Tonka Wood

I am in love with this one! Around Christmas, I came across Byredo's Bal d'Afrique in Paris. While I loved it at the time, €150 for an impulse buy was a bit steep. When I read on fragrantica this is basically the cheaper copy, I went ahead blind bought one of Zara's website. I wasn't sure what to expect, as I've had some hits and misses with Zara perfumes in the past, but the Home collection was new to me. Tonka Wood smells like a summer morning, when you're wrapped in warm sheets, and a ray of sunlight hits the bed. There is a very slight men's perfume scent to it, but it is not too masculine for a woman to wear. It reminds me of the faint mix of aftershave and deodorant on your boyfriend's shirt he wore yesterday. The praline and vetiver definitely come through, but in a zingy, non-sweet way. As I am typing this, I definitely get a hint of warm mandarines or tangerines, but maybe that is the lily-of-the-valley? Tonka Wood smells warm and deep, and would be most suited for the evenings or colder seasons. I get a very vintage vibe from it, it wouldn't be out of place in a library, a living room with leather club seats. It is elegant and refined, and smells far more expensive than it actually is. If you are hesitating or curious I can highly recommend buying Tonka Wood.

GOD BLESS whoever posted on here that this is the exact copy of Bal D'Afrique by Byredo. If it wasn't for all these experts saying there is a slight difference, I wouldn't be able to tell them apart. Honestly this is just divine and to me it smell exactly like my beloved Bal D'Afrique by Byredo but the price was 25.90$ Canadian dollars, free shipping and it was delivered in 2 days. Bal D'Afrique by Byredo is over 300$ Canadian dollars. My new signature. I don't even care to smell like anything else in my life. edit: literally the day I received it it got discontinued. I am asking everyone I know around the world to stock up for me in Italy Russia and France. edit2: just got another 4 bottles and currently selling the rest of my perfumes. I am simply obsessed with this. edit 3: it is not discontinued, it was on sale for the holidays. Anyways, I already have a lot of bottles, enough for a few years until I get rich and start buying Byredo.

It had been said already and I am here to confirm it: I had the chance to test Bal D'Afrique yesterday for the first time and I have to admit that it is absolutely identical to Tonka Wood. The differences are close to zero and the funny thing is that Tonka Wood performs even better. Longevity is close to 6-7 hours, while projection stays strong for 3-4 hours before turning to a skin scent. I was always sceptical about Zara perfumes but this one seems to be an exception - even the perfumer is the same! So lucky I got this gem for just 7,99 euro. No idea why Zara Home decided to discontinue this one. Gahhhh I’m so bummed that this was discontinued. I bought a decant just because I was so curious about a possible Bal d’Afrique dupe, which is one of my all time favorites. I knew I was in for disappointment either way but I couldn’t help myself! Turns out I find this to be a great dupe...I did a side by side comparison and found BDA to be a little more light and delicate. Tonka Wood is just a bit deeper and more intense, with more staying power. But the two are basically identical apart from that! Absolutely delicious, addictive and mood-lifting. Wish I’d known about it before it went out of production....

This is a seriously beautiful perfume and it is EVEN better than the Byredo. I smell tart fruits softened by a pastille like soapy violet, dry vetiver and smoothness from the tonka. I don't really smell any praline, but hey, it probably melds well with the tonka. It is not easy to make perfumes that are both really fresh and smooth and warm at the same time, but here they managed. It also lasts and stays the same after the freshness in the beginning. Opening more "male" if you wish and later it gets more feminine. I keep on getting whiffs all day long from this! Compliment getter for sure.

Tonka Wood, Evitorial Twist and Absolutely Sublime are now discontinued. They will only keep the other 3 of the line. Remaining stock went down to 7,99E from 35,99E and soon they will be gone forever. It's a pity because they are really nice and quite cheap.

My favorite fragrance from Zara Home line. Is very seductive and smooth. Unisex leaning slightly to feminine side, IMO. Is reminds me of Byredo Bal D'Afrique and Pal Zileri Viaggio D'Africa, especially in the dry down. Medium performances on my skin.

for the price its an excellent shadow of BDA by Byredo, its more citrusy and watery, performance is average but for the price its so good, esp bottle,presentation and metallic cap are nice,i hear its discontinued, its a shame. 8/10

arguably the best perfume ever released by ZARA. The smell is so good in between Byredo Bal d'Afrique and Aterlier Cologne Vetiver Fatal. They need to rerelease it soon. Good longevity too. 5/5

Bal d'Afrique (Byredo) has an EDT/EDC flanker with Tonka Wood by Zara Home. The perfumist is even the same. Fruity, sweet, fruity & floral. Very good, nice presentation and not expensive :-)

I love Bal D'Afrique, but it doesn't last on my skin at all, and for 150€ is too much for such weak performance. I was looking for another scent similar, like Atelier Cologne Vetiver Fatale and Amyris from MFK (not similar but same style) then I heard this was similar and only 30€ for 100ml, I went to a Zara Home store and yup, pretty much Bal D'Afrique, bought it in the spot, I have a sample of that one and will try them side by side, from memory they are not exactly the same but pretty close. Zara Home Tonka Wood is just lovely, the only downside it's the performance, like the Byredo one, not very long but i don't care for this price. Will test this one further in summer and update the review.

As many others have already said, this is a dead ringer for another Jérôme Epinette fragrance, Bal d'Afrique (Byredo). The price difference is obscene when these are virtually identical compositions. All this being said, I have two bottles of TW and rarely wear it. For me, Absolutely Sublime was the standout from this collection, with TW in distant second place.

I happen to own this and Zara Man Gold, and it smells really similar, probably because of the praline and tonka notes. However, I cannot judge which one lasts longer but I can tell Tonka Wood smells slightly milder and warmer than Man Gold.

Meh. To my nose, smells like a nice woody shaving cream. Would smell cozy in a man, not sexy, just cozy. I cannot wear it as I just think of shaving cream.

This is not a review for this product but a heads up on Zara Home scents unlisted here. In general, to be very honest, their home fragrances seem better formulated and more consistent than their other fragrances. Palo Santo is one of their best selling candles in my region, but be warned if you dislike sage because the sage in it only comes out after burning. My top favorite Zara Home Scents would be: Into the Woods, Iris, and Mimosa. Gingerbread is also a good scent in the best diffuser bottle design out of all their scents but it reminds me so much of Dragon's Blood incense by Wild berry that I simply couldn't justify to myself buying it. ------ Be warned, most of their candles smell like sage when burnt and I have yet to try my favorite Zara Home scents in diffuser form but it doesn't look all too promising as the reed diffusers in the store don't have much projection. I tried mimosa sublime, the car freshener edition, and it has no projection whatsoever. I'm holding out on my thumbs for until I try the Artemisia diffuser at least. ----- Into the woods lit smells of olibanum and hints of subtle firewood.

Zara continues its strategy of copying popular fragrances for their own lineup, which seems to serve them pretty well. Here they even got the original perfumer, Jerome Epinette, and told him to (by)redo his best-selling Bal d'Afrique on the cheap. Tonka Wood is less fruity and features a prominent tonka note that's absent from Bal, but overall I'd say they're 75% the same. Due to its shoestring formula budget, Tonka Wood can't help but smell cheaply synthetic, and longevity is lacking - but considering the price, you can't complain.

I think I need more time to process this. I have wore it twice and I felt it completely different but never did I feel it as a vetiver based fragrance. I also think this is extremely well blended and maybe this is the reason I cannot point out any clearly dominant note. It has a sweet side and a clean side definitely and I find it very pleasant but I am still unable to say if this is just one of the crowd or true genius. ? /10

Stock up while you can beautiful fragrance never smelled the byredo but this is simply stunningly good quality. I've stocked up with 5 bottles would hate not to have it in my collection. Also nice are absolutely sublime and evitorial twist.

Lol I can't believe this was in the bargain bin a few years ago at zara home stores... Simply beautiful fragrance in the summer months or really shines in the heat....

So glad I stocked up with this beauty... Seemed crazy at the time buying so many backup bottles... Dam I'm glad I did.... I save this beauty for the summer months..

Most proeminent notes on me: definitely tonka, vetiver and praline. A little bit fresh with the lemon. Definitely the same vibe as Angel Muse.

Besically, Jerome Epinette, who's also the nose behind Byredo's Bal d'Afrique, was asked by Zara to make nearly identical scent

Yesterday i smell this in a Zara Home and for me smell líke Ambre Narguille in the drydown.
