Dodo Jackfruit Edition

Like many here, I didn't like the original Dodo and the 2020 was average, not amazing not horrible. I actually had the sample a while back with an order and that was quite a surprise. I honestly expected it to be middling but it blew me away. This is fresh, beautiful and clean. People have been claiming Zoologist are becoming more "mainstream" but Tiger showed that Victor Wong still is very much meticulous in his vision and to me Tiger was far from mainstream (even if you did like vetiver, which is far from everyone from the get go, especially in the designer/mainstream scene). Dodo 2023 (aka jackfruit edition) is once again a further change for the profile. The perfumer from the 2020 version is also at work here and this time, the funk (more like the jungle rank, as someone who's been there trust me the jungle doesn't smell much pleasant at all!) from the 2020 is all but gone at this point. This new version is very clean, pretty much closer to a high quality fougere, driven by crisp, bright bergamot and aromatic lavender. I do smell the spices (a slight pepperiness in the opening) and the woody tones in the drydown but this is very much a fougere and if you don't like bergamot or lavender, you won't be happy here. That said, if you didn't like the previous iterations of Dodo, this is far removed from it. It's very pleasant and perfect for summer. Sure, it's more accessible when compared to other Zoologists and the animal's description is less easy to wrap your head around (this time, the smell is not of the dodo bird, more that of its surroundings). Actually, I find that this is a very good stepping stone for someone who wants to get into the brand without being hit by the harsher, more animalic perfumes. Zoologist or not, niche or not, this is a wonderful perfume!

Classic masculine powdery soapy fougere, but with a slight twist. The powder is minimal but definitely noticeable, and there is a very green soapy core that spans the life of the fragrance. The opening is a little sweet, and to my nose smells like overripe tropical fruits (i don’t know what a jackfruit smells like tbh). After that initial blast, the fruitiness quickly calms down and nearly disappears. Overall it’s just nice though, not exactly challenging, but very pleasant and uplifting. I’m not normally a fan of powdery barbershop type scents, but this is easily one of my favorites in the genre. My fiancée said it would be good to use as a pillow spray before bed, as it’s just very pleasant and calming. I got this directly from Zoologist as a free sample with a purchase, and honestly i expected to hate it, based on my reaction to the stomach-turning Dodo 2020 edition. This, thankfully, is nothing like that, and I am even considering buying a travel spray of it as my next zoologist order. A surprising love, especially considering my expectations.

My nose didn't pick up on the 'laundry detergent' scent that others are commenting on. Upon the initial spray, the scent of jackfruit is refreshing and oddly nostalgic. I will say that I come from a tropical climate, so the scent profile on this one was a lot more familiar and comforting for me. Sure, it has that clean, Lavendar note where I can see how others may mistake it for detergent. However, it's a lot more complex with that sweet, sour pineapply tint that's gently embraced by a calming lavender. Seet, milky and consoling, like I'm burning a candle on my patio while laying on a hammock. Love this! My only nitpick is that I feel it didn't last very long on me compared to Zoologist's other fragrances, which is why I wont be buying it. It could just be my skin chemistry, but there are other fragrances Zoology has made that I feel last longer with just as pleasant of a scent.

Fresh, athletic, soapy, white-floral-powdery (doesn’t sound like Zoologist so far) but with a groundedness and addictive complexity you might expect from the house. I’m not the first to say it, but this is Zoologist’s version of Old Spice. Maybe that was the hidden concept: the dodo is extinct, so let’s use this animal as our opportunity to engage with a famous old (1938) fragrance? None of it quite tracks here, conceptually, but the scent itself is a quiet triumph. Versatile, understated and wearable while retaining its own character. Its dignified, unmistakable extrait presence works fine on a rainy evening - I assure you this isn’t as summery as the votes suggest. An overlooked Zoologist win.

Not at all like Dodo 2020, this is a really nice fougere with a tropical twist to it. The jack fruit in the opening 5 minutes or so is sweet and juicy, smells very similar to banana but more "darker" of a yellow if that makes sense. Turmeric gives an earthy spice feel to it and layers well with a very clean lavender like a fabric softener or something like that. Becomes a clean lavender skin scent after an hour lasts about 4-6 wish the later part of it was more significant but is really nice all around a lot easier to wear than the 2020 version. Its just outside full bottle worthy to me if only the other notes lasted with the lavender, still a highlight to me.

I've been wearing this almost daily for the last week. I get the lavender at the beginning, and I get how other people find it detergent-y; it does smell kind of like fresh laundry, and it can be powdery. I like that initial scent, it's nice, but what really grabs me is the dry-down. After a few hours, this becomes really green, with lots of vetiver, a little bit of background sweetness, and sometimes a hint of the lavender from before. Like some others have said, I don't really get any jackfruit, but I don't mind. I'm here for that deep, rich green, like when you crush a plant stem in your hand--really fresh, almost wet. Fascinating and really pleasant!

Very nice modern fougere. I received a sample with a purchase. I sprayed it once and gave it to my 20yr old son as I found it slightly masculine. My son gets bored with me asking him to test different scents but this one didn't get relegated to the pile of 'maybe later' discards like the current new designer releases. He really enjoyed this one and I couldn't stop sniffing the scent trail he was leaving. I've bought him a bottle for Christmas. From the sample the longevity seems decent, one tester spray lasted well over 12hrs on the card.

Dodo Jackfruit Edition is a quite unconventional Zoologist, definite a (very) distant relative to the other two Dodos (in discontinued heaven). This is a very traditional, super masculine fragrance. Slightly soapy, not sweet, with a light fruity undertone. On my skin the lavender in Dodo JE shines. It feels almost like a vintage cologne. The deep, deep dry down, reminds me a bit of the dry down of some colognes from Acqua de Parma. Big love from me. Good for daywear in the warmer months.

If you hated the original Dodo ... and most of us did ... you'll be blown away by the changes made to it. Dodo Jackfruit Edition is really, really good! The nasty funkiness of the original with its nuances of bad breath and rank body odor are gone! The jackfruit adds a balanced sweetness the original never dreamed of. I only have a sample of this so far, but it's going to be my next Zoologist purchase. 8.5 out of 10.00

The more feminine version of Dodo, in my opinion. While regular Dodo is more spicy than sweet, the Jackfruit edition is a gourmand. It has a playdough scent on the dry down that I personally really enjoy in a perfume, but I know that's not everyone's cup of tea. I loved the regular Dodo on my boyfriend because it smells more like a cologne and I love this one on me! They're very cute as a pairing.

It opens with a strong herbal scent, aromatic, like your grandpa' s cologne but refined. Then it become warmer, you can smell the spiciness, it' s very tropical, and the vanilla twist that shows itself at the end is incredible. I think it's an assertive fragrance that should not be blind buyed but worth the test because it's vbersatile in its own category.

Reminds me a LOT of Tom Ford Beau De Jour. If you love that fragrance, I think you'll love this one too. It's a bit fruitier in the opening, and a bit sweeter/ less sharp in the dry down, but even smelling them side by side, it's a VERY similar experience. I love Beau De Jour, and I love this too, but I think that having both is probably a bit redundant.

I think it’s one of my favorites from the whole collection. It’s a happy fruity tropical scent with slightly soapy undertones. It definitely has this balance of sweet and green notes that makes it absolutely delicious and cheerful mood lifting fragrance. Follow me on IG: scent.guide

I think this is a classic barbershop-style ffragrance. The overall composition feels very refined, and I enjoyed the scent from the top notes all the way to the base. It doesn't particularly remind me of a dodo, but it's very wearable and has repectable longevity.

I never tried the original Dodo but this one smells amazing !!! It opens very green and fresh then as I dries I get more fruity vibes. Longevity seems ok, sprayed on about 3 hours ago and keep getting little blasts of scent when I move. Highly recommended x

Far less overpowering than the original. The jackfruit mixed with turmeric instead of cumin, sage and rosemary get rid of most of the sweaty armpit accord. Its floral and a bit sweet with heavy tonka on the dry down.

This is amazing always form your own opinion because this is sensational just smells tropical clean heavy lavender green notes and sweet is definitely has a high quality smell to it I need a bottle asap

This is not a safe blind buy. In the beginning it's kinda nice, but then it settles to this smell of diapers, it's not used diapers but like the clean type of smell. Not for me 3/10

It smells like banana. I highly advice you don’t blind but this. It has weak projection too but very nice packaging

The original Dodo was a fun and slightly weird little perfume that pushed a cumin note that many found to be off-putting. I enjoyed it. Dodo Jackfruit seems to rectify the “off-putting issue” for those that had the issue. The opening is jackfruit - imagine that! It is pleasantly tropically fruity sweet and bitter sour thanks to the jackfruit and bergamot, without going down the sickly and syrupy route thankfully, but you immediately begin to notice what the brand replaced that gargantuan cumin note with: turmeric. It is an interesting substitution that leans far more on the side of pleasant than the pushy cumin. Rooty and slightly green with a hard, yet sweet, cooked carrot type note, the turmeric is a nice accent to the quietly gentle masculine floral heart. The original presentation of Dodo sort of rode the unisex-leaning-masculine line since it tried to capitalize on the masculine cumin craze of its time period, yet with the turmeric presenting its sweet and rooty character it goes quite comfortably onto the line of strictly unisex. I thought for a while that I discovered the intention of this flanker per the aforementioned but then came the dry down, which veers very confidently into standard classical masculine territories more so than I recall the original Dodo doing. That said though, the base is very nice - a well-done balance of vetiver, sandalwood, and labdanum presenting green woods accented with an animalic and vanillic facet. In fact, I think this base is better done in Jackfruit than the original Dodo. Overall just like with the original Dodo, Jackfruit is a solid “like” for me but not a “love”. As with the original it doesn’t say enough for me to go to the “bottle worthy” end of the spectrum. However, since the cumin was so omnipresent and clearly the focal point of interest in the original, yet in Jackfruit it was replaced by a surprising yet technically sound choice of turmeric that is “less challenging”, I cannot say that Jackfruit is actually any less interesting. Additionally, it has that great Zoologist characteristic of wearing easily and lightly on your skin and in the air, never crowding you or scratching its way up your nose. If you found the original Dodo a bit too salty and body-odory, and/or just generally “too much”, you’ll quite like Jackfruit. And, even if you did like the original Dodo, you’ll likely find Jackfruit to be a warm-hearted companion to the original’s more standoff-ish character. It's a solid flanker.

Juicyfruit gum and florals. Sounds like a simple and maybe even potentially awkward combination but Zoologist pulls it off! The reviews for the original Dodo are extremely polarized (same with every Zoologist fragrance), but overall the majority of reviewers noted the animalic scents present in the original. This made me a little scared because I was going to wear this sample to work and definitely didn’t want to smell like a zoo. Thankfully there’s really not much animalic here. It’s as I said, fruity and floral. Works as a daytime spring/summer fragrance. I must have gone nose blind to this since by the time 3pm rolled around (I sprayed this at 5am), the fragrance seemed light and I thought I needed a re-up. I don’t recommend doing that. I was going to a dinner later that night and nearly choked myself out because apparently the scent was still there from the first application and just got reactivated to an overpowering degree with the second. If you hit all the right points the first time, you should still be smelling good to whoever passes by you—even if it feels like a skin scent to you

I didn't like original Dodo, the litchi ambergris and feather accord made my stomache turn a bit. But it was a good take on the animal. The 2020 version was ok but didn't really grab me much. This one is great as a smell. It's not very daring, the feather musk thing is gone and instead we have a refined lavender focused gents scent. A very gents aftershave base in here plus the lavender reminds me a bit of Caron Pour Homme, but with the twist with the jackfruit (which is kind of banana-y) and is very strong in the open but melds nicely into the whole mix later on to the point of being lost in the later stages. If you want a great somewhat traditional clean "fougere" with a twist I think this is a good one. If you want the more funky daring aspect you got from the original Dodo then I don't think this will satisfy you. This to me has zero association with the animal aside from that big tropical blast in the open. Because of that, I'm on the fence on whether to upgrade from a sample, because it's not a very "Zoologist" Zoologist.

We find our hero returned from abroad, brimming with improbable tales of the Mauritian wilds, though he’s rather reduced by the dreary confines of provincial Staffordshire. But just for a moment, as he powders his hands before leaving the loo, something in the fragrance transports him ... he can almost hear the distant squawk of the massive birds, picture the giant trees dropping overripe fruits to rot on the jungle floor, feel again the day ahead full of strange possibility. Alas the moment is fleeting, and he returns, smelling powdery and proper, to meet the only future that awaits him. P.S. As usual with Zoologist, technical points are 10/10 - natural-smelling, perfect sillage, lasts forever.

This is lovely, there’s an initial blast of fruits that I wish stuck around a little longer. It settles down to an earthy lavender with some fruits in the background. The slight fruityness doesn’t distract from the scent but instead they provide more interest overall. Neither of them are fighting for dominance. The slight powdery earthy notes can conjure the image of an extinct, possibly fossilized creature. I don’t know if I’d necessarily associate this scent with a Dodo, but it is very nice. I don’t find it to be as “laundry detergent-esque” as other people do. After most of the notes fade away I'm left with a more mature smelling earthy base.

This guy takes you on a journey. A performance in three acts, if you will. The opening, heart, and drydown are all very distinct and very different from one another. Every time I wear it, I can’t help but sniff my hand incessantly and it seems like each time that I do, the fragrance evolves in some way. It starts out very fresh and uplifting, then becomes grounded as a few animatic nods to the original appear, but it’s minimal and perfectly balanced. This middle heart phase is my favorite. Unfortunately, the dry down gets a bit dusty at the end, which I’m not a fan of. But I’m going to keep my bottle for the opening and heart alone. 7/10

A sweet fruity opening that melds with something savory and warm. I find it quite pleasant. It sits on skin very well to create a naturalistic aura, like warm hands that have been picking exotic fruits all day in the sun. I smell the lavender + tonka as well. Balanced sweet and fresh. Naturalistic. Easy to wear. Not too sweet or synthetic like many fruity fragrances from other houses, but still on the easygoing side when compared to other Zoologist perfumes. Shifts as it dries. Becomes greener. I do get the orange blossom. Lavender tonka remains. Very fresh and a bit powdery but also a bit airy. Nice fragrance. Worth a sample. 8.0/10

As a fan of zoologist I ordered a bunch of samples to try some I haven’t smelled or own. I didn’t think I was going to like Dodo jackfruit edition as I much as the other samples. This definitely changes on the skin. And it’s a nice journey. It definitely smells expensive which can be a bonus. Don’t know how the other Dodo fragrance smells but want to try it more now. I’m sure completely different and I’m guessing the jackfruit edition I will like more. The dry down is the best part. Very sandalwood which a love and a comforting even cuddling fragrance which is even better.

Okay, at first spray, it’s literally just lavender and florals. It’s like when you put banana in a smoothie and all you can taste is the banana. HOWEVER, you get more of the fruit notes as it dries down (thank god). Jackfruit isn’t to be confused with durian which is a stinky but delicious fruit. Jackfruit is sweet and almost candy-like. It’s a very tropical scent, but I feel like this needs layering. I might pair it with mango skin by vilhem parfumerie to kind of force more of that tropical vibe and cut the lavender. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I was very pleasantly surprised by this fragrance. Initially it smelled very fresh and citrusy. The pepper notes come in and it erupts with floral notes, namely lavender. It finally settles into a powdery, amber, sandalwood smell. It does dry down to be slightly "laundry detergent/Dove bar soap"-esque, but I find it to be more complex than that, peppery and vegetal. I don't really get the "tropical" notes that others do which is a little disappointing, but this is still a good spring/summer scent for me.

I really liked dodo (2020) so I bought this one blindly not even knowing what a jackfruit is. Smells kind of like these white soap bars from back in the days. Honestly a bit disappointed with how vanilla it smells, in the sense of normal/boring not actual vanilla. You can smell a hint of lavender and the other smell must be the jackfruit. But wearing this on a hot summer day with a white shirt, that's a vibe. You're gonna smell like your clothes are fresh out of the washing machine

I totally get the jackfruit in this fragrance (stronger in the opening) but ultimately the scent as a whole has a men's aftershave vibe. Also dries down very powdery. It smells really nice (a bit vintage and very mature) but definitely masculine to my nose and not something i would wear as a female. Would work great on a man for casual everyday wear IMO. I have never tried the original version so cannot compare but this one does remind me of Bana Banana from L'Artisan.

I have had this for a while now (benefit of living in Toronto near Zoologist) and I really like it. I despised the original Dodo and its BO scent (from black currant? Feather?). The Jackfruit with the bergamot really adds a nice touch to this fragrance. In any case, this is a nice cool weather scent. Not my favourite from Zoologist, but I liked it enough to buy a 10ml travel spray. Definitely a try before you buy fragrance IMO.

This is nice. This smells super similar to YSL la nuite de l’homme edt. The difference is that this one takes it in a more tropical direction, which makes it great for summer. Super wearable, not really my favorite but i understand all the hype. Tl;dr: YSL la nuite de l’homme edt summer edition - nice.

Although the overall effect could be that of an animalic spicy that revolves a bit too much around the exotic fruitiness, the lavender, with its fresh and aromatic aromas, comes through and transforms it into a beautiful masculine fougere that is very complex but also wearable.

Fresh zingy opening and and the dry down is nice, I get lots of bergamot and pepper. After that it's all tonka bean for me. It's definitely pleasant and much more wearable than Dodo 2020 but not quite as interesting.

It's a pleasant masculine lavender scent. Fresh and quite herbal. Opening is like spicy playdoh, if you can imagine what that smells like. Would never willingly wear this, but I don't dislike this scent. 6.5/10

Yet another awesome product from Zoologist. It reminds me a bit of Penhaligon's Endymion. Yet, it is more complex and enjoyable. It may be the added orris. Not sure. But I like it. Great daily wear.

By reading the notes I thought this would be in a very unisex realm, but the aromatics and earthy spiciness is making it lean into a very masculine scent that I struggle to describe. Someone in the reviews far below me wrote «freshly deodorized armpit» and I believe that might be it? Though I am not sure. The scent is clean and very powdery; the aromatic lavender has a really strong presence initially and it throws me off and makes it all hard to pick apart. When it initially dries down on my skin it gets really powdery. Like baby powder or talcum. I am transported back to when I was younger and babysat my cousins’ children, changing their diapers... Not exactly what I desire to smell like on my day-to-day basis. Though, it is mesmerising in its own way. When the sandalwood and vetiver bring forth the woodiness and the aromatic lavender takes its turn it is a quite masculine sexy scent. It is such a weird combo and I am baffled. My face right now is completely like the side-eyeing-Chloe meme. The turmeric is a note that I am not familiar with perfume-vise. Is it blended into the aromatics or is it yet another note that my nose won’t pick up? In my notes I have written down that there is something animalic in the very base of the scent, but it is just the turmeric behaving the same way that nutmeg does on my skin? I cannot wear scents with nutmeg because it turns really sour and skanky on my skin, and this perfume unfortunately does the same. The very final drydown is way more pleasant than it was initially. It is sweeter, more floral and slightly more unisex, even though I still would say it is a masculine scent. Maybe I have just come to realise that there is a lot of notes in this perfume that doesn’t work with my skin chemistry. And I am fine with that. Zoologist have a lot of challenging perfumes, and some that are hidden gems. I am happy that I have smelled and reviewed this one, but it is not one that I will miss.

The best version of Dodo yet. I've never smelled fresh jackfruit, so I can't say whether the accord is successful, but it does have a tropical feel. I actually didn't picture jackfruit to have a particular smell or flavour at all, since it is often used as a meat substitute thanks to its texture. I remember when Chameleon and Dodo had their releases intertwined in 2019: they were both marketed and teased as a duo, scents based on islands (Madagascar and Mauritius) and sharing a tropical theme, but they didn't have similar smell profiles. Now, they are definitely siblings, whereas the first two versions of Dodo were not even relatives to Chameleon, more like acquaintances. Chameleon is the more unisex of the two, but not necessarily the most wearable. This one wears quite well, but still has that Zoologist quirkiness that makes it stand out. This one here smells mostly like banana to me. Not at all like the banana in the original Bat; more like a sweet, candied, almost artificial banana, which I actually like a lot. To me, this perfume has two defined phases: the initial sweet, crisp banana and later on, the powdery, woody orris. The latter phase is also reminiscent of some sort of popular laundry detergent or cleaning product, I can't put my finger on what it reminds me of exactly, but my memory is definitely triggered here. No trace of cumin at all here for anyone who, like me, greatly despised the 2020 formulation.

First impression (on skin): Fruity, ripe, citrusy, peppery, spicy, flowery, woody, strong, refreshing, tropical, masculine, slightly earthy I have mixed feelings about this one. I found this quite potent after putting it on, strong sillage and scent trail from just 1-2 sprays, and it seemed to last well through a whole day out. The mix of fruit and florals definitely give it a clean, refreshing smell, but one that's got a tropical feel to it. It's also well-balanced, I didn't find any note overpowering the other. It didn't change much as time went on and stayed pretty linear. The only downside is that it sort of reminds me of a cleaning solution, or aftershave? It definitely has a spice to it that leans more masculine, rather than unisex. I personally like fruity and citrusy scents, so I liked it overall, but I understand why people might say this is a bit generic or similar to Old Spice cologne/deodorant. My interpretation from this didn't conjure the image of Dodo birds, though... more an adventurer-type character exploring a tropical forest and wearing a cologne to smell fresh under the heat of the sun. He's stepping on ripe fruits left on the forest floor, there's the slightest hint of musk from the animals living there, but they're hidden away. OVERALL RATING: 3/5 RECOMMENDATION: Sample first Location tested: Forearm, neck, shirt Would I purchase a full bottle?: No

Fifth try from the brand. 2 sprays on my arm. On the initial spray, I do get the jack fruit. Pretty unique scent to use as the only other scent that i've smelled that in is One Million Prive from Paco Rabanne. Its mostly soapy clean and jack fruit. As it dries down, it becomes powdery. Its not the usual powder note tho. It is reminding me exactly of the Cuticura powder smell. Has a bit of fougere vibes in there too like brut-ish. Performance wise, its not shouting off the skin but is got a nice soft projection with good silage. Longevity is good on my skin. Overall, its a nice fruity powdery scent. Wasn't expecting this from Zoologist but every scent has its place and time and this is more on the wearable side. Worth the try if you like powdery scents.

First impression was, “This is a stronger version of DNG Light Blue Intense??” On my skin, Dodo is a fresh, citrus, ocean, musky fragrance. Notes that i pickup are salt, water, lemon at the top, ambroxan and patchouli at the heart and musk at the base. Dry down presents a powdery patchouli, im still waiting for the jackfruit... It’s Spring. 1981. End of another warm, exhausting, 6th grade school day. Earlier that morning, you put on your dad‘s Brute deodorant stick and a splash of his old spice aftershave. Why? Because yesterday you discovered just how amazing girls are. Discernibly masculine. Smells like a combination of desperation and perspiration beneath a layer of old school perfumery. Amazing are the memories perfume can evoke.

Remarkable, how this version is way more pleasant than the original one. It opens green but in the dry down smells exactly like marzipan cakes mixed with some "fresh" deodorant for men. It's not for me but at least it's pleasant and probably safe to wear in public, unlike the regular Dodo.

Is anyone else getting straight lynx africa or am i crazy? Admittedly it smells like a more luxurious adaptation with the jackfruit and sandalwood coming through, but wow is this lynx Africa
