scent profile; yet with Opium PH EDT its sneaky, the first spray will be an offensive ginger/spice/pepper assault & nothing else, but after 5 minutes the fragrance completely changes, once the harsh spices fade you're only left with hints of that opening "spice bomb" & what follows is the most unique fragrance journey ive ever experienced in 40 years. OPIUM EDT is the antithesis of linear. It's dynamic & that's even with new batches. . . After 15 minutes you're enveloped in a creamy, minutely sweet, vanilla musk, with hints of citrus & powder. For a 1995 fragrance its a modern spin on the monolithic 20th century spiced ammonia scents from Grandpa's bathroom... if you sniffed this on first spray you think it's a generic old man scent & you're right... but the magic is waiting 10 minutes.... it's dry down after an hour reminds me of another hard to find fragrance Prada L'homme, but without the iris. . .you don't get anise & black currant in their true forms, only their earthy citrus variants. This is not safe to blind buy, it's vanilla is perfectly in the middle but by no means gourmand, it's true vanilla without the sugar... earthy, Slightly animalic, it's actually if old spice has improved its scent DNA & added hints of freshness with creamed citrus undertones. FOR SPICE LOVERS, the opening is deceptive, while the spice will be there always, it's not as powerful as its opening, so don't get upset. It goes from 100% pure spice to 75% spice. I do consider this a mature scent but not as mature as a Terre D'hermes that I see 40 plus. Opium EDT once dried down is good for late 20s and above. Definitely not a teenager scent but if you like it then sure. Fall/Winter/Cold Spring days/Dates/Under Spray if using indoors for work, honestly this is a 1 or 2 spray fragrance for indoors, so it will last you easily a year plus, and for price you can't beat that... Lastly, I know many men don't layer but you should because Opium is a great base layer for fragrance combinations...if you want to sweeten it up or even make it more vanilla I'd use those scent types...

First time I smelled this one, in the beginning of my journey, I immediately loved it and understood the name of it. It hooked me, completely, in a weird and, yet, familiar way. Because I started my journey in my late 20's, there's many fragrances that I'd probably smelled years and years ago but don't know. And when I started smelling classics, something clicked in my mind. Some familiar feeling of knowing that smell. And for some reason, those fragrances always became favorites of mine. This happened with Opium pour homme, as I said before, and with other YSL classics, curiously. Jazz and Kouros, for example. Digging into the fragrance, composed by Jacques Cavallier, this is the counterpart of the mega successful fragrance from 78. The idea was to create a masculine version of it but, not necessarily, similar in smell but in concept. A very addictive masculine! Cavalier, at that time, had some hits in the industry. L'eau D'Issey (both genres), JPG Classique, Lancôme Pôeme and Pasha de Cartier. This one didn't reached the level of L'eau D'Issey or Classique but it's fantastic, in my opinion, and one of my favorite scents ever. It's a interesting but weird combination of fresh wild fruits (blackcurrant), vanilla and cedarwood. Turning this fragrance in Oriental category with a spicy touch. Star anise is listed as a note and I detect it mixed with blackcurrant in the opening. But the blackcurrant will be there until the end giving the weird and exotic element to this fragrance. Sweet and fresh, a bit plastic sometimes, a bit woody and really addictive and masculine. I have the parfum version also, which differs in the Vanilla dosage and the performance. More sweet and enveloping and ultra long-lasting (specially the older version in that great blue bottle) but less fresh. I prefer the EDT for fall and spring and the EDP for colder winter days. The EDP seems to be discontinued so, take the EDT and you're fine. Longevity is good (7h easily) and the projection is average. I think that this is a Greta masculine oriental, with classic masculine vibes but yet, modern and, specially, very unique. Cavallier is a nose that I respect and like a lot and here is one of his creations that I cherish the most. I can't say that is a masterpiece, but, in my world, is a homerun

Ohhhh Opium Pour Homme, how I wish I knew if you were discontinued or not. There have been rumors, but this truly is a classic that IMO should not go ignored if you're into bolder, more classical styles of mens perfumery. By all means, this is not your current flavor, but it isn't outdated and it IS worth owning despite the fact that this came out about 25 years ago. I've noticed the prices going up, sadly I fear it may be discontinued, but there still seems to be a supply somewhere as the discounters do seem to be getting it still. With that said, I wouldn't wait. I myself will be picking up a backup bottle in the very near future and for how much I love this fragrance I may have to get a few backup bottles. With that bit out of the way, this fragrance is something that a sophisticated gentleman would have worn on a night out in the late 90s, or possibly even as a signature scent. Now that I think about it, I guarantee you there were corporate execs back in 1998 or something who wore this. It smells so rich, it's vanillic yet that's so misleading because of how fresh and spicy it can come across. It's both warm and refreshing at the same time somehow, which makes it an excellent choice for year round use but perhaps the powdery and vanillic notes could be overwhelming in intense heat. It's an office safe fragrance, it's formal, you can dress it down to be casual, and the performance is very, very good. Even though it's EDT concentration, this easily outperforms many of the EDP and extrait concentrated fragrances in my collection, and mine isn't even a vintage formula - I bought it last year and presumably it's from 2019 or 2020. I love the way the blackcurrant and star anise play off each other, I love the spiciness of it, I love the warm vanilla and I even like that slightly medicinal quality that it has which can be offputting to some I'm sure. I personally love fragrances that don't just try to overwhelm you with safety but rather take a few chanes to create something truly magical and I think that's what YSL did with Opium. Overall, Opium Pour Homme is an absolute classic. For me, I would say it's a perfect fragrance and I'm really sad if it's discontinued. 100%, this is an A+ from me.

I bought this at the Walmart in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan some odd 8 years ago.I no longer reside in that part of the globe.... It was cheap at 30$ for YSL and I bought it.I remember not liking it very much at the time. I have since revised my opinion and gave this one a LOVE vote. Ok this is truly master perfumery ...but old school. This has a lot of Dad Uncle even GrandPa nostalgia vibe. If this is 1995 it certainly comes right before a major shift in male perfumery to more delicate and or sweeter scents. The modern metrosexual scent revolution that yielded JPG and Joop etc etc. I don't see a young guy out in the clubs wearing this (they still club right?). It's so old school clean and spicy that to the untrained it's just another aftershave. The upside is the perfection of the blend. It's a well dressed middle class man. It's not a scent for occasions but rather a great everyday clean and identifiable fragrance. A classic. You will find find a definite similarity to things you've smelled before in fragrance. Herein lies the classic twist tot his scent. It's very barbershop clean man scent with a softness and nostalgic familiarity that kind of knocks you off guard. Its a comforting scent . The anise note is ther and harkens to a bottle of anise liquere in the bar that my sibling and I would always steal a swig from as kids. The bourbon vanilla does give it a boozy light vanilla note. A hint. It's also nicely spicy but I'm not getting a pepper ...maybe some fruitiness in black currant but it pops up here and there. It can be slightly medicinal if you huff it on a wrist . Clean! That's my description of this scent. Not for everyone but those who fall for it will adore it . Not a blind buy. Not a panty dropper (well maybe on the right person). It's masculine without the attitude. It's refined without being ostentatious. It's clean without being bland and it's spicy without being agressive.

Oh MAN! Now THIS fragrance is One Spicey-a-Meat-a-Ball!! Lol! No, but what a gorgeous, Fresh, Semi Sweet Masculine fragrance! Its VEEERY distinctive and captivating scent, and I actually believe that on a confident Woman this would smell ultra-Sexy and alluring FOR SURE! Now a lot of YouTube reviews mention how the Bla k Currant note supposedlystands out in this dna, yet I am NOT able to really distinguish "Black Currant" or any fruitiness per se, although I am sure that the note gives this dna pleanty of Nuance, Tartness and plays a big role in this dna. Also, I dont understand why some folks are claiming that Opium Pour Homme's latest formulation is "Weak and Watered down", when I find quite potent and long lasting (6 to 7 hours on skin AT LEAST) with good projection. When I first spray Opium PH on, its quite pungent, but it becomes a bit softer and elegant during the dry-down and it LASTS! Also, while NOT super similar, the spices in Opium Pour Homme.are giving me the spices form Bogart Pour Homme! Im actually doing a side by side right now and the similarities are quite striking! Now, about 10 to 15 minutes later, during the dry-down these dna's start to go in totally different directions bc Bogart ph has a ton of that GORGEOUS, Fresh-Masculine Lavender, while Opium ph has that tart Black Current and it remains quite spicey and sweeter remaining an Oriental, whereas Bogart ph goes into Fougere territory. Both are fantastic, but Opium PH is just better and more refined imo. Opium PH as an amazing fragrance, classic but NOT dated, and I highly recommend it to the fellas and even women who enjoy spicey-Orientals. An 8 outta 10 which is a pretty rare score in MY book. Very nice indeed! (BTW if anyone has both Bogart Pour Homme and Opium Pour Homme, can you do a side by side comparison and get back to me? Im super curious to know if Im alone in this opinion.)

The Chronicles of Kapow or The Ultimate Fragrance Buyer’s Guide Until I Find a More Pompous Title: Entry Number 21 It was my signature for a while. So, you can guess, it is, in my opinion, a very solid proposition. While almost everyone around me was trapped with the freshies of 1990's or still running on the green scents of the 1980s, I had Fahrenheit, Opium and and Ungaro III in my rotation. And I was a teenager. This one was the bold, mysterious and sensual one. There is a scandalous feeling attached to this fragrance, something mature, but also decadent, just enough to spice up the game a little bit and to imprint your scent in the memories of your flings of the hour. Reformulations have affected this fragrance, but it is a still a very good one and the actual version is, in my opinion, very true to the original DNA. I can be wrong and I hope I am. However, sadly, I think the signs of discontinuation are here. Opium pour homme is not available anymore on numerous websites. I have check several shops in different countries. It is not there anymore in many cases. Where I live, two SA from two different distributors told me it is now out of stock and it will not come back. Same for Jazz by the way (the little square bottle). From "La collection" that kept alive for years several vintage YSL fragances, only M7 seems to have been saved... for now. It still shows up on many websites. So, chances are Opium is slowly vanishing. We can dream it will make a comeback in a different package or be reformulated for the best, but there are reasons to worry. YSL is apparently reorganizing its sales strategy and catalogue. In my book: a solid A+. Since, I am biased, it deserves a distinction: Magna cum laude.

Original 1995 formulation vs. current L'Oreal reformulation. I first smelled OPH on a winter hollyday in Turin, 2006. It was almost a mystical experience, almost 20 years later I still remember the day. Despite the sales assistant advice, who really wanted to push me some other fragrance, I bought my first 30ml bottle. For some time was my special occasion fragrance. Since then I had multiple bottles, EDP included. I got bored of it and I didn't ware it for a couple of years. Two years ago I smelled it again on someone. I was struck by nostalgia, I had to have it again. The same day I ordered a fresh bottle. It was, of course, the newest reformulation, I thought it was the same as always, and I was happy with my bottle. But a few weeks ago I ordered a vintage miniature from ebay, and I have to admit it, it's quite different! The vintage one is definitely richer, reminds me more of the EDP than to the newest formulation. The opening is very different, smells smoother and syrupy, has a camphoric accord (a bit like tiger balm), which I personally love very much. And is stronger. Still, the new version isn't bad, I don't agree that it's just a shadow of itself. It's still Opium, just a bit fresher and more casual. It remains one of the best designer fragrance you can buy at your local perfumery. But if you love it as much as I do you own it to yourself to try the vintage too. It's not yet crazy expensive, but it gets harder to find. I bought two 100ml splash bottles from 1995 and one of 30ml. For me it is a 10/10 fragrance, my personal favorite for winter, night time or special occasions.

A classic. A very classy gentleman's fragrance. The name evokes illicit pleasure and the historical mystique of a rare and precious commodity that brought Imperial China to its knees. I was first introduced to (real) opium in my 20s at university - it's a black tarry substance that when heated expands and changes colour to a reddish brown, at which point it can be smoked. Since I liked the smell, I was eager to try its namesake fragrance. Sadly Opium pour Homme smells nothing like real opium, which is resinous, slightly woody and vaguely reminiscent of myrrh. The ladies parfum smells more like the real thing. In any case Opium pour Homme is pleasantly intoxicating in its own right: opens with an effervescent fruity note (that I would never have identified as blackcurrant) paired with a subtle anise (reminds me of watered absinth), wonderfully different to a more traditional citrus or bergamot overture, and evolves to become a wonderfully creamy ambery vanilla with a soft spicy aspect. Opium pour Homme is uplifting, intoxicating and elegant, sweet but not too sweet. Performance and longevity are respectable, and it's so nice it attracts lots of compliments. As far as I can tell Opium pour Homme is the same as I remember from all those years ago. At current prices it represents amazing value for money.

Opium Pour Homme Yves Saint Laurent Managed to acquire a brand new bottle of this lovely classy classic OPH a while back. This is a 2017 batch. This is a very warm and comforting scent. Sophisticated and Mature. Oriental, Soft and Fresh spicy, not so heavy on the vanilla and not too powdery, slightly amber balsamic sweet with woodiness underneath The Star Anise is the star in the opening together with the Grapefruit 🍇 This is a scent profile that is hard to find in the current bunch of modern day releases But yet can stand tall and high and makes you stand out amongst a crowd where you get the Designers Bleus, Sauvages, Eros, Gourmands Niches etc. Very very yummy addictive scent. Musculine definitely and will attract the right ladies. I'm sure many older and matured gentleman have worn this at some point of time and knows what I'm talking about. The older bottles from the 90s and 2000s seems much stronger based on my knowledge of using the testers available to me as a younger guy back then. Perhaps this new bottle of mine need a while to sit and oxidise for a better performance but I'm glad I can reach out for it anytime now. After all it's a Sexy, classic 90's oriental frag that's delicious and so cozy to wear especially on a night.

I had a 30 ml i bought in ~2005. One of my all time favourites - nectar of gods. Couldn't wear it too often, as it was so strong, and only really suited me for some occations (suit, late night, cold winter). But this was the one scent that made me want to sniff my wrists over and over again. Heavenly in the mid and dry down. Anyway: 2026, my bottle ran out some time ago, and i figured i'd have to get a new one. I won't wear it much, but what if it suddenly becomes unavailable?! (the horror!) So after first wear of new bottle: Longevity is still very good. Could easily smell this on my skin after 30 hrs. The sillage seems less monstrous, yet still perfectly fine (and it may improve with some rest). But there's something about the smell... it seems less special, somehow: more translucent and a bit fresher, with less depth in the opening and early stages. In the mid and dry down I suddenly picked up cinnamon, which has never happened before. I suddenly associated the smell with Eau de Baux (original formulation), which i rather dislike. There is something lacking in the base... Though I don't have the nose to pick up exactly what has changed. Perhaps it will return with 6-7 months of rest. I hope so.

Could Opium pour Homme be the greatest oriental fragrance for men ever created? I say, yes, definitely. Surely, there are more assertive orientals out there, but none is as sophisticated as Opium pour Homme. A combination of tolu balsam, vanilla and star anise is a heavy hitter on its own, but when you least expect it, there is the currant that elevates the whole trio and gives it the fresh facet and makes the composition as unique as it is. I always thought of Opium as a kind of unattainable summit, something far away, grand and intensely beautiful. I always postponed buying a bottle, thinking of how other more straightforward fragrances smell and wear. How foolish I was! Elusive Opium was there all the time, waiting for those who know. And soon, it will be but a memory and a legend. Every fragrance from YSL feels like a magnum opus, which made the whole house exceptional in maintaining supreme quality and always releasing only the best possible fragrance a perfumer could compose. Sadly, the great man is gone, the house defunct - in my eyes at least - and humiliated to the level of just another faux luxury brand. What a tragedy.

This is pretty much my signature scent. I rediscovered it after having first smelled it on a classmate back in 1996. It was pretty intoxicating back then and it is even more so now, with all these generic smelling men's frags like Bleu de Chanel and Sauvage dominating the market. To me, it smells like a spicy cinnamon apple pie and champagne with a powdery after smell. It's very different from anything that's available right now. I love the nostalgia in it. The Issey Miyake Nuit d'Issey smells a bit like this one, insofar as 90's retro vibes are concerned. I am kinda happy this is not getting much attention because it will make me smell more unique too. I just wish they still made the Eau de Parfum. Update: This is one of those fragrances that smells much better in the air than it does on skin. For some strange reason this cologne does not smell good on the crook of my arm but it's fine everywhere else. The anise doesn't mix well with the oil and sweat in the crook of my elbow! but works perfectly everywhere else.

Discovered this in '96 and it was love at first snif. A bit later I discovered the EdP version, and I loved that even more. Too bad that one is discontinued, the vintage EdP was one of the best scents ever. The EdT is reformulated some, but not butchered and mutilated like they did to Kouros (that one is basically no longer usable). In the '00's and '10's I kind of forgot about Opium. I recently re-discoverd and stacked up 5 back up bottles because rumours come and go about Opium being discontinued (it isn't, right now). This fragrance is still relevant today, in my opinion. It is a quite unique blend of fresh and warm. The reformulated version opens a bit more harsh compared to the vintage, but the drydown is pretty much the same. If you can get your hands on a vintage EdT or even better, a vintage EdP, you are in for something special, but the current version is also a must-buy if you never tried Opium pour Homme. Current Edt can be found quite cheap by the way. In my top-5 fragrances for life.

Calming, warm-spicy elegance. Wears quite close to the skin but forms a nice persistent, dark, spicy, ambery scent bubble - especially when worn on the elbow. When moving around I pick up on more of the vanilla. I love the dry-down, it's an inky black amber (a type that I associate with hot printer toner! In a good way of course). A type of dry-down that also reminds me of the long amber dry-out of Light Blue Forever Pour Homme. Would love to know more about what gives this effect. If you wear perfumes for your own enjoyment, you'll love this shielding winter warmer. On another note, I can't believe there is only one review here comparing Opium Pour Homme to Gucci Envy For Men! They are both fairly different but there is a certain overlapping accord that binds them together. If you want to know what all the fuss is about with Envy, this is a way to get your nose on a smells-kinda-like approximation (not a dupe though). Enough for you to go "uh-huh, ok, so that's a ballpark for the Envy type".

Opium Pour Homme perplexes me, a smell which seems rather straightforward until you try and put it into words. This is among the best of masculine orientals, yet behaves differently to any other I’ve encountered before. It is at once fresh and warming, clean and spicy, it does it all so effortlessly. Initially it’s a bit of a kicker; dried ginger, sharp black pepper, a bitter leafiness, it’s all a bit macho. But give it some time, and it transforms, dropping the bold facade, instead adopting an incredibly soft, pillowy spiciness alongside this impeccable blackcurrant note, which is both sweet and fruity, yet remains still dry and leafy, creating an almost minty effect in the distance. This is the upper echelon of class and restraint in the realm of men’s perfume. It doesn’t scream, it whispers and for those who get close enough, will linger on their mind long after you’ve left their presence. Jacques Cavallier created a masterpiece with this perfume.

Wow! Opium Pour Homme really does get much more potent/long-lasting with time (Maturation.) It did take a couple months to get as strong as it is now bc I recall using it a few times during the first month or two that I'd had it and DO NOT recall it being as potent or ESPECIALLY as long-lasting as it is now. Initially I had to over-spray a bit to get decent projection and longevity. Now 3 or 4 spritzes last a good 7 to 8 hors on skin and can smell it on my shirt till the following day. The Black Currant seems a bit more noticable now as do the spices. Whereas initially I was a bit dissapointed with the performance and honestly had only grabbed a bottle bc its been discontinued, Im now very happy with my purchase and feel its definately worth the nearly $100 pricetag it demands. Truley a classic Masterpiece that doesn't feel dated, but is different enough from todays fragrance trends to smell "Unique" yet mature. A 9 outta 10 fragrance for sure!

Definitely a Spicy Oriental. Old school vibes for sure. The spices are very upfront, Star Anise & Black Pepper. The Black Currant sweetness balances it out very well. The Galanga is not super apparent on skin, but more so from the atomizer, but you definitely do get a cooling effect from it. The vanilla is not super prominent to me. On the dry down, its a little resinous and definitely woodsy. There's talks of this being discontinued in the USA so if you were thinking of it, now may be a time to get it before the prices spike. I got a bottle from CVS of all places using a 30% off coupon bring the pre-tax price to sub $50. Got a 2016 batch code and the longevity is ok with light sprays. I'm sure spraying heavy would probably solve that. Don't feel like it's a must buy, but if you can get a good deal and are a collector like me, this may be worth a pickup. Can't see youngsters digging this, but doesn't smell overly dated either.

People complaining about being warned that the new formulation isn't good... you can still get the old formulation, we are telling you to go with one of those as they are better than the current formulation. So do yourself a favour and pay a little bit more and grab an older bottle. Yes this is a review site, but you are fully allowed to talk about the original Robocop when reviewing the 2014 reboot, and it is perfectly acceptable to compare the two. As for the current one, it still has the DNA of the original but only on the dry down, the opening is completely different and smells a little anamalic to me. I'm still a little confused as to whether this fragrance was discontinued or if it is back in full production, every counter I ask about it says the former but it is starting to show up on various websites. That being said, I don't think I ever saw anything official stating that it was going to be discontinued so who knows?

This is very good. Probably the best Yves Saint Laurent. Update. Definitely the best Yves Saint Laurent. I was testing all the colognes and had gone through all YSL but this one was rare and when I was at the store that had it I was distracted by the new MYSLF and didn't test this sooner. The combo is pretty genius. He's going for India without going for India at all. Star anise and pepper are both part of garam masala but then again they're two ingredients that are very common in Europe as well and for ginger which is the other Indian spice, he hasn't gone for ginger but galangal. And then the vanilla creates such a contrast but also gives the spices a European connotation. It's so good. I actually tested 3 Jacques Cavallier colognes made for Louis Vuitton today and nothing even comes close to how original and genius this is. And I bought this only for 50 euros whereas the LVs are at least two hundred euros.

This is my all time favourite scent and I have a 1997 Sanofi bottle and a couple of 2007 Gucci era bottles, really upset when I heard it was discontinued. However, I recently saw it pop up in a U.K. retailer and bought a bottle with the batch no. 22x01DU Which says it was manufactured in October 2023, so has it now been bought back or is this the final batch? Would be great if anyone can enlighten me. As for the smell, well as you could probably guess, it isn’t the same as the vintage bottles, it still has the same DNA but it lacks the powerful black current punch of the original, it’s not the powerhouse it used to be, the dry down is still maybe 85/90% of what it was, but the sillage is maybe 50% of what it used to be. The fragrance itself is still unmistakably Opium Pour Homme though. I guess I’ll have to still keep chasing those vintage bottles down. To this day I have still not tried the Parfum.

Managed to pick this up today for £37 from a site that sells testers. Has a zingy ginger and vanilla vibe to it that smells super professional and classy and could easily become a signature scent for an older gentleman wearing a suit or chinos and a polo shirt. The black pepper is there but it’s not overpowering or off putting and have to say this whole blend is expertly well done. Weirdly the blackcurrant is meant to be a top note but I picked this up later into the dry down and can imagine in the winter this would bounce off my skin A clean and classy classic in my opinion and can see why this has stood the test of time for over thirty years now. Value 9/10 Scent 9/10 Longevity 8/10 Sillage 8/10 Repurchase when run out - Yes Blind buy safe - if you like aftershaves such as Eau Sauvage then I would say yes as not the same but similar if that makes sense

I'm pretty sure the galangal is way stronger in here than it's voted for... but I guess that's because most people don't know it. You smell the ginger like thing... that's galangal. I feel like all the notes are equally strong. Isn't this the most balanced fragrance ever? I have smelt all of Jacques Cavalier's work pretty much and this is definitely his best work. I kinda prefer Antaeus to this but that's pretty much the only fragrance that I prefer to this and Antaeus is a take on Aramis, as much as I hate Aramis, whereas Opium pour Homme when it comes to vision beats Antaeus... there isn't really anything like it. Oh yeah and right after I wrote this I heard Jacques Cavallier say Ginger is his favourite note along with amber and rose. This is a genius use of "ginger" though. I really think galangal instead of ginger makes this so amazing and ingenious.

In my view, Opium pour Homme is a composition with a distinctly oriental character. While it presents a softer, more mainstream-friendly interpretation of the Orient, the fragrance possesses an undeniably captivating and seductive allure — almost addictively so. That said, true enthusiasts of deeply authentic oriental scents might prefer exploring creations by Serge Lutens or Montale. Nevertheless, Jacques Cavallier’s work left a strong impression on me, and it’s easy to see why this fragrance became such a success. Though it leans toward an evening scent, it’s versatile enough to wear during the day without feeling out of place. Interestingly, Opium pour Homme also carries an understated elegance, adding to its charm. My Rating: Highly recommended! (7/7)

Spicy, floral, soapy "Oriental." Lots of different aromas from this one, it's quite complex; Aldehydes, cloves, cinnamon, powder, aniseed, nutmeg, amber, oakmoss. Base is spicy vanilla alongside fruits and wafts of orange blossom. It's warm on the skin. A little "sherberty." Smells like a sweet blossomed breeze blowing through a Turkish Bazaar (In a good way!) It's classy, better suited to mature men. Good all year, day or night. Might be a bit much for the office, feels more like a scent to be enjoyed at your own leisure. Pefromance is great, good projection and lasts as a fruity skin scent until the next day. (Current version - or at least from the last couple of years.) Is a tad throwback, so try before you buy. All in all it's a love for me.

What in the world is this concoction? It’s so potent and commanding. When it’s first sprayed it’s an overwhelming oriental blast, lots of pepper up top I found. Once it had settled down it becomes a gorgeous pepper and vanilla mix, with just a hint of creaminess to it. It’s pretty incredible, I mean this would easily be one of the most well formulated fragrances I’ve ever smelt. This is how all fragrances should be, a great smell, it lasts all day and it’s projection is powerful, many of these high-priced scents could learn a thing or 2 from Opium. Caution. I oversprayed this one day and found I got a headache, wear it sparingly as it’s a beast that needs 2-3 sprays maximum, otherwise it might send you around the twist. Amazing. 10/10.

The year was 1999, I got my first real job when I was in high school, and the place I worked was so janky, they gave me someone else’s name tag to use. The name on the tag was “Rome”, so I added an “o” on the end, slathered myself in the fanciest smelling fragrance I could buy at the mall, which was Opium, and had a great intro with many girls that summer. I remember my boss lady telling me that I smelled like a magazine because they always had the page samples in them then and it was strong enough to smell it specifically over all the other ones. Sure the modern one isn’t as thick but really that’s for the best, because it being more airy is a plus in my opinion as it could easily overwhelm. It does perform fairly well despite that.

One of the three greatest French fragrances for men ever created in my opinion. With the other two being Chanel Egoiste and Dior fahrenheit. The holy Trinity of the French big three. My father introduced me to this one around 1995 or so. One morning he was in the bathroom shaving and putting on a suit for work when all of a sudden I smelled the most heavenly scent I'd ever known. Low and behold he was spraying on this one (although it was the much more rare EDP rather than the EDT) he sprayed some on me and I was im love. This one opened the door for me to also discover the rest of his fragrance collection including Fahrenheit, Egoiste, Drakar Noir, Kouros, Antaeus, Balenciaga Homme, CK Obsession, Eternity and Escape, etc.

If you are reading the reviews here to decide whether to get it or not "although I'm unsure if it's discontinued or not".. I'd say GO AHEAD & BUY IT! OPH is a unique ..beautiful... manly.. classic type but I can imagining it trending like crazy if it was released in our time now... it did in the past btw! I can't remember exactly what the notes were like since this was on my shelf 15 years ago but what I remember is that OPH smells like warm spicy, a little old-school with a nice dry powdery background... OPH is a very nice and special fragrance ...very classy nothing from the current fragrances similar to it or even close... I don't know about the other flankers by YSL.. but this is unique trust me. 1000/10 Memories 💙

Bordeaux. Camembert. Opium pour Homme. The French know how to create a masterpiece. This is pure class. Stunning. Was lucky to pick up a half-price bottle from a local chemist today. Tbh, I didn’t expect it to be much cop given they were clearing out old stock and the packaging was dusty. How wrong I was. Straight off the bat, this magical juice hit hard. Blackcurrant, spice, liquorice and vanilla. The dry down is pure heaven. Mature only? If you’re not into your sweet, bubble gum frags, you could wear this and feel regal at any age. Right now, I don’t want to move. I just wanna sit here and take in this wonderful creation. Later, I may reach for a baguette, cheese and pour myself a glass of red. C’est magnifique.

I really like the smell. It's totally an old man cologne, but I'm 40, so that's fine. If you like the shulton old spice, you'll prob like this. On my skin, I get notes of fruit, chocolate, powder, and spices. It's like an adult version of an old axe spray kinda. My only gripe is that it doesn't last super long and it stays close to the skin after a half hour or so. Maybe it's the batch, maybe what I got off Amazon is fake, maybe it's because it's the later formulation. Idk. I have a bottle of the older stuff coming next week. I'll see what's up. Edit: It grows on yeh. Definitely a scent for cold days or nights out. It lasts on clothes for a long ass time. I'm really stoked with it. It's not a daily driver though.

My batch is from 2018 and the one they have at the store is from the same year but a few months newer. I don't know if it's the same formula/batch cuz they're from the same year but if they are different then I would say the newer one is better than the one I have I don't know if it's the most recent one either.... so I'm gonna go against what everyone and say the newer one might be better but then again I may be wrong and they're exactly the same. Other than the batch code the sticker looked different too and the plastic on the bottle looked more bluish but that may have to do with the lights at Sephora. Was there a reformulation in 2018? Let me know if you know. If so then the new formulation is better.

They managed to put comfort and joy in a bottle! My favorite fragrance of all time, rumors of it being discontinued may be just that... rumors. This successful frag has been produced since 1995, so I hope it will be continued. A joy to wear and a frag that brings comfort to the soul, with its boundless harmony with your best feelings. Sweet oriental spiciness with beautiful accords of anise, vanilla and cedar bursting through and staying there once they do. Fabulous opening and amazing dry-down have kept this a popular frag on the shelves for nearly 30 years. Great performance and wonderful accomodating sillage that always garners compliments with this classic, refined beautiful fragrance.

After seeing all the preposterous reviews that mostly refute differences in formulations and batch variations, I nearly lost interest in writing a review for this one. It hit me that I am fatigued by all the blowhard behavior among fragrance enthusiasts, compounded by FOMO hysteria which can make my brain short circuit. Full disclosure, I have a more recent version of Opium Pour Homme, and I like it. It reminds me of a more even-tempered variation on Penhaligon's LP No. 9 for Men (which actually came four years later) with an attractive cassis pastille accord among the star anise and warm tolu balsam in the base. I shall not pontificate—I will simply say this is a pleasure to wear.

The bottle doesn't tell the story of this well balanced oriental spicey masterpiece from yesteryear. Upon first spray and all the way through the dry down, you will be on a journey of tops, mids, and base notes that are all detectable and yet blended very well. This must have been what we would say "niche" quality in its inception, is it dated? I think not, I prefer to think of this one as classy, regal, gentleman like, mature or sophisticated. If you are 25 or younger, you may not think the same. I'm middle aged and grew up with these types of well blended powerhouses awesome fragrances. It's not your invictus, aventus or sauvage. It's class and manly elegance!

Nose Note #590 Another wonderful legendary mens fragrance from the 90s that deserves the praise. It's not fresh, but you could wear this any season, it's not a heavy scent, it's just spiced up. It's so elegant you can't turn it down in the summer. It doesn't feel very old. It's a little old, but reasonable. The star anise note is quite naturalistic. It's lightly sweet, very lightly. It's not eternal, but it's very long lasting. It's a very decent fragrance for $125. Much better than a lot of modern stuff. Those spicy fragrances from the 90s ought to be brought back. I wonder what the EDP version is like. 8.5/10, gives me similar feelings as Givenchy Xeryus Rouge

A fruity, powdery, spicy gem of a fragrance - certainly in my all time 'Top Five'. Somewhat tamed from what it used to be but still a strong performer which remains true to the original. Nowhere near as common as in its heyday, which means you'll stand out from the crowd and garner plenty of compliments. Sadly, now showing as 'out of stock' on YSL's site - surely, the tolling bell of the much feared discontinuation. Time to raid the discounters, boys and gals - let the frenzy begin. *UPDATE* Now back in stock as of 05/06/21. Not possible to have too many just in case though, is it?

I love it! My mom used to use it ( the men version and this is one unforgettable memory). Unfortunately the current version is "tuned down" and incomplete... many stuff are missing. For my luck , I used to try it by chance with some bio-, natural... rosemary, nutmeg, bulnesia, basil extract beard oil. This combination with natural ingredients brought to live in very fancy manner this masterpiece and at the same time made me sad(the "fresh spicy accord" popped up). This companies are cheating us so much lately - they can do their product very high end ... BUT they just do not want.

Fruity masculine with gently soft powdery sillage. Almost transparent. The tinge of fruity sourness from black currant is excellent and goes a long way without being over the top. The anise comes out after a few minutes here, and it is tame and really easygoing. It is vanillic but not cloying at all. I think it is only subtly sweet. It wears like a nice powdery almost white-musky oriental fougere. A distant (and more romantic) cousin of Zino/Beau du Jour. I like this fragrance a lot and I reach for it often. It does smell slightly old school — but I don’t mind that at all. 9.3/10

I will always remember this fragrance. My father wore it every time he went for a night out. I remember him, 6'3 and broad shouldered, freshly shaved, and, being an ex RAF policeman, wearing a perfectly ironed dress shirt and pair of crisp trousers, polished shoes, a tie, his jacket over his shoulder, and this scent radiating off him as he stood in the middle of the lounge, embodying the quality of the man I saw before me. Needless to say I think this fragrance is what such a man smells like. Mature, sophisticated, confident, with a subtle smile and warm eyes.

@Himeros00 i went on a little buying spree and recently bought a 1997 version, a 2007 version, a 2013 version and the new October 2023 version you have bought, unfortunately, it isn't the same fragrance we used to have, there is something really odd going on with the initial top notes of the spray, it is missing that soft spicy blackcurrant hug that it used to provide. dry down is similar to the old scent. But i am glad that it still seems to being made, i bought mine from The Perfume Shop, but i have noticed it on other online retailer sites as well.

I find this amazing, spicy yet fresh, somewhat sweet but not cloying, super rich yet casual enough, obviously it's down to individual taste, I personally can't see how this is dated yet my aunt who is 75yo told me this smells like a grandad, I just happen to love the scent so make of this what you will. The current EDT has pretty decent performance (I don't like my cologne to project too much anyway). There is some transformation in the drydown. I like the fact that this is not popular at all but this may lead to it being discontinued unfortunately.

This will always bring me back to middle school days, from my dads collection. Its spicy, its masculine, its sexy. Definitely for older gentleman. But for me I wore it as a pre pubescent teen and I loved the way it made me feel when I wore it, like I was older than I really was. Very gentlemen like but the spices is what makes it very addictive to the ladies. I think I was able to get a older batch bottle and its longevity and projection are superb. 10/10 as this is one that started my whole fragrance journey all those years ago

Spicy too, it's tough to figure out when to wear this because it's bloody strong. Cloys very easily too so watch out on the atomiser. Not so much a scent with a pair of balls on it, but it takes some balls to wear Opium. Fragrance wise I believe the original womens one smells better, closer to what the word opium means. Wow , Amazing fragrance, Elegant, Classy and Unique. It is very wonderful from the opening to the end. It opens up with like fruity and soft Spicy then dry down is vanilla woody. This perfume has a very unique composition and It's perfect for the fall and winter. I really enjoy it and I love Opium Pour Homme EDT by YSL . I'm so happy that I have it in my collection. The art of bottle design is wonderful. Longevity is very good. Highly Recommended. Bravo Monsieur Cavallier ! Two Thumbs Up. Rating : 9 / 10
