Beaver

Beaver is a grotty little old animal, hating me from within the safe confines of his ashen home. And I love it. Not only do I want it, when I get it I will BE the beaver! Reclusive in my fortress of solitude. The soft buttery orris embraces me like no other, Beaver’s Iris and Cedarwood whispers comfort into my world-weary heart. I layered it with Cacharel’s Amor Amor, and the combo just sums me up. The once-beautiful teen girl from the 90s, all grown up, chain smoking, bad breath, coffee and gin pulsing through my veins where innocent and optimistic blood once pumped. It’s initially metallic; it’s citrus-infused animalic leathers providing a sharp twang of savoury WTF. It soon dries to something very close to the skin that’s barely detectable beyond straight nose-to-pulse-point, and therefore is wholly inoffensive as a functional everyday scent. It is so soft, I will wear it out and no one will know. But I will know. Beaver is my silent protest. Piss me off and I’ll inhale deeply and squirt a psychic jet of beaver butt juice in your general direction.

Floral leather. Not what I was expecting on first blast. What is this clean/ leafy/ aquatic opening??? That quickly dissipates though and you're left with the main body of the fragrance, which is a hygienic but somewhat intense animalic leather on a bed of pretty but somewhat soapy florals. The leather has a rubbery edge to it but that's basically it. This is a very well groomed beaver, coming to visit with a lovely spring bouquet. They apparently removed the smoke and ash notes in the reformulation, which makes me sad because I do love those, but I trust this house so I'm sure this is better (I still would love to try the pre-reformation Beaver, though). The image is of a cool northern summer on a lake, with sprightly flowers perfuming the air. You're close enough to the beaver's den to make out it's musky smell but it's not overwhelming. Another winner from this amazing house.

A distant relative of yours has passed, and it has somehow fallen upon your mother to sort out the old man's hunting lodge. To your young mind, this is vaguely intriguing. When she brings you a long (she couldn't find a baby sitter for the day), you sit on the aged hardwood floors, lulled to contemplative silence by the glass eyes of the trophies mounted on the walls. Your mother is nearby somewhere, you can't quite see her, but you smell the bright, sharp tang of the citrus yellow antiseptic she is using to clean up with. Her floral perfume that has suffused you for the long, car ride you'd fallen asleep on coming up here clings to your soft sweater. The dry, whispery, skank of the fur of long dead, taxidermied animals creeps at the edges of your senses. There is ash in the long dead fireplace.

I purchased the entire sample collection of Zoologist, and I think Beaver might be my favorite. It's definitely the most wearable, and I'm thinking about buying a bottle. This is a musky floral scent that in contrast to its name is very fresh. It has a ungendered sexiness that works really well with my skin. Like all perfumes in this line, you really have to sample it before you buy—these are strange, evocative scents that will not appeal to everyone. I recommend getting the complete sample collection. You will hate some if not many of them (for me: Bee, Panda, Seahorse, Cow, Rhinoceros, Musk Deer, and Dragonfly were all gross,) but in the process of sniffing, you'll learn A LOT about notes and what you like in perfume. My other favorites in this line were Squid, Camel, and Snowy Owl.

Wet Smokey Floral Musk🌲🌊 I actually enjoy how quirky this fragrance is🤔🫶 I love how at first there's this strong smokey iris opening, while citrus and linden trickling behind it🍋 It reads more masculine- however I would layer this with Zoologists Camel for more sweetness👌🐫For about 15min it has a powdery ambience however right after the fragrance melts witb the skin, magic happens🪄✨️The castoreum, oakmoss and vanilla made the amber just expand beautifully😍 Great longevity and it's definitely for someone looking for a niche artistic animalic musk✨️ Zodiac Trio ⬆️Capricorn☀️Saggitarius 🌜Capricorn

This is one of the animals from The Wind in the Willows... it’s tenderer than reality. It talks! Real beavers can’t. It has thoughts more than it has instincts. The lightest "castoreum" is there from beginning, as a background, and stays as a background at all times. The frontstage lights are played around airy-aldehydes and a very suede-soft leather note. I don’t feel it as a super complex fragrance, I admire it as a soft power construction. From a pure olfactory classification it deserves deference as not every so often tapped territory: “ozonic-leather anybody”? Hello? Is anybody there? ;)

This scent is a masterpiece. I love wearing it before I go somewhere banal, Like the grocery store. I got a compliment. I just tossed my head in the air and let her know it was my Beaver she was smelling. I don't think she knew what to say. Dam gurl, no really, Dam gurl, I think I'm going to go build one.

This is light musk with a green floral note (Linden), and castoreum, but not enough to be obnoxious. It's tender and gentle and I think a travel size will be going on my wish list.

This one comes on super clean, which was not expected at all. I get the 'fresh open air' air note. It is beautiful, like mountain air. Slightly sweet and icy, more like a sensation than a smell. It reminds me of Demeter's Snow but it is much nicer. For a little while I smell something like baby powder on my skin. Perhaps that is the light musk shining through. You would be forgiven for thinking that a lot of the advertised notes are not in this. I do not smell dark woods or leather. I do not get anything dark or deep from this at all. Its progression is more like a brook that starts at the top of a mountain and snakes its way down into the warmer reaches of a grassy valley. Instead of timber, foliage and dank fur I get a stream. It would take a stretch of the imagination to arrive at beaver. Nevertheless, it is a nice clean smell with a unique opening of 'air'. This is a good scent to layer with other scents. It is a rather simple smell that could add atmosphere to a more full bodied scent.

I honestly don’t understand where all the negative comments are coming from. As another reviewer mentioned, "It smells like a cheap cleaning product and has plenty of rose." Personally, I didn’t detect any rose at all, and if I ever came across a cleaning product that smelled like this, I’d be extremely surprised. It’s a nice fragrance with hints of soap, smoke, and a subtle musk in the background. The scent conjures up an image in my mind of a bowl of soapy water, just used to wash my hands while camping by a river, with the smell of campfire smoke lingering in the air, late summer, with woods nearby. But keep in mind, fragrances evoke a different image for everyone. Although it's not unpleasant, I would say it might not necessarily appeal to everyone. You have to try it, but I’d say there’s a good chance you’ll like it.

You have to let this one set and develop onto the skin. The opening is very fresh/clean (agreeing with the ones that say its soapy) with a soft musk. It does not come off as over powering for me but it has good projection at first. After a couple of hours it definitely sets into a more sweet and powdery scent. I definitely get more of the amber and vanilla with a little of the musk on skin. I think it's beautiful and very interesting scent. As someone that leans into more of the gourmand, I appreciate the unique blend of the vanilla and iris. I can't say this is anything I smelled before and a great introduction to musk for myself. A solid 8/10. I would like it to be a little stronger but I can see this one to be a great scent to layer with.

This fragrance is much more beautiful than I expected. I was expecting Beaver to be a heavy dense musky anamalic scent. While the musk accord is pervasive, it isn't overpowering. It is just enough to be continuously pleasing and apparent. This fragrance reminds me of the smells of camping in the late Spring. The ash and ceder notes definitely create a camp fire feel. The musky accord mimics the earthy dampness that is especially pungent in the early morning. And then there is a gorgeous sweetness that emerges that screams the beauty of Spring, this accord is a beautiful mingling of the vanilla and Iris notes. This is a beautiful fragrance!!

I was taken aback a bit upon first sniff, surprised by the aroma wafting from my hand, yet intrigued. As I enjoy scents which are a bit challenging or innovative, I of course kept sniffing... My thoughts drifted to a cottage my family used to own, perched within a shadowed stand of cedars that lay near the edge of a woodland swamp. I loved to go trudging through the damp and shadowy wood to navigate the sunlit pools- this perfume captures that atmosphere- a temple in chartreuse- permeated by the sweet decay of fallen tree-limbs, the green mosses and ferns, the musky-peaty earth at one's feet. Beautiful!

I liked it a lot. Such a beautiful musky animalic fragrance. The animal accord is definitely softened by citrus and florals notes. It's slightly weaker than I expected but it still takes the stage. It's definitely the main note just not as aggressive as those in t rex or jungle jezebel by Sarah baker. This fragrance is smoother, better blended, not as edgy. It's definitely slightly safer. It still smells amazing to me and I love it. Today I also tried white suede by tom Ford and it has those musky warmer notes too but it leans more feminine and more floral.

IMHO Beaver is one of those brave creations that are called to claim the position animalics deserve in the world of fragances. The opening feels like a beaver tail slapping your face and bringing your nose back to the land from those no-quite-challenging aromas that we're used to, then it becomes smooth and it feels warm and elegant. What suprised me the most was the drydown, when the animalic feeling shares its place with some other fresh/citrus whiff which was totally unexpected and definitely pleasant for me.

(4/5) Initially it is subtle, feminine and floral - I loved it...but then as it started to dry the woody notes(and vegetation) started to come through more and I wasn't as huge on those notes. A couple hours after applying it was quite pleasant again - light, natural, floral and somehow familiar smelling..reminded me of spring time. Though it is a nice perfume and I did like it, I'm not sure I would splurge on a big bottle.

Green and aquatic on opening - crushed green leaves and river water underpinned with smoke. Like the damp, ashy embers of a campfire next to a river. The iris then comes through smelling sweet and powdery, bringing with it the musky animal aspect. Smells kind of like a warm, damp horse but in a nice way. After a couple of hours it turns sweeter and more floral, with the castoreum giving a background bitterness.

Beaver is a bit different than I expected. It starts off very soapy and almost aldehydic. But as it goes along that linden blossom really makes its presence known. It becomes a very big citrus yellow floral. As the dry down appears it gets more musky, and earthy. There is a wet and murky quality here that you would think would be off putting but it works. A well executed soapy, floral earthy, aquatic musk.

This is so specific, but this smells like those "please touch" natural history museum displays with animal pelt specimens, but with a transparent soapy note over it! That's not a bad thing, though. It's a very nostalgic scent to me, and this is the first animalic musk that I've really liked and won't get a headache from wearing. I fully expected a fecal musk bomb, but that's not what it is at all!

Clean, musky, floral. Very linear, not overtly strange or unique. Not very animalic or really not very anything, everything here is quite balanced and reasonable. Sits low on the skin and has no intention of offending. So far the least 'out there' Zoologist I've tried, but for some that may be a compliment. 7/10

Reading the book 'Fur, Fortune, and Empire' and this makes me feel like a true mountain man. Unfortunately it's springtime and this scent is darker and more applicable in Autumn. Still a huge fan of the ark, atmospheric, natural, primal, vibe of this one. One of Zoologist's most balanced frags.

Clean easy and natural everyday scent. People who usually don't like perfumes might enjoy this one as it's not offensive at all. Unfortunately it doesn't last as long as other zoologist fragrances.

At first, to me the linden gives such a pleasant, soapy smell, like I can almost feel the suds in my throat. After an hour or so of drying down, I definitely get more hints of the sexy musk.

Really don't get as much smoke as expected out of this, nor any animalic wet fur notes. It's a pleasant, soapy musk that's ever so slightly smoky, but not worth the high price tag.

This is an interesting fragrance. Pop of smoke with wood, citrus and light florals. Dry down settles in to amber and iris. It reminded me of a firework on the 4th of July. A pop of fire and then setting down quickly to a close to the skin fragrance. It is a great once in a while try when you want people to think you're "smokin" hot! :) But not something I'd have in my regular rotation.

I enjoy Zoologists scents. Even the ones I don't think I would ever wear in public are still interesting. This one though, was a disappointment for me. It is just a very linear musk. Not even an animalic musk but a clean musk and it sits close to the skin. I wish there was more to this but there isn't.

Category: Animalic, musky Notes: Mainly musk and linden flower with a strong animalic undertone that gets stronger the longer you wear it, slightly fecal - I’d say reminiscent of, frankly, cow shit or wet fur. Vibe: Cow pasture. Wet fur. Glacial water. Animal instinct. Ice diving. Bear fishing salmon in the stream. Dog swimming in the pond. Fresh laundry dropped in mud. Wellies. Fisherman. Bog body. Sillage: 8/10. Moderate to strong projection, you can definitely pick up on the musk and linden from an arm's length. The castoreum or animalic qualities don't become apparent until you get a little bit more intimate. Longevity: ?/10. I unfortunately had to wash this off after about an hour and a half. This might settle into something more wearable after that point, but I wasn't willing to wait any longer. Wear: Daytime wear, spring and summer. Be careful with this as it's definitely not a crowd pleaser - maybe not for the office, unless you want your coworkers wondering if you stepped in some dogshit on your way to work. Overall rating: 3/10. This is, at best, an acquired taste and at worst straight up repulsive and I think whether this works or fails rests entirely on individual skin chemistry. For that reason alone I would not recommend anyone, no matter how much you think you may like animalics, to blind buy this. I’d like to claim that I have a pretty open-minded nose, but this was a little too funky even for my tastes. I think the accords are wildly misleading as well as this isn't even remotely smoky or woody. It's musky, animalic and quite floral. The linden flower and musk smell super fresh like laundry detergent mixed with the most fresh, crisp water source ever - like glacial water - but then there's that castoreum in the mids and base that completely contradicts that freshness; funky, wet and very dirty. The composition very much reminds me of summers in the south of Sweden and the smell of a cow pasture after the rain. So essentially cow shit, mud, wet fur, grass and wildflowers. I wouldn’t say it's gag-worthy or anything, but it's definitely not an appealing scent. From afar it genuinely smells quite pleasant, but up close it is simply too fecal for me to get past. I definitely see the inspiration taken from beavers with the mix of the fresh, slightly aquatic notes with the wet fur/fecal notes but to me this screams cow more than beaver due to my personal scent memory associations. In some ways it reminds me of Elizabeth Arden's Pure White Linen Light Breeze, but with a dirty animalic added to the mix. Who would wear it?: A cow farmer or a fisherman.

I sampled Beaver back in 2015 and, again, recently after finding another sample while going through my shoe-boxes filled with fine fragrance. I try to catch up testing my samples each Holiday Season. As for Zoologist Beater... The two main notes in this fragrance are castoreum and ash. I would argue they are, in fact, beaver and ass or beaver-ass. Zoologist Beaver is truly a horrible fragrance. While I am strangely draw to high-quality animalic scents, this is not one of them. Castoreum can work, and work well, when blended with oakmoss, leather and other interesting notes. The ash/ass if this fragrance just turns this into a dirty smelling mess that curdles my stomach. No! No! Just no! Unfortunately, Beaver lasts a solid 12+ hours on my skin and projects moderately to above average. For once I wish that I were wearing a skin scent...and it was on someone else. Although I pass for me, I commend Zoologist for the artistry and creativity behind this fragrance. While I feel this one is a big miss, they have released a several very interested, highly unique, and very lovable fragrances. But Original Beaver is not one of them IMO. Regardless, I look forward to trying Beaver 2016 one of these days.

Disclaimer: I typically do not like very floral fragrances. My usual favorites are woods, spice, incense, and the occasional gourmand, so long as it isn't cloyingly sweet. I'm also quite new to this space and haven't gotten to smell individual components to be able to pick them out yet. This didn't last ten minutes of wear for me. At first sniff it's very floral, but just shy of overly so for my taste. It evolved into a smell that I associate more with cleaning products, though. A sharp twang beneath overpowering cover-up fragrance. The silage is pretty wide, too. I had to wash it off. I like the smell of linden trees a lot, but this didn't remind me of linden, despite its inclusion. It was more reminiscent of lilacs for me, which I like in nature, but usually do not like in their frangrance-world distillation. No full bottle for me, but if you like floral fragrances, maybe for you. It's very low, in my sniffing, on animallic scents. I can't perceive the cedar, amber, or ash at all.

When I first smelled this on paper I liked it. When I tried it on skin I coudn't handle the smell. It smells very much like a beaver in a wet environment. I've noticed that when there's a water note in a Zoologist fragrance it somehow makes me nauseous. Out of all Zoologist perfumes this one made me most naeseous. I just can't deal with the combination of the water and the castoreum. If you're into Squid but want more animalistic, I think this is the fragrance for you.

I do like a lot of animalistic scents. So I had great hopes for this house. This is the first one I tried from Zoologist. And I am completely disappointed. Maybe I expected too much, but to my nose, this smelled like funky wet fur... and NOT in a good way. So a pass for me. On the plus side, the longevity on this is fantastic and the project is good. So if you are into this type of scent, then it is a great find.

Potentially the worst fragrance I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing, and I wore this one all day. You can describe the entire scent profile of Beaver with four words: Ashy atmospheric sharpie marker. There is not a universe where Beaver is a good fragrance.

i grew up in the tropics and this is how we smelled like as kids when we have been playing too long in the sun and in dire need of a bath, just add the citrus and a little vanilla. would i wear this? yes, but i'd stay indoors. would i buy this? no.

I think some of you folks (many of you this past year) are confusing this fragrance with Beaver 2016 (reformulated variant) and should move your reviews to the correct fragrance. There is nothing watery and aquatic about the original formulation.

I thought this would be a sweet musky aquatic but it is dirty mop water sadly. Far more soapy/cleaning product than I expected, and the watery notes smell pretty synthetic. Maybe it’s the castoreum? Not sure, but not a wearable fragrance for me

no two ways about it: this smells like wet animal fur. it reminds me of going to a nature preserve as a child and touching the pelts of local animals they had on display. happy wet beast wednesday!

I liked the first 15 seconds. I also really liked the woody smell when I had my wrists right up to my nose. The rest of the experience was bad enough that I washed it off my neck in ~15 minutes.

Beaver. In more ways than one, I think beaver. It has a funky musk to it that may work for some who enjoy the dirty, animalic side of fragrance. For me, it's too funky and moist.

This goes on a citrus floral with some castoreum for depth but then it dries down quickly to an aquatic.

Animalic leather.... Not for me. A little skanky... No offense 🤷♂️

À nauseating amount of castoreum, surprise surprise.

This is one of my favorites from Zoologist, so far. I have a complete sample set that I've been playing with, to try to find out which ones are worthy of a full bottle... and this is one of them, up there with Bat and Dragonfly. They leave an impression on me, that goes beyond "oh, this smells good" or simply reminding me of something else. Beaver opens with a clean laundry sort of aldehydic vibe, kinda like the Chanel No.5 Eau Premiere. It's very crisp, and fresh... and there's so much animalic muskiness going on under all of that, which makes the whole experience very compelling and unique. The dry down has me constantly sniffing my arm. I'm very used to woody scents, but there's something about this one that has that "indie" vibe. It's not a crowdpleaser, which is what I look for in fragrances. I'm so exhausted with the grapefruit/cedar combination that's everywhere these days. But Beaver has something special, and I'm VERY interested in splurging on a full bottle. I'm gonna finish through my sample set and choose my top three to actually buy for real. And Beaver is a strong contender.

Boring synthetic musk concept. Just right for somebody has no experience of the Canadian woods or any of the essences you'd find in the beaver's habitat or, for that matter, actual castoreum. For anybody looking for a really good wilderness or castoreum themed fragrance, this stuff is a joke. Pretty clear this entire series is basically attractive packaging for cheap synthetic musks. And the veneer of animal welfare seems opportunistic and disengenuous. If you're in need of a good 'nature concept' why not get yourself a natural perfume or just go for a walk in the woods. Or better yet donate to the preservation of habitat projects. You're not helping any beavers (or Canadian perfumery) by purchasing this product. There's nothing remotely innovative or interesting here. If I was the one making this fragrance I'd have budgeted half my funds to pay to have the perfumers flown to Canada and spend enough time up north to get their concepts right. Meet some trappers, talk to some elders, go for a walk in the woods. Let us tell you a bit about our beavers.

Fans of the anamalic rejoice: the highly anticipated Beaver is here. This is a musky, castoreum fueled skin scent with a smokey undertone. The smoke plays second fiddle (thankfully since I'm not a huge smoke fan) allowing the castor, or Beaver, to shine. I detect a tiny floral heart (maybe a yellow flower but it could be just an impression). The castoreum is not the sharp, lustful kind found in 80's perfume powerhouses like Delicious; its subdued and presented in a very niche manner. The whole affair eventually transitions into a smooth drydown (my favourite part). When I first wore Beaver I immediately thought it would be perfect for layering or to give any other perfume an anamalic 'oomph'. It also works fine just on its own. The bottle is beautiful, no expense spared, heavy, quality, I love it.

I was so excited for this because I really thought I'd love it but oh my god. I almost started crying scrubbing this off because I was about to go out and it smelled so bad on me I'm getting emotional thinking about this. There was a little bit of a freshwater river flower smell but the CASTOREUM WAS SO STRONG OH MY GOD it smelled like urine to me. Like wet mildewy urine soaked wood. I thought it was still on me later that night while on the street until my boyfriend said "it smells like piss over here" and I thought oh thank god it's actual pee on someone/something and not the lingering scent of Beaver. I'm terrified. Have never had a reaction to a perfume like this I don't think I'll ever risk a castoreum note again

Opening: This is a very airy fragrance. I smelled it, and was like mmmm, this is so good. I wanted to see what others had to say. Someone wrote that it opens like Sharpie markers. I can get that vibe. Sharpie Markers when fresh can smell nice, but very sharp. This is like a pleasant floral (very slightly musky) smelling Sharpie marker, and without the harshness. The castoreum reminds me of Chanel Anteus. I don't sense any dirty animalic notes, and I love dirty animalics. The best way I can describe the opening is airy, light, and pleasant. 20 minutes in I imagine a new leather jacket inside of a refrigerated case of a florist's shop. Zoologist's Beaver is the third entry in the line that I've tried, and smells mostly of vague animalic muskiness. It's not particularly offensive, but not particularly pleasing, either. Projection and longevity are decent but not noteworthy for an EDP, especially given the price. I can see how there is more buzz in the line about Rhinoceros, given that it's a bit more provocative. Beaver is certainly more restrained and smoothed over but I simply don't see the merit in wearing this even at a bargain price, let alone its niche price. I'm nonetheless still interested in trying Hummingbird and Bat, each of which seem to have been received well, the latter only by online reviewers so far. 5 out of 10

The Beaver is a musky mammal at its best, but not the dramatic, controversial, overly sexual or off-putting kind. I think the childhood memories it evokes in many reviewers might stem not only from the woody "camping trip" smell but also the coziness of the overall impression. The animalic aspects do smell like a small furry animal, but not exclusively so. They also make me think of scalp and hair, of the used linens in a child's bed, of family and innocent physical closeness. My own personal childhood memory, though, is something else in the fragrance. It's the linden blossoms, their fresh yet honeyed scent carried to you by a sudden breeze in early summer.

Beaver, heh heh heh, right? Grow up, dorks. With a base of castoreum (synthetic beaver musk) and notes of linden blossom, iris, earth, and smoke, this opens on an outdoorsy, woodland aquatic vibe that quickly becomes an acrid, animalic musk. Despite the subtly sweet powderiness that keeps it from venturing into “unpleasant” territory, it isactually a kind of funky, moist scent. It’s pretty skanky, but in a really interesting and strangely comforting way. Beaver was designed by Chris Bartlett who describes his creations as, “fragrances that some people will love, rather than perfumes everyone will like.” Fair enough!
