Beaver Maple Edition

What a surprise this one turns out to be! I got a sample of it with my last order and while I was curious, I wasn't expecting this to blow me away, to be honest. I wasn't a fan of the two previous iterations, one was too clean and the other too harsh, too smoky/wet, they were curiosities but unwearable for me. This new one, however...! Brilliant work from the perfumer. Those familiar with the previous version will be taken aback perhaps. This is quite different from either versions. I only find slight wafts of the 2016 version in the mid but that's about it. This Maple Edition is immediately sweet and very earthy to me. The best way to describe this right off the bat I find is maple glazed carrots. That's what I get from the opening and then it blooms. Florals come in and freshen it. Oddly enough, I don't dig neroli usually but here it fits very well. I also find that similar watery lily note from Dragonfly (which I love). Later on, it gets deeper, leathery like which is funny since there's no leather here (I'm guessing it's the "castoreum reconstruction" at play). I also get resins and the whole takes a turn for a spicy floral aquatic but with an earthy tinge. I can see how some would be turned off with it and I do pick up this "curry" vibe someone already mentioned. It lasts surprisingly long (a good 8+ hours on me), which some will appreciate. I need to give it a few more day-long wears to really be able to break it down more in-depth but from the initial full wear, this is very pleasant. It's not going to be for everyone but I was told it smells surprisingly sweet in the air and "yummy" (citing a colleague at work, haha). It's warm one though. I'm not sure this will fit late spring, much less summer. If you like forest-like scents but not bitter harsh greenery, this might be worth a sniff for you. Bonus points for the ultra cute Mountie beaver character, it does bring out a slight patriotic fiber in my Canadian self!

Ordered 10 samples from Zoologist and this was the one I decided to wear first. It was super sweet at initially, which I don't mind at all, but after a few hours the maple note as I interpret it as an Ohio girl with a beautiful old Red Maple right outside my bedroom window... it's wet fallen maple leaves on a misty autumn day crushed under foot. Imagine diving into a big pile of leaves in the fall, you close you eyes and inhale- funky moldy sweet leaves. I love this. I pick up on the watery qualities of this but for me it's that earthy dampness. Like I'm working in the yard raking leaves, and I have mud all over my shoes, mingling with the house next door's fabric softener smell coming out of their dryer vent. So far no headache, will update as needed!

I've done a fair bit of work out in the forests of Ohio where we have loads of maples and this feels like a nearly photorealistic scent portrayal of being immersed in a dense damp canopy of maple foliage with some added burnt syrup sweetness and a kind of camphoric wet fur musk. I'd absolutely go for a full bottle if my wallet made accommodations for such things. I think of nothing human when i smell this, it is the odor of a thick forested thicket, a marsh in the deep wilderness, right on the cusp of spring a snow is melting. perfect for fall but really any season besides summer maybe, evening wear for sure.

I found the opening to be very sweet, almost cloying enough to garner concern. But it eventually dried down into an earthy, compelling scent. I definitely smell the carrot in this, think a crisp, cold, earthy carrot just ready to be bitten into. But that’s merely in the background of the fantastic woodsy and earthy notes going on. Definitely a little more masculine than I expected, but it’s undoubtedly a fantastic unisex scent. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Beaver Maple Edition Zoologist Perfumes 10/10 Definitely a gourmand to me. Smells just like maple syrup, sweet and rich, but with a woody base that gives it some depth and keeps it from being too simple. It actually reminds me of that maple syrup snack from Lidl in the best way. One of my favorites from Zoologist for sure. I really recommend it if you’re into sweet, cozy scents.

I didn’t get a gourmand vibe out of this at all. What I get is a beautiful rendition of maple wood. Yes, it’s kinda like the maple syrup except that it’s not syrupy but more woody and balsamy type. I love the way this reminds me of the cold Canadian weather. I don’t know how it’s done, possibly the patchouli and balsam combo perhaps? But however it was done, I love it.

Ah, for a pastry maniac like myself, this is a perfume after my own heart - but far too rich for my blood. This perfume reminds me of the Lidl's braided maple/pecan pastry, and I am here for it.

The bottle seen here is going to be the permanent bottle moving forward. Victor himself labeled every bottle by hand and he said it was becoming too physically taxing. He said this new round bottle can be put in a labeling machine and it’ll speed up production on top of being less intensive for one person to do. This is his full statement from Reddit: “Hello, this is Victor, founder of Zoologist. I have been applying the bottle labels all by myself since the beginning and no one else could do that the way I want. As the business grows, I work till very late everyday affixing the labels and it's affecting my eyesight and back. So three years ago I began looking for a solution and decided to go for the round bottle, so that I could use a labelling machine to put on the labels. The bottle is designed by Jules Dinand and Pierre Dinand, whom I admire. It's a bit unusual looking, but I think that's the charm (to me). During Covid, the bottle maker in Spain decided to stop producing bottles for Zoologist and I had a tough time finding a new bottle manufacturer, but eventually I found one and they had been supplying bottles without any problem. It's also true that the round bottle could speed up production time because I was the bottleneck.” While I do really like the old bottles I can understand this choice

Wow! This is the most Beaver-y out of all three formulations this fragrance has gone through. The first one was a bit on the ashy, grey side. The 2016 one focused more on its fresh, wetland habitat. This one is reminiscent of a fantasy: what a beaver's lodge in a cartoon might smell like. The maple accord smells absolutely gorgeous, and I do pick up more than just a bland sweetness. The vanilla and cocoa smell quite edible, making this formulation a gourmand: it will satisfy your sweet craving for sure. The fresher notes (blue water lily, carrot, vetiver) also play quite a part. On their own, they remind me a tiny bit of Aqua Motu by Comptoir Pacifique. This is surprisingly wearable! Does not smell like a designer fragrance, but has enough softness and sweetness to not come off too peculiar, unlike some other Zoologist releases. I'm quite impressed! I have not been a fan of most releases since 2020 (except Cow, Penguin and Rabbit). Zoologist has the tough task to match quirkiness, refinement and wearability to stay on brand and still make profit, and I feel like this one really succeeds at that.

I didn't really get the maple to come out until several hours after application. It opened with a very outdoorsy smell, with the vanilla sort of hanging over it. The patchouli stood out but that might just be because my family seems to be pretty sensitive to it, and I usually don't like it but it was subtle enough that it worked for me. The vanilla isn't super sweet or strong like an extract, it was more like taking a whiff of a cake after its cooled and you're about to frost it. It dries down to a pretty subtle scent and is slightly sweet but very woodsy, and leaned more masculine, but after a few hours the maple came out strongly. It wasn't a super sweet maple like straight out of the bottle syrup but more like if you've smoked something with maple wood.

The first spray is potent. Radiates well. My wife commented across the room. It was too sweet for her. If it is too sweet for her, it would normally be too sweet for me. However, this time we differ. I think the woods held back the sweetness enough for it to be wearable. The maple is almost throughout. A bit powdery and some balsam. Nice vanilla in the end but not overpowering. I like it but would not wear it often. Much better performance from this compared to my last two samples from Zoologist. I had about 7+ on skin and a couple of hours more (at least) on clothes. I am sure this profile will fit many. Happy hunting.

If you know the original Beaver don’t let the name fool you, this is a completely different perfume. Wet fur and aquatic notes are replaced with maple syrup. The first whiff smells almost like fenugreek leaves and I was afraid I would smell like curry all day. Thankfully, it mellowed out quite quickly and I was enveloped in an amber-maple, sweet golden aura. I don’t really detect that strong castoreum undertone mentioned in other reviews, the main association for me is with the maple trees and Canada. Overall, a nice scent, but the old Beaver did a much better job at evoking the animal and its habitat.

This opens very sweet with a clear maple syrup note, which initially feels gloriously warm and comforting rather than candy-like. As it develops, the sweetness blends with soft woods and evolves into a gorgeously gentle, grown-up gourmand. Unfortunately, in the dry down a very faint but noticeable dirty back come through (and this is definitely a 'my skin reaction' thing, not a fragrance fault) so it has to be a reluctant eventual pass for me. Absolutely worth sampling if you enjoy soft, woody gourmands, but please note, this one is skin chemistry sensitive.

syrupy sweet maple with dry woods and a watery, fresh undertone from the florals and carrot. I do find the patchouli to be a bit much for my tastes as it adds a dry dusty touch in the dry down, and the animalic notes here do read slightly like a dirty lumberjack, but I think it works for the vibe. This is very different from the original but I find them both to nail the rustic and aquatic scent profile they both are going for, with this one much sweeter, woodier, and even slightly smoky. Enjoyable, just wish it was less animalic/dusty

On my skin, first impression is “This smells like instant grilled chicken satay with rose, iykyk”. Beaver is a deep smoky, balsamic, woody mossy, fragrance. I get notes of smoke, freshness from lemongrass and oranges at the top, amber at the heart and a touch of marine / aquatic in the base. Admittedly I’ve probably never had genuine maple syrup my whole life, but i do not get sweetness from this. On first application... oh my god pure maple syrup. I'm definitely getting a slight woody and musky undertone and a bit of vanilla, but the maple is overwhelming and far too sweet to my nose. It became a little less harsh upon drying down and I could smell some florals. I won't be getting a full size but my partner loves it lol.

This was more interesting than I was led to believe. I was expecting “pure maple syrup” based on many people’s reviews. This is much woodier, slightly smoky, a touchy earthy, and almost sweatier than I was anticipating. It has a touch of maple syrup, but it’s not sweet or gourmand. I like it... I think?

Wrapped in the aura of early autumn. Dessert-like maple syrup rests against a light smoky note of burning leaves, all enveloped in a delicate harvest aura and the earth's gentle sweetness. A reflection on the slow transition from the abundance of summer toward the more subdued tones of fall.

sweet vanilla maper syrup. has some wood in the background. also has this vintage smell i cant really describe. dry down is just a vanilla and woody fragrance. reminds me of by the fireplace third zoologist sample and its my favorite so far 7.3/10

not sure if i could pull this off, but i think it is a great scent. very mature, deep, and complex. the opening was warm, sweet, maple bourbon and the drydown was addicting. I loved this on my boyfriend!

A unique and interesting mix between a gourmand and green scent. I do very much like Beaver maple, and amongst the 9 zoologist fragrances I sampled, this one instantly stood out both to me, and my family. It’s certainly unique, mass appealing, and versatile. This fragrance does not change very much, and maybe only becomes slightly more smoky as it dries down, however all the way through this is a very consistent maple syrup accord, and a smoky woodiness underneath. Only 30 or so minutes after this is sprayed, some of the syrupy sweetness fades, it’s still sweet and obviously a maple syrup scent, however it is not as overtly sweet. I describe this as a mix between a gourmand and a green fragrance because this reminds me of not only sweet maple syrup that is drizzled on pancakes, but also of the stereotypical beaver landscape and environment. Unlike other zoologist scents that seem to be very vivid and descriptive in their imagery, beaver seems like it is painting the caricature of a beavers environment instead of the real environment. It’s not a bad thing, as I like the picture that is painted by this. In addition to the sweet, breakfast maple syrup that is so prevalent in this fragrance, I also feel transported to a New England or southern Canadian forest. The maple trees have begun their shift to autumn, and the canopy as well as forest floor is covered in bright orange and yellow leaves. You’re going for an afternoon hike, and stumble across a meandering stream in which a couple of beavers are swimming. It’s a very pleasant scene that I am constantly reminded of while wearing. However I do have one major gripe with this scent. For some odd reason, whenever I wear this I begin to feel somewhat sick. Not the stereotypical head ache or nausea inducing sickness that is usually associated with fragrance. Instead my throat goes dry, and I feel like the beginnings of particularly brutal bout of strep throat is coming for me. I thought about this strange phenomenon, and I’ve decided it’s due to the lack of syrupy sweetness in the drydown. While there is a distinct sweetness throughout the entire fragrance, the drydown focuses more on smokiness and woodiness. The sweet vanilla maple accords become hollow, as if the “maple syrup” has been diluted substantially with water, and now hardly tastes like actual syrup, and instead nastily flavored water. I’m not sure why this makes my throat dry, but it is very unpleasant to me. I only began to feel this way after several days of wearing it in a row, but now I can’t wear this for more than an hour without this strange feeling. It makes the fragrance somewhat unwearable for me, however I doubt this will be an issue for anyone else. This fragrance is very good in every other regard however, I think that it could be used by anyone, man or woman. It is also very long lasting, in fact it had the best performance of any zoologist sample I have tried. I get around 6-7 hours of projection, and very strong silage for the majority of the way through. I also think it’s good for nearly year round, and I could see this being used for basically any weather other than hot summer days. Overall I liked this, but due to my particular disagreements with the drydown I will not be buying this. However I would love to smell it on someone else.

First impression (on skin): Sweet, autumny, warm, cozy, woody, candied, sticky, syrupy, gourmand, slightly flowery My immediate thoughts upon application are autumn - a mix of sticky-sweet and woody that gives it a cozy, warm vibe - but I personally would put this under the gourmand category rather than woody as it’s quite rich with the maple syrup note, to the point where it feels a little overpowering. I can pick up some smoky, mature scents underneath that give it that little more depth, but any flowery notes seem fainter and get lost on me. I don’t think it captures the realism of an earthy, animalic or damp scent that I’d expect from a beaver’s habitat. As stated in another review - I agree that it’s more like a painting or caricature of their environment, or perhaps a stereotype. It’s nice, but not realistic. It almost makes me think of standing in a Canadian pastry shop of some sort, watching the beavers by a window from inside, rather than being close to them. I think this would be a more ‘acceptable’ perfume to wear in public, if that makes sense. I think it would be too much during warm months, but it’s pleasant for autumn and winter! The dry down is more subtle and less sweet, perhaps leaning slightly masculine but not overly-so. I’d still say it’s a good unisex perfume. Personally, I don’t think I’d buy a full bottle of this as I found the maple a little overpowering. I never smelled the original, and given the polarizing reviews about its intense animalic reek, I imagined it was kinda wonderful and exactly my vibe. I feared this one would be completely neutered, but it happily opens with a slimy and woody stench. I've been wearing it less than 10 minutes, but all the top, heart, and bass notes are evident from the beginning. The sweetness of the maple keeps it from being an "I hate the world" kind of fragrance, but so far, it's quite bold, and a good, funky smell. Thirty minutes in, it's still very maple, wood pulp, and some-kinda castoreum. The maple isn't sickly sweet, but it's very present. I don't need the maple note nor dislike it, but so far, it's what's holding the fragrance together. An hour in, it still has some animalic sharpness, and the maple abides, but the patchouli and vanilla/sandalwood base is opening up, making it quite "cozy" per the marketing. This smells good, but as expected, I think I would have preferred the animalic assault of the original. A few hours in, it's a quieter version of itself, innocuous. The base notes dominate, making it mostly gourmand. It nets out as an interesting but ultimately safe scent after the funky opening resolves. Not bad but not my vibe.

Beaver feels like a stereotypical Canadian scent from an outsider's perspective. Similar to Chipmunk, but much sweeter with much less wood. That's odd, considering beavers spend their lives chopping trees and living in rivers. Perhaps a damp, dark wood note could have added some character to the scent, the fragrance leans heavily into sweetness instead. Surprisingly a unisex gourmand, It has a prominent maple syrup note, reminiscent of pancakes or waffles, albeit with a boozy twist rather than a doughy base. Yeah, it's pretty much a maple booze. It's warm, rich, and cozy, but light. hazelnutty, rummy, and almost like maple syrup clinging to someone's beard hairs. Its longevity disappoints me. It starts off radiant and I feel like I smell yummy, I feel like others can smell it too, however within only 3 to 4 hours, that goes away and it's an intimate skin scent. It ultimately feels like an attempt to capture a cliché and cartoonish Canadian in a bottle. Take that as you will. Maybe because I have no memory attachment to maple, it's not connecting with me? I wish they would keep the old version and their maple version, similar to how macaque has two versions available.

Smells like a hangover, but it's a hangover I'd intentionally orchestrate for myself. To be specific, it's the morning after a heavy night on the town in Ubud, Bali. It's the wet season. I'm ordering a vanilla caramel iced-mocha frappe latte from a waffle shack on the outskirts of the Monkey Forrest. There's the smell of the street dogs' wet fur mingled with the ever-present wafts of ceremonial incense and the cloying weight of distant raw sewage. On the way into the forest I stop by a gift shop selling leather goods and simian phalluses carved from local wood. I have a headache and I feel nauseous, but it's an exquisite pain, punctuated by the promise of better things to come. I still prefer the most recent iteration of Beaver, but last night (a very humid evening) I layered my Zoologist Maple Beaver sample with Bvlgari Aqva Marine pour Homme (a seaweed/Iso E Super-heavy marine fragrance) and I was transported straight to holiday heaven. If you're on an ultra-tight budget, I imagine Maple Beaver may also be surprisingly lovely layered with your own farts. Not a crowd-pleaser, but certainly satisfying.

A quite beautiful scent. Maple and vanilla dominates, and makes a sweet and tasty. It's also got some notes i'm not familiar with. Water lily and cocoa shells are notes i have little to no experience with in any form. It's a nice fragrance, but not quite my style. A pure gourmand fragrance with a very nice scent. Where: Casual. Anytime you wanna get cozy with someone, this is sure to make some kind of impression. Probably of the good kind.When: Fall, winter, and probably spring as well. This is a sweet fragrance gourmand, and the "feel/vibe" i get is very "breakfast in autumn" specific. Day or night. Who: Anyone who enjoys the idea of sweet maple and vanilla. Any age, any gender. Personal score: 6/10. It's definitely an attractive scent. But wearability is average at best, and i don't ever wear pure sweet gourmand fragrances. For what it is though, it's lovely.

The scent was pleasant, but it didn't evoke beavers or their habitat for me. When I think of a beaver's riverside environment, moist vetiver comes to mind firstt, yet I could hardly detect it in this fragrance, so I feel it would have been better with a higher vetiver conten. I think this perfume suits the autumn season, and perhaps because the maple notte stands out strongly, it feels closer to a gourmand than a woody fragrance.

I wanted to like this so badly 😭 I learned recently I’m just not a maple person. This fragrance is perfect for maple and syrup lovers out there, however it’s just not for me. It’s not terrible.

I really wanted to like this. I heard really good things. I heard wrong. It kind of reminds me of sawdust in a rodents cage. I prefer Harvest Mouse by a merry mile.

This smells like like out of date maple, not a huge fan of this . If you enjoy uniqueness for the sake of uniqueness , then you may enjoy this

Immortelle bomb. Almost a solinote

There is a synthetic wood note in the heart of this scent that in combination with what to my nose registers as fenugreek seeds ( aka maple) made this a scrubber. For those folks sensitive to aroma chemicals, beware. I don’t know exactly what the substance is, but if you’ve ever come close to Masque Milano’s Mandala, you will know what I’m talking about. Perhaps due to the above synthetics, strong performance should not come as a surprise. This is a good or a bad thing, depending on whether you enjoy the scent to begin with. Fortunately the dry down phase, while powerful and extended, is pleasantly sweet. I definitely get the vanilla, but not the patchouli or the cocoa as individual notes - they must temper the vanilla a bit though, as to me it’s sweet as a dusting of sugar, not as a full dose of syrup.

This didn't work for me, I love the note listing but it really ended up in a very strong bitter sweet smell that didn't really feel like maple to me, it was more like over ripe fruit and sugar syrup, and it lasted a long time like this. The sweet beer note in Harvest Mouse that is a bit more restrained in that fragrance kind of smells like Beaver Maple at times and I think if you like that one maybe try this, but if you found that note "that's enough no more thanks" then I'd probably steer clear of this.

“Ceci n’est pas une glace.” This is not an icecream, to paraphrase Rene Margritte. It is a painting of an icecream. It is painted on cheap chipboard, and has been hanging over the waffle machine in the icecream store for the last 50 years absorbing the delicious aromas. The icecream store sells all manner of delicious flavours, but Pascal Gaurin asks that you eat the chipboard painting instead. Is this a philosophical lesson about reality? I’m not sure, but I don’t like it.

I usually really like gourmands, so the fact that I don't like this scent is kind of surprising to me. The maple smells just alright I suppose, but it's not a very interesting scent. I expected a lot more out of this brand because it seems to have a cult following. Some of the other perfumes from this brand are more fitting of the fanfare, but as for this perfume it's just a little boring and unappealing.

It's a very sweet fragrance, with the maple and vanilla really standing out. Overall, it's quite pleasant and enjoyable. That said, it does have a bit of a feminine vibe, though I still think it can easily be worn by a man. However, I have to say, I absolutely despise the new bottles. It's made me lose interest in Zoologist altogether, and I doubt I'll be buying from them again anytime soon.

Someone spilled mother's perfume and a bucket of maple syrup on pancakes and gingerbread. Very gourmand-like dessert and inedible at the same time. There's a gingerbread-honey-pollen note here, similar to Bee. If you, like me, don't like sweet gourmand scents, pass by. Sorry, but I can't appreciate its charm. For me, this scent is unbearably cloying and tedious.

For a short while, the smoky aspect of maple syrup is the main focus of this scent but after that it's meh. I'd personally love an in between, however

Smells like you are sniffing a beaver's arsehole whilst chugging maple syrup. The castoreum absolutely shreds anything good about it, whilst the strong maple note adds a sickly sweetness that makes the whole experience even more disgusting. Again, I find it hard to type these words because I love Zoologist and their ideas, but this one is definitely not for me. The beauty of art being subjective means that there is a place for it in this world. But that place is not in my collection. I definitely think beaver when I smell it however, so it at least ties in with it's name, but in a very direct way which makes me feel sick. 1/10. Much like Rabbit, it can fuck right off.

Oh wow the new bottles are truly ugly. I hope Victor doesn’t stick with them. Surely something less generic and frilly? The juice is adequate, but very sweet and animalic with no subtlety - not impressed I think I’m done with this house the last few releases have been boringly mainstream. It treacle on Castoreum is you jam enjoy for me it’s a resell. Contact me to buy new bottle from Canada

Opens very sharp, almost a bit mouldy, acrid sharp huge and mapley funk. Hard to describe, but it's pretty awful on me. And then it gets worse. The floral notes kind of stack with it and make it even more oppressive. Smells a bit like something gone bad, amonia-ish. It didn't get better, or more interesting this accord just dominated until I scrubbed it. Really not pleasant.

This is probably the biggest let down in my fragrance journey, and it’s all my skins fault. I’ve smelt it on others and it’s a gorgeous woody oasis but on my skin it’s nothing but synthetic, grandma water lily and.. sunblock??? Such a shame.

The opening is quite intense but ok, but as soon as that's gone all I smell is celeriac. I like celeriac in moderation (in my pea soup), but not as the main event.

Not sure why some of these zoologist fragrances are getting other editions. Isn’t it better just creating a new fragrance altogether with new animal? Beaver smelling completely different than the original and the original was nice. However the original to me evoked more of a beaver and its habitat and nature than the maple edition. Don’t get me wrong, this maple edition smells great and I think I’m going to purchase a full bottle. But maple associated with beaver? Nonetheless, you sold me. Very autumn wear. Is that when beavers are most abundant and working? Their building materials are also their preferred food which is poplar, aspen, willow, birch and maple. Perhaps the idea to update and choosing maple associated its main note.

Sweet, waxy, incensy deliciousness. Dresses " mature or more serious". Very distinctive, and intense dna. Filippo Sorcinelli on sugar :) he would love this one ! ( reminds me of a sweet , yes even sweeter, version of Notre Dame notte di natale ). Quite edible in some parts, but still more incense based then maple based. I think the florals are too strong for me to love this, but i still enjoy it. I'll wait for dry down to see if florals can calm down and maple and cocoa can finally rise more to power.
