A Mochi Atelier In Tokyo

Scored a 10mL rollerball off a resale site for a decent price; full bottles are going for way too much at resale these days. I'm sure originally this was quite affordable. A very interesting fragrance. It's a little savory, it's a little sweet, it's a little watery, it's fresh. Does it smell like mochi? It smells like what I imagine unflavored mochi dough might smell like. I get a bit of that bouncy, chewy vibe from this, but definitely doesn't smell like a sweet mochi treat. Does it smell like sake as others have mentioned? I have never had sake so I don't know exactly, but it doesn't smell distinctly like an alcoholic beverage. If sake smells like a savory slightly sweet watery rice beverage, then sure, it does. It's honestly a little weird, and yet I can't stop smelling it. I'm addicted to the weirdness. I find it to be perfectly unisex. Longevity is on the shorter side of moderate, around 3-4 hours, better than what I expected given what I have heard about Zara fragrances (this is my first one). Would I buy a full bottle? Maybe, if I find one that isn't $80. But I'll enjoy my rollerball, and I'm sure it'll last me a while.

A lovely scent of perfume with powdery rice notes. As a person born and raised in East Asia, I was really surprised that some people hate this perfume. This has very subtle rice and pear note that not many people feel bothered. Smells like a Japanese sake drink, but has fewer alcohol smells. In Korea, we don't really suggest wearing bold scents at work nor on any other occasion, so I think this one is perfect to make me feel better but leaves just a hint of scent to others. But also really shocked that so many people hate this but love the lemon pastry smelled one from the same series. I cannot stand that smell because it reminds me of cheap air fresheners. I tried it many times to like it, but it smelled terrible. Lasts quite well over 4 hours but cannot stop spraying this on my hair lol. Thinking about buying some more at home to keep this from discontinue.

This is so good. Soft, very likeable and inoffensive, but still very unique. All three notes are very distinguishable, but at the same time incredibly well blended. Staying power really kinda sucks on skin, but on clothes it actually stays really well. After 6 hours, I was still getting occasional whiffs. You can also reapply liberally, the price is affordable. I recommend it if you want a unique and soft fragrance for daily use. The bottle is absolutely adorable. EDIT: The longevity is weird. On skin it sticks around for a couple of hours, but on clothes ... that's a whole different story. Right now I'm wearing a shirt I sprayed 3 days ago - it smells the same as it did when I sprayed it, the smell is soft, but very present. So if you don't mind spraying your clothing, the longevity is not an issue, especially for the price.

At first spray it doesn’t really bring to mind mochi or pastries, it’s pear and something else sweet, lactonic and vaguely floral, but after a few minutes I start to smell the sweet mochi dough. It’s a really beautiful and refined interpretation - it’s sweet and starchy but doesn’t read like a typical gourmand. In the “reminds me of” section I see a comparison to J-Scent’s Yawahada, which I also have tried. I definitely smell the notes they have in common, but Yawahada loses me with the inclusion of overbearing grandma’s closet florals that don’t mesh well with the sweet creamy rice and sandalwood imo. Anyways it might have been a mistake to order a decant of this. I’m very into it and it’s unfortunately discontinued and difficult to find. Will keep my eyes open for a suitable dupe in the future.

The first time I smelled this I did not like it, it's veerrryyy different from the normal perfumes I go for. But now I'm almost through my second bottle! It's a very unique sent that I haven't found before, to me it smells very milky and powdery with notes of pear and pistachio. It's still quite airy and perfect for the spring time! I personally don't get the sake that other reviewers have commented. This is one of those perfumes that feel very nostalgic, maybe because I've worn it so much in spring and made memorable memories with it but nonetheless it makes me feel very calm and happy. I really wish zara would still carry this perfume as it is so hard to get my hands on this one nowadays. If you ever get the chance to wear this one, try it it's a special one.

After over a month of thinking about buying this fragrance I finally got it (just before it sold out again...) and let me tell you - this perfume is absolutely phenomenal! It's such a yummy, cozy and comforting scent, one that just feels “fluffy and soft”. It does indeed smell like sweet mochi/rice cake - and with the juicy pear note you get a total masterpiece! The fruitiness is the strongest for the first 1-2 hours and then it mellows out into a creamier, smoother scent. There is also a subtle hit of salt in the background which makes it even prettier and more interesting as it adds some beautiful depth! 10/10! Very unique but it feels like a perfume that was made just for me. I'm obsessed! 💚

To be honest, I wasn't expecting it to be this lovely. It does evoke the feeling of a mochi —a pear mochi—. The pear is very subtle, but sweet and ripe, and the mochi is covered in this fine rice flour that makes them so deliciously soft to the touch. The scent overall reminds me of a beautiful and unique take on baby cologne. I'm gonna be wearing this on days I want to feel clean and cozy and pretty. Edit: This has become one of my favorites. omg. Also, just realized it's by the same perfumer of L'eau papier by Diptyque, which is my absolute fave. love, love, LOVE!! Literally feel like I've stumbled upon a gold mine. PLEASE snag this if you get the chance.

I was lucky enough to grab a bottle when it was on Zara in 2020. It smells exactly like soft pear and mochi and dries down to vanilla. its a cozy scent that sits pretty close to the skin. I wear it to bed often and go to sleep to a soothing mochi scent and wake up to a yummy vanilla. I am down to the last 25% of my 100 ml and I am starting to get worried. I will miss this one. there is nothing like it that I have tried. The closest I can get is Kenzo Amour, also discontinued. ARGH. I wish they would stop cranking out more and more fragrances and keep the ones that are unique and loved like this one.

With the notes and the description that it has, it evokes a feeling of a pear mochi but without it, it smells like baby powder. I loved it at first spray and I’m willing to look past the weak sillage although it sits close to the skin and lasts around 3-4hrs. The rice note stands out to me the most and is a good entry to rice-forward fragrances. This made me more open in trying out more rice perfumes! I got this during the sale and this year’s batch didn’t have the alcohol at first spray. This will most likely come back again given Zara’s record of selling out items and bringing it back.

This is amazing! I didn’t expect much after some comments and after trying the other Zara mochi perfume (kid’s section after all..). But this is so smooth! That strong pear blast in the beginning is quickly paired with sandalwood which is handled here in the best way possible. And i think that rice element is just perfectly backing up those two. While it’s soft, smooth and comforting like a blanket smelling like your favourite person, it gets so addictive because how yummy it is. But beware, it’s not classic gourmand, atleast not a plain and easy one as it could appear. Just love it!

Received this today. First spritz I get cottony pear...vanilla/sandalwoody...?? Underneath I get rice/cereal vibe....and creamy pudding...and also a tad of "savory" that I cannot figure out yet. Goes quickly to skin scent on me..but easy to like this scent...casual everyday scent...hard not to like it. I wish it projected more. Edit: After just receiving Gucci Memoire d'Une Odeur.... I feel that this Zara scent and the Gucci are "related"....not a dupe..just same type/style of scent..IMO...on my skin..to my crazy nose !!!

This is such an odd, but beautiful perfume! It really does somewhat smell savory, savory as in teriyaki sauce savory, if that makes sense. Sweet and savory at the same time. It does resemble japanese rice wine (sake) too. Fortunately the pear adds sweetness to it and blends beautiful with the rice note. I can't detect any sandalwood though. This is a discontinued perfume that you still can buy, but it sells for way too much, so if you can find it for a cheap price then go for it! It isn't really a safe blind buy i'd say.

UGH Zara is terrible for already discontinuing this after bringing it back briefly for two months. This was on clearance on the Canadian website and it's already sold out. Luckily, I was able to get 2 bottles at full price while it was still in stock. I have been wanting this perfume ever since I missed the initial launch, two years ago. It was well worth waiting for. Such a comforting and cozy scent! It lasts and projects on me with 5-6 sprays. I love this!

This fragrance is beautiful but be aware it is changing with time. When I bought it I smelled nice warm creamy comforting mixture of rice and pear. Now, 1 year later, it smells more like sake, more alcoholic and sharper than before. Not as smooth as before. But fragrances can change, it is nothing unusual. I will still wear it, it is very unusual and nice scent.

I LOVEEEE ! as a rice and pear lover this is perfect, I expected it to be a little more gourmand maybe because of the name? it smells like a candy I can't put the name on, it's fresh, almost herbal, so airy and fluffy, absolutely delicious, the lasting is a joke tho, it last a few seconds on my skin..

This. Is. A. Masterpiece. 🤌🏻 It puts me in a very good mood and is also quite calming/comforting. When I smell this, it’s almost as if I can feel the texture of a real rice cake mochi. The pear is juicy and tart. It’s a light, pretty perfume - while being very interesting & unusual at the same time. 🍚

Gorgeous scent! I got it only because I came paired with m6 purchased of A Sweet Pastry in Paris, but this is the real stand out. Its a powdery puff and citrus fluffiness. I like that the rice note feels cold and airy and stops the citrus from feeling like a cleaning agent or air freshner.

somehow I only feel the pear notes, not so much of the mochi/rice/lactonic or sandalwood as others have described. I still like it as it’s sweet and fruity without being too loud. I was expecting more savoury notes but it’s ok anyway as it’s different from what I usually have and wear

It smell like a mochi dough out from the fridge. Have to almost dig a nose into the skin to smell this. Very soft to no projection. For the price I dont care about projection. Calm, a bit cold, lightly sweet powder and relax smell

Love at first sniff! This smells like a boozy pear cocktail, with a milky (the rice note I'm guessing) dry down. I really wish this lasted longer because I can't get enough! So happy I found a bottle on Mercari.

I am so happy that this unique perfume has been produced again. Thank you Zara. I wish it was more permanent.

This is sooo cozy! I love it so much

The opening of this is a lot of fun and is my favourite part! It really does smell like sake, not just perfumer’s alcohol. There's a pear note, which is done far better than Zara's usual pear attempts. The rice is sticky but not sweet, and the drydown becomes a musky, sticky rice scent. It’s not lactonic or vanilla to my nose. This doesn’t quite align with my maximalist perfumes or personality, but I’d wear it anyway. I can't though, I have problems with a lot of pear accords, and this one also gives me a headache. And the fact that it gives me a headache and I still like it? I think that says a lot. Sillage and projection are on the low/moderate side for me, but the longevity is better – I get about five hours and it's hard to scrub off in the shower. I picture this on someone with a minimalist apartment in the not-yet-over-gentrified (but still expensive) part of town. Their perfume shelf features Diptyque, Vilhelm, and Le Labo. They wear monochromes from Cos and make an excellent cacio e pepe. There’s a tomato leaf candle burning in their immaculately clean kitchen.

This smells just like the notes of pear, rice and sandalwood suggest, with an additional dash of white musk. It's a soft, delicate gourmand that sits very close to the skin, but the longevity is actually not bad. I have the 10 ml rollerball, maybe it projects a little more when you use a spray, but I doubt that it'll make a big difference. I like this a lot. It's warm, creamy, cozy, a little sweet but not cloying. The rice note and the general softness of the scent are really fitting to the name. It's not as evocative of Tokyo as for example Margiela's Tea Escape, but for a fraction of the price I can't complain. It does remind me of mochis. This is also one of the rare Zara perfumes that neither tries to emulate a designer fragrance, nor smells like a random drugstore scent. Would I buy a 100 ml bottle? No. I wish they made a 30 ml as a middle ground between the large one and the rollerball, which I got as a gift from my husband. I'm not a huge fan of rollerballs, but I'll put it into my purse for the rare cases when I forget to put on perfume at home.

I have the rollerball so it may have a different performance compared to the 100mL version. It actually stayed on for quite some time for me. I put it on around 10:30AM and I could still smell it on my wrists when I was taking a shower at midnight. It has a very soft sillage though, really only staying close to skin. But I was able to get whiffs of it all day, especially during the first 5 hours. It's tough to describe this scent because although it does smell unique in its own way, it doesn't seem too intriguing. I say that because when I first smelled this I thought of baby powder, like a pear scented baby powder. I also asked a coworker of mine what it smelled like & he said lotion. It just smells a little average, nothing too show stopping but just enough to notice it. It's fresh, powdery & soft. It's a very simplistic perfume. Great lasting power on me though. 7.5/10

Another successful blind by from this Zara range. This is so relaxing and cozy but also very elegant at the same time. This is very powdery to me, because of the rice note, and I said this in my most recent review of another fragrance, but this powdery and classy smell reminds me of something that a celebrity like Marilyn Monroe would wear. Its very sweet and likeable but there is a powdery and almost vintage vibe to it. Its fluffy and sweet from the rice and pear but the woody sandalwood really grounds it into the cozy feminine smell that I get from it. Very glad that I picked this up. The lasting power is also very nice on me; I get about 5 hours until it starts to sit very close to the skin and I have to respray. And I agree with those below that this also lasts lifetimes on clothing.

Tested in store on skin and on a tester card. Huge blast of beautiful juicy pear in the opening. Very similar pear note to the opening of Ariana Grande God Is A Woman. The pear lasts a lot longer than I expected, but the fragrance settles into a skin scent after about an hour, and within 2-3 hours it’s fully a skin scent that doesn’t radiant at all on me. I can smell the sandalwood a touch. Disappointed to not pick up the ricey mochi note that other people are smelling. No lactonic milkiness either. Doesn’t last much better on fabric than on skin unfortunately. Doesn’t project enough or last long enough to justify owning a bottle worthy for me unfortunately.

Sweet and boozy at the beginning, maybe its just the strong alcohol in the spray bottle though. After that, rice and sandal really shows. I think it's really nice and has a niche quality though, if youre into this specific mochi vibe then it could be great for you, especially i think it could fit nicely to a cosy winter evening. But I'm not getting it, sure it's nice but just not my vibe totally. If this whole thing was combined with matcha also then id consider getting it. Also I have rose gourmand nectar which there is some similar vibes although cant quite put my finger on it.

There were only a few bottles left at my nearest Zara and they were half the price, so I gave in and blind bought one. It really is a very different scent and you can't beat the 100ml for €7,99 value. Longevity doesn't seem to be the best but that's fine. It's a very soft and airy, almost savory rice note, with a faint pear as well. I don't have anything similar at all in my collection so I'm glad I went for it. I wouldn't necessarily wear it though because it's not my style, but I like it as a room scent.

Feminine, extremely comforting, instantly refreshing and clean. There is something nostalgic about this one for me... This opens on my skin with a crisp, tart, soap-like pear and gets more soapy as it develops on my skin... after about an hour 'Mochi Atelier in Tokyo' becomes softly-powdery rice pudding with a creamy, woody undertone that is just so addicting to smell. It's not complex, nor does it try to be...however it's one of those scents that is just so easy to wear during the day.

Reminded me of L'erbolario Legni Fruttati, but this is much better, less fruity. When i think of woody aromatic, the first thought is elegance to me. This is a playful fragrance, and very polite. I like the simplicity, and yet it is different. A gourmet note yes...but as if I was not sure if it was just an illusion. Well done :) Edit/ staying power good on me, juicy with a hint of fresh floral, like peony...smells nice

The first spray is simply sake, a kind of alcohol in Japan. Well, pear note often does this trick to fragrances since it creates an atmosphere of light booziness. Then it soon settles to a synthetic smell like the dessert mochi. Arielle shoshana did a lot better on mochi scent than Zara since it doesn't have that synthetic smell. But thinking about the price, Zara still did a good job on this one

This starts with a blast of sweet green pear, so much so that I was worried that it would be too fruity for me. But pretty soon the marshmallow-y yet savory rice note comes forward and tampers down the pear. From there it doesn’t really develop. But I don’t mind because it’s quite pleasant. It reminds me a bit of Genmaicha from rag and bone, even though there’s no matcha not listed.

I was bombarded by the pear at the beginning, but it went away pretty soon. Then there came the sandalwood and the rice-like scent became more prominent, with some musky scent. The middle was painful to me. But after 30mins, I started to like it, sandalwood became a soft background, the rice was more sound and blended with the musky scent.

Did a recent haul of Zara fragrances. This was definitely one of my favourites, opens with a sweet pear, then moves into this milky rice scent that is really pleasant on my skin. I really like the smell, a fruity gourmand sort of intimate fragrance. I just wish it had longevity.

I blind bought this on sale at $13 CAD for 100ml - what a steal! There aren’t a lot of complicated notes in this, but sometimes you just need something subtle, uncomplicated, and comforting. It’s something you can wear year-round, around the house or to the office.

Smells just like red bean paste mochi. A gourmand you can overspray because the rice note prevent it from being cloying. Already gone from the shelves :(

Whenever I smell this I just think "ethereal". So beautiful, light, airy, fluffy also. I cannot wait to wear in it colder weather.

(Some) Zara fragrances get a lot of buzz on perfume sites, but although I love a good cheap perfume I’ve never bothered with them: their line-up seems to change so often it’s exhausting just to imagine trying to keep up with it, just about every five minutes. And when I did occasionally sniff a few of the fragrances in a store from nothing’s really stood out to me, although I agree they’re definitely nice for their price. And now that chance has put a sample of this Mochi Atelier In Tokyo into my hand and I’ve given it some days’ wear, that impression is confirmed: this is nice...for the price. That sounds a little “damning by faint praise”, and I suppose it is, but I do like it. The reviewer who called this an intimate, fruity gourmand below was spot-on, I think. I get sweet rice and a pleasantly synthetic pear note, rather warm and soft and sweet, but not too much. I can’t comment on the likeness to real mochi, but I buy it! Very nice, but not exactly my thing, and not exceptional enough to make me want more despite that. Which is a good thing, because just as I thought, it’s gone from the website already, confirming my prejudice that it’s futile to test these at all - unless you’re on a budget, are quick on the uptake, and can live with the fact that one bottle is going to have to last you a lifetime since it’s unlikely you’ll get a chance to repurchase.

It's delicate and sweet, you can definitely smell both the pear and the rice, but it's way too faint even for summer weather. Reminds me of eau papier a little bit, in both you get that not-so-obvious sweetness and 'clean'/'powdery' undertone. One of those scents which could rule your soul for 10 minutes after spraying and disappear without any trace leaving you confused. I understand the appeal, but cannot feel it by heart.

Today got my Mochi, it’s so light , pear disapears in some minutes , then powdery sweet air, can not feel much .First I got sweet pastry in Paris( from this series) that’s really good / long lasting vanilla/ citrus tarte ,love it, and hopes for mochi was high....

Smells like baby wipes to me. Not sure what brand, but a very specific brand I remember buying. I don't hate it, but I don't love it. I have a sample of Dirty Rice by BTSO and I find them to be very, very similar.

I wanted to adore this scent. I love all the notes! But gosh, I could only smell it WHILE spraying it. There is no scent bubble whatsoever, even with over spraying let alone longevity. Nada

A light pear and a dusty floral that sits so close to the skin and it's barely noticeable but sweet in it's innocence.

I have this perfume in 10 ml. It lasts less than two hours and has a very mild intensity. This perfume comes out with an alcohol aroma, a lot of alcohol, they say it is because it comes out with the olfactory sensation of sake, but those who do not know that liquor will feel an alcohol aroma. On the way out, when you get the first sensation of alcohol to pass, a very soft sweet smell remains, the sweet aroma could be that of sorrow, or a very soft vanilla or light flowers, but we return to the same aromas by sticking our nose to the skin because it is sooo soft. There are people who feel the part of the sandalwood, but it must be said that if you felt it you would feel it at the bottom of the perfume, but since it is so so so soft, by the time we get to the bottom of the perfume you won't feel it. There are people who approach this perfume as an olfactory experience within zara perfumes, that I can understand these concepts well in niche perfumery, buying a perfume so that it gives you certain sensations, olfactory experiences regardless of whether you use the perfume or not. But ... tell that to a grandfather who visits the Zara store and wants a perfume for daily use, tell that to a person who cannot afford a Dior, a Chanel and spends 15 euros on a perfume for daily use and You have to explain that it smells like alcohol, I'm sorry, sake. But nothing happens because the olfactory experience will last two hours. And if it is very soft it is because in Japanese culture they like very soft aromas, it does not matter that we all have to leave the house with masks and try to look for intense aromas to be able to smell ourselves, no, the Japanese like subtle aromas and this experience gives you that, well let's explain all this to consumers of cheap perfumes.

I am far away from being a perfume snob, but I was always very skeptical about Zara fragrances, although they are quite praised for what they're offering. So finally I gave in and bought a 100ml Mochi for around 12€. I love mochi, the straightforward pyramid seemed safe and the reviews were not that bad. What could go wrong, right? Well, EVERYTHING. To me, this perfume has nothing to do with mochi. Mochi is a smooth, moderately sweet, powdery, sticky dessert. I can't read any of these experiences in this "fragrance". I can't smell the pear either. It is an alcoholy mess in the opening, which some describe it a "sake" note. Well no, to me, it is just rubbing alcohol. Then it dries down to a very chemical artificial smelling sandalwood which is sooo headache-inducing. I can't imagine how I could wear this in the summer heat. I am so sorry if am hurting anyone's feelings in here, but fragrances are very individual experiences as we know and I was just unlucky this time. I really really wanted to like this, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it.

"A Mochi Atelier in Tokyo" opens up very gourmand--the pear note is a cold, sweet juicy one! But then the powdery sandalwood that comes in is very strange--it actually reminds me of BRUT, the men's cologne. It's a little musty. The juicy pear top notes tone down quite quickly, and it continues to smell like BRUT, but with some sweet powdery-ness on top. On occasion I can smell a little bit of melon-like/rice like quality which I get from eating Mochi. I thought I would love this, since I love Tea Escape by Margiela which is made by the same perfumer, but I didn't like it enough to purchase. I think it's an interesting perfume, but not one that I would like to smell like. It sits close to the skin and is quite soft. I tested this on a test strip of paper only. The upside to this perfume is that it's quite unique. ps. If your local Zara store does not have testers due to COVID restrictions, you may be able to ask the sales people to test it out for you, they might have them in the back!
